@ShaneMadden I used a ton of close votes today by searching on SO for migrated questions and VTCing most of the ones that got migrated to SF.

7:34 AM
G'day

7:44 AM
While hacking down stuff in our overgrown back yard, I had a visitor... unfortunately, by the time I ran inside and got my camera, he was heading out the back:

@MarkHenderson occasionally someone goes straight to the team but it looks like they flagged then emailed.

That looks like a bear.

It is indeed a small black bear... it can be exciting living in a rainforest. Quite cute and fuzzy, but very stinky.

Dan
8:06 AM
I'm failing so badly at getting Hyper V 2012 up that it hurts

@Ward I was told it can get pretty tricky dealing with an angry bear.
At least the polar bear I guess.

8:26 AM
hello
is this a place for live support?
7
lol

Dan
@mmmshuddup Nope, this is the place for insulting folk!

3 hours later…
Dan
11:47 AM
quiet today!

Could be my fault.

Columbus day. Many lucky #%$@s get it off. Bastards and whatnot.

If you’re following along at home with the 2012 Red Hat Study Buddy Group, there’s a handful of folks (myself included) who have decided to nab some Red Hat certifications before the year ends. Perhaps that will lead to better things in the year 2013, but it certainly can’t lead to worse things (famous last words?). I’ve compiled a short list of some of the more pertine

12:39 PM
@Ward Is that the mighty @ThomasPornin its natural habitat?
@HopelessN00b According to my calendar Columbus Day isn't until November 23rd.

@ScottPack Maybe you should put in a ticket with IT about that. I think your calendar might be ... not working very rightly.

12:59 PM
hmm
superuser.com/review-beta/close/38291 this on topic for SF? (that is to say, should I VTM or VTC)

On topic, but maybe not enough info to help the guy.

Dan
@HopelessN00b That's my thoughts

I just did a generic VT close. Not my fault if it ends up here ;p

Dan
I'd give it a chance, personally

@chopper3 ding me back here when you're available, need to pick your brain about DL 360 G5 memory

1:09 PM
@pauska DL 360 G5s use RAM for memory. And a little bit of ROM.

@pauska What do you want to know? I run one so might be able to help out.

Oh, sorry if I came off like I was joking... G5s really do use RAM and ROM for memory, though.

@tombull89 I can't remember if you can populate all 8 slots with a single CPU

Just ask tombull.
@pauska Up to 64 GB of memory, supported by 8 slots of PC2-5300 Fully Buffered DIMMs (DDR2-667); 4:1 interleaving; memory mirroring; online spare
Nevermind, that has nothing to do with the procs. I'd check for you, but the bosses might not be amused if I yank a proc on a production box to "check something." They sure weren't last time.

1:15 PM
What about G5 ProLiants?
@pauska What did you need?

@ewwhite @pauska wants to know if you can use 8 dimms of RAM with one proc in a G5 DL360.

@pauska Mine's dual CPU and I woudln't know off the top of my head, sorry. I dare say ewwhite can help though.

That's the last model before CPU-specific DIMMS were the norm.
So yeah, you can... There are only 8 slots on that server, though. Kinda bleh.
and the RAM for G5's is at a premium.
Oh, and you have to populate in pairs.

See, I knew this was a place for live support, despite the misleading text under the room name.

I've got 4 x 1GB of HP RAM from the DL360 going spare - I put larger modules in mine.

1:23 PM
yeah, the prices for the ram has gone up.. extremely

@HopelessN00b That would be a ticket to HR.

@ScottPack So your HR department tries to override the rest of the world too? Must be an HR thing.

@HopelessN00b Tries? They seem to be doing a pretty successful job of it. I try not to think about the consequences.

@ScottPack Clearly, your IT department is dropping the ball and not doing its due diligence in keeping the HR folks from effectively using computer resources. You guys clearly need t hire a better BOFH to deal with HR.

@HopelessN00b HR is quite good at keeping themselves from using computer resources. How else do you describe paper forms for reporting time off?

