12:05 AM
Love how it shows so many people in chat but just you, me and ari talking

Soon you and Ari will be the only ones. 1 AM.

lol
Just woke up. got school in the morning tho

nearly 8PM here

/me is leaving later than he usually does cause the new campus is nearer, and i hate getting locked out of class for being too early

journey where the hell are you"ve never heard of being locked out for being early

12:10 AM
@user88311: SMF-IHL singapore ;p
only happens with the 9am classes

random and nobody cares but this just in, sony plans to unveil the ps4 in feb

XD
/me is totally a PC guy

the ps4 comes with 8 processors and 12 gigs of ram
for 399
same with the new xbox except it has a quad core processor pretty sure
mod slightly, install your choice of OS
there you go

XD
oh yeah
and it runs a AMD chip, right?

yep

12:16 AM
I suspect it would be cheaper to build something by then with the same specs ;p

some amd tops got in shit couple weeks ago because they left with 100 000+ documents on their hardware and joined nvidia
only reason I know about that

thats honestly quite weaksauce ;p

well don't blame me for not being spot on, console hardware isn't really what I keep a eye on
it's what you can run on it I look out for

also, 12gb is an odd amount of ram
unless it was running triple channel

who knows, we'll find out next month
all I know is ms and sony said screw a console and just built a average computer

12:21 AM
Thats cause computers are superior gaming systems ;p
and they reduce cost of game design
there's a reason the original xbox WAS a pc

to be honest, neither is superior a console is just a computer with a OS designed to play games
a normal pc is just a computer with OS designed for day to day going, but now they've both reached the same point
day to day go and gaming as you can install either OS on each of them

@user88311: on the other hand, my 5 year old PC does fine. I can replace parts. I can select what goes in. ;p

you can with a console to, it just takes a hell of a lot more work
welll I'm tired of working on my computer for tonight, @JourneymanGeek @Hennes I'll talk to you tomorrow, I'm just going to warm it up a bit and use the usb ethernet adapter i bought right now

12:36 AM
Can someone tell me how I can move Windows Restore to D:\ to reduce the wear on my SSD?

12:54 AM
@allquixotic ?

Bob
1:08 AM
@Ariane Probably not possible...

1:25 AM
@Bob Really? Not even with a symbolic link? Sad.

1:36 AM
@Hennes It makes me wonder, I can understand A piece of hardware having issues, but not multiple at the exact time, so still have to feel as the defender update had something to do with it

Q: Cannot delete files, nothing seems to work

Brion FoulkeI am on Windows 7. I have some files on my computer leftover from an old version of Photoshop. (I think... I don't remember exactly where they came from, but they seem to be Adobe files.) There are 124 of them in a folder, which I have named "KILL." (I don't remember what the original name of...

Is the comment I posted okay? Do I have the right to do that?

Bob
2:33 AM
@Ariane Something to do with the volume shadow service, which is quite... picky... at the best of times. But I'm not sure.
It might be possible.
@Ariane What was the comment?

3:00 AM
@Bob Asked about a bug of mine. He said it was not okay. Ir emoved it.
Seriously, not having a good experience with Linux
Third distribution I'm going to attempt to make a bootable USB drive with. >_>
I just want to delete a freaking file. ._.

Bob
@Ariane what do you mean?

Well, they all bugged in one way of another so far. Not able to boot into them properly.
Trying Puppy now.

Bob
..
Knoppix on USBalways worked for me
OpenSUSE took a lot of fiddling

Knoppix? Isn't it a huge thing, like 2 GB?
Anyway, gonna try this new distribution now.

Bob
Kubuntu worked, but started with 0 brightness (black) on a laptop
@Ariane 3.5 GB DVD, or 700 MB CD

3:07 AM
@Bob Yeah... Not gonna explode my download limit further. :p
Seriously, this is heck of a pain in the butt to delete a file.

Bob
Tried Unlocker?

Yush

Bob
what's so special about this file?

It's a folder actually
I tried to move my ProgramData folder, but it failed. Now I can't try again because I have a locked ProgramData on my secondary drive.

Bob
hm
try chkdsk

3:11 AM
That has chances of corrupting a disc from what I know.

Bob
there's always a chance
likewise with the linux ntfs driver

3:32 AM
@Bob I succeeded, somewhat.
I had created the symbolic link from Linux, which didn't work and booted Windows weird with resetted stuff, but then I did a mklink to ProgramData2, and then went back to Linux to delete ProgramData and rename ProgramData2 to ProgramData. Seems to have worked, though Programmes (translated overlay) went back to being called Program Files for some reason.

