Looking at the OP's last comment, the following question is about rules in the running text -- and may be closed as a duplicate:

Q: Latex \hline spacing warning

9:48 AM
Yay weekend!

@PauloCereda You are right

I created a browser search bar entry which allows you to enter a CTAN package name and then opens the package page, i.e. http://www.ctan.org/pkg/<name>: scharrer-online.de/chrome/site/opensearch/index.htm
3

@MartinScharrer How did you do this?

10:06 AM
@MarcoDaniel I wrote an OpenSearch XML document (opensearch.org/Specifications/OpenSearch/1.1) for it. This is the normal format which is used by website to tell browsers about search fields.
Here it is simply http://www.ctan.org/pkg/{searchTerms}, i.e. it works even if the website doesn't implement any search database etc.
I now added a second entry for the catalogue pages (http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/<name>.html)

10:41 AM
Now with CTAN search options (all combinations).

@MartinScharrer Will you publish the scipts?

@MarcoDaniel Technically they are published. Check the source code of the HTML file for the URLs of the XML files.
But I can provide them as ZIP file as well.

@MartinScharrer Great. I think it's really helpful.

@MarcoDaniel Added a ZIP file for download.

Will the OP ever learn the concept of "providing information"?

Q: centering description vertically

UiyI have a description environment and would like to center the descriptions vertically w.r.t respect to the items(which are images). \begin{description} \item[\pict1] - Description \end{description} \pict1 is rather large compared to the height of the description text. As it is, it is put ...

At least he/she has been polite.

10:57 AM
@egreg Mmm, the constant reference to CSS also worries me. It should be clear by now that LaTeX doesn't work like that.

@MartinScharrer At least not the description environment. If you divide the input into two blocks (label and description text) it's fairly easy to line up them.

@egreg Indeed

Someone should define a hyphenation pattern for these words!

@egreg New question by our friend

@MartinScharrer Rha-bar-ber-bar-ba-rabar-bar-ba-ren-bart-bar-bier is almost correct

Aaah crap. I think something broke due to a texlive update. I'm getting loads of errors from thmtools

I'm guessing an update to oberdiek caused it
Yup. tlmgr restore oberdiek 22180 fixed it. Definitely the latest oberdiek that's broken

12:00 PM
@kahen Ca you provide an MWE that shows the problem? I think you should write a small bug-report.

Working on it. I'll have to reinstall the broken version. It takes a while... oberdiek is pretty big

@MarcoDaniel And a bad one, indeed.

@egreg Yeah, here he could really post a full MWE

@egreg Hi!
Hello all of you!

12:43 PM
@KannappanSampath Hi!

I would like to ask a small question about how is the community blog run.

@KannappanSampath Fire up, but I'm afraid that at the moment the people in charge of it are not online. Maybe @StefanKottwitz can tell you something.

Basically, from going through the blog, I see that the frequency of posts is as much as 3 a month. So, how are posts for the blog mobilised from the community? Do you write meta post calling for posts for the blog?
And, also, how many of the members of the community are regularly involved with the blog?
@egreg and @Stephen
[FWIW, we would like to experiment with blog on MSE.]

@KannappanSampath I'm not involved. Look at the post authors.

Stephen, Paul, Joseph Wright seem to be involved. But, only one of them are around!

user19161
1:01 PM
@kahen Well, it will probably be fixed in a few days, then you can use the latest version again!

the
Hello @Jasper

user19161
@KannappanSampath Hi!

user19161
@KannappanSampath What is "the"?

the latest version! :)

user19161
@KannappanSampath is

1:03 PM
Gee! Too late to correct! :)

user19161
Haha.

user19161
@KannappanSampath The ELU blog does not have that much life either.

user19161
I guess TeXnicians/TeXperts are avid bloggers!

No, I did not look. But, TeX blog is quite active IMO.
(On this note: Did you read the meta post of mine about blog for MSE?)

user19161
@KannappanSampath Let me read now.