1:29 PM
@ScottPack If they're not using computers, how'd they get their heresy on your calendar?

@HopelessN00b Oh! Sorry, I understand the confusion now. The holiday schedule is posted on their departmental website, but is not integrated into the calendaring system.

@ScottPack Oh, that's much better. You've managed to contain HR to its own little online cesspool.

@HopelessN00b We can't take credit for that, unfortunatley.

@ScottPack You're not trying hard enough. You can take credit for anything.

@HopelessN00b The problem with taking credit is that you also set yourself up for taking the blame.

1:34 PM
True. So you're being smart and don't want to take the blame credit. not quite the same as being unable to take the blame credit.

@ewwhite thanks btw

I take no responsibility if it crashes and burns!

Dan
@ewwhite Ooh, too late now!

sound of plane going down in flames newwwwwwwwwwghhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Dan
I'm getting this error when installing an MSI:

The application tried to modify a protected Windows registry key

Google is so unhelpful it hurts
I appear to be one of 3 people to have ever gotten this error :(
(Oh and that's running as admin, with UAC off, too :S)

1:38 PM
Sounds to me like your installer tried to modify a protected Windows registry key. :)

Fire up ProceXPlorer and unprotect the key.

@Dan Have you tried turning it off and on again?

@Dan tried running compatibility mode?

Dan
@HopelessN00b Don't tempt me
@pauska I haven't, no, but I'm 99.9% certain it's properly Win7 compatible

@Dan Oh, c'mon... who knows better about your system? You, or some developer in the Pacific northwest?

1:55 PM
Obviously, some developer in the Pacific Northwest.

@MichaelHampton Yeah, the silence is telling. Understandable, (I'd be in a shamed silence too) but telling.

@pauska Hiya

Dan
@HopelessN00b Hrmph

Always trust Microsoft. They know what's best for you and your enterprise.

2:05 PM
@Chopper3 Got my answer from ewwhite. Fuck me G5 memory modules are expensive.

only JUST got right a shitload of it too :( to be fair I did offer it around on here first

@DJPon3 What a bizarre question
Where's the IIS daemon :D

We aren't going to help you with your black-hat SEO. Sounds like RIPE was perfectly justified in rejecting these invalid requests. — Michael Hampton 24 secs ago

@MichaelHampton What the hell is black-hat SEO? I know what SEO is, but isn't black-hat a security term?

@tombull89 Using unethical or illegal techniques to increase your site's position in the search rankings.

@MichaelHampton So, something like blog/comment spam?

Dan
I hate corporate bullshit as much as the next person, but this sounds dangerous:

No Project Managers – we believe in hands-on delivery, not managing expectations.
No titles – we are flat in structure and everyone has the same opportunity to step up!

@tombull89 Spamdexing gives a good overview of what's going on here.

Fuck playing team fortress at work. I'd rather just go home or go out and just not be at work

Dan
@DJPon3 Ah, it has some merit on a quiet afternoon when the office needs manning

2:31 PM
Dunno about you guys, but I'd prefer two 19" or 22" screens than one 27".

@Dan That's how Valve operates
And they're huge
Also, the incorrect use of 's in "iMac's" really turns me off.

yes. It's fussy but sadly I agree with you
Sad that I'm that fussy too, not that I agree with you!

haha
It's like people that write stuff like "Looking for a candidate with experience in Windows and MACs"
You don't fucking capitalize the whole thing unless you want a L2 switching expert.

the OP has flagged this to say it's not a dupe and can it be reopened. So far me, Splatne and ChrisS have looked at it and I guess are leaving it because we don't have a clue - advice appreciated

Q: Migrating Xen PV to KVM (not Xen HVM to KVM)

Frank Possible Duplicate: Migration from Xen to KVM I have two different servers, Xen PV Server and KVM Server. How the easiest way for migrating Xen PV to KVM on different server ?

The OP has even edited it to clarify

@Iain It looks exactly like a dupe, hell it's almost word-for-word the same. If the poster believes he has a different question, he should ask the different question.

