@Catija Shog posted a second answer, but still managed to sidestep the issue... It's disappointing... But I suppose my friends are probably right, the internet simply isn't going to be a decent respectful place and I shouldn't expect it to be, or be disappointed when it isn't.
Got into a spat with my partner about it yesterday. Their position was that it's not worth getting so personally invested in an internet community and that I'd be happier directing that energy into a more tangible "real life" LGBT+ community outreach group.
I had to admit that doing that would be easier, it's always easier to retreat to places where people agree with you, but I showed them an instance where it seemed like I may have made a small difference to an isolated person a thousand miles away, and that made all the frustration worth it.

9:33 PM
I don't really have a solution for you... I'm worried that you're seeing what you want to see rather than what is actually there... I mean, yes, there's obviously going to be people writing shitty stuff on the internet. Sometimes they actually mean it and sometimes they're just being shitty because they're looking for attention. I mean... you accused me of referring to a person as "it" because you're making assumptions about who I am and how I treat people...
despite every attempt I've made to show you that I'm an ally.
In my answer to your question, that's what I tried to say. I don't personally see that the community is forwarding or accepting the anti-LGBT+ opinions that you're worried about. Let's actually give people the chance to be decent human beings. When you accuse people of being otherwise, repeatedly, they're going to be... less and less interested in listening to you because they see you as being unable to take a step back and look at multiple possibilities.

I actually just now saw your answer my phone has been off for the last few hours. I actually upvoted, because it seemed like you were the only one willing to acknowledge the issue asked about.
I know I can be a bit reactionary. One hateful word sticks in my mind more than a dozen kind ones and that isn't great either. I know I'm guilty of that, it's something I'm trying to get better about. It's just hard not to hate the hate, it becomes a little consuming at times. Logically I know that's a crap way to deal with it, emotionally it's a lot more difficult.
I guess it's hard to resist the "Well, fuck you too" response that wells up when those things are said and done. It's hard not to wanna bash back, if that makes any sense?

9:50 PM
Of course I do. How do you think I felt reading anon's answer?

@Catija Fucking pissed, I'd imagine.
I tried talking to her about it... I was a little shocked to see her of all people react that way.

Why do you think it took me so long to write my answer? I needed to carve out an answer that actually answered your question while responding to and explaining why I did what I did.
And I needed time to step back and not be so reactionary to her answer.
My understanding is that Parenting gets a lot of it, so she's more... attuned to it... but when she pinged me about it she didn't actually explain her concerns.

Like doctors are usually pretty... desensitized? Like a frank discussion about sex seemed surprisingly out of bounds for her, which struck me as odd.

It doesn't have anything to do with sex. She sees a lot of trolls and was upset by a lack of response to this as a troll.

@Catija I saw that bit and understood it. What I got from her was more about toning down the language.
That's a bit of a blind spot for me, most of the people I hang out with are pretty open about discussing that stuff, so I know I don't react the way "normal" people do.

I'm not going to edit it at this point... I don't really want to make it active again... but sometimes euphemisms are easier to swallow (no pun intended)... so saying something like "I was on bottom" - which is pretty well understood, I think? might actually be less offensive than what it does say.

@Catija I was willing to accept that sort of thing when I discussed it with her. Seems like she's pretty pissed off too though.

... or not "offensive"... just... I don't know... more acceptable.

@Catija "acceptable"

We can add italics and quotes wherever... the point is, people can be squeamish... if the information is honestly of value, there's likely going to be a way to say it that conveys the info with the least amount of ick factor for the most people.

10:03 PM
lol, I'm sorry I just don't see the point of euphemisms sometimes. If you're gonna word it in a way that everyone understands, why not just up and say it? Not a hill to die on, just feels a little silly at times.

You always have to consider your audience. This is a public site that many people use from work... You've already talked about the fact you can't be open at work about yourself... surely you change how you say when you're there to obfuscate things without outright not sharing at all?
If you talked about your ex, would you call her your "wife"... for simplicity's sake and the fact that you're not open with your coworkers?

Just seems like doing that adds hang-ups for people. Tangential, but still an odd social convention.
Honestly where I can't be open, I don't talk about stuff at all.
Compartmentalize, I guess? Personally I think it's unpleasant to have to do that.
And I'm planning on coming out at work because it's getting harder to have to do that.

