Bob
4:00 PM
@allquixotic The web side itself doesn't need CALs anymore:
> Windows Server 2012 R2 configured to run Web Workloads ** do not require CALs or External Connectors. Web workloads, also referred to as an internet web solution, are publically accessible (e.g. accessible outside of the firewall) and consist only of web pages, web sites, web applications, web services, and/or POP3 mail serving. Access to content, information, and/or applications within the internet web solution must be publically accessible.

@Bob so for Intranet sites you still need CALs?

Bob
@allquixotic Yes.
The whole CAL thing is a giant mess
2
No one, including Microsoft, really knows what's going on

I wonder how $CUSTOMER deals with that
maybe they have an enterprise-wide "we paid MSFT $10,000,000 so we don't need CALs anymore" agreement

Bob
@allquixotic IIRC you can just get processor CALs instead?

ah!

Bob
4:03 PM
They are pretty costly, but they're for the case of "many unknown users"

We probably have them -_-

What's a CAL?

Client Access License

moo

Yeah, from wht I've heard about audits, MS basically go 'as long as you've got enough licences for your users, whatever!'
:D

4:05 PM
Never heard of it.

Meow, meow. I'm a CAL. I said meow, meow; I'm a CAL.

@ThatBrazilianGuy In Brazil, you laugh at Cals?

But then, Brazil has China-levels of software piracy.

@djsmiley2k in Brazil they laugh at Windows Product Activation :P

Bob
4:06 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy "Piracy? No piracy here." *sweeps stack of CDs under server closet*

When I was in high school I saw an original software package for the first time ever, at the chool premises.
@Bob I might or might not have heard first-hand an account of this scene nearly happen with a Norton representative on the backstage a live TV show.

@Bob +35 so far
keep em rollin in, lets go HNQ! :D
@Bob btw what upgrade command did you use in the end, -c? or -c -d ?
As I believe you weren't going to the dev version?

Bob
@djsmiley2k neither, just do-release-upgrade straight :P

:O
oh, does -c just... what, check?

Bob
@djsmiley2k That... is a good question.
But the server is kinda mid-upgrade soooooo

4:14 PM
:D
no, don't ask it
Upgrade the operating system to the latest release from the command-line. This is the preferred command if the machine has no graphic environment or if the machine is to be upgraded over a remote connection.
wtf
-c isn't even on the man page o_O

Why has dnf list --showduplicates kernel been running for 5 minutes with my PC at 100% CPU? Is that normal?

Bob
@djsmiley2k bu... but... askubuntu.com/a/769932/150985
THIS IS WHY I HATE UBUNTU
2

The first time I tried to update a Ubuntu machine, it kernel panic'd on the reboot and never booted again

I hate that as well.

/me fires up his box
@BenN yah, ubuntu upgrades are a bit of a joke

Bob
4:17 PM
@BenN That's what happened to me.
And this 'upgrade'
It
uh
A single file conflict transformed into an error that left random files scattered around and an aborted upgrade
what?!

orsonwellesclapping.gif

+45
@Bob yeah
the 'upgrade process' is bad, very bad
its stuff like 'copy all these files to these places', then do something with each file, then remove them all after
so if it blows up while doing something....
it's half done it, half left the results spread everywhere, and didn't given you a upgrade.
or a error message discribing what actually happened

No transaction test? Yay!

-c is '--check-dist-upgrade-only'
it's in the newer help
@ThatBrazilianGuy welcome to ubuntu :)

Bob
@djsmiley2k newer help? it's literally not in my currently-16.10 manpages

4:21 PM
@djsmiley2k You can't have HNQ as there are no slots free. I'm in front of you and already in the queue:)

Bob
ubunut pls

I have do-release-upgrade 16.10.10
oh, I have no man pages
not sure why, maybe I turned em off
anyway, it's in the help menu, -h
try that @Bob and if that doesn't work. maybe I'm not running ubuntu anymore xD

Bob
@djsmiley2k maybe after this finishes but then I'll be on 17.04 :P
if it weren't a VPS I'd just install fresh
My first linux was ubuntu. There's a reason I now build on debian for my servers -_-
At least it doesn't fall apart under you
It's predictable. And well-documented.

hmmmm
i still find it hard sometiems to find people who'll answer questions, accurately, about debian

Bob
@djsmiley2k such as? :P

4:26 PM
Oh I always have random linux questions all the time when I'm doing stuff (i.e. not right now) :P
gentoo had the greatest support for me, hense my love for it :D

Bob
@djsmiley2k ha. ask here? :P

@Bob for gentoo specific questions?
reaaaaaaaaaly? :D

Bob
I can usually find my way through it as long as I know what it's using
@djsmiley2k for debian lol

I will do with my ubuntu/debian issues ;)

Bob
unless someone else here uses gentoo

4:28 PM
thats the thing tho
would you randomly install gentoo?

