4:11 AM
I'm back

welcome back

thanks

hey
hey
i've installed w7 and my Ubuntu option disappeared from boot. Now I launched Ubuntu from live usb
what should I do
to show Ubuntu option again with W7?
tahnk you

sudo fdisk -l
that will show you a list of your drives and parititions

hey
run this in terminal?

4:13 AM
yes
then find your hard drive (probably /dev/hd0)

hey
/dev/sda1 2048 206847 102400 6 FAT16
/dev/sda2 * 206848 411647 102400 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT

Q: How can I repair grub? (How to get Ubuntu back after installing Windows?)

SalahuddinI installed Windows 7, which ate Ubuntu's boot file. When starting up the computer, it now goes straight to Windows, without giving me the option of booting Ubuntu. How can I get Ubuntu back?

wait... how many drives do you have?

hey
i dont know

hmm
can you post the full output from the command including the heading?

hey
4:15 AM
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes

looks to me like recovery, windows, hptools, 2 linux, fat32 dump for ?

run sudo grub-install /dev/sda

hey
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /boot/grub (is /dev mounted?).

why not just follow the rather explicit directions in the question i linked (it has substantial number of upvotes), then drop in chat if you get stuck

hey
4:18 AM
yes, @aking1012, actually i am doing this right now, thanks :)
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ for i in /sys /proc /run /dev; do sudo mount --bind "$i" "/mnt$i"; done
mount: mount point /mnt/sys does not exist
mount: mount point /mnt/proc does not exist
mount: mount point /mnt/run does not exist
mount: mount point /mnt/dev does not exist

just mkdir on the "does not exist" stuff

hey
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ mkdir /mnt/sys
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ mkdir /mnt/sys
mkdir: cannot create directory `/mnt/sys': File exists
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ mkdir /mnt/proc
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ mkdir /mnt/run
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ mkdir /mnt/dev
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ for i in /sys /proc /run /dev; do sudo mount --bind "$i" "/mnt$i"; done
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo chroot /mnt
chroot: failed to run command `/bin/bash': No such file or directory
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$
@aking1012

I don't normally need to chroot to reinstall grub....

hey
what should i do now?
update-grub?
leave this chroot
?

then /dev/sda2 wasn't your / partition containing /bin

hey
4:22 AM
ups
i had to mount sda4
did i break something now
?

nope. you just have to redo it with sda4 instead

hey
how to redo?
@aking1012

the same way you did it the first time...just substitute sda4 for all instances of sda2

hey
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda4 /mntmount: you must specify the filesystem type
@aking1012

so do what it's telling you
and i think it's sda5 not sda4

hey
4:25 AM
everything's done, thank you @aking1012

"extended" should just be a container for the 5+ partitions and shouldn't be mounted directly iirc

hey
restarting laptop now

cool

Q: Tag synonym request: [xfce4] -> [xfce]

Eliah KaganThere is really no need for a separate xfce4 tag, since virtually any question about xfce in Ubuntu will pertain to major version 4. Previous versions are not currently supported in Ubuntu. (They use GTK+ 1!) We might get a question about an earlier version on extremely rare occasion, but I don't...

hey
hm, didn't work...
do i need to do exit
sudo reboot
or i could restart just normally

4:29 AM
after serious commands i always sync, init 6

hey
?
should i try this again/
\all steps

i would. i would also make sure sda6 isn't /boot

@hey Wait a minute. Did you just try to chroot into /dev/sda4? Isn't that the extended partition itself, rather than the Ubuntu partition? Isn't your / partition /dev/sda5?
Also hi. ;-)

@hey yeah i noted that back here

hey
@EliahKagan Hi :) Yeah, I tried sda5

4:31 AM
@hey And that didn't work either?

hey
nop...
maybe i need to start again and sudo exit
not just restart

@hey And the problem is that the chroot itself is not succeeding?

hey
no, everything succeeded
just w7 loads, no ubuntu option

@hey Ah.

hey
maybe I should try again?

4:32 AM
my question is: is it a default ubuntu install or is /boot a separate partition e.g. sda6

hey
there is no boot flags in ubuntu
i looked at gparted
only for windows

@aking1012 When we edited the partitions, there was not a separate /boot partition.

oh...you're back from a previous session. nm

hey
yeah, yesterday i removed w7, extended ubuntu space successfully, installed w7 and now only w7 loads

boot flags shouldn't matter if grub is installed to sda not sdaX
3

hey
4:34 AM
maybe i really should try again those steps
with sudo exit?

