I think as long as there is no input/empty input, it sohuld be fine

Are you saying "no input" or "no empty input"?

(no input) or (empty input)

So non-empty input is a no-go, yes?

yeah
you could do echo input|prog in.file or something

Ok, cool. Thanks.

12:04 AM
and declare that as the way you execute the program

Ok, I have the very foundations of a challenge that I think could work out very well, if pulled off successfully. However, could someone take a look at this and tell me if it sounds interesting.

Australia's internet has been literally attacked by a shark.
Streuth.

@ATaco dont ask don't ask don't what do you mean?
@icrieverytim I know you can't reply to this, but interesting username. I did prefer the old one FWIW :P

An undersea cable has been damaged by a shark. The damage is bad enough that we're routing through the US temporarily.
(And a typhoon, but also a shark)

@cairdcoinheringaahing who is that person

12:09 AM
Are quines allowed to output extraneous data? For example, if my program was "quine", could I output "quinee" or "quineee->inf"?

@ConorO'Brien used to be totallyhuman

@ZachGates no, because then it's not a quine
Ignore my phone's autocorrect

Generally it's not considered a quine unless that extra data is a limitation of the language, like ans ->

So if the language outputs for infinity, it would be legal?

12:13 AM
@ZachGates if it can't be suppressed, then yes

no. consider the yes quine that can be "broken at the right time"

Sweet.

@ZachGates listen to Conor, not me. Dragons know more than dogs

@ConorO'Brien I.e. if the language takes 1 character output values and writes that character until another is provided. That cannot be suppressed after the program concludes (technically the program doesn't conclude).

can you give me a link to this language? I still don't think it's valid, and I'm not sure the limitation that ATaco mentioned applies for quines

12:16 AM
I don't have a link, I'm just pondering. Also consider: what if the language loops back to the top of the program after reaching the end?

hmm... interesting question. I personally don't think it's valid, especially if there's a way to break out of the infinite loop

@ConorO'Brien I'm thinking of something like a dedicated decision-making processor with a loop-structure. It would evaluate and go back to the top. The only way to exit would be to disconnect its power.

I have no idea, then

There's gotta be a way to atleast output something that's essentially nothing :P

@TaylorScott All the 0-byte solutions to the simple cat challenge you edited now look like 1-byte solutions.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Conor O'BrienConcatenative counting source-layout code-challenge number Your challenge is to write N snippets of code such that, when you concatenate the first K together, they produce the number K. The higher N, the better. Here's the catch: you may not use any character more than once across your snippets...

hold on what is this I leave for like 2 weeks and Mr Xcoder has almost as much rep as me
someone has probably passed me in rep lol
(also TNB chat forwarding is giving me notifications for messages I sent which I find amusing)
huh Tetris GoL isn't answered yet? I was hoping it would be done by the end of the month shrug (people should stop putting bounties on it tho cuz it's not like it's an easy challenge that someone's just going to finish within a bounty period)

2:26 AM
It's already done, the write up is still in progress.

o ok
anyway i should sleep now because I have to get up early since school starts tomorrow

does anyone know if it's possible to define tan in terms of tanh or vice versa?

@ConorO'Brien I'm pretty sure n * tan(x) = tanh(n * x)

> Math.tanh(3 * 4)
0.9999999999244973
> 3 * Math.tan(4)
3.473463847048733
I don't think so

2:37 AM

from some sketchy math site: math2.org/math/trig/hyperbolics.htm

is that the imaginary unit

and ohey @ZachGates haven't seen you in a while
@ConorO'Brien yes

@ConorO'Brien √-1 * tan(x) = tanh(√1 * x)

Sqrt 1 or sqrt -1?

sqrt(-1) I think
Let me test that
@Riker Howdy
@ConorO'Brien It works

2:58 AM

I say zeesh.
@Adám ^

"TIO has everything from ALGOL to Zsh"

@Adám I feel like that greatly understates the actual variety of languages
@Adám Although in that context it makes more sense to say "zee-shell".

"TIO – over 300 languages from ALGOL to Zsh"

That's more like it :P

caird coinheringaahingGiven a string that consists entirely of printable ASCII, convert all lowercase letters to their uppercase equivalent. Non-lowercase characters are left untouched. I am not going to outright ban builtin solutions, but if you are going to post a solution that uses the builtin, please also post on...