1:06 PM
Sure, please let me know what you think!

user19161
@KannappanSampath Well, firstly I am nobody, so my opinion does not really matter. OK, what I think is, well of course having a blog means you can write things which are not suitable for the main site, so it is always a good idea. But whether the blog will have lasting value depends on the quality and relevance of the posts, and this can only be determined in the long run.

user19161
So overall, I am quite neutral about this whole SE blog idea.

If only I was everybody and my proposals mattered the most
@JasperLoy Thank you for letting me know your stance. Can you also Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V this to a comment there, Thank you for taking time.

user19161
Also for people who love to blog about their pet topic, they might want to do it on their own blogs. For example, I know you have one!

Yes, :) I update it less often!

user19161
1:13 PM
I also had one but I deleted it!

user19161
I revealed some of my secrets there!

user19161
@KannappanSampath Done. No need to be so polite.

You never know when people will tell you: "You're a rowdy" and you know what I mean. @Jasper

user19161
@KannappanSampath Well, I am the type who does not mind people saying the f word. However I care if I think people are hurting others' feelings intentionally.

user19161
1:16 PM
I think in this world, people care too much about superficial things and too little about things which really matter.

@Jasper, This is the reason why I never come to MSE chat room these days.
@JasperLoy I would not like to, but I don't know if I am.

user19161
But I also think people should not flag for mod attention to resolve disputes with other chat users. They should talk it out if they want.

But, I did not flag--or did I?

user19161
Of course, if one has already given up on another person, then just ignore him.

user19161
@KannappanSampath Oh I am not talking about you, just making a general remark.

user19161
1:20 PM
I see a mixedmath and a chessmath both running for mod!

Yes! :)

user19161
For a moment I thought you would run for mod too.

Huh. latexmk removed from the default tools in TeXworks 0.4.4. I wonder why. I use emacs + auctex myself, so it's not like it matters to me personally. I'm just curious.

user19161
@kahen Yes I am on Ubuntu 12.04 and just installed TeXworks and realized it was gone!

@JasperLoy No, definitely not. I think: A mod for MSE should be atleast as knowledgable as the present ones. I am not.

user19161
1:25 PM
I suspect it is because they don't want to confuse new users with a latexmk.

user19161
And in my experiments, latexmk does not work with auto-pst-pdf and pstricks together for pdflatex output.

user19161
I think only an expert will know why.

user19161
Some hacking might make it work.

user19161
@kahen I am not on Windows, but I think MiKTeX has its own texify instead of latexmk in its TeXworks.

user19161
The other possible reason why latexmk is removed is because it needs some perl to work, and novices might not have installed it on their system.

1:38 PM
A small perl system is packaged with the TeX distributions that use it
At least on windows. On *n?x it might use the system one because perl's always there, right? :)

user19161
I think TL comes with perl, but the last time I used MiKTeX it had no perl I think.

user19161
@kahen Ah yes, all major distros come with perl in a default install. However, one needs the perl-tk library additionally to run the TL installer or tlmgr in GUI mode.

Hi Paul.

user19161
So Paul is the English version of Paulo!

1:42 PM
ohai!
@Kannappan: 'ello! :)

May I ask you a TeX.SX blog-related question?

Sure! :)

So, once a blog entry is posted, can other users suggest edits to it?

All the blog authors are easily reached through this chatroom. :) So I'd say suggestions, improvements, corrections and even criticism are welcome. :) (English fail again)

Oh, OK.
So, someone can suggest an addition only through the chat room?

1:49 PM
I think a question in meta might also be ok, but we need to check it with our moderators. :)
And one could also recruit [him|her]self as a blog author. :)

I see. OK. Can you please elaborate on how that system of recruitment works?

@KannappanSampath Ah, I got it. :)
Let me provide some background of our blog then. :)
It all started here:
16
Q: How about a TeX.SX blog?