@aking1012 I was about to point that out lol :D

Speaking of which. @hey, are you making sure to run grub-install /dev/sda and not something like grub-install /dev/sda5? It needs to not have a number at the end.

@hey just exit

hey
@EliahKagan I didn't run grub-install
because it said
"At this point, you're in your install, not the live CD, and running as root. Update grub:

update-grub

If you get errors, go to step 7."
i didnt get any errors

Oh...
that's why my original command was better

4:36 AM
Well, you didn't get errors, but it didn't work ...so it's worth trying it with step 7.

hey
ok, i will try everything again, yes?

update grub does not reinstall the boot loader

@hey Well, but with step 7.

yes. try with that step

hey
sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
correct?

4:36 AM
yes

@hey Yes, that will mount your / filesystem on /mnt in the live CD. Then you can mount /sys, /proc, /run, and /dev in it and chroot into it.

hey
rebooting
it worked!
finally I've done everything I wanted, thank you all, especially Eliah

huzzah, huzzah, huzzah!

hey
cya

@hey No problem. I'm assuming you mean for the earlier help though...as for this latest part it's been mostly @aking1012 and @RolandTaylor helping.
I'm glad it's working!
BTW, now that it is.... I'm guessing you removed Windows 7 and reinstalled because it was broken somehow. But if not, you should know that you can dynamically shrink Windows too (rather than removing Windows, expanding Ubuntu, and reinstalling Windows). Both Windows and Ubuntu system partitions can be dynamically resized. Windows Vista and later (including corresponding Server versions) even have the ability to resize built into the Disk Management MMC snap-in (diskmgmt.msc).

It's not as easy as with Ubuntu, as to shrink NTFS partitions containing an installed Windows system, sometimes you have to disable virtual memory paging (i.e., swap) and hibernation (as the files used for that are "immovable"). You can re-enable them after shrinking if you had to disable them.

that and boson router simulator had to be marked as immovable for defrag because it stored its activation information in slack space, but now i'm digressing in to companies that spend more on drm than development
@jrg - for packaging ruby projects to debs not including dependencies you might find this useful stackoverflow.com/questions/3214319/…
added some recommendations to that question. somebody want to check them for accuracy/necessity? i think they should be there

SalahuddinI installed Windows 7, which ate Ubuntu's boot file. When starting up the computer, it now goes straight to Windows, without giving me the option of booting Ubuntu. How can I get Ubuntu back?

5:00 AM
@aking1012 I think the directories will always be there and you never have to mkdir them. (Theoretically you might have to, in that the system could happen to also be broken in that particular way.) Wasn't it the wrong device name (/dev/sda2 originally, then /dev/sda4) that resulted in those errors?

oh, yeah. it was the sda2 thing...

@aking1012 Also, do you mean "step 7" when you say "step 6"?

done and done
@EliahKagan thx

5:19 AM
@hey check your windows install for dangling links to /sys, /proc, /run etc. i think they got added when it was mounted inappropriately

Q: Multiple wallpapers on Ubuntu 12.04

8viusI know this has been asked to death, but I can't get it to work. I'm trying to have multiple wallpapers and I've done the whole Compiz Wallpaper plugin set the images and then use Advance Settings to Have File Manager Handle The Destop. And I still only get the 1 wallpaper I have set in system pr...

"asked to death" really lol

yes, but if you're proposing vtc, you need to provide a target

?

yes, that question has been asked a bajillion times. but if you want it closed provide an original, or at least a dupe
one guy even asked how to write his own wallpaper changer in C
they're all the same question really...just different ways of asking it

5:41 AM
okay will try to find a dupe

you could start with Nirmik's question about making multiple wallpapers work with lightdm. evidently he knows of a package to make multiple wallpapers work.

does restart session means log out?

context? probably yes

hello all

5:54 AM
@AnwarShah voted as off-topic since technically it's a feature-request/wishlist bug as noted in the answer
@GevorgHindoyan o/

@AnwarShah really?

my opinion on that one is clearly stated about 3 messages ago

can't sync folders outside /home with Ubuntu One

yes, you can afaik
but your user has to have permission to access them properly

aaaaaaaaah boooooooooooooooooooring.........

6:00 AM
@GevorgHindoyan wait what?

