@John you can garrison a single unit, which improves the city's defense somewhat, but cities can fire arrows at units all on their own

@agent86 did great people count as combat or civilian?

ok, meeting time, bbl
@NickT civilians

@John I heard that you could hide tanks behind archers and not find out there are 500 tanks behind that 1 archer until you attack them lol

Heehee

how did engineers work though; I thought you put them onto the tile then could speed production or whatever

6:02 PM
@NickT If I remember correctlu they can be used to either finish a building, or convert a tile to a production til (+6 prod when worked, or something like that)

@skovacs1 Well, if you want to write up some good comments that do what you're talking about, I'd be happy to use those instead of these
I don't think explanation is bad. I just find it unnecessary in most cases and don't want to waste my time typing it up. With that script and auto-injection of comments, I don't have to think about it.

user15026
@Wipqozn That is rather awesome

I don't have that script. I find that I usually stick to comments closer to what agent86 exampled in their answer and those are more what I was talking about. Nothing too wordy, just tell them what aspect of their question is OT like catalog or shopping recommendations.
@Sterno I'm purely stating my belief that the comments serve a purpose. I don't disagree with Nick T's complaint about it seeming bureaucratic, but I don't have a problem with sounding bureaucratic as that's how I tend to seem anyways.

6:18 PM
Hey guys, just in case you're speculating on a Diablo 3 contest and speculating that if you asked and answered now things wouldn't count for the phat loots. I speculate that if the first speculation was true, then it would still count questions from the beta times. But that's just that, speculation... no promises ;)

Previous contents didn't factor in early questions.

Hmmm I was looking for @Raven >.< Damn. this question is really relevant? following the comments on this answer?

Dead Space 1 is €2.49 for me thus (pinging @juanmanuel because he's got this game wishlisted.)
worth it?

@badp I liked it (and bought it recently at similar price)
there's some pain on the PC as far as mouse sensitivity and vsync, but it's fixable

@IanPugsley VIDEO!

@badp Dead Space is awesome
Played it on PS3 but one of the best survival horror games out there, and actually fun as a shooter as well
DS2 is even better though

DS2 is €10. Maybe in a few years, on a better computer.

@Wipqozn downloading

6:31 PM
@NickT great people in civ5 are pretty much just like great people previously. you can use them to do something immediate (ie, get a free tech) or something longer-term (ie, build an improvement on a tile that gives +X boost to gold/science/production).

@RonanForman vdub is doing that thing where appending videos isn't working right (ended up with 2 hours of final footage, which is way too long)
I think it's got something to do with direct stream copy vs. full processing mode
I don't know why the MC footage always does this, I can get BoI stuff working just fine

@IanPugsley If you want you can send me the raws, or maybe the scaled down files.

@RonanForman I won't be free until like 9-10pm tonight (my time), so I'll start zipping them up now and see how small I can get 'em, maybe it'll be good
uncompressed they're about 750MB

@BenBrocka I read that. I wonder how it's going to work.
And how easy it will be to abuse.

6:44 PM
It'd be awesome if micspammers had to pay extra

Well it already happens in games like minecraft, people who are nice get free stuff given to them by other players, and griefers get no help at all.

@BenBrocka is that the seventh attempt to extrapolate more headlines from the same podcast or actually new things?

> “So, in practice, a really likable person in our community should get DOTA 2 for free, because of past behavior in Team Fortress 2. Now, a real jerk that annoys everyone, they can still play, but a game is full price and they have to pay an extra hundred dollars if they want voice.'"
welcome to 4 days ago :P

How much you want to bet there will be reputation companies popping up as soon as this becomes a viable business model?
"For $20, we'll boost your reputation by telling everyone how nice you are."

@agent86 Well I don't read gaming news often, Mr I-read-stuff

6:49 PM
yeah, it's the seventh attempt to extrapolate more headlines from the same podcast
and that's why I can't really blame @Ben for not reading gaming news often, but I can blame him for reading the wrong gaming news sites.