2:38 PM
I can't run 2 demons Consider yourself lucky. You know how much an exorcism costs when it's to remove just a single demonic presence? — HopelessN00b 13 secs ago

@MichaelHampton I'm not familiar with the difference between PV and HVM so cluelessness ensues

@Iain For converting the VM to KVM, there is no difference.
You run virt-v2v and get on with your day.
A question I wouldn't consider a duplicate would read something like: I read this SF question and ran virt-v2v and here's what happened, how do I fix it?

@tombull89 All these DevOps guys ads are making me really curious... I'm very tempted to make a fake identity, submit a fake resume and see what they'd pay a guy like to go all DevOps and fuck up environments with 100% more efficiency.

@HopelessN00b Well, that one was in London, but I dare say if you have a look around on Careers you'll find one a bit closer to home.

@tombull89 Yeah, there's actually a couple real close to home. I'm a little hesitant about trying it though, on the off-chance that they're actually offering what I'd consider a fair price for my sysadmin soul.

2:45 PM
@HopelessN00b Et tu, Brute

@MichaelHampton Meh, soul's a vestigial organ anyway. Can't remember the last time I used mine, or even what it's for, so if I can get a good price for it...

tasty, tasty cookies... I need people to bake for me :(

3:22 PM
@Chopper3 just my kind of luck then :) it's OK, the company pays for it. Was going to just buy the complete 64GB, but it's no point really with prices going so high. Looks like 4x4GB will suffice.

3:54 PM
Why are RAM prices on the climb?
(I haven't had to buy hardware in a long time)

I don't think they are, it's just that memory for the G5 is limited supply

Oh I see
DDR2 probably?

@MDMarra Shortage of virgins so we've been sacrificing rams.

Yep

4:20 PM
I can't vote to close a question with an open bounty?!

I can..

Did you actually try it?

which one?

Here's the question I was going to hit Too Localized on:

Q: Setting up PTR in Plesk

Ivanhoe123I added the following entry (Plesk -> Domain settings -> DNS Settings): 12.345.678.912 / 24 PTR mail.domain.com The IP address matches the mail.domain.com IP address as that is the one which sends out emails. I checked the PTR here and the checker says that there is no PTR record. I tried with...

4:46 PM
Well, that's not really a valid close IMHO
The author doesn't understand that he can't just create PTR records on his own

4:56 PM
@pauska 99.9% of our questions lately are a total failure to understand how the internet works

yeah, we're getting flooded by programmers who suddenly are sysadmins
F U C K Y O U D E V O P S

@pauska flagged for offensive.
<3

mornin gents.
@MichaelHampton It's a Plesk-only question. It needs to be migrated or hammered close.
I was under the impression from the meta question that Qs that were specific to one of those crutches and were not answerable without going outside the app to the CLI were off-topi?

@MDMarra FB-DIMMs were something of a cul-de-sac

I was under the impression from @voretaq7 's meta answer that Qs that were specific to one of those crutches and were not answerable without going outside the app to the CLI were off-topic?

5:12 PM
@pauska I can get you that RAM cheap.
Thanks eewhite. Yup, I think MegaCLI is ugly - but their controllers are top notch, and CacheCade seriously kicks butt! I don't care about the HP integrated management - more of a PITA than not, if you ask me. I've already got a VM set up for syslog, CACTI and a few other management tools - all with email alerts. Covers my entire infrastructure, not just the HP specific stuff. I tend to find the vendor-specific solutions deceptive. At first they seem like a good deal because they are "free", but very quickly you find yourself locked into them to keep that "ease of use". — EricEE 1 min ago
@chopper3 This is why I think HP doesn't appeal to people like this...

@ewwhite It's a great response if you don't give a single fuck about support
Is this the guy that got a free G5 for a non-profit?

Yes
My coworkers are the same way...
so we battle SuperMicro problems that would never surface in an HP environment

@ewwhite I agree

@ewwhite To be fair, HP's management software really sucks compared to Dell's. But that's no excuse to ditch it because "lock in" or whatever stupid reason he had.