Bob
4:12 AM

:\

Wha?
@Bob Anyway, uhm. I made a mistake. Do you know how to bring a folder's attributes to "hidden" instead of "hidden and a protected system file"? I tried attrib -s but looks like that's not it.
Looks like he left.

Bob
@Ariane .. it is attrib -s AFAIK

Really?

Bob
you might need to attrib -s -h followed by attrib +h

I'll try this
It worked. Thanks!

Bob
4:29 AM

Now to repairing the Acrobat I broke by being too hasty...

Bob
@Ariane Windows command line tools follow funny rules when dealing with system/hidden files :\

It'sh fine. I acted quite funny myself by symlinking a system folder partly using Linux. It has a right to revenge. :p
Sigh
Now this is weird
acrodist.exe - System erroer
Impossible to start the program because ACE.dll is missing on your computer. Try reinstalling the program to correct this problem. Hello, mister program. This is what I'm currently doing, trying to reinstall you. ._.

Bob
:\

It's weird enough that Adobe Acrobat was the only program to be broken by my manipulations...

Bob
4:33 AM
uninstaller failing?
@Ariane It's an Adobe product. 'nuff said.

No, no, I uninstalled it fine. Trying to install it at the moment.
@Bob But weirder is none of the brazillon other Adobe programs I have broke, I think. xD

Bob
o.O

Oh christ
I hid the symlink
I think I shouldn't have.
Trying again...
Looks like it's working. The hidden programdata link was the problem.
I've never done so much destruction and repairing in my whole life. I think I technically ruined and restored my computer 4 times tonight.
Sigh. Actually, all 64-bit Adobe applications are broken. GOnna reinstall, it seems.

Bob
4:53 AM
@Ariane funfunfun
spent half a week fixing my Windows boot once
cause I was stupid after replacing RAM and accidentally reset the BIOS
starting it in IDE mode (instead of RAID/AHCI), which corrupted the Windows' boot config
worst part? the corruption was unnecessary if Windows handled it properly

Aaah. Tonight I deleted my boot config. Thanksfully the Windows DVD fixed it. It was still on my old installation's drive, so when I tried to erase and format it, booting became impossible. :p

Bob
@Ariane I don't like the automatic repair :\
it works (sometimes), but the new BCD is missing some stuff
bare minimum to boot, essentially

BCD?

Bob
Boot Configuration Data or something

Why is it taking over a minute to delete 2 GB on an SSD?

Bob
4:58 AM
the BCD is a flat-file (I think...) that replaced boot.ini as of Vista

And what is it missing?

Bob
@Ariane depends on number of files
@Ariane can't remember. I can check when Iget home, if yo uwant
I learned to always backup my BCD

Ah, must be that.

Bob
it doesn't really change anyway, so just one backups saves hours of pain
Deleting data is actually entirely a metadata operation (unless wiping, i.e. overwriting)
so its speed is in files/sec, not bytes/sec

Uh-huh...

Bob
5:00 AM
and NTFS's metadata is notoriously slow, according to @allquixotic

Mhm, okay.

Bob
basically, it just marks each file as deleted (and maybe does something with the free-space maps? that might be affected by file size - no noticeable difference between 1 kB and 100 GB anyway) in the file system's metadata
but does not touch the actual data on the drive

Mhm, okay.

Bob
..not sure if you agree or have no clue what I'm on about :P

Does Windows have an option making a backup of my "fully installed but not so used system" for easier reinstalling?

Bob
5:02 AM
I'm bad at explaining things :\

No, I understood.

Bob
@Ariane System image
(start menu search it)
I believe it also lets you burn a bootable disc

Okay.

Bob
though i personally prefer third party imaging tools

I'll do that once I'm sure I've repaired all of my things.

Bob
5:03 AM
I think the Windows DVD also lets you restore a system image
just a warning, it can get rather... large

Yush, it does, I think

Bob
another reasonI use third party imagers; they often compress more

How large?

Bob
I'm not entirely sure it compresses at all :S
so maybe all used space on your C (system) drive?
it might skip the user profiles
I honestly don't know

I very much hope it does compress, because else it'll fill up my tertiary drive and I won't be able to use it for anything else. :p
Say
I bought a new Windows 8 key today, which I installed onto my hardly-trustable-source DVD installation. It works, but I'm afraid the DVD had errors and such. Do you think it's possible, once I receive my real DVD, to tell it to completely wipe Windows 8 but keep all data and apps, and then reinstall Windows 8?