@aking1012 boooooooooooring........... nothing to do

when i right click on a folder in another partition, the Ubuntu One options are grayed out except for Show Ribbon something

fix a problem with ubuntu...that's always time consuming. for instance earlier today i found a working link for the source to the doom3 engine since the old id ftp/torrent is down
@msPeachy i'll see if i can replicate it. what root-level dir are you trying in?

did here anyone registered in dropbox?

e.g. /opt

6:02 AM
IF no
please tell me your email

@GevorgHindoyan i use sendspace
and you could find my email if you did even marginal digging

it's a directory inside an ext4 logical partition

@aking1012 no dropbox is cooler

sure, but sendspace is what i use
@msPeachy okay i'll just test it with opt

okay

6:04 AM
@aking1012 for example can you get more space in sendspace via calling your friend to use dropbox?

sendspace isn't space limited
so you don't have to do that :/

Night all.

@aking1012 hm....

have a better one @GeorgeEdison - if you need someone to do a x64 build on pro lmk. i may be able to do that for you. i'm on g+

@GeorgeEdison night, but for me morning

6:06 AM
@GevorgHindoyan looks like avatar

yes, sendspace is the bees knees. and it's the android logo

www.dropbox.com

coincidentally it's "Andy the Android" which is also my name :)

ok
is here anyone who want to register in dropbox
i need space

@msPeachy it appears you can't. you also can't just softlink a directory in ~/ to something in opt

6:15 AM
who want to play red eclipse?

status set to: by design
@GevorgHindoyan another cube engine game? it looks too quake-ey to me. i think we need more modern engine stuff

Guess I'll have to move it /home dir then

if you need it to be another place, depending on the situation, you might be able to move it and ln -s in the other direction

if i stopped syncing and delete the previously synced folder, would Ubuntu One keep a copy of the uploaded files?
@aking1012 as long as it's in the / path?

no idea. i'm not generally a fan of cloud sync. it's only installed b/c i was working on an app that needed it

6:19 AM
@GevorgHindoyan yes

heya....

Sorry for late response

its one of those appear disappear thingys, BBL

now you see, now you don't

@AnwarShah what yes?

6:20 AM
@Mahesh heh. i've come to expect that Mahesh

@GevorgHindoyan off-topic.

@aking1012 If you didn't, that'd be a surprise..

i wonder if espeak is in the liveCD

@aking1012 why? why espeak?
there is something else
but i can't remember
its name

6:25 AM
it's a default install TTS program.
it used to be festival, now it's espeak
i find this mildly upsetting since cepstral et al catered to festival as an abstraction layer for cooler voices, but oh well. there's still their swift binary
@GevorgHindoyan btw i like the wallrunnnig in red-eclipse, but it still feels quake-y and the lack of fall realism turns me off

@aking1012 wall waking is double space?

how to walk on walls
@aking1012 ?

idk, haven't played it. saw it in the video
if there were a perk/power-up it might be okay, but it still looks like quake to me. it's not distinctive enough to make me want to play it

ive heared about leghack(somthing like that?) but can't find it

6:36 AM
like the icarus perk in DE...it's in their demo video

@aking1012 im sure when you start playing you can't stop

no. i like relatively distinctive games
clones are good to get it off the ground (copy artwork/maps) to get an initial following, but you need something else to make it its own

ok guys, i must go work

izx
@AnwarShah I know that ia32-libs is available in every recent (since 10.04 at least) Ubuntu release, and the only way it gives you that no-candidate error if you try to install via apt-get is if (a) you're on 32-bit (b) you're on 64-bit and you either never updated your repos

I just copied a folder then manually changed each entry to match the security of the original... Is there a cp switch that copies the security as well? (I used cp -R /folder /new-folder)
sorry... my command kept the correct chmod permissions... looking for one that keeps the correct groups

i believe -P does that (preserve)

Thanks

if that doesn't there's a way to pipe tar
and no problem
the latter is reserved for across network copies without actually saving the tar file

I noticed that D2 worked better under wine than under Win7 xD

idk. never did play it.

10:44 AM
in budget?!
well, you can get it for like 10$ right now...

coffee is hardly in my budget atm

and I only play with friends on LAN...
@aking1012 hehe, I have a coffee budget :P
around 30€ / month :P

i brew it myself at home. if i need it somewhere i bring a thermos or a gallon jug

Q: /var/log/kernel filled with errors

TimZEII am using 12.04. It's only been installed for a few weeks, and the computer is new too. Yet my 100 GB partition is already full, though nothing is installed, no videos, no images, nothing that would account for 100GB anyway. One of the problems seems to be coming from /var/log/kernel.log, which...

you are not that OP ... the Q was only filed a couple of hours ago. Stuff like this can take a few days to get an answer. I presume you have tried an older/newer kernel?

