Q: What presentation software suits my needs?

clawsBackground: I'm teaching biology to 12th grade students. The syllabus I'm teaching is huge. I mean literally, very huge. There is a lot for students to remember. There are no less than 1000 facts (weird names, dates etc) for students to remember. They'll have to remember all of them, they don't ...

the lesson load looks insane.
@Sathya @jokerdino ^ god I feel sorry for indian students

WOW
> he syllabus I'm teaching is huge. I mean literally, very huge. There is a lot for students to remember. There are no less than 1000 facts (weird names, dates etc) for students to remember. They'll have to remember all of them, they don't have a choice. The notes I compiled for their learning itself is upto 80 printed pages(Just the bullet outline & facts). That's just one chapter. We have 34 chapters. (Yeah! we are from India :).
from Kharagpur, no less

What's so special about kharagpur?

home to IIT Kharagpur, known as the "best" IIT
Kharagpur (KGP) () is an industrial city in India. It is located in the Midnapore West district of the state of West Bengal. Kharagpur is home to one of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Kharagpur also has one of the biggest railway workshops in India with the longest railway platform in the world [1072.5 m]. Kharagpur has the first underground Air Force station in Kalaikunda and it also has one more Air Force station in Salua. There have been plans by the IAF to allow civil flights in Kalaikunda. Q: XP user logout issue but shut down proper

Ghost AnswerI am getting a issue when I logout my user account in XP for changing the user account while I am getting proper shut down.When I logout my account then nothing happens. Please give me proper solution. I already searched but not got proper solution.

jeez
why do people have to write such crappy incomprehensible questions?
3
why they do they assume we know what's in their head & we can see what's going on in front of their eyes?

@Sathya +1

@Sathya: how much rep before we get psycic powers again? ;p

Hello?
Journeyman?
I want to image my ssd drive and in case of emergency restore image to another drive but i suppose it must be done withing bootloader from USB stick. I just want to know how i can make USB ports bootable so i can restore image to a drive that is using USB port.

9:09 AM
@JohnVice You need to check in your BIOS that boot from USB is enabled - it's not something you do on the ports themselves.

9:20 AM
@tombull89 I have this option but i am concerned if i will be able to access storage devices that connect to USB ports. In Windows i can connect USB storage device any time and get access but how will this work out in DOS?

dos?
Why would you use dos?
any decent backup software these days comes with either a linux or winpe live disk
@JohnVice ^ and what @tombull89 says is right.

Q: 1tera flop cluster?

AdobeI want to buy a $40000 1 tera flop cluster to keep it in a room. What are the standard configurations? Cluster is supposed to do molecular dynamics simulations on biological systems. I'm proposed a 4 pc with 8 cores each by the selling company I'm deadling with. It looks like I also need infi...

How in the.. what?

lol. also crossposted.

@JourneymanGeek I don't know what system does emergency USB use and assumed it is DOS. How will i see that drive letter appears after USB storage device is connected?

@JohnVice: eh, mind if I walk you through the process? It'll be easier to understand

@JourneymanGeek This is long story i fear. I just want to know if Linux which bootloader operates on will recognize connected USB storage device just like Windows does and i will be able to perform backup restoration?

er. We have a bit of a difference in terminology ;p

9:49 AM
@OliverSalzburg Is this website about biology as well?

Yes, the restore disk will detect the USB device
(in most cases)

@JourneymanGeek I like how he has the most important stuff already mapped out. 1. It will have 1 Teraflop 2. It will cost $40k 3. It will be a cluster

and this is why you do a trial run before you actually ever need to restore

Besides that, everything is open

@OliverSalzburg: and you can get a teraflop off a single video card ;p
@JohnVice: here's my advice. Do a backup using whatever you're using. test doing a restore. See if it gets to the point where you detect the USB device

9:51 AM
So every one of those 8 core machines cost $10k?

@OliverSalzburg: XD.

@JourneymanGeek I wonder why i used DriveImage XML now... It creates DAT files and XML huge file which is unique to this program. Better used Parted Magic and did so from withing bootloader.

ow
you'd need to set up a winpe disk for using that
I use macrium reflect
its pretty nice, and one of their devs is a SU user ;p
You can back up from windows, restore from a linux live disk

@JourneymanGeek DriveImage does not have USB/CD bootloader?

lemme check
also you are using 'bootloader' incorrectly ;p
bootloader = grub, ntldr or bcd
you're referring to the recovery environment

9:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek And in smartphones it is called bootloader.

er, not really

@JourneymanGeek And how?