@BenBrocka it's just standard bridge protocol. you reposted something I already posted, so I earn points by pointing out how behind the times you are.

Techdirt isn't even a gaming news site. Zite just found it for me

@badp Techdirt's not really a gaming news site. It's more to do with the world of technology and how companies abuse copyright and such.

now you should imply heavily that I have no life, and that's how I stay on top of things.

@BenBrocka it's moreso a wrong gaming news site then :P
Ars Technica also isn't a gaming news site but its gaming coverage is kind of better than average.
There's also the low-volume Ars Technica spin-off Penny Arcade Report.
(Those two are what I use.)

6:57 PM
@badp Those are good sites, definitely. I read those, among others. Personally, I like Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

I read ALL THE THINGS but mostly because I get bored at work.
other people just need to work faster already

Looking for an in-depth comparison of Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 (from a game design perspective)? This is pretty comprehensive: us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/3811455085?page=1 Fair warning, it is pretty much universally positive about D3 (although rightly so in my opinion)

@bwarner Does it mention being always online as a good thing?

@fbueckert I think that is actually one topic it didn't cover. Which is surprising, because it attacked most of the other controversies.

uh
"35 Strength would give +35% damage to a barbarian and no damage bonus to all other character classes wearing the same exact item."
So what's the point in having non-primary stats?

@badp The stats give other bonuses, but you only get damage from your primary. For example, strength gives armor bonuses to everyone.
Dexterity gives dodging to everyone, Intelligence gives resistance to everyone.

Q: What type of gaming event would fit the site?

Brett WhiteThe notion that questions about science fiction and fantasy video games should be cultivated on this site was first introduced to me with this comment on the Topic of the Week page. Gilles made this sound like an even better idea by commenting: Gaming is the hot site in the network at the mom...

@James We have a laser for meta?!

You can see the mother ship zapping at the ground.. but meta is firing a different lazer than non-meta :)
@MarkTrapp That kind of makes me chuckle.. I mean they could join our Game On!'s but I am not sure that would actually increase their traffic...

user2334
@James How would Game On tie into SciFi's scope?

10:16 PM
@Mark SciFi games?

@MarkTrapp Just saying they want to throw a gaming event for Sci Fi.. they have a list of games they are discussing in that topic
But I am just not sure that is going to be a way to get more traffic to that site
Maybe they want to tie the next contest together?

user2334
Yeah, I think they were thinking of trying to pull Skyrim vs. MW3-type event, not a weekly event. They have those already IIRC

Assuming it will be about Diablo 3 run the Q/A contest across both sites with similar rewards
Just its rare when people come to the site here with Lore questions
So I am not sure if we can really feed them users who come looking for gameplay questions

user2334
Skyrim had a bunch of lore questions, IIRC

user2334
ME3 too

user2334
10:19 PM
I'm fairly certain Diablo 3 will have a ton

There was that question @Gnome linked earlier about love stories in ME3.. That could go their way but with out a cross-link game play oriented version of it, the tie is hard to get there
Yeah I am just saying its hard to tie gameplay and lore questions together
like 'How do I find a black mushroom and what is the story behind it?'

user2334
I don't think you need to tie them together: there's a pretty clear divide on what we take and what SciFi.SE takes. If anything, there'd be a special effort to migrate the off-topic stuff we have here to SciFi.

Or is it just up to us to answer with 'You can get it as you progress through the cathedral (I think) and if you are interested in its back story you can find more here'
So answer the question and then pimp the other site?

user2334
No, if someone's asking why X is Y and it's a question about lore that's found in a book, it should be migrated to SciFi

user2334
we only answer questions about lore found directly in game

10:21 PM
Ok
I am not talking about what is on topic for here vs there
I am trying to figure out how traffic here could be redirected to generate traffic/interest there
Since that I do believe is the foundation of the question you linked?

user2334
… by directing people who want their lore questions answered to SciFi

Yeah
Something tells me they are not as interested in the 49 people (assuming no duplicates) but the other few thousand people
And I thought migrated questions were removed from the site they were migrated from after X amount of time?
So our traffic here would only be redirected on the short term.

user2334
I think you misunderstand the point of this. The goal is to have an event, like Skyrim vs. MW3, about a game to boost SciFi's traffic. It's not about cross-posting questions to both sites or create a lasting archive of cross-posted questions or ask gameplay questions on SciFi

user2334
It's to put SciFi.SE on the map, so to speak, as a place to ask game lore questions

@James Mark can mod minecraft too, just thought you'd like to know.

