12:09 AM
Well, @FutureHistorian , there are few designs based off of real life aircraft (basically upgraded versions), along with those flying fortresses from Ace Combat although those are controlled by the UN since they would have the resources (probably taken from their member nations) to make and maintain such behemoths. I tried to post this but the factory acted up for some reason.

Well, it is fine.

To me nuclear energy, when done correctly, could actually help us in giving up fossil fuels in order to help the environment. But many environmentalists have begun to become anti-nuclear given what happened at numerous nuclear plant disasters. Unfortunately, those environmentalists who are pro-nuclear are sadly in the minority. To many environmentalists only wind and solar energy are the energy sources we need and we shouldn't use anything else.

@SCPilot which is almost absurd -- we need a diverse energy portfolio in order to have a resilient and reliable grid

Oh I agree @Shalvenay but unfortunately those kind of people have somehow taken power in both the liberal, environmentalist, and left-wing groups.

I'd say environmentalist and left-wing
the American left has become unanchored from liberalism

12:17 AM
Indeed. The right-wing has begun to take up the banners once held by liberalism.

@SCPilot yeah, the libertarian right has been a thing for a while in US political discourse, but they're definitely more prominent now than they used to be

Indeed.

Of course, I've always wondered about something: Which side, liberals or conservatives would be against and for psionic rights?

I don't really touch that sort of thing very much

Oh?

(I'm just not someone who has the trope background needed to wrap my head around psionics)

12:20 AM
I see.
Well, I got to run now. Y'all have a good night now!

12:37 AM
@RedactedRedacted yes — that is why the instructions say to stub out the body of text and then delete.

/Well, I am in favour of nuclear technology for space propulsion.
That is for certain.
Especially since it is the only way we can get to Proxima b and make a colony in it without some R&D needing to be spent on new technology.

@Secespitus yes, if it was posted in that form it would not be flagged or greatly downvoted. But he’s still under the quality auto-ban. He needs to post Answers and other activity.
@Secespitus no, as I recall, it doesn’t affect your rep or other abilities, and there is no indication of “current” status with regard to what's computed to determine this. But naturally trying when you’ve not done anything else is futile.
@Bellerophon correcting typos and English idioms, especially from fellow countrymen, is possible. His edit to “holy grail” was accepted — two points!
@RedactedRedacted nobody knows. The algorithm is secret to prevent people from gaming it. We suspect new good answers plus time passing will help. And in any case, it will indeed help you get a feel for the editorial style and culture here.
@RedactedRedacted what?

1:14 AM
@FutureHistorian re Brexit: see this video

1:27 AM
@FutureHistorian youtube.com/watch?v=2g_qk9Trt_E&t=141s Brexit passed because the proponents advertised heavily that ❶ it would save money and ❷ that money would go straight into healthcare.

Obviously.
And I have to say, that those people are such liars.
growls at Farage and the pro-Brexit camp of the Tories

@SCPilot we need a way to get the wingnuts behind anti-coal.

So? Any bright ideas on other alternatives to a 6th Generation Fighter?
Because I already developed the hypersonic, unmanned suborbital fighter I wanted.
But is there a chance we could see a manned version?

manned hypersonic craft would be a pain in the arse from an environmental control standpoint

@dot_Sp0T that link is a terrible website. It doesn’t state anywhere what the thing is, nor is there an “about” tab. They have current status where the overview should go, and assume that anyone visiting is already into it.

1:35 AM
What are other alternatives for a manned version of a 6th Generation Fighter?
And NOTE: It has to be OPTIONALLY manned.

3 hours later…
4:25 AM
Really? Banned for a pun? I know you didn't like them @JourneymanGeek, but what witch magic have you employed? Must Glarnak strike you down?
;)
Did you receive an important phone call with at the toilet convention?

Go to www.GotToGo.com

5:06 AM
@TrEs-2b I can’t parse that sentence.

@TrEs-2b I dismissed that. Even if I saw the validity of it....

5:23 AM
I posted a new meta post on how to write a good question. The guy never came back. Posting lessons like this will reach more than one-on-one.