Q: what is the difference between meego, android and kubuntu?

hugemeowi know all the three os are linux based system, and the formmer two is designed for embeded system. so android and meego's power management, memory management may be quite different from kubuntu, so what is the difference? and is there any tutorial to tell this kind of difference. somebody said ...

lemme check ;p

you can write an 600 page book on this

9:54 AM
@JourneymanGeek There is ROM and there is bootloader. Bootloader is like BIOS.

hm
totally wrong
bios passes on control to bootloader. bootloader passes on to OS
runtime.org/data-recovery-live-cd.htm <- you may be able to use that to restore with driveimage xml

@JourneymanGeek OS which is ROM??

ROM = read only memory
;p
The use of the term to refer to phone firmware and OS installs is a bit odd

@JourneymanGeek Not if ROOTED

^ see above

9:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek But there are 3rd party ROMS. How do they get written to?

The term is obviously incorrect ;p

@JourneymanGeek But i will need to have driveimage xml installed there too?

that disk already has driveimage, supposedly

@JourneymanGeek Maybe ROMS cannot be written to after they are compiled finally?

I have no clue how to use it tho
maybe

9:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek You mean that bootable disk?

I'm not a phone guy, mine's stock ;p
ya

@JourneymanGeek Mine too and works better after factory restoring.
Parted Magic does not support USB boot from v5.3?

hm. See what it says
they probably figured it isn't worth the effort to support, and went with unetbootin

@JourneymanGeek This all looks complicated. I saw USB bootable thumbdrive with all needed stuff for 19$ sold on websites.

10:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek They can be trusted?

donno
As I said, I just go with clonezilla (who have a USB installer) or go with macrium reflect free kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50047.aspx who support unetbootin

@JourneymanGeek ok thank you.

How can websites that auto-detected your "desired language" be so cocky and not place a "english version" link on every page?
They want me to navigate into the settings, find the language menu and switch to English... in a language I don't understand.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg The majority of them do...just not all :P

@Bob 90% of the time where it annoys me, it's Google :P

Bob
10:18 AM
Well, the ones I go to anyway :\
Are you using a localised browser, by any chance?

@Bob No, the detection is somewhat based on the currency and time settings in Windows

Bob
Wait, what?
A webpage/site has access to that information?

The value you set for Format up there, has a lot of impact
Which is why mine is set to English (US), but is customized
The page doesn't have access to that specific settings. But that settings affects another settings which is shown to the browser as your desired language.
That's what I'm making of it at least

Bob
Well, I guess that would only happen if your browser determines the Accept-Language based on that field.

1
Q: Why do my Windows Date and Time Format Settings impact the default Language for Applications?

Oliver SalzburgThis behavior has been bugging me for ages. I live in Germany but I prefer my operating system and all installed applications to be in English. So whenever I install a Windows system of mine, I install the English version thereof. I then change the location (Control Panel -> Clock, Language, and ...

Bob
10:22 AM
Any well designed site should be looking at Accept-Language, not using some random hack looking at system settings.

@Bob That could very well be true

Bob
@OliverSalzburg But that's for local applications, not websites. Local applications and installers have access to a lot more of your preferences.

@Bob I realize that

Bob
Firefox has the config option intl.accept_languages

I don't have a single Windows VM to illustrate this...
Unless you count my clients servers I'm logged into right now, but I better not :D

10:25 AM
> It’s been replaced with what I can only call.. “Three horizontal lines” which is really weird way of calling it :\ - me
Chrome says bye to its Wrench icon http://goo.gl/fb/z4wuO
1
Q: What to call the new spanner / wrench menu in Chrome 22?

w3dMy version of Chrome has just upgraded to version 22 and the spanner (or wrench) menu button has changed to three horizontal lines!? This is going to be very confusing for all those reading documentation that refers to a "spanner menu". So, what do I now call the "spanner" menu that is no lon...

called it.