10:28 PM
@MarkTrapp On top of that, both myself and my fellow CHAOSer Lauren, who currently works with promoting the Gaming site, are trying to figure out an event that would unite both Gaming and SciFi & Fantasy, and hopefully attract users from the massive Gaming site to our awesome site.
I think that is pretty clear.. How do we get the user base from Gaming to trickle over to SFF
@RonanForman Kewl :)
More the merrier cause right now its just me and I do appear somewhat busy :)

user2334
@James I'm not sure where you're getting tripped up. To suggest that this is about cross-posting questions that have a lore and gameplay element is nonsensical.

user2334
@James What Ronan didn't tell you is that I in no way volunteered to be a modder for Gaming.SE

@MarkTrapp What neither of you know is that I read the earlier conversation and already saw you not pick up at all on his mention of the mod we are doing :)
It is my assumption that his mention of it now is to attempt to entice me to entice you to help out :D

@Mark I was trying to get him to persuade you.

@RonanForman @MarkTrapp See :D

user2334
10:31 PM
@James Gaming.SE's audience—particularly the ones that love the lore-heavy games—are naturally going to have lore questions: many lore questions that are either off-topic for Gaming (because they're expanded universe stuff) or stuff they didn't think had a place on the SE network. The goal would be to get them to realize they can ask those questions on SciFi: that's how you have the trickle effect.

@Mark Stackgaming, not gaming.SE.

@MarkTrapp That is just naturally how it will happen if we get enough people in here to understand that we should not be answering Lore questions like @RavenDreamer just did and instead sending them over to SFF.

For the mod thing, not that paragraph.

That has NOTHING to do with the events that they are talking about trying to get in to.
@MarkTrapp I am not sure where we got into the weeds around cross-linking question (I think that might have been something I read on that other post) but that is in general not what I am talking about.. I am talking about getting the Gaming community aware via the contests that SFF is where Lore should/can go
Heck we could even get Gnome over there to ask some of his boob questions :)
Haha, That is amusing actually.. Two mods are the people who answered the newest lore question instead of potentially nominating it to be moved to SFF

user2334
@James Having simultaneous Diablo 3 contests would do it.

user2334
10:38 PM
Make a contest where you have to ask/answer N questions on both SciFi and gaming about Diablo 3

user2334
ME3Missions, just with requirements on two sites

So you need to be on both? Makes sense.
You should suggest it.

user2334
One step ahead of you :P

You can thank me later.

@MarkTrapp Haha, Yeah I finally got done reading the post to see it was done by you
I just posted a comment and +1'd yer post :)
I actually suggested the contests remain separate but reference each other (cause honestly Lore is going to be a lag behind not upfront thing in most cases) but also suggested a combined set of prizes as well
So Category 1, gaming, Category 2, lore, Category 3, best of both worlds.
Stupid disconnects..

@badp I like the addition of flying hair :)

English question: What is the difference between in, on and at When should I use it ? o.O

@Michel that's a very complex question that requires a VERY long answer

@Michel I'm wondering on whether or not you want to spend an hour where in you listen at people on the internet blabbering on the finest points in the English propositions usage. (most of these are actually forced and don't do a goot job at explaining how to use them.)

@badp yes, those are some uses but the problem is that each preposition has multiple uses

11:14 PM
@spugsley it's like 200% more realistic this way.

@badp definitely agree. Now the hair actually is everywhere

What's the yellow thing?