6:00 AM
@JDługosz apparently this is only a live view. My bad wingsforlifeworldrun.com

So, here's something I realized; to animals, humans are Fae
Think about it; the food of the Fae, its origins and effects, are often strange and/or obscure.- Just like our food to most animals.

The Fae are strange beings that seem to know weird things that give them power or an edge over us.- Just like us to animals.

The Fae work and live by strange rules also often nonsensical or obscure to us.- Just like us to animals.

The Fae can easily obtain vast amounts of things we consider rare/precious/desireable, and have no problem with dishing it out wantonly for no other reason than amusement.- Just like us to animals.

@TrEs-2b Now the plot-twist: What if the Animals are the Fae?

Duh duh duuuuuuh

6:41 AM
@dot_Sp0T that’s the same page.

@JDługosz the hell
oh ffs, there's a 'to the website' button somewhere in the top-bar. But when you remove the location information from that link you end up on the live-page nonetheless

@dot_Sp0T it redirects to https: // live .wingsforlifeworldrun.com/ en
@dot_Sp0T ok I found (to the website). Now I can see that one can sign up, get the app, and has fine sponsors. But what is it?
Ok, try this: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wings_for_Life_World_Run As I said, they have a terrible web site.

@JDługosz actually is a fairly big about section: i.stack.imgur.com/urDZX.png

7:00 AM
Morning

7:12 AM
@dot_Sp0T That’s hidden in a hamburger menu on my view. That about page is what I wanted all along.
@Secespitus Howdy! Check out my meta post?

@JDługosz Do you mean the writing lesson? I already upvoted those posts

@JDługosz well that's web 5.0 for you

@Secespitus Thanks; I’m glad somebody did.

@JDługosz I think it's very nice of you to write such extensive lessons for these users.
And it will probably help a lot of people in the future

7:31 AM
I'm kind of happy about this Meta Post from Myrmidon, formerly known as Darkshine. Maybe he will finally start using the Sandbox.

7:46 AM
@JDługosz That would logically imply that the system is exploitable and thus, very imperfect.

@RedactedRedacted There is a little button on the right side of a post that you can click to respond to a certain message. If someone hovers over your post in the chat he can then see what you are responding to.

Good to know @Secespitus
@JDługosz Regarding to what you've said to me

@RedactedRedacted You can also see if someone used the "Type '@', then a few characters and tab to auto-complete' or the response method I just explained. A little button on the left side of a post is shown in the latter case and you can click it to follow to the original message

I always used that technique

8:03 AM
Is it just me or is this Monday especially wearisome?

@dot_Sp0T Mondays are always wearisome

@Secespitus but todays' especially dreadful :/

@dot_Sp0T What happened that this Monday is even more monday-ish to you than normal?

@Secespitus that is what I am trying to find out. So far it seems as monday-ne as any other Monday

Hmmm.... My Monday seems like a normal Monday
Maybe the weather

8:06 AM
But I've got this stalking feeling of it being.... worse by at least a magnitude if not two

Yesterday we had a lot of beautiful sunshine and today it's completely grey again
@dot_Sp0T That normally means "prod-problems ahead" here

hmmm, using binary to signify an increase in magnitude seems to end up in self-reference
Blabla is worse by at least 0b1 magnitude if not 0b10 magnitudes

@RedactedRedacted Regarding, OK. Still waiting for the
@Secespitus No sunshine here (being 3 AM).

@JDługosz It's 10 AM here and as dark as I would expect it to be at 3 AM

2 hours later…
10:15 AM
@Secespitus where?

@JDługosz Northern Germany. Though the weather is a bit better right now. I can see that it's day...
@JDługosz Your second lesson seems to be very well-received. Quite a lot of votes for this time of the day and already two good answers from what I can tell

@Secespitus oh wow. It's picked up since I last checked. Only 2 votes for the meta post though!

10:52 AM
@Secespitus Nordisch by Nature?

@dot_Sp0T Jepp

11:17 AM
@Secespitus If you want to know:

@RedactedRedacted Stop with those videos and comments... Please... That's not something you should write under the picture of a cannon

You nearly lost my vote on that answer of yours with that little comment

11:37 AM
Great… after reading Kilisi’s latest question I thought to myself “punctuation!” and now I have the song stuck in my head.