Bob
Also, general.useragent.locale

@Bob I'm not looking for means to circumvent default behavior. This is mostly an annoyance on freshly installed machines which I should customize anyway.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Well, it's only an issue if you're unhappy with the localised version of the site :P

@Bob Well, I am :D I have it fixed on my desktop (unless a site just has to use geoip)

Bob
@OliverSalzburg VPN! :P
I've had some interesting localised sites using Tor (obviously browser preferred language does not change)... YouTube is an offender in this sense

10:54 AM
@Bob Also, about chrome does not open up a window but a tab

Bob
@HackToHell What?

chrome://chrome/

Bob
Huh..?

This used to open up in a window :/

Bob
What are you talking about? :S
I normally use Firefox..

Finally!
A phone that will satisfy my professional video recording requirements!
@Bob That's what happens normally
When I switch to English (US):
Please note the bar at the top on the website
I don't know how this setting affects that, but it obviously has an effect

Bob
11:12 AM
@OliverSalzburg Internet Options > General > Languages (near the bottom of the tab)
When you change your region/language, it also changes the language in Internet Options.

Those bastards... :D
I wonder if Chrome inherits that setting...

Bob
And if you want to check: pgl.yoyo.org/http/browser-headers.php

HUmm, seems like it has its own settings

Bob
For me, it changes from Accept-Language: en-AU to Accept-Language: de-DE
I don't even need to restart the browser...
@HackToHell Ignoring stabilisation, the image quality on the 920 seems to be a lot higher..

@Bob Well, thanks for shining some light on that topic for me :)

11:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek been through parts of that man. :P
i actually was pretty good in remembering random things back then

Hey, maybe I can fix myself up a GPO to set my accepted languages in IE to EN-US O__O

@jokerdino: in my parent's day they handwrote everything
I suppose that limited the amount of crap they had to memorise slightly

i just mugged the textbooks
the books were better than the powerpoints

lol
Powerpoint is useless cause most people cram too much into them

hehe yeah

Bob
11:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek Five sentence paragraphs in one bullet point.

we get 20 lines in each of the slides O_o

Bob
Three or four such points per slide, with a small font size of course.

I think the guideline I use is 5 points a slide, no more than one sentance a slide

Bob
Oh, and often with a background that makes the text impossible to read :(

11:35 AM
one slide a minute more or less
am I a bad person to want to say "Get a phone" superuser.com/questions/480733/… for this?

@Bob It's nokia :)

^ that
their hardware does tend to be top notch
pity about their choice of OS
(tho, some of the asha phones look pretty sweet for cheapies)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek The washed out look on the other phones is most likely a software issue..
Though I won't argue against the quality of Nokia hardware :P

@Bob: or settings
eh, The actual pureview? Classic nokia
"lets make something awesome, **** everything else"
2

Nokia's phones are awesome

Bob
11:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek Well, for all of Apple's claims of ease of use, I'd expect high image quality out of the box/with default settings. I don't think they'd provide too many (advanced/detailed) settings on their camera app?

@Bob: their camera is supposed to be pretty good as well

Bob
True. It's all relative..

Q: kind of processor for computing matrices on Matlab

billI am computing matrices and determinants in Matlab (calculations that take up to 2 hours). I would like to do my calculations on a laptop. Do I need i3 or i5? Does Matlab will benefit from i5 processor for matrices calculation? What amount of RAM should I need for these calculations? I DON'T ...

sigh
asks do I need laptop x or y for Matlab. gets closed, asked not to ask shopping questions. says ok, deletes previous question
asks do I need processor x or y for Matlab.
headdesks

You need z

@jokerdino I should restart #annoydino

oops
no i didn't mean that :P

The last line is comic gold

i don't know if i should post here but i will do it anyway

So if it is not that simple, would you recommend that I delete the answer? — user63835 4 mins ago
What do I tell? huh

"Yes."
Fresh install of Windows, load NIC drivers, IE crashes on page load. =D Love it...

@r.tanner.f Internet Explorer - The browser to download another browser ;)

@SimonSheehan Yup. Too bad I can't even make it that far. =D Oh, and it's an XP box. So Windows update? Web based. =D
New plan: take old box out back and shoot it.

@r.tanner.f haha. Grab a USB with some Firefox goodness ;)

2:41 PM
But... but... I already cleaned my gun. :(
Fine :P Maybe that's a better plan.