@RonanForman Lint/hair roller?

an "adhesive brush" to take the hair out of clothes and the such
(stupid google translate)

@Michel "In" usually means "inside", as in one small things is fully contained within a smaller thing. If two objects are "on" one another, that implies that they are touching, and often that the smaller one is resting on top of the larger one. "At" is when two objects are near each other, but not necesarily touching.

11:16 PM
@badp Thanks for the try anyway =) I was trying to find this on the internet but... doesn't look like that simple o.O (I really am looking at it in the wrong way on google)

@Michel that's because it's not

@Michel Alternatively - english.stackexchange.com

@RavenDreamer They're the more beautiful parts of each language.

it's definitely simplified a shit ton but it's the general idea

@RavenDreamer I Tried that, but this looks like a vague question, so I didn't create one about it. And didn't found one either

@Michel You used the proper tense here in the first sentence (didn't create) but not the second (didn't find). Haha :)

@RavenDreamer: I'm not so sure that the chicken question should be closed.
From the POV of a player it's certainly a valid question.

Q: What makes chickens important in Skyrim?

11:21 PM
@RavenDreamer I'm native of portuguese language, I try some english (as you can all see) and some french (need to, quebec is on the way). Portuguese is still the hardest to know, but the correct english is not easy at all >.<

@FAE Oh sure. I did too. at first. And then we started getting into relative clauses, and @#$* that!

Why closed instead of answered??

hah, I don't have the first clue about what a sentence diagram is!

@RavenDreamer hehe

11:22 PM
@James Because It's asking for a plot reason to an incidental game mechanic.

FAE
In pedagogy and theoretical syntax, a sentence diagram or parse tree is a pictorial representation of the grammatical structure of a sentence. The term "sentence diagram" is used more in pedagogy, where sentences are diagrammed. The term "parse tree" is used in linguistics (especially computational linguistics), where sentences are parsed. The purpose of sentence diagrams and parse trees is to have a model of the structure of sentences. The model is informative about the relations between words and the nature of syntactic structure and is thus used as a tool to help predict which sentences ...

@RavenDreamer: Will this do?

Anyway, there was a question I had, and I didn't really know wether to post it on meta. gaming.se;
what is the policy on asking question you already know the answer to relating to old games so that it leaves a paper trail for born-again classic gaming enthusiasts with questions?
For instance: "In Warcraft: Orcs and Humans; which side wins according to canon?"
Or is that WC:H&O?
I can never remember.

11:33 PM
@badp I'm mostly surprised it apparently sat in the queue for like an hour o.O

Now; I understand that as a framework for sockpuppeteering (or suckpoppeteering?) that it's pretty despicable, but whereas I don't answer it myself but open the door for others; is it kosher?

@WillihamTotland you can ask questions you already know the answer to, and you can even answer them if you so desire (no need for sock-puppeting). If the question is downvote or close-vote worthy, though, you're taking a risk.
@FAE wow, that's awesome. that guy wins the internet today.

Paul BreezeI'm at 100 skill for one handed combat so I'd like to try my hand at some archery. Is there a specific location I can get a kick ass bow? My friend said he crafted his but beyond doing the dagger exploit when that was first around, I'm not very confident with the crafting system. Any help from fe...

@agent86 So what stops me from asking a question, waiting for answers, then combining them into an ultimate answer myself and accepting it?

@James Not being a jerk.

@FAE Haha, I was almost going to add (besides not being an ass) :)

@James just downvotes and not being a jerk. Or possible mod intervention if you make a habit of it and people catch wise to it (and care enough)

This having to hit F5 all the time to get chat to work is annoying..

@James yeah, I think they've about summed it up. There's a lot of things the system will allow you to do that you probably shouldn't - the community is ridiculously powerful here.

@James I know

Well, it's somewhere.

I thought it was our internet here, not something on the SE site... Oddness

everything's fine here. it's probably something on your end. we all know you can't be trusted.

I can be trusted, its my end that is questionable ;)

I don't want to know anything about your end, thanks