I don't know about such a song, but the word "Punctuation" has become synonymous with Darkshine/Myrmidon for me...

I can't listen to it right now, but I will give it a try when I am home.

Thanks. The more who listen, the more it diminishes my own torment.
Actually, I think this is an audio-only “cover”, not the original skit.

A sorrow shared is a sorrow halved.

11:44 AM
Morgan Freeman was in it.
Too bad he doesn’t remember it with fondness. To people my age, “Easy Reader” and skit roles made him a familiar face, before ever seeing him on the big screen.

12:22 PM
@JDługosz You missed the link in your comment here.
Can mods edit their comments even after a longer period of time?

@Secespitus yes. But the workaround is to delete and post the corrected comment.

@JDługosz Good to know, thanks.

So, I just had an idea: how practical are self-driving tanks?

@FutureHistorian We've had a question about that and the answer was: "Not very practical"
I'll have a look and see if I can find it
@FutureHistorian There you go

Well, nothing advanced AI cannot deal with.
Besides, maintenance issues?
Whatever happened to this thing called a "self-replicating machine"?

12:39 PM
If you are goind with the "I have a AGI with a lot of self-repairing and self-replicating nanites under her control" you can do whatever you want

I am not saying that.
I just want to ensure I have only a limited amount of self-driving tanks in my arsenal.
Or at least find a way to do a self-driving tank within 21st Century context.
So, any practical ways to make one work?
Or am I....well, forced to use puny humans to drive them in the first place?
reads some more into the answers
Oh............

The question I linked makes me doubt you could do this with 21st Century tech

Well, I am stuck with puny humans, then.

Hey, made the “hot network” list! Hopefully that will draw attention to the linked lessons, too.

@FutureHistorian It was a really well-received question and there are a lot of discussions in the comments and in older chatrooms if you want more information
@JDługosz Congratulations

12:44 PM
Oh.
Well, then.
So, what are some Plan Bs in the meantime?
Also, NOTE: I had an idea in mind.

@JDługosz Already at 8 upvotes and one star. And the more active time is yet to come

What happens if the US collapses in....say 2018 after a nuclear terrorist attack destroys DC and kills literally the entire American leadership?

The entire leadership? I always thought they had a really, really long list of people that take up the role of the president if the one ranked higher dies

And I am talking about the entire US chain of succession being killed by a 10 kt nuclear device in a terror attack.
The United States presidential line of succession is the set order of United States federal government officials who may become or act as President of the United States if the incumbent president becomes incapacitated, dies, resigns, or is removed from office (by impeachment and subsequent conviction). The line of succession is delineated by the United States Constitution and the Presidential Succession Act of 1947 as subsequently amended to include newly created cabinet offices. The succession follows the order of Vice President, Speaker of the House, President pro tempore of the Senate, and the...
This is the current line of succession.
They all die in the attack, along with Congress and the Supreme Court.
Well? What would happen after the nuclear attack and with the dead including all three branches of the US government?

Why is the secretary of Transportation not eligible?
The Wikipedia page of said secretary says it's rank 13

12:51 PM
There is a note at the end.
She is not a natural-born citizen.

Whoops, thanks. Overlooked that one

So, they, along with Congress and the Supreme Court all die in a 10 kt nuclear terror attack.

Okay, so all 17 of those people are killed by a precise nuclear strike?

What am I looking at afterwards in the US/former US, and possibly, the rest of the globe?

Panic

12:53 PM
Not just them. Congress and the Supreme Court.
They go with all those people.
There is no executive, legislative or judicial branch left to run the US at this point.
And what do you mean "panic"? What kind of short-term and long-term side-effects can I look at?
After all: Congress and the Supreme Court are also dead.

If there is noone to guide the people, but everyone knows that the complete leadership was eradicated people will panic

So, what happens to the US?
Dead?
Because I wonder what will happen.
What happens to the US itself as a nation? What happens to the rest of the globe? Etc.?

@FutureHistorian so she's a cyborg?

No. She is just a naturalised American citizen.
The only person who is legally recognised as a cyborg is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Harbisson.
And that is not our topic.
Our topic is: how would things fare for the States and the rest of the globe is Washington DC was destroyed by a terrorist attack in which all three branches of the government were completely killed?
@Secespitus? What am I looking at on a geopolitical basis after the destruction of Washington DC?