Perhaps ;)

Anyone familiar with HTML/CSS layout details around? Quick question (need an answer soon so no time to ask on SE site): is there any tool that will tell me how the size of an <input> button is calculated? It has a custom image on it. I can't tell if the size is taken from HTML, CSS, or just whatever size the image data happens to be...
I can use Chrome / Firefox inspect element tools but when i hover over the button it just points to the line of HTML source for the <input ...> element.
(I reserve my crappy / repetitive / duplicate questions for chat, rather than asking them on SU/WM/WA :p)

xD
all I'm coming up with is ways to set the size, not how it's calculated

i am coming home. i am coming home. just the way i am coming home

3:41 PM
chrome does what i need

crash?

4:28 PM
@jokerdino If you Inspect an element in chrome, it shows you exactly where all of the padding/border/spacing comes from :)
And all my browsers crash. Chrome's the only one that reliably recovers the SU post I was in the middle of typing :D

attack of the serial downvoters: part 2

@DarthAndroid that's today. this was yesterday:
yesterday, by Sathya
user image
yesterday, by Sathya
looks like someone's angry with me

5:20 PM
TIL our email app doesn't use push notifications, it just leaves a connection open to the email server 24/7. =D Thanks IBM for wrecking my battery life.
Although it's not like I really know what "push notifications" are, but I do know gmail doesn't use 33% of my battery life...

5:37 PM
@Sathya Out of curiosity, so you get rep back for the reversal. Does the other guy also get rep back?

@Josh more often than not, yes that happens - see the second image (ref: serial downvoting reversed)

right, that's what sparked my curiosity. I saw that upon reversal, you were refunded.

@Josh yep :)

oh
, i thought I was looking at your history
my mistake :)

5:51 PM
Wait, the guy has 26K rep and was serial downvoting? Double wtf.

That looks like Sathya's rep to me...
and doesn't a downvote only cost 1 rep?

Ah, yes.
The conversation following the pictures confused me.
namely, Josh's comment just before mine.

Sry, it was me that was confused... I double confused myself. Sathya's chat profile rep is, of course, much larger than just his SU rep. I didn't put that together at first. In that case, I only thought I was confused lol

lol
which now points to ...

lawl

<---- mind in the gutter, i know

@OliverSalzburg Yeah, was wondering whether to replace them but didn't want to start a whole "hey! you've filtering a word there" train again... :D

@TomWijsman Heheh

8:27 PM
Hello everyone
I have a question about copyright infringement - basically, can an Excel Spreadsheet or a Microsoft Access Database format/text inside the database be copyrighted, as in I can't use it in my web apps?
I was thinking, since it's just text in tables maybe not

8:54 PM
@LukeAllen Laws largely depend on the country you live in
But just because the text is in a database doesn't mean it is less copyrightable than text in a book.

9:10 PM
@Oliver thanks for your reply. I live in the US. The nature of the text in the database is SOLELY taken from a code book (like the National Sprinkler Code). None of the textual content is due to their creativity or originality. The only thing original is that they figured out how to structure the content to achieve information filtering, however, if someone duplicated this manually they would end up with the same result, just like how 2+2 always equals 4

1 hour later…
10:39 PM
Y U NO PICK NEW PORT?
I really don't want to touch this IIS...

Can't you do something like Disable IIS --> Continue --> Disable GitStack --> Enable IIS really quick?

@TomWijsman Yeah, that's how you're supposed to do it

@OliverSalzburg: The almost 100% uptime approach is to first make IIS listen on two ports, then set your router to forward 80 to the second IIS port, then take port 80 out of IIS. Then proceed with GitStack, then set it all back later. :D

But I have no idea what that might impact :D
@TomWijsman Well it's a remote server...

Okay, then it's probably not an option.

10:52 PM
Oh well, didn't really need it right now on that server anyway

I haven't used a Git server so far.
Unless you really want your own hosting you could have it pull from another repo too...

Well, for company projects and stuff, I'd like to give it a try

Hmm true, probably worth it in that case.

I have to say, the GitHub wiki is extremely fun to use.
The last time I looked for a Markdown-based wiki, I only came up with stuff that didn't feel right.
Well, I guess I could just create projects on GitHub and only use the wiki...
I like where this is heading

I love you, internet.

11:02 PM
Or I guess I could just install it... github.com/github/gollum
Well then

11:14 PM
@TomWijsman Can you tell me what I messed up so that the includes branch is not shown as an individual branch in this network graph? github.com/oliversalzburg/typo3extensiongenerator/network