@HopelessN00b I don't use the full management suite, but I make sure to leverage the agents and monitoring available for the hardware.
I think HP and Dell solutions are about equal, now that they both have repos.

5:22 PM
I mean, if you accept handouts for out-of-warranty products because you have no funding, then that's a fine attitude to have. The problem is that sometimes these people take jobs in other areas that can actually afford support and brand-name kit and they bring the white-box attitude with them.
White-box is great for poor hand-me-down NPs and giants like Google. If you fall anywhere in the middle, then it's obviously a bad choice.

@ewwhite I've found Dell's a lot more useful, intuitive and easy to manage/integrate... but they both will do what you need, even if I find it a bigger pain in the ass with HP. Just no excuse for not using them, IMO.

They guy is talking about CacheCade from LSI... lsi.com/channel/products/storagesw/Pages/…

Never heard of it.

@ewwhite Do they have a really bad rep, or am I thinking of someone else?

I was commenting more on the "fuck it, i'll build it myself" mentality

5:25 PM
LSI is good hardware... but its tools suck.
and firmware and shit is really flaky.

Isn't everything really just rebadged LSI anyway?

I have to use LSI for my ZFS solutions..
Naw, HP's controllers are their own

@ewwhite Right, that's what it was. I remember now. That was a week of pure hell.

Dell's PERC controllers are usually LSI

They manufacture their own controller chips?

5:27 PM
@MDMarra Hell, we don't even do white box anymore

@MDMarra It's their own spec/format/toolset.

Interesting. I thought it was similar to Dell - rebadged LSI w/ custom firmware/tools.

There's nothing wrong with white-box (though I prefer a black case).

For personal use.

The LSI/3ware stuff in our SuperMicro's is what got my boss into the attitude of RAID being more of a PITA than it's worth.

I mean, yes, the processor on the card may be something more standard, but HP's Smart Array technology is proprietary.

5:29 PM
whats that mean

?

@Adrian His ISP got the message apparently so y'all can close it :P

@voretaq7 has a bounty on it.

5:44 PM
@voretaq7 Can't close it with a bounty on it, the bounty has to be gotten rid of first.

@MichaelHampton He's ignoring us. He clearly needs to be spanked with a cat of 9 tails made out of wet spaghetti noodles.

@MichaelHampton meh - it wont take votes huh?

@voretaq7 big red box saying that it has a bounty

@Adrian stupid bounty
{| |} HMS Bounty, also known as HM Armed Vessel Bounty, was a small merchant vessel purchased by the Royal Navy for a botanical mission. The ship was sent to the Pacific Ocean to acquire breadfruit plants and transport them to British possessions in the West Indies. That mission was never completed, as disagreements between Lieutenant William Bligh and his acting Sailing Master, Fletcher Christian, led to a revolt by half of the crew and their seizure of the vessel on 28 April 1789, leading to the Mutiny on the Bounty. Origin and description Bounty was originally known as collier ...

Honestly, I think the minimum rep for a bounty ought to be about 250.

5:51 PM
@Adrian I think you should be able to add to a bounty pot. But "there are no plans to work on that" <pout>

@voretaq7 I could support that. But, we being ServerFault, don't count for much.

@Adrian welcome to VTC club

@Iain Thank you. I'm rather enjoying it at the moment. And amused that simply by working me way through the queue over the next 2-3 months I get another gold badge =)

@Adrian cool

Had a nice chat with an old friend over breakfast yesterday. Definite eye-opener and pretty much echoes what @ewwhite is saying about DevOps. Time for me to focus on light-duty programming languages like Python instead of certifications, otherwise this crappy situation here is likely to be the pinnacle of my career.

6:00 PM
@voretaq7 We can't put close votes on a question with a bounty on it. It's one of those stupid status-bydesign things.

@MichaelHampton status-broken-by-design

@Iain Nice. Will give that a read too. I spend too much time dinking around configuring email and database systems, need to start scripting ALL that stuff.

Doesn't fucking markdown let us post meta tags?

is that what you wanted ?