@FutureHistorian Chaos?
Sounds like a good start for a dystopian novel

1:00 PM
Can you be specific, though?
Or do I have to post this on the site?

I would imagine this being "too broad" and "opinion-based"

So keep it in here?
Or do I make it more specific for the questions in the site?

I'd say America descends into total chaos and the rest of the world is trying to figure out who the culprite was while getting America back up to speed.

Assuming America even survives in the first place.
As in: as a political entity.

It still exists, there is just nobody who officially has control, which often leads to civil unrest

1:03 PM
@FutureHistorian her mother had a “c”section, as was the case with MacDuff? At least she's eligable to slay McBeth, though.

Well, alright.
But how long does the US have before it de facto ceases to exist?

Who said it ceases to exist?
I'd say small factions are in a power struggle and the world is trying to prevent opportunists from taking over the rest of the US.

@FutureHistorian The 5th amendment may have gotten rid of that. After all, Ted Cruz tried to run.

Wait, just a question: where does the device have to detonate in order to kill all three brnahces of the US government in one blast?
I am looking at NukeMap and I need some advice.

Are you folks talking about The End of the World?

1:06 PM
@FutureHistorian Invite everyone to a big banquett

@Secespitus so hold new elections. State governments still are OK, right?

Well, technically, they are, but at this point, that is all that is left.
Literally.
The Federal Government was completely destroyed.
And DC is going to be a radioactive wasteland for some time.

@FutureHistorian That just means they have to rebuild the upper parts of their government.
@FutureHistorian Is there a special reason why DC has to be the place for the government? They can just rebuild it somewhere else. There should be enough space in America

Well, the problem is, would that be necessary?

My barber (now deceased) was a cyborg. He had a card to show airport security.

1:11 PM
Because I know that they can just move the capital.
But the problem is, would that even work?

@JDługosz How do you become a cyborg?
I mean in a legal way to show authorities
@FutureHistorian Has it been tested before? Otherwise nobody knows until someone tries to do this

So? Anything I should note before I start finding a way to collapse the States?
Other than the detonation of a nuclear bomb possibly smuggled from Pakistan (which is in the middle of a civil war)?

@FutureHistorian Say hello to the NSA watch list :D

I'd recommend staying away from the US for some time

1:16 PM
Not in real life.
It is for a work of fiction.
Not real life.

I know that. It's an ongoing joke that you sometimes see on posts here on WB

Well, technically it's not really a joke. The NSA does look for these thing and put you on a list. But nearly everyone that is smart enough to do some advanced maths is on one or another NSA list.

Well, I am still posting as a work of fiction.

@Secespitus pacemaker or somesuch. My mother in law has a titanium hip and that’s no big deal at the airport anymore. (Though they detained her for smelling funny. Like a 70 year old gran is really a bomber!)

@JDługosz Ah, okay, if that makes you a cyborg then there are quite a lot of ways to become a cyborg in a legal sense.

1:27 PM
@FutureHistorian I thought you read “I'm posing as a work of fiction” which is more interesting.

@JDługosz "You smell funny" is a very interesting reason for detention of a 70 year old...

1:46 PM
"Sonny, you'll be lucky to smell this good when you're as old as I am..."

Well, still.....
So, what am I looking at in the geopolitical consequences?
Following the attack?
0
Q: What would change on a geopolitical context between 2018 and 2030 if the United States was hit by a nuclear terrorist attack?

Future HistorianSo, a little thing that propped into my head was an interesting idea I had. So, let us say it is the year 2018, and a bunch of terrorists are able to smuggle a 10 kt nuclear device stolen from Pakistan (which fell into a civil war in late 2017). The device detonates, and all three branches of the...

Alright, done!
:D
So, is this good or still too broad?

If you need to ask that question. Perhaps you should post in the sandbox first.

@FutureHistorian If you are not sure whether the scope is right I would recommend using the Sandbox next time.

Oh.
Well, alright.
@Secespitus?
What kind of terrorist if Pakistan fell into a civil war would be capable of smuggling a nuclear device into the States?