@NewMainPosts Too slow, bad NMP

@Mr.Xcoder actually it's still doing its job

It does :p

for example some people may not agree with my hammer once they even see this question

I agree 100% with the hammer

8:25 AM
yeah me too, but dunno about others...2 people seem to agree with me
(one of them might be you right?)

YES
ONE OF THEM (caps lock! broken) is me

The other one is me.

and a third one is me (that should be obvious btw)
also it's kinda boring with builtins...

CMC: Given a list of integers, find the median of the list of means of its preffixes

yeah totally not biased cmc lol

It should be ez in Jelly (spoiler if you do post a solution)

@Mr.Xcoder of course, see? not biased at all
:p

Oh come on, I had Pyth in mind, not Jelly

but the cmc was biased towards jelly ;p

MHM :/ - Now I try 05AB1E

@EriktheOutgolfer I agree with the hammer, I couldn't find any questions about uppercasing a string, never thought to check for lowercase ಠ_ಠ

8:43 AM
no worries, it doesn't mean that your question has policy problems or is unclear, just that it's a dupe

@EriktheOutgolfer It was basically an experiment to see if I can write a clear and easy to read question without using the sandbox. I should have done a better dupe search though

not search, but, write a title like "uppercase a string" or "convert to uppercase" and you'll be able to see possible dupes under the title after you focus away
if there isn't any, you can then return to your original title
oh, and peter taylor might find a dupe if you sandbox

@EriktheOutgolfer If I sandbox, Peter will tell me everything wrong with the challenge before I've posted it in the Sandbox

that's better than just posting to main
then the everything wrong will cost

On a different note, ಠ_ಠ I just realised that I can find the absolute value of something in a ternary, rather than some complicated mathematical formula

What do you do if you find that a website has a gaping security hole?

Anonymous
9:10 AM
@Adám Report it to the webmaster

@Adám it depends...if the site is about having gaping security holes then you don't report to anyone :p
if the site is about code review you publish it everywhere ;p

@EriktheOutgolfer Very funny. I'll report it. The hole is pretty obvious: The site runs a TIO-like service, but does not sandbox in any way. You can just enter any command and it is executed on the server running the service, as-is.

and...what is the site?

@EriktheOutgolfer :-D

@EriktheOutgolfer Nope

I am reasonably certain that, if Adám gave you the URL, you would instantly go there and try to break it, due to your poor impulse control that you have exhibited on numerous occasions in the past.

> 404 Error: Safari could not connect to server :-D. Please check your internet connection and try again.

@Mego In fact, it shouldn't even be allowed to ask for the URL.

@Mego and...why would I want to kill a server? like, would I want to get a lawsuit or something? because if I do something like that it would be illegal and I might be convicted for hacking or something...also why would I really want a url to that site?

well, can you copy-paste the three times to mothereff.in/byte-counter and see if there's anything suspicious in there? because apt-get can't normally do that
unless "apt-get" is really some modified thing that prints an error to stderr the first two times
so it looks like a real error

@ASCII-only nope the chromebook forces all accounts to be logged in from the school domain

also it blocks developer mode :(

Although we seem to be on track for actual release this year

No audio for me I guess

More content in the past 4 months than the rest of the past two and a half years.

@Pavel That just means they've been slacking off the past two and a half years
@Pavel oh btw how hard is it to get cobalt on the assault course

@ASCII-only incredibly hard
You have to be near perfect
It took over a week for a Cobalt run to be recorded.
@ASCII-only DB used to be published by nexxon, but now splash damage owns it fully, which has helped the game insanely.

Yes, plus 1 USD = 1.25 AUD

70 is faaaar away from 30 * 1.25

Oh, so I guess it's actually cheaper when you consider GOTY is 60 USD * 1.25 == 75 AUD
@EriktheOutgolfer Here in the US it's 40 for base game, 60 for GOTY (which is really just paying 20 bucks for some extra skins)

so total cost 60

@EriktheOutgolfer 30 would have been on-sale. I bought the Origins edition for like $35 last November when they had a sale.

@AdmBorkBork That's actually when I bought it too.