... maybe it's ironic... but you're going to have to get used to that here. We're a site about social conventions... and when you're in some places, you simply have to comply with them... and, for now, this is one of them... You don't have to agree with it... you never have to agree with the conventions... but you do, publicly, at least, need to accept that they're the conventions and comply.
No one is saying you have to accept abuse, though... or any sort of negative actions from your fellow users for who you are.

I mean... I wrote an answer on ELL about the fact that we need to teach children to refer to their genitals with their actual words because it's a valuable thing for them to know and be comfortable with.

10:13 PM
@Catija That's kinda where I was coming from...

A: Word for "penis" when speaking to children

CatijaThe reality is that this is very much an opinion. You might find some interesting statements on the Parenting site but, personally, I believe that kids should learn the correct terms for all parts of their bodies, including genitals. If they don't grow up using these terms, they are likely to fee...

@apaul But this site isn't where that's going to change...

@Catija Ughhh... You and your realism...

... we're not here to be on soap boxes! You know this... we've talked about it. This is one of them.
I can work to make my son comfortable with "penis"... I'm not going to try to fix everyone on SE to be comfortable with it.
But, hey... Roy Moore lost... so there is hope for the world.

@Catija There would have been hope for the world if that wasn't a close race...

Yeah, the white people vote was super disappointing... particularly the white women.

10:17 PM
@Catija And while we can't always shape the world we can try to shape our little corner of it ;)
@Catija Says a lot that people are willing to vote pederast before Democrat...
Particularly when they want to talk about being "values voters"

We talk a lot about how poor a job the Party is doing actually conveying the message... and it pisses me off that "we" are trying to float this "no, we're the party of the people" bull shit... which is just stupid and argumentative and... lame.

My main criticism of Democrats is usually that they are afraid to take real stands. Little too centrist at times
Bernie probably could have beaten Trump, just sayin...

Well, that's the other part of it... my dad's partner... spends a lot of time bitching about Sanders because he's not really a Democrat... and that's why he wouldn't support him.
I'm really ready for a new voting system. This first past the post crap needs to go in the trash can.
SE has more "democratic" voting policies than our government does.

Part of the inherent problem of a two party system... Who do you hate less?

Yes... which is why we need to be able to pick more than one candidate. Instant run-off voting allows people to actually vote for who they want, not vote strategically.

10:27 PM
Parties end up being the party of the party. More important to have seats than to represent your constituents.
Also... Electoral college? Really? What the actual fuck are we doing?

Yeah, I don't know... but the only people who can change it are the people who probably would instantly lose their jobs if they did so.

@Catija Yup

Well... within six years, anyway...
:P

"the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice"

Does it? I don't know... we still have really shitty gun control laws and people keep getting killed.

10:32 PM
Things seem to get better, just wish it didn't take so damn long...
@Catija But when we used to wage war genocide was pretty standard.

Our current president thinks torture is OK... so...

Also we've stopped eating each other for the most part, so there's that...

And that's not the least of his issues.

Really long arc...

I mean... I'm going to assume you mean literally eating...

10:35 PM
@Catija ya, literally. Humans used to do that.
Like for all the hate and division in the world, on a long enough timeline, we are getting better as a species. Small ray of hope there.
There's obviously momentary downturns, but we're making very slow painful progress. Just gotta keep fighting to make sure that trend continues.

Yes, sure. I'm not saying that the dems are perfect, but they're way better than the alternate right now... and if I have to pick one of two, that's my choice... and I figure, if I can actually work from the inside, I might be able to make some change.

Idealism is really more fun than realism. You should try it ;)

I've done that before. I spend a lot of time angry.
I'm an idealist who knows how to accept that the ideal may never happen, so I work towards it as I can.

@Catija Ever seen Doug Stanhope? He had a funny bit about Occupy. In all that time people were stinking up a park, they could have gotten jobs as cops and bankers and done some real damage.

I have not. But that makes sense.
So... I'm going to go actually do some work now... but I hope this has been somewhat helpful.

10:44 PM
If you're gonna occupy, occupy the local bank. Line up early in the morning and apply for frivolous small business loans. Tie up a desk for a few hours with bullshit. "I need a loan for my ant farm..."
@Catija Meh, helpful-ish. Always nice to have a real conversation about something. Have a good one.
