Is there some magic spell I can invoke to punish people who change their question after 4 answers have been posted to something different?

Q: Selecting elements from a list one by one

DanielI have an list l = {{4,5},{7,8},{9,5},{3,2},{1,2},{13,12}}. I want to take the elements in the list in the sequential order. For eg first number in the list is {4,5} and I want to select the first member in the sub-list , that is 4 and i want to add it with a random number between 1 and 10.t...

9:36 AM
@acl When was that question last edited? According to the time stamp the OP removed the "adding a random number" bit 18 hours ago but all answers referring to that part of the original question are posted later.
This sounds like a cushy job: "SENIOR CAE ENGINEER M/F SEAT COMFORT"

acl
@Heike well, all except mine :) (I admit I thought the others had also answered before the change)
@Heike (no actually he added the random number thing). anyway not a big deal

@acl Oh, I misinterpreted the colour coding on the revisions page.

I see that no one has voted for this request; is it an unpopular idea?

Q: Formatting support for \[LeftDoubleBracket] and \[RightDoubleBracket]

Mr.WizardIt has become common practice on Mathematica.SE to us the Unicode characters for a number of Mathematica symbols. @MrWizard I wouldn't support changes to MMA.SE on account of this. AFAICT, it's basically Mathematica's bug for recognising the CJK block symbols correctly but not the math block ones. Instead I would suggest editing your UnicodeFontMapping.tr so that U+27E6 and U+27E7 are recognised correctly as \[LeftDoubleBracket] and \[RightDoubleBracket].

12:08 PM
@OleksandrR Unfortunately that would only fix it for me or anyone else making that modification. Further, while it would be great if this problem were corrected in Version 9 it will not provide backward compatibility, so the problem will remain. As I see it only a fix of the kind I described will allow both proper formatting and copy&paste for all users.

@MrWizard It's funny you mention vertical alignment in that question. On my system the line with U+301A and U+301B is much nicer aligned on my system than the one with U+27E6 and U+27E7.

@MrWizard I agree with your assessment, but unfortunately the fact is that CJK symbols should never have been used as mathematical operators in the first place. If we can't fix this mistake at the source, I think we have to just live with it--I certainly wouldn't advocate propagating this bug elsewhere.

@Heike I guess it must be font-dependent. Perhaps it is simply not practical to use these symbols here. That is a shame, really, and their use greatly improves the legibility of some code.
@OleksandrR "I certainly wouldn't advocate propagating this bug elsewhere." -- do you see my proposed fix as doing this, and if so, how?

12:25 PM
@MrWizard well, at the very least it would make the spacing of CJK characters wrong on StackExchange sites (unless the SE people could make it specific to our site, and even then, we have some users with CJK usernames). As for characters displaying differently than they're copied, I think we are simply spoiled with Mathematica--there is no InterpretationBox here, so probably it has to be fixed using javascripts that would intercept the "copy" operation from the browser
and then regex the characters into the right forms. I suspect this would be rather brittle.

Okay, let me ask this: how horrendous ;-) is the appearance of the CJK brackets? Would their use improve legibility even with the extraneous spacing?

@MrWizard IMO, yes. The inconsistent alignment is not that much of a problem to me.

@MrWizard How do you get Mathematica to copy double brackets as [LeftDoubleBracket] and [RightDoubleBracket] anyway?

@Heike Until WRI includes the feature or someone posts a better method, this:
1
A: How to "Copy as Unicode" from a Notebook?

Mr.WizardSince a native method is not forthcoming, I shall post my file based circumvention, for Windows. You will need to have this utility in the command path (it apparently is stock with Windows 7). copyUnicode[expr_] := Run["clip <", Export["$Clipboard.temp", ToString[expr, InputForm], ...

Would each of you take a screen capture of my Meta post and show me what the CJK characters look like on your system?

@MrWizard Oh, ok.

12:33 PM
I really hope someone will add "Copy as Unicode" -- it's desperately needed.

Thanks. yes, the top one looks pretty decent there.

@MrWizard What does it look like on your screen?

basically like that but with the brackets offset vertically much as the lower line in yours, except the other direction. Do you want a cap?

@MrWizard No that's not necessary.

12:37 PM
Not selected, and selected. Apparently I have some font issues.

@OleksandrR that's about what I see too.

Okay. I don't find it too problematic, personally. Anyway, I must go now. Bye!

Bye Oleksandr!

How about yourself?

I had a tough week
but now I'm chilling
and about to save as->tetris.nb, and get started playing around
So great :)

That game can be addictive; combined with Mathematica programming it could be down right hazardous.

I'll let you know if I end up not leaving the house all week

@MrWizard Thanks @MrWizard
I had to look up what wb means. I assumed it didn't stand for white balance.

Hi there. Regarding the "moving target" question...
It seemed clear to me that the OP asked an (overly) easy question, and had it plainly answered, then followed up with an "and now..." edit.
Given acl's comment assume he read it the same way.
Perhaps my action was out of line. I'm here to listen.