SeamusA recent StackOverflow blog post announced the lauch of blogoverflow: stackexchange community blogs. Do we think the TeX community wants one? I know several members already have their own blogs (Joseph Wright, Stefan Kottwitz, myself and frabjous contribute to one...) but would a community one b...

@PauloCereda Will be most welcome!
Thanks for the link. It certainly is a must read!

We had a list of possible contributors to the blog, then our mods created a chatroom for discussing possible articles. :)
8
Q: How can I contribute to the TeX.sx Blog?

Brent.LongboroughThe title says it (almost) all. If and when I think I have something useful to say on the blog, as a post, rather than a comment, how will I go about it? Is there a moderation process, and how do I provide input?

@PauloCereda OK. I think that would be a second or third phase of the whole process, \me thinks.
But, you people are avid bloggers, I must say. :D

1:58 PM
@KannappanSampath So do I. :) Maybe the first step is to recruit contributors. :)
@KannappanSampath Nah, we are more like spammers. :P

Heh! :)

But it's very nice to have a community blog. :) And I'm sure there is a good use for it. :)

@PauloCereda Yes, definitely. I understand that. Two concerns have been raised (on that meta post.):
1. Who will maintain the blog in the long run?
2. Can users edit posts like they do at the main site?
For (1), I think, as long as we can have 5 to 6 contrributors at any time of the year, the blog would be a robust one, I think. No?

I believe so. :)

But, for (2) I don't know as yet.

2:03 PM
I think if there's a recruitment post, it might get users' attention. :)
(2) is tricky. :(

@PauloCereda As for a recruitment post, I think, I'll let the community come to a consensus about this before starting one.

I'd love to see SE integrating the sites with their blogs, so changes could be made, but always under a peer review system (as we have in the main sites).

As of now, this (having a blog) idea is welcome, I think, but I am unsure about that.
@PauloCereda Precisely. But, it would be hard I think. There is a lot of technicalities involved as far as I see, but its just my opinion.
@Paulo Shall I be back after my dinner? I basically have a few more questions.

@KannappanSampath Yes. :( There's a lot of room for improvement, but I'm afraid those features are far from happening (we have quite a few styling issues which had been reported for months without a proper solution).
@KannappanSampath Sure! I'll be here all afternoon (11:10am now here).
Joseph and other blog authors might also help. :)

@PauloCereda Nice. I'll be back in an hour for sure. (Since I stay in a hostel, I am supposed to be there for the dinner at the right time or I miss it. So, hope you don't mind my going mid-way.)

2:12 PM
@KannappanSampath :)

2:37 PM
Back! @Paulo

@KannappanSampath Welcome back! :)

So, the questions are:
1. Assuming the community consensus is that, we are going to want a blog, the next step would be to recruit contributors, am I right?

I think so. :) You might get in touch with Rebecca Chernoff, I think she's in charge of the blog stuff. :)

Oh, OK. Then, I'll contact her about that. The last question, then, would be: how is the interface for the blog like?

You mean, the layout? :)
Yay, @Stefan is here!

2:44 PM
@PauloCereda Just tested your sprite demo, and noticed including the image several times doesn't bloat the output size much

@StefanKottwitz Really? Thanks, I had no idea on how to measure it. :(

@PauloCereda Yes, for instance, is TeX supported on the blog? And, assuming I am a recruited contributor, and I have an article, how would I go about posting it for instance? Any special formatting ruled to observe?

Just call it 10 times with adjustbox and compare with the file size of a once calling file

@KannappanSampath The layout will be probably the same of the main site. :) And TeX formatting/syntax... well, it's one of the issues I've mentioned before. We have the "normal" Wordpress workflow. I was hoping to use Markdown as we use in the main site. :(
@StefanKottwitz Ah!

@KannappanSampath Do you want to setup a TeX blog or a Math blog?