Bob
5:08 AM
umm.. maybe? XD
upgrade installs work half the time
I'm not sure if the 'refresh' option (which reinstalls the system byt keeps Metro apps and user data - does not keep Desktop programs) can be run exclusively from a DVD (i.e. don't use HDD files)

It can, but desktop programs is preciously what I don't want to lose.
precisely*

Bob
but corruption of your original DVD is unlikely - I'm pretty sure the Windows installer verified checksums of installation files
at least, I hope so...
@Ariane yea, Refresh is useless for that
stupid MS

I wonder what it'd do if I asked it to upgrade even though there's technically no upgrade to be done

Bob
nothing
you have to modify a text file somewhere IIRC
(which requires reburning the DVD? I think)
or maybe that was ust upgrading from the previews

Hmmmm.
I guess I'm just gonna keep it as is for now.

Bob
5:12 AM
there was something in the starred sidebar about a registry entry earlier, I think
uhh
gotta go back to work -_-
I'll be back later

Sure. Bye. I'll be sleeping when you get back, so~

5:22 AM
I wonder why Corsair Link says my hard drives are at 0 °C. Maybe they don't have thermometers?

6:11 AM
maybe
or its not reading the smart data for whatever reason
what's cosair link a part of? your PSU?

6:57 AM
looking at a new build - this what I'm thinking. flipkart.com/wishlist/sathyabhat Thoughts?

quite a few ;p
silence oriented build or...?
hm, they don't have the M12? odd
eh, based off what flipkart has, none I guess
;p
seasonic power supplies are pretty nice. I got an M12, and its pretty silent
@Sathya: I assume you've got disks/case already?

@JourneymanGeek no particular orientation - general browsing/gaming system
@JourneymanGeek case, will be borrowing a friend's CM690. HDD, yeah will need that too - budget not allowing for a SSD

@Sathya: ahh. Was about to suggest doing a price comparison with an M12. Also, least here,kingston ram is a little cheaper (and about as reliable)
borrowing? ;p
@Sathya: eh, for 'basic' stuff. you MIGHT be able to find a cost effective small SSD
(and blah, I hate having to convert prices ;p)

7:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek ;p
well, he got a Cm 690 shipped to him. But he never bought a desktop. so lying unused.
@JourneymanGeek M12?

@Sathya: yeah seasonicusa.com/M12II.htm slightly more powerful I think but very similar

ah

ah
@JourneymanGeek such as?

7:50 AM
@Sathya: Well flipkart dosen't seem to have any
but look at something in the 80 gig range?

@JourneymanGeek look at onlyssd.com

hmm, what kinda budget do we have?
(In INR... else I'd need to convert from INR to USD to INR .... ;p)
onlyssd.com/ssd-price-india/buy-ssd-sata/… this is a pretty good option. slightly pricy, but reliable as hell
(significantly larger, but its a good drive, and not much more expensive)

8:12 AM
@JourneymanGeek nice.. the Intel one looks attractive

8:29 AM
@GrahamWager nice, congrats!

8:42 AM
I'd warn though, that windows 8, you arn't going to notice MUCH improvement in boot speed
unless you reboot.
(for that matter, kubuntu boots up blisteringly fast on the old 40gb 5400 rpm laptop drive I use)

8:54 AM
eheh
apparently the US army uses IRC

Bob
9:51 AM
@JourneymanGeek AKA two boats meeting on an ocean?

10:37 AM
IRC is such a horrible protocol

IRC sorta works
As long as there's internet

Oh, it's great to use. I just wouldn't want to implement anything with it :P
I've written a client in Java and in ActionScript. Both were horrible experiences :D

Bob
ActionScript?
I'll bet :P

It was even before AS3 and I had to use the dreaded XMLSocket
Which is obviously a problem because IRC doesn't build on XML :P

10:53 AM
lol
@OliverSalzburg: good thing there's plenty of good irc clients? ;p

@JourneymanGeek I don't know any good ones and I've been using IRC for more than 10 years ;D

@OliverSalzburg: I use hexchat, with quite a lot of theme tweaks ;p

And I had to implement the ones I did because they were part of larger applications that needed chat functionality
@JourneymanGeek I use mIRC because I still have a ton of scripts written in it :P

@OliverSalzburg: wierdly, thats pretty much the same reason I use xchat
and my theme's followed me from linux, to silverex to hexchat

@JourneymanGeek I also don't really care enough to pick a new client :D

10:56 AM
;p
There's also a few hosted chat clients that work (iris is what I favour these days)

I used Mibbit on the road for a bit

Bob
The last time I was on IRC, I used ChatZilla..
that was ages ago :\

@Bob ChatZilla was never OK to use ;D

Bob
@OliverSalzburg hm?