Ok, I'm on my ipad, so I can't see the timestamp. I didn't see a comment by acl, just your edit summary

In tetris are you normally allowed to save a game in the middle of a level?

@MrWizard I think the question shouldn't have been rolled back. The question was changed slightly more than an hour after being posted and 5 out of 6 answers were posted after the OP changed the question.
@Rojo Can you save a tetris game at all?

@Heike if you edit it the the "Random" version I will not contest it.

@Heike, don't know :)
@Heike, you shouldn't, right? Otherwise it's cheating

Okay, I'm out of here. Catch you all later.

2:45 PM
Yeah, no saving
Bye sparta

Bye @MrWizard
@Rojo I once wrote a game on my MSX computer where the goal was to dodge falling objects as long as possible. My sister cheated by pressing the pause key. The game would pause but the time would continue running. Years later I got back at her by editing minesweeper.ini and putting my name first.

Hahaha
@Heike, I stopped playing minesweeper when I saw that that could be done

@Rojo I gave up before that. My sister was too fast anyway. I don't think she ever found out that I edited the file.

@Heike so you suggest no pause either in tetris?

@Rojo I think normally you can pause a tetris game, although normally the board is hidden while the game is paused ASAIK.
I have to go now. I need to do some shopping.

2:55 PM
You convinced me

good luck with your game.

Thanks

How long should blog posts be approximately
?

Not more than 10^6 pages

Can pages be A0 size?

of course

Then I'm good :)

@Rojo What are you writing about?

4:47 PM
I just started playing around with the tetris game

Hi there

Hey @IstvánZachar

@Rojo I have a game-related question, but I'm not sure whether I should ask it or not, as it might turn out to be a "can you make it faster?"-type question.

Tell me
I'm interested even if I can't help

Though speed is pretty much important in scrolling games.
And it seems like that soon there will be a steady trickling of game-related questions

5:00 PM
@Rojo from what I understand, the Tetris copyright holder is quite litigious. So, it might be better to call this game "Rui Rojo's super fun block party" or something like that. And if you can incorporate game elements never included in any Tetris game so far, so much the better.

@OleksandrR, oh, ok
I was calling it tetris as an abbreviation

The problem is that I have a complex piece of gui, that is something of a scrolling platformer, but I have to improve its speed. Everything is working, so no direct question is possible on a specific coding problem, but I definitely have to speed it up

On the record, it's actually called tetris897239584729ujsdlflsdvfmgsemjl

so, are such performance-improvement questions welcomed, or not?

@IstvánZachar But how can anyone know what would help you then?

5:02 PM
@Rojo Maybe Mathris? And you have to fit in 2D typeset expressions instead of blocks...

Haha

@IstvánZachar IMO, yes. At least, I would be interested to hear about how to speed things like that up, and I think it would be of general use to others.

I agree

@Rojo I can post the code, and anyone can improve it. I actually expect some neat dynamic optimization tricks. But since I don't know what causes the cumulated lag, I hardly can point to a specific problem.

Well

5:05 PM
@IstvánZachar "How can I effectively performance-profile Dynamics?" sounds like a good question in itself.

That's a nice one :D
Really

Sounds very Mma.SE-official, thanks! I'm going to post it then
Thanks for the discussion : )

I'll try to get over my big-chunks-of-code-fear and take a loot at it when you post it

It will be neatly organized and commented : )
Also, you have any idea what software I can use to make screencasts in video or animated gif format? (latter preferred as those can be uploaded to SE)

5:26 PM
@IstvánZachar well, no, not really (I don't have any idea). I haven't used it but I suppose you can try this. After that you'll need to convert the resulting video to a GIF, for which this appears to be a possibility.
(Alright, those were ideas. But I don't make any claims as to whether they are good ones or not.)
@Rojo I decided against posting another answer here in the end as I thought what I would have posted would be too similar to Rob Sewell's existing answer. However, I'll be glad to send you an example of what I did if you'd find it useful for whatever you have to fit.

5:58 PM
@OleksandrR thanks! I'll let you know then when I'm on it! :)

6:12 PM
A quick and tricky one: What does it mean Symbolic Manipulation?

@belisarius Is it a tag?
@OleksandrR Thank you, will give them a go.

@IstvánZachar Nope. From Mma help:
> Integer mathematical function, suitable for both symbolic and numerical manipulation.
What does it mean?

I guess manipulation is nothing more than a cover-all word for integration, derivation, etc.