2:47 PM
@StefanKottwitz Math blog for the community! (But, I do have a Math blog, which I am reluctant to update for mark up problems I face with TeX!)
@PauloCereda Hmmm, I'll get in touch with Rebecca about this, when I have an opportunity to discuss. Thank you for your time, Paulo!

@KannappanSampath I'm glad to help. :)
Feel free to ask us more questions. :)

Sure, will do!

3:22 PM
BTW, does anyone have their blogs at wordpress?

4:02 PM
@JosephWright: Chelsea or Liverpool? :)

@PauloCereda Wrong Question. Chelsea or Munich

@MarcoDaniel Ah. :)
Munich, I suppose. :)

Why does XeLaTeX suddenly dies with this error:

fatal: memory exhausted (xmalloc of 82027752 bytes).

Wow! :|

@MartinScharrer On what system?

4:15 PM
@Paulo Which is a good place to host a Math blog, if I may ask?

@KannappanSampath I have no idea. :)

:( But, OK, thank you.

@KannappanSampath I think it depends if you want MathJaX enabled or other features. :)
I know the free wordpress can host sites, but without some features.

@PauloCereda I want MathJaX enabled. (The reason why I don't like wordpress is I have to writ $latex ...$ every time I want Math there.)
@PauloCereda Yes. Precisely.

@egreg A8 Vision AMD, 4GB RAM no swap space, Ubuntu 12.04.
My current memory usage and the lack of swap caused it.
I enabled 2GB of swap and now it works again.

4:23 PM
@egreg Joseph is probably watching the FA Cup right now. :)

@PauloCereda I'm not. :)

@KannappanSampath Maybe hosting is a nice option, but it's expensive, I guess. :)

@PauloCereda Right, given I am still an undergraduate student. I also do not know about Google sites.

@egreg I'm hearing the TV for some highlights. :P

@MartinScharrer XeTeX frequently does swapping
We have 324 unanswered questions ATM. Less than last time, IIRC.

4:26 PM
@KannappanSampath Google is quite restricted as far as I know. :(
Goal!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm, then, that option is knocked out of the list. :(

@PauloCereda you mean: \Goal!!!!! - it's a TeX chat ;-)

@PatrickGundlach Oops my bad. :)

user19161
@PauloCereda I don't even know FA cup is on now!

\stepcounter{chelseagoals}. :)
@JasperLoy It is the final. :)
Chelsea 1:0 Liverpool. :)

The op will also accept a tikz answer. However I don't know how. ;-)

Q: Circling/Framing part of one entry in xymatrix

AaronI want to circle ONLY part of an entry in xymatrix, I have skimmed through several references for xypic but only able to find how I can frame the whole entry (e.g. the one in first and third row in the diagram below) and did not mention how I could do it locally. Say in the example below, I want...

leo
hi there. I want to put something like \section{The function $f(x)=x^2$} in a document. The problem is that in the output, the math is not bold. I have tryed \section{The function $\mathbf{f(x)=x^2}$} but that don't produce what I want. What can I do?

@leo If you have math in section titles the best thing, IMO, is not to embolden them. Bold symbols in math do have a meaning by themselves. However, for simple things you can say \protect\mathversion{bold}$f(x)=x^2$. But this will embolden also in the table of contents. :(
So \section[The function $f(x)=x^2$]{The function \protect\mathversion{bold}$f(x)=x^2$} (or \protect\boldmath, which is the same).

leo
@KannappanSampath Thanks
@egreg I see thanks :-)

:) @egreg should be thanked too! :)

4:50 PM
@leo Use amsart for your math papers: the section titles are much less prominent than in article

I use amsart @egreg.

leo
@egreg Thanks for the advice. I'll try it :-)

@KannappanSampath You're a connoisseur. :)

@egreg Unfortunately not. I am learning it slowly. I'll hang out often in this room so that I'll learn from you guys.