@msPeachy np

bob
@fossfreedom why would I try that, that's not my kind of area, I'm just an end user that would like my system to work instead of using my whole disk.

@bob I make a habit out of taking fossfreedom's advice

bob
11:55 AM
I mean I don't want to start testing all kernels until I find a solution, that may or may not solve my issue just because I don't see the symptoms anymore
I would like a real solution rather than getting around it, not knowing if the issue is still there or not
if that makes sense...
and also, I'm too much of a newbie to do things like that
I just want to use my computer, not mess with its internals

@bob in essence to me it seems: then you sort of tried newer kernels through updates...which was his recommendation

@bob there's no harm in trying out kernels

bob
@aking1012 well yeah I did do updates when asked to do them
but I don't know if just doing updates does update kernels too

depending on how you do it, it can

bob
@msPeachy that's just my point I don't want to "try", I want to "solve"

11:57 AM
then it's normal. a bug was fixed. moving along...

bob
I have 12.04, that's supposed to be a recent kernel, but I can install a new one if that will fix my problem ?

sudo apt-get update --updates repos
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade --upgrades kernel
...that's what I think

bob
are you sure this will fix my issue ?

this one smells like a bug - probably should file a new launchpad report. In the interim we can suggest - newer/older kernels - or just dont use an encrypted home partition. Alternatively - set up a regular cron job that rolls the logs around and deletes.

you just said your problem was solved through updates. you could install future kernels (through ppas) but if you're asking why do i have to do this, don't do it
for example i know quantal kernels are available via ppa for precise

bob
11:59 AM
no I didn't say it was solved through updates, you misunderstood, sorry for not speaking clearly
what lead you to think that ?
my issue is still present, and I don't know how to solve it.

"because I don't see the symptoms anymore"
@bob here

bob
@aking1012 I'm not english native, maybe the verb is not in the correct form.

@fossfreedom ultimately that @bob
sorry, i generally do a decent job of understanding non-native speakers, but if i don't follow the chain of events there is little i can do...and i do suspect it's a bug as foss suggested

bob
@aking1012 What I meant was that I don't want to start testing all kernels until I find a solution, because I don't know if any version of a kernel will or will not solve my issue. AND (assuming I did try all these kernels versions, which I have no intention of, giving my level, the time it would take, and given that I don't know in advance if it will even work) I would have no way of knowing if it just solved the issue or if the issue is still there but just harder to see because some of the symptoms disappeared.

it sounds more like complaining about an update that hasn't been applied yet now. i understand what you said exactly, but i'm commenting on the implication of the statement and how it would make oss people feel
i just want it to work for me is not the oss way. i just want it to work for everyone is. just my opinion.

bob
12:06 PM
bottom line, what do I do ?

they already told you. file a bug or try edge kernels. i would recommend filing a bug

bob
a bug has been filled 3 years ago
I don't plan to wait 3 more years until it is solved

@bob - are you the same as TimZei - why have you got two accounts?

12:09 PM
@fossfreedom good call

bob
@fossfreedom because a stupid rule says you can't talk here without 20 reputation or something like that

that aside, if it's mission critical i would bounty it on gun.io ... someone will fix it for money surely
@bob request an account merge. or are you saying you're speaking through someone else's account

bob
@aking1012 whatever that's not the issue.

i know at least one other person was affected by that bug @jrg iirc
@bob i think it's part of it. when you make foss ask something it is part of an issue

bob
so what can I do to make it stop filling my system partition ?

12:15 PM
i think i've said what i have to say on this one. you seem to have some really corner case issues. i went to the trouble of setting up clean VMs to troubleshoot your VNC/RDP one and you swear it doesn't work which speaks to incomplete details. you can't ask question withholding data and expect other people to solve them for you. reference:

@fossfreedom no thanks I'll keep it the way it is, can we please stop talking about this and go back to my technical problem ?

@bob if its a bug - not alot we can do here on askubuntu. File a new report. I've given you a few options above. If you dont feel comfortable trying them - just star the question - maybe an answer or two will appear in the next few days that you can then try out.

@fossfreedom Why was the flag marked as helpful? The question was valid...

you were trying to be helpful no?
i would say it was marked appropriately