@IstvánZachar That was what I thought. But it seems wrong

...in contrast to, for example, Fourier

6:15 PM
try this:

I'm guessing it means it remains unevaluated when the argument is not symbolic, and probably has some built in transformation rules for simplifying or who knows what else

All functions are "symbolically manipulable"
f = {IntegerPart, FractionalPart, Ceiling, Floor, Round, PrimePi,
NextPrime};
GraphicsGrid[
Partition[
Plot[{#[u], D[Evaluate@#[x], x] /. x -> u}, {u, 0, 3},
PlotLabel ->
Style[Framed[#], 16, Blue, Background -> Lighter[Yellow]]] & /@
f, 2], Frame -> All]

and/or probably that you can request arbitrary precision
Emphases on "probably"

@belisarius could mean anything at all. After all, IntegerPart is supposedly suitable for symbolic manipulation, yet its derivative isn't very meaningful. I think you essentially have to try it and see.

@OleksandrR yep. I posted a question some time ago
@OleksandrR But all those functions have the same stigma

6:18 PM
@belisarius "does essentially..." "effectively the same as..." "in practice..." "usually..." -- all are mysterious and frightening terms when they appear in the Mma docs.

So I think I am misunderstanding the "symbolilic manipulation" meaning

Haha

@OleksandrR But "symbolic manipulation" should have a precise meaning ... I guess
Is it related to the ability to derivate and integrate, or not?

@belisarius one would hope so, but if it isn't defined anywhere, then I would be inclined to take it as meaning "well, we think it's been given a complete mathematical specification, but we might have missed something somewhere". Sometimes I wonder if I'm too cynical for my own good, but you would think that differentiation and integration are fairly fundamental operations that should have been considered.

@OleksandrR What bothers me is that all that functions behave almost identically. And usually Reduce[] fails miserably trying to solve equations when they are involved
Try Reduce[IntegerPart@x == x, x, Reals]
>So I think I am misunderstanding the "symbolic manipulation" meaning

6:29 PM
@belisarius HeavisideTheta explicitly says "HeavisideTheta can be used in integrals, integral transforms and differential equations" on its doc page. So maybe this symbolic manipulation does only refer to a rather narrow range of possible operations or a specific family of properties.

@OleksandrR I found something similar in UnitBox

Searching for "suitable for both symbolic and numerical manipulation" in the docs turns up a huge number of functions that seem to bear no obvious relationship to one another, so whatever it means, it must indicate rather basic functionality.

It is really unpleasant to fail in getting the meaning of such a widely used term
By Googling it I get a lot of references to SW work
but no definitions

I wonder if the only way to find out for sure is to file a Premier Support request asking for its meaning?
Or, perhaps to post a question and see if someone with some responsibility for some of these functions or their docs will answer.

@OleksandrR I was thinking about posting a question ... but seems such a basic thing!

6:40 PM
@IstvánZachar, reading your code
...slowly
It's nicely commented, you're right about that

@belisarius it does, but so many basic things are not well specified in Mathematica. For example, the tolerance that Equal or SameQ apply to decide whether numbers are equal. This is barely mentioned in the docs and how to change it is undocumented. So, if there is something that's unclear, even if it seems basic, I think a question is the right approach. Clearly none of us know what it means and we're not exactly n00bs.

@OleksandrR Ok. Agree. Going to post.

@IstvánZachar, it's a fun app! I still don't understand it, but it's fun :D
Ok, I got it now, but still playing

@Rojo Deleted my comment. Yours is hanging lose now

6:53 PM
@Rojo I've tested ~100 people with the full version so far, only half of them enjoyed the "music"... :)
And I am eagerly waiting for your Tetris game!

@IstvánZachar, I don't think the code I posted in my answer works quite corrctly. It's reporting some weird things. I'll delete it for the moment...
I found the bug

@Rojo Amazing that you immediately draw out a dynamic profiler from your trickbag :)

7:10 PM
@IstvánZachar
Care to explain a couple of things of the code
:)
?
That last Dynamic@Show is clearly the heavy part. From what I see in the graphics, the only thing really necessary to be dynamically updated is that yellow triangle position and orientation, the gray line it leaves behind and the plot range. That's when the code will be the most efficient

7:29 PM
No word from @Jin for a couple of weeks now. I wonder how the site design's coming along?

@OleksandrR Posted

@Rojo Sure, sorry, I was in the kitchen. Yes, you're right, but practically these are the things that are updated.

@IstvánZachar, the whole Show is updated almost constantly
and that includes the Plots

Oh, yes, you're right.
But since the PlotRange must be updated, I guess I have to update the whole Show

7:45 PM
@IstvánZachar no
You can do PlotRange->Dynamic

Q: Importing a 32 bit tiff

s0rceIt appears the tiff was somehow broken, opening it and then re-saving it with no changes in ImageJ renders it importable in Mathematica. see: ImageAdjust@Import["https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3730003/n2039_01_0001resaved.tif"] Thanks everyone! The Mathematica documentation (at least for v7 and v8...

The picture is an unusual format (32 bit graylevel), but the documentation claims mma can read it. A question about that claim' s validity seems valid to me.

@SjoerdCdeVries I thought the closure was because several users said that the file was corrupted, thus not making it mma's fault. If you think otherwise and that this really is an issue with mma, I'll vote to reopen
I don't know much about the topic to judge where the issue lies