I had no idea bold math symbols had a meaning on their own. :(

4:55 PM
@PauloCereda You might recall that R stands for the field of real numbers in some texts...

leo
Sometimes \mathbf{x}=(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n)

I'm bad at math. :(

Shall I tell you guys what is the model for my typography? (I have not succeeded in mocking it fully!)

@PauloCereda There's no a priori relation between x and \mathbf{x}.
@KannappanSampath Please, do.

This One and this one @egreg.

leo
4:59 PM
@egreg In some books bold x,y,z are vectors. It is not universal

@leo Yes, there's no standard, at least for pure math.

Right, no notation is standard: one is more often used than the other. :)

@KannappanSampath They are essentially amsbook or amsart.

But, did you look at the fonts in the first one?

@KannappanSampath What do you think about this one? profs.scienze.univr.it/~gregorio/algebra.pdf

5:02 PM
That is something I cannot reproduce!

@egreg I see. :)

@KannappanSampath It's \usepackage{mathpazo}

leo
That's a problem I think. The notations in math should agree. Why there is no math organization to create a standar?

@egreg Beautiful document!

@egreg Amazing!!!!!!!!!!! Brilliant! I like to write such notes! Just brilliant!

5:04 PM
@PauloCereda It's my personal class, based on classicthesis (but with many modifications)

leo
The standarization is a good thing
in notation

@egreg nice work really!
I only don't like the font, I really got used to CM for maths

@leo Yes, of course. But math is too broad and imposing some meaning on the symbols would make them proliferate without control.

@egreg Would you mind if I ask you to link me to a place where you have the code ?

@KannappanSampath That's my personal class. You can try the suftesi class, which is similar.

5:06 PM
@egreg I wanna go to Italy and watch a lecture. :)

Oh, OK. But, you would have that .cls file or something no?

leo
:-) me too

@KannappanSampath Yes, it's on my machines.
I'm really not satisfied by the code, so I keep it for me. :)

@egreg :( I am highly satisfied with it. I'd be happy if you gave me.

@egreg been there done that

Q: (Fun) Typesetting of phone numbers

EricRTypesetting of phone numbers has been asked before, however, I have a "fun" phone number from google voice, which includes a 404-xxx-2048 (error code, an exponential of two). I'm vaguely considering silly/cute ways to typeset this for my website/resume (only sent to employers who might actually ...

wat?

@KannappanSampath You use [] for matrices and () for vectors?

@KannappanSampath Don't use leqno with centered displays, only with left aligned ones. Never use underlining.

leo
See you all. Have a nice weekend! :-)

@leo bye!

@tohecz Thank you. I'll change it in the source.

5:11 PM
@PauloCereda I would say TL + {do-not-do-this}

@egreg OK. But, then, How will I indicate (highlight) such a thing?

@KannappanSampath In theorem 2.5, the parenthes around the labels a, b and c should be upright.

(damn, how do you make a link to a tag in the chat?)

@KannappanSampath Small caps are sufficient, probably.

@egreg I see. I'll try it out with small caps.

5:13 PM
@egreg I hope you have not seen my thesis!

@tohecz [Text](link)

@KannappanSampath with the nice border as it has in the question preview?

@tohecz I don't understand your question. :(
@egreg How do I make that happen?

i know how to do a general link, but i want a link to a tag page like this tex.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/typography , just nicely printed in the chat. I'm 99% sure it is possible

@tohecz Just put the link in a line of its own. :)
The chat will expand it nicely. :)

5:18 PM
What Paulo said.

Oops.
It's the tag.

No, it doesn't work.

Yes, it should be a question for it to work.

I failed. :P

5:19 PM

This works! [tag:typography]

@egreg YES! now the code... ?

[tag:your-tag-name]. :)

@PauloCereda I assume you meant the FA Cup. I always want the best team to win, so I believe Chelsea at the moment. (My dad is from Liverpool so we've had it on the radio.)