I also may or may not have spent another $60 on loot boxes

o_O
Dang son
When you really think about it, it's impressive that Blizzard can convince people to spend money on a random chance at purely cosmetic items
(Or valve with TF2/CS:GO)

I didn't play enough during a couple of the events to get loot boxes, and didn't want to miss out on a couple of skins I really wanted.

huh mathematica has a builtin for sales taxes

3:11 PM
So did you just buy boxes until you got the skin you wanted?

that's just great

I lucked out that I got a gold item during the summer games (Junkrat cricket, which is awesome for a Junkrat main)

$30 worth of loot boxes is (generally) enough points to purchase whatever you want if you didn't get the skin itself

Even the 3000 credit skins?
I actually forgot how much they charge for loot boxes

Yeah, with what I get from normal playing
$30 gets you 50 loot boxes, IIRC

3:12 PM
But it is really addicting to open them and hope for the skins you want. It's really the same concept behind slot machines

very true

@DJMcMayhem dirty bomb did this best before requiring crafting. You would craft lead into iron into bronze into silver into cold into Cobalt cards, with RNG at every step.

I'm slowly becoming a Tracer main, and I'm sad that there are a couple things I don't have for that character.

ok what are you talking about who has that much money for extras? maybe it's because I live in greece but anyways...

But it's dumb how like 70% of all boxes I get are like two player icons I don't care about, a lame spray, and then like a blue emote that I also don't care about
@EriktheOutgolfer I've never bought a loot box before. You get them from playing also
It seems like a rip off to me, though I understand the motivation since I've contemplated buying them before

3:15 PM
Bronze and up are functionally identical, so you might be throwing away 10 really good gold cards for a chance at a good Cobalt.

@EriktheOutgolfer Video games are the only hobby I have. I very rarely go out to or purchase movies, I don't have a subscription to things like Netflix, I rarely purchase music or books, I don't travel, etc.

^ same

well, even the video games themselves are too expensive if you live in greece

I get video games and art

you need to be good pirate or something illegal to be able to play them because in greece every 0.01€ is precious
that is, if you're lucky enough to have it

3:17 PM
Of course, the other thing is I know that my loot-box-money goes towards ongoing development of the game, so I like supporting that effort.

Like I said, it really is the same logic behind slot machines. They're psychologically designed to be as addicting as possible. Occasional rewards to keep people going, but rarely enough to bore them. Which is why most boxes are boring, but they rarely give something worthwhile.
And it works

^^^ the only reason people used to spend money on dirty bomb

@AdmBorkBork at least part of it ;)

haha, true

It's why casinos can make a killing when mathematically, they're practically robbing people. They understand people's brains

3:19 PM
The chance of getting something good with money was so insanely low people only bought things so nexon wouldn't kill our game.

@DJMcMayhem or just know that ripped off people simply want to get money to even live
and take advantage of those people
because rich or economically sound people shouldn't really need such ways to make money should they?

I absolutely agree that casinos are ripping people off

They shouldn't, but they go to casinos for fun, not necessarily profit

and that's a big trap too

I can understand why someone would play poker for example, but things like roulette or slots or the lottery are horrible.

3:21 PM
> Activision Blizzard revenues from in-game content reached a record $3.6 billion in 2016 source

yeah
and those are usually biased too
that is, against getting money off of them

That's all the microtransactions for CoD, Blizzard games, King games, etc.

the first time you just try out your luck with $10 or $20

My philosophy is this: If you want to have fun at a casino, go in with the mindset "I'm willing to lose X$ for the fun of it. If I lose that much I'm walking out, and I had a fun time. If I make X$, I'm in a good streak and I should leave while things are in my favor."

I really need to disable chatjax btw

3:23 PM
But then again, this is coming from someone who doesn't gamble and has no desire to

yeah it's unlikely the latter will ever happen :p

TI prize pool was around 10 million, since 25% of profits go to pool and the rest to valve, valve made 30 million off of the dota 2 battle pass alone this year.

But I have the same philosophy with poker. Last time I played with my friends, we had a 5$ buy in, and I lost every penny (though I was expecting too)

Most of the battle pass cosmetics expire at the end of summer.

But it was a fun time, so IMO it was worth it

3:25 PM
but then if you just want to play for fun then why should you pay at all? I don't get it

@Pavel That's a drop in the bucket compared to how much they make off of Steam.

Yep

@EriktheOutgolfer idk

@Pavel tries to get cobalt I barely got gold lol I'm terrible at this

But it does feel different when there are actual stakes

3:26 PM
@DJMcMayhem That's true. I tend to play slightly differently if there's actual money on the line.