2:02 PM
... Is that necessary to answer your question?

No.
Just curious.
One of comments specified me to ask what kind of terrorist I am expecting.
So, what kind am I looking at?

That is not a question we can answer for you.

I have no idea. And I am not sure if you need to edit that in.

@FutureHistorian You may want to specify what caused the Pakistani civil war.

@HDE226868 probably India?

2:06 PM
@dot_Sp0T A civil war, though?
I guess India would have motives for destabilizing Pakistan to gain an edge, but if that led to terrorists getting nuclear weapons, that puts India at risk, too.

Exactly.

Are there actually different kinds of terrorists? Just reply back that he's the usual asshole kind...

So, I am going to expand on the scenario as I go.

@HDE226868 without knowing what @FutureHistorian has planned I would've guessed that some radical element in India has created another war between the two

The question fails the book test. It should be closed.

2:08 PM
Like I said before in the chat I feel that question is too broad @FutureHistorian

@sphennings ?

@dot_Sp0T I think those two are kind of on a cold war footing... It might not take a radical element to set it off.

1 hour ago, by Secespitus
Sounds like a good start for a dystopian novel

I agree with @sphennings and @Secespitus. The only way you could narrow it down would be to restrict it to domestic US repercussions . . . but even then, that depends strongly on how the rest of the world reacts. And that's really complicated. cc @FutureHistorian.

2:10 PM
@AndyD273 I personally do not think that they would risk any open wars without a third-party starting it :/

Well, I just did.
:P

You could still write a book just about the US.

Well, I did limit only to North America.
Well, North and South America, actually.

It's still iffy.

Well, fine.
North America, then.

2:10 PM
Asking for political ramifications of [complicated event X] is likely too broad.

I mean please write a book about it.
It would really cool to see a book in the form of collected emails, texts, and chats from a situation room after such an event.

@sphennings "Tweets from the Apocalypse"

Well, I am trying to lay the foundation.

@Secespitus I feel most of them would be "Why doesn't my phone have any signal?"

2:14 PM
@FutureHistorian It's because the infrastructure got nuked.
Also EMP

I meant the question.

Oh

Is it still close-worthy or not anymore?
The scope is now limited to North America (meaning the US, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America).
The next few parts will go around elsewhere on the planet.
2
Q: What would change on a geopolitical context in North America between 2018 and 2030 if the United States was hit by a nuclear terrorist attack?

Future HistorianSo, a little thing that propped into my head was an interesting idea I had. So, let us say it is the year 2018, and a bunch of anti-Western terrorists are able to smuggle a 40 kt nuclear device stolen from Pakistan (which fell into a civil war in late 2017 after anti-government protests turned vi...

See?

Like @HDE226868 said "Asking for political ramifications of [complicated event X] is likely too broad."

2:17 PM
I am with @sphennings and @HDE226868 on this one.
Though you don't have to fear a close-vote from me - I don't have enough reputation

You could just leave out Pakistan, as the bombs source doesn't matter. I don't know about the scope... It's a little like predicting the weather, when so many variables are at play.
If all three branches are destroyed, who becomes the new president?

@AndyD273 That's one of the problems that need to be discussed

Does the vice president survive, or the speaker of the house, or is it all the way down to the 3rd floor janitor?

2 hours ago, by Future Historian
And I am talking about the entire US chain of succession being killed by a 10 kt nuclear device in a terror attack.

@Secespitus But there would be someone, somewhere that isnt there
The chain get's pretty spread out after a few levels

2:23 PM
@AndyD273 idk. The setup for doomsday novels/movies is usually something pretty unlikely to happen, that's what makes it interesting
E.g. a presidential inauguration that gets bombed?

United States Presidential line of succession is the order in which government officials replace the United States President if the president leaves office before an elected successor is inaugurated. If the President dies, resigns, or is removed from office, the Vice President becomes President for the rest of the term. If the Vice President is unable to serve, the next person in the line of succession acts as President. As of 2016, only the Vice President has replaced the President. == Previous lines of succession == The laws about succession were first created in 1792. The second in line, after...
But they make sure that at least some of the people aren't there, just in case

@AndyD273 Deja vu

@Secespitus Sorry, didn't scroll up to check

@AndyD273 No problem, it was a long discussion. I just thought it was pretty funny to see the same Wikipedia link again :D

Better to be resharing wikipedia links than asking "What is your question in one sentence?" for the nth time.

