@BobCross - Another idea I have is something supplemental to Q&A.
Whenever I do a search for something for my car, I end up getting just overwhelmed with all kinds of search noise.
For instance, I've been trying to find a seat track for my 68 thunderbird, I come up with results for a Ford Truck seat track, or a 2005 drivers seat for a tahoe. Or some question on a forum that's just loosely related to my problem.
In programming, when I search for something, I find a definitive answer or research on the topic immediately, but not with the cars.
But, if I could easily see that 1967-1979 Ford Thunderbirds, Galaxies, Faclons, Lincoln Continentals, all have the same part, that can make it easier for me to locate a new one.
So suppose Mechanics SE was also linked to such a database? not only could you ask your repair or maintenance questions, but you could then go cross reference your parts.
I might be out to lunch on this idea, but I wanted to drop this here and see if the seed could be nurtured into an even better idea somehow ;)

@jmort253 yeah, parts search for cars is pretty horrible

Q: How to determine if a Mercedes key is original?

AlexI have made a duplicate of my car key ( 2001 E320) and I want to know if the key (reprogrammed used key) is original. I didn't order one from the company, because it will take time to receive it. And I want to know if this is legal and if the company sells new programmable keys. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question if he would ask it directly, but I'm not sure what he's asking about...

@BenBrocka - Yeh that is a little vague...

@BobCross have two new questions, courtesy of moi. Hopefully some other Mercedes owners will be al ittle less confused after reading those

It doesn't seem like he stuck around to see your comments though.
Because the question can definitely be salvaged.

Q: Can I reprogram a used Mercedes smart key?

Ben BrockaI want a new key for my Mercedes Benz and I've heard that you can get a used smart key for much cheaper than a new one from a licensed Mercedes mechanic. Can I reuse an already programmed Mercedes smart key fob? I've heard a Mercedes can be programmed to accept a new key, doesn't that mean a u...

if he edits.

I decided to write my own questions :P
I THINK he's asking what I asked above...
if by "original" he means unused...

Right... hard to tell
in his question.
Didn't know that about benz keys though.
My brother has an 86
and all my vehicles are more than 20 years old.

The "used smart key" is a common trap so I'm pretty sure that's what he's talking about. But "duplicates" don't matter...it only matters that pairs with your car
@jmort253 they started doing it in the 90s, earlier would have been a plain key I think...mine's a 2006, mom's is a 2001

makes losing a key a lot more pricey ;)
gotta run, work calls ttyl

@jmort253 Oh yeah, $200 for a new set
Bye