11:06 AM
@Bob You may not be aware of it. But when you close your client and it prints 12:34:56 * Bob (user@host.org) Quit (Quit: Using ChatZilla 2.3.784)... that's not good
People know...

Bob
what's wrong with it?

@Bob Most likely nothing. It's some wannabe IRC eliteist bullshit :P

Bob
...
screw it
IDC which client I use
long as it works
been ages anyway, the few times I need to now I just use an online client

Everything other than typing every PRIVMSG into telnet is not hardcore enough obviously

11:18 AM

I used to use konversation

Yay \o/

which lets you set your own client string

Level 8 German. So proud!

I set something very impolite ;p

11:30 AM
What does ibooter.us do?
How did I get to that site anyway? WTF

12:05 PM
>:(

LOL

damn you creative
and your crappy drives

Q: How can I change my MS DOS to window 7?

user194575today I buied new lenovo and it had MS DOS so I wanna use window 7 in lenovo How can i change to window 7 from default MS DOS window ? please help me

@JourneymanGeek Who upvoted that?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...is that even possible?
I mean, buying a new computer with MS-DOS of all things on it?
heck, may as well stay in the UEFI shell

12:21 PM
I think some companies sell comptuers with freedos
they arn't allowed to sell OSless systems

Bob
@JourneymanGeek o.O
wouldn't it be easier to chuck some small linux distro on there?
less worry about hardware compatibility, too

@Bob: maybe ;p
no one EXPECTS to use freedos tho

Bob
and arguably, the UEFI shell is an OS :p

and its just one of those 'our contract says it needs to ship with SOME os'

12:41 PM
@Hennes you still asleep

More of less. :)

ah, you get that last message I sent last night before I got off

hii... damn so many pings

@allquixotic Greetings :) ping

Bob
@allquixotic ping

12:46 PM
GAH
whoa, that's awesome... a SuperUser wrote this

@allquixotic: yeah, and she answers a lot of bash questions

it's hilarious that the marketing for that product claims that it "will not hang. Ever". so apparently she's solved the Halting Problem :D
In computability theory, the halting problem can be stated as follows: "Given a description of an arbitrary computer program, decide whether the program finishes running or continues to run forever". This is equivalent to the problem of deciding, given a program and an input, whether the program will eventually halt when run with that input, or will run forever. Alan Turing proved in 1936 that a general algorithm to solve the halting problem for all possible program-input pairs cannot exist. A key part of the proof was a mathematical definition of a computer and program, what became known ...
well, maybe not, but i guess they did formal verification? O_O or are just claiming that :P

lol
and it does seem a tiny bit expensive
small market and all that ;p

People pay more for any crappy VST plugin ;P
"OMG Best! Reverb! Ever!"

Bob
1:01 PM
@OliverSalzburg Ah, audiophiles. The ones on the no-sense-with-money side of the scale...
Here's a solid platinum soaked-in-babies'-blood-to-remove-impurities 1m long cable, that'll be $1500

1:25 PM
"Please connect the cable with the right side of the cable to the amplifier"
(example on a $200 Ethernet cable for audio use)
It was forged by elves during full moon and under an oak.

1:39 PM
pfft
10K usd power cable ;p
(sadly, its a kettle lead in a garden hose full of sandblasting aggregate)

1:54 PM

@Hennes She probably should have tried attending parent/teacher conferences to get to know her child's teachers first.

@Hennes Source: Daily Star :P

a piece of high journalism...

A German consumer right organization is suing Valve
Wonder how that will turn out...
They demand that people should be able to resell their games

Bob
@OliverSalzburg wut why
oh

2:09 PM
Heh. I would love to see the result
Quite a few games to sell.

Yeah, I'd especially love to sell all the cut versions I bought by accident >:(

I got a few games which make me nauseous (e.g. Bioshock)
Sometimes the camaera/walk usage is fine, for some games it is just wrong

Bob
@Hennes FoV?

simulated 'natural' head movements.

Bob
ah.

2:13 PM
Or 'vampire the masqurade bloodline'. Old game. Nice to play. I get stuck in the first part of the game where I have to pick up a purse and get something from a car.

Bob
I remember turning off head movement (cl_bob) in CS1.6 Made aiming much easier without a distracting gun moving around.

Picking up the purse failed. I know where it is, I try to pick it up but I am not close enough. Can'g get any closer either
And the car has an item in the truck. Press the 'open, close or pickup' action button. Truck opened. Press it again to pick it up. Trunk closes. No item.
Quest style item for the next level.
18 hours player. About 10 on those two points. :(