6:05 PM
More or less.

:P
(and no - all tags get mapped to the site the room is associated with -- in our case the main site)

@Adrian That's about right.

@ewwhite Talk about crappy timing. He quit Amazon right before AWS hit the big time, which he absolutely loves.
Talked to my little birdies inside Microsoft this weekend too. Azure has big problems. I think I'm going to stay the hell away from that even for the MS Networking stuff I'm building here.

Q: How to connect frontend and backend Linux servers using cable?

alfishI'm trying to connect a web server A, with a database server B so that they have the least possible delay. Both servers run Debian, are on the same rack and are connected together by a cable on their second Ethernet port . here are the /etc/network/interfaces specs. Server A (front) auto lo if...

6:13 PM
@Adrian Hell, we could tell Azure has big problems from the outside.

I'm debating whether or not to vote to close this

@MDMarra We don't have a "you should have learned this before being hired" close reason.

@MichaelHampton This is true.

@MDMarra WTF?!? "Networks always start with even numbers." ???

@MikeyB Network ID.

6:17 PM
He probably means "The network address is always even, by virtue of having no lower bits set."

Annoys the hell out of me when people obfuscate RFC1918 IPs.

@MikeyB Wow! That's impressive.

My decoding of that?

@MikeyB The fact that you can fluently parse Ijit-ese. =)

Uh, what the hell? Who upvoted that?

I mean, obviously you connect them by forcing a power cable into the Ethernet ports, and probably with a sledgehammer.

6:28 PM
@Adrian Well, it shouldn't annoy you. Creating obscure RFC1918 networks is gold when you need VPN connectivity to other sites, or to employees home network (like an IP VPN phone).

@pauska Eh? I meant in the questions. Like this one: serverfault.com/questions/436071/…

@MikeyB wait what?

I'd rather have people replace the numbers with Xs instead since it's clear that it's obfuscation then and not a mere misconfiguration.

aaah, I see.

The network address is always even?
as in an even number?

6:31 PM
@MDMarra Network ID cannot be an odd number since the 32nd bit is never used unless it's a single IP assignment.

oh right
That's one of those things that you just do and don't think about haha
Hey, can one of you mods give this fine gent a time out for his comment on my answer?

I can't see any offending comment?

@MDMarra what was he responding to? surely not your comments?
@pauska gone already - quite nasty though

@pauska "Gimmie teh codez!"

Apparently he deleted it already or it was deleted already

6:33 PM
@pauska I think the comment was already flagged / deleted. Only a mod can see those.

GIEF ME THE ETH ROUTING CODE THX

The 1st one at 37 minutes ago was snotty enough as it is.

Yeah he said I was a fat fuck (I weight 190lbs) and an arrogant shit and that I make serverfault a shitty place to come to
almost verbatim

Oh, so it was worse than "Gimmie teh codez." Cool.

And that he can't be the only one that cringes when he sees me answer a question.
If that doesn't deserve a suspension or -100 for offensive I don't know what does.
2

6:34 PM
@MDMarra Maybe he was talking about me?

@Adrian Eh, I wouldn't want to work for AWS anyway.

@Chopper3 He commented on my answer haha

@MDMarra Or - 613, maybe?

@MDMarra I agree, he deserves to be spoken to - however nasty even I can be I never swear in my comments and his comment was inappropriate

@ewwhite From what I've heard, all those big companies with local offices are losing staff faster than they can hire them. Google is apparently losing staff about 10% faster than they can be replaced.

6:35 PM
I'm sure @voretaq7 or @ChrisS can see the deleted comment

Who what?

I asked that someone suspend that gentleman for his comment, but by the time I linked it was already deleted.

@ewwhite They're apparently learning that they can't hire people if they get a reputation for burning them out and punting them right before their options vest.

who deletes what now with teh wing-wang?

@Adrian Probably true.

6:36 PM
@MDMarra was it the OP that commented?