2:27 PM
@sphennings True

There's a Tom Clancy book that gets pretty close to this (it's a Japanese airliner instead of a Pakistani nuke), except that the just barely inaugurated VP survives. The previous VP had to resign for scandal reasons.
So he's VP for 5 minutes, then becomes president, and has to rebuild the entire thing from scratch.

@Secespitus Some perscription skin cream, perhaps, is mistaken for explosive residue.

A similar thing happened in the Battlestar Galactica Remake.
I wonder if there's a TVTropes page for it yet?

Aaaan we just lost @sphennings to TVTropes.

Alas poor @sphennings, I barely knew him...

2:33 PM
I was asking because I didn't want to do the research myself.

@AndyD273 That's also the pilot movie of the Battlestar Galactica reboot.

Muahahahaha

I'm glad you guys have such faith in me.

Oh, and also the movie King Ralph.

2:35 PM
There's a new TV series this year based on it too... I forget the name right off
@Secespitus Seems like this one is more in line, as it were: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/UnexpectedSuccessor
It also references the BSG episode specifically

@AndyD273 Yeah, that looks better

Q: Should this question have the hard-science tag?

HDE 226868I've been looking at the question What brain resources are needed per limb? The OP originally included the hard-science tag, but there's since been some disagreement about its use. Someone removed the tag in an edit, then I rolled the edit back, then there were some flags asking for its removal, ...

@AndyD273 I guess the answer is yes they've categorized the trope. Thanks.

Here's that show about it happening in our current time:
Designated Survivor is an American political drama television series created by David Guggenheim, starring Kiefer Sutherland, airing on ABC. The project skipped the pilot stage and was ordered straight to series on December 14, 2015, followed by a formal announcement on May 6, 2016. The first episode premiered on September 21, 2016, with a full season order of 22 episodes coming eight days later. == Plot == On the night of the State of the Union, an explosion claims the lives of the President and everyone in the presidential line of succession, except for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development...
The trope survives.

I've just posted a (long) answer to an old question. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to look over it.

2:48 PM
@HDE226868 sure

0
A: Can stars that are not powered by nuclear fusion exist?

HDE 226868Use a Quasi-star. The solution I think will finally work is to use a quasi-star, a theoretical object from the early universe consisting of a black hole of perhaps $10^{1\text{-}2}M_{\odot}$ surrounded by a gas envelope of up to $10^{3\text{-}4}M_{\odot}$. These objects generated energy from gra...

@HDE226868 You already answered that question here

@Secespitus I know. The answers are completely different, and if I combined them, the whole thing would get extremely long.

@HDE226868 Oh, look, a graph! I think I understand that graph! No, never mind...

@AndyD273 What can I make clearer about it/them?

2:53 PM
I tried... the first paragraph was great. Once the Lane-Emden equation showed up I just had to smile and nod.

Ah.

It kinda went down hill from there. It's not you, it's me. I can accept that.

@PedroEtCetera, I'm making progress translating your ocean bottom to computable data. Would you be willing to get me the land topography of the world too? I think I'm gonna do the surface winds and the ocean currents. In the literature, I've found a high correlation between current direction and prevailing wind direction.
@HDE226868 I love reading your answers even if I only understand about 50% of them.

@Green That's probably 49% more than most other users of this site

@Green I like the first half of that comment. I wish I could improve on the second half.

@HDE226868 Maybe expand the first sentence a little for us common folk, and then put a warning. "The following contains math, and may not be for those with sensitive dispositions."

@HDE226868 If you could improve on that number you could become a world famous science educator.

I regret that I'm not very good (okay, I know nothing at all) with differential equations. I know they exist but not much more. Most of the simulation equations I want to use are DEs but I have no idea what's going on with them.

@sphennings It's funny, my intro physics course last semester had a workshop on science communication. It's one of those things that's really important but really hard.

@HDE226868, this answer also provides a lot more context for our RK4 conversation last week. Glad to see you got that to work.