@JosephWright Ah yes. :) Chelsea is winning now. :)

@PauloCereda Football scores do not necessarily reflect the team playing better, I believe

@JosephWright Do they in cricket?

@JosephWright Yes, it's unpredictable. :)

5:22 PM
@egreg Nah! Not at all! :)

@egreg Generally I'd say yes

@PauloCereda It's too difficult to score in soccer football, so it's exposed to this. In sports like basketball or rugby it's more likely that the better team wins.

@egreg Indeed! :)
Goaaaaaaaaaal!

@PauloCereda Chelsea?

@KannappanSampath Yes. :) 2:0.

5:25 PM
@PauloCereda But if the difference between the two is not great, then chance has its influence in the final result

@egreg Ah yes. :)
People refer to Brazil 82 as the best team that ever existed. They didn't win anything. :)

@egreg I added the line \usepackage{mathpazo} and the TeXmaker is like taking so long to compile! It has already spit out 25 lines of error message but it won't stop!
Oh, MikTeX package cannot install this package on-the-fly!

@JosephWright: If you guys come to Brazil, I'll take you all to play football. :)
Goaaaal!
Liverpool! :)

Chelsea 2:1 Liverpool

5:38 PM
Are we all ready for the Answer the Unanswered session later today?

Go Liverpool! (I love penalty shootouts!)
/me raises hand I am I am I am!

@JosephWright gotta have diner now ;)

@tohecz It's okay, it doesn't start until 2100 GMT

@JosephWright I know, its sorta late if you get up at 7.15 (5.15 GMT) on Sunday...

@JosephWright It will be a nice session, as always. :)

5:41 PM
We should make a contest "Who loses his 25 close votes first"

hhh
How can I force a space with "Spa\ss mit Freunden"?

@hhh "Spa\ss{} Fr..."
This is the most correct way

@tohecz Yes, it's also a bit late for me when I'm on summer time

hhh
@tohecz vielen Dank!

I'm not sure, try to copy-paste the letter from some web-page or text processor like ehm..Word...ehm
Or do you have it on your keyboard?

hhh
No, I don't use the german kbd layout

Then try to find it on some German webpage and copy it

@hhh On the Mac (international keyboard) it's Alt-s ß

hhh
5:46 PM
well Spa\ss{} <-- well that is not too hard or?
@egreg good catch, in Dvorak International it is AltGr+s ---> ß

@hhh it is not of course. But it would be nice for you to know that you can use the char directly (for instance in the case you copy some german text

hhh
@tohecz personally I care that iSpell works, trying thinsg with ß...(not working with \ss{} -option)

Newbie question: can every German word with ss be replaced with ß and vice-versa?

hhh
@tohecz iSpell fails with \ss{} and ß, irritating :(

@PauloCereda no: "Masse" and "Maße" are two different things

5:53 PM
@PatrickGundlach Ah thanks. :)

hhh
@PauloCereda and no if you want to get iSpell working... Spass, Spa\ss{} and Spaß are not german words...according to my iSpell ngerman
even Spa\ss fails...

@PauloCereda One problem if you want to use caps you have to do something, because there is no capital ß. You could replace it by SS, SZ or non-existing-but-still-in-unicode-ugly-capital-ß

@hhh try aspell

@PatrickGundlach What's the difference?

@PatrickGundlach just curiosity: how does LaTeX encodings deal with the utf8 "capital ß"?

5:56 PM
@PauloCereda So the second one would be "MASSE" and "MASZE" or "MAẞE"

@tohecz It uses \SS which denotes a character of its own in the T1 encoding (but I really don't know if it's defined)

@tohecz Luckily they don't. It is the worst invention in the recent years
@egreg mass and measure
@egreg the second more precisely: height width and depth are "Maße" of a box for example

@PatrickGundlach Thanks. The online dictionary doesn't distinguish between the two. :(

@PatrickGundlach there are always such stupidities in "pseudo-typography", for the biggest one: 1$^{\text{st}}$