@pauska Ya

yep

@pauska It was. He was a piece of work, DO MY JOB FOR ME

Because I told him to read man route instead of giving him a config file to copy & paste
I was actually pretty polite about it too

well, @voretaq7 should be able to dig up that comment
I can only see deleted answers

6:37 PM
@MDMarra Did you edit your Answer before the 5 minute timer was up?

Nope
Not at all

@JoelESalas why the past tense?

rest of his comments vanished aswell

Still does want teh codez, far as I can tell.

Actually, not true. I added "persistent" in front of "static route" but nothing that changed the tone or context.

6:39 PM
@ChrisS did you click on mod, and does it have a line like, "show 3 deleted comments" ?

@JeffFerland I'm pretty sure he was asking me (in a polite way) "were you a fucking asshole and provoked him, then edited within the 5 minute window"
To which, the answer is no.

Oh
shrug

@JeffFerland Yes.

I'll go wear my dunce hat now.

:D

6:42 PM
@MDMarra No offense, but he went off the deep end pretty quick... Usually it takes a lot of back-n-forth before it gets to that level.

@ChrisS I'mma go with "He's a little bit mentally unbalanced"

@MDMarra The Provoke-And-Edit is a time-honored trolling technique

@ChrisS Yep, I understand. I'm not offended by you asking
I wouldn't have asked you to suspend someone that I trolled

@voretaq7 I'm waiting in anticipation for his response.

Cause remember @MDMarra, you really are an ass
5
:-D

6:44 PM
I browsed through his old questions to see if I had answered any.
None that I could quickly see. I'll go through better later. Maybe he didn't like me from something earlier.

I still want to see the complete shitshow from start to finish

@JoelESalas You'll have to convince a blue to post the deleted content :)

@JoelESalas Apologies for pissing you off this weekend. If you still want to have a drink this week, lemme know.

Aloha

@AlexanderJanssen Oahu

6:49 PM
first time here, how's the etiquette here? fresstyle as long as it's on-topic?

@voretaq7 I'd sure as F rather be sitting on a beach there than in a basement in Seattle.

@AlexanderJanssen Insult management and get a star.

@JoelESalas Sorry, we're supposed to have some sort of consent from the user before posting delete comments. Or anything found in our "mod-only" sections.

@ChrisS @JoelESalas or a bribe. Preferably in a stable currency. Or cookies.

Thanks for catching that @MDMarra . Poor guy's way over his head, though.

6:50 PM
@AlexanderJanssen anything (except being a dick + nsfw) is allowed, just don't use us as live support :)

@voretaq7 sounds excellent. Just how I like work.

I can say is was colorful and enough to warrant a "first offense" suspension.
Would have been better if he has used spell-check before posting, but close counts.

@pauska sounds good!

@AlexanderJanssen and oh, big props for the tumblrbeast avatar.
Oatmeal is the shit

@pauska I LOVE THE OATMEAL

6:51 PM
@ChrisS psel ckeh?

@voretaq7 Took my users YEARS before they believed that I really did accept peanut butter cookies as bribes for out-of-band prioritization of tickets.

If I wouldn't be married or straight, I would've married Matthew right away :)

@Adrian . . . and now you're in danger of becoming fat? :)

@voretaq7 Fat-er. Instead of getting skinny-er, which is the desired outcome.

@Adrian your users could bake BAD cookies...
... but that would be correspondingly less effective as a bribe I suppose.

6:52 PM
Welcome to Server Fault chat. Here are some things that might be good for you to know. Talk about stars: get stars. Talk about dumb things your users do: get stars. Talk about dumb things your coworkers do: get stars. Talk about markdown being broken: get stars.

This isn't live support, but as long as you're not a dildo and you've been here a handful of times, we help each other out.

@voretaq7 No, they're sufficiently scared of me that they wouldn't do that.

***DEMONSTRATE*** that markdown is broken.
Get stars.

@pauska hah. U FAIL AT BREAKING MARKDOWN SIR!

@MDMarra excellent... I ain't no Dildo but I know a few morons. I'd be happy to share their moronic actions for great justice and general amusement