Bob
The problem with ubuntu is I have no idea what it's using

Or would you deliberately use debian now?
@Bob the problem with ubuntu is no one has a clue

Bob
because in the last 3 years it's gone through just as many options

90% of the answered questions eanywhere it's just guesswork and 'sudo!'

Bob
and it's still not clear which one (or frankensteinian mix) it is

4:29 PM
yah
I mean, I can find my way around centos quite well, as well
but there's times when I just end up wtfing
trying to get non 'in tree' stuff, into centos, reliably, is hard

Bob
WHY
GOD
PLEASE
STOP

be glad you didn't apt-get distro-upgrade
it just wipes your changes xD
one of them does anyway
Also, what would you rather it did?

Bob
@djsmiley2k the same thing git merge happens to do successfully?
I cna't even get the thing into a proper merge tool

Hmmmmm

Bob
without dropping to shell and trying to figure out file paths

4:32 PM
tbh gentoo has various merge tools for configs, none of them automatic as far as I know

Bob
and then it'll inevitably throw an error after

actually that's a lie, they are partially automatic depending if the changes are just comments, or whatever.

Bob
yea sometimes this thing shows me an 'experimental' merge option
broken as it is

o_O

Bob
oooookay. it just... removed the ifupdown package
...isn't that the one I was fiddling with earlier for systemd?
it broke my kernel didn't it
2

4:53 PM
ffs

ifupdown is the package that at least used to bring your interface up....
sup @Burgi

customer services keep skipping procedure and have asked me to put something live and i've lost the email
so something went live that was broken
and the customer went mental
i'm going to have to take the flak for it

Bob
@djsmiley2k yea they might've gone networkd but trying to figure out what ubuntu's doing is a fool's errand

i remember the conversations at the time because i was skeptical
ffs

@Burgi yes
the database
we had this discussion a few weeks ago
i asked you if the had the email too, because it proved they were derp

5:02 PM
FFS HOW THEY EXPECT ME TO WORK WITH A 2009 PHENOM II!
I spend more time trying to prevent this piece of garbage from collapsing than actually working.

lol
It's only 7 yrs old
my desktop is ~12

@djsmiley2k At work?
Did they make you endure 5 years of having just 4GB RAM?

@ThatBrazilianGuy yes
5 years?
I still only have 4Gb ram
wait not sure it's even 4
yup, still on 4Gb
Windows 10

After the third time my boss tried to use my PC and said "this is unusable, you need a better machine" and I replied "ORLY", he said he would get me a new PC.
All he could get was a 4GB RAM stick.
Meanwhile, secretaries get i7's with 23" IPS LEDs, because reasons.

Calculating the changes
No candidate ver:  initscripts
No candidate ver:  insserv
No candidate ver:  libjson-c2
No candidate ver:  sysv-rc
hmmmmm
@allquixotic yea, I just got the same email :P
only storage servers this time

@Bob hope they come up with another 50% off deal for my current box by December :P

Bob
lol
I should get on that...
O_O
Windows (8, anyway): more fullscreen apps!
Android: more windowed apps!
2

@Bob is that on a desktop Android device or a phone?

Bob
@allquixotic S8

wow

Bob
5:19 PM
Apparently 5 is the max

on-device or via MHL/HDMI?

Bob
I can do one on my S7 I htink
@allquixotic On-device

O_o

hmmm

Bob
Wait. No. I just got 5 popups (plus one primary) up on my S7 (w/ Nougat)

5:21 PM
batch script to delete 1 of 3 different version of a directory and all files on it, for 50 ip's
so what, 3 lines?

Bob
@djsmiley2k Could do it in a single line :P

oh, but depending on which directory you find, decides which one you then copy on after....

Bob
@allquixotic It actually works pretty well :P

EW/SC/NI

Bob
Little chat window open...

5:22 PM
anyone guess the codes? :D

Bob
@djsmiley2k Write script. Write other script that calls script in loop. Done? :P

yeah maybe
Need problem describing better

Hmm
> Jeremy Corbyn suffered fresh embarrassment today when he was endorsed by the Communist Party.

The tiny party said it would not field any candidates on June 8 for the first time since 1920 - because the Labour leader is so in tune with its extreme left wing views.

Q: Need Utility Boot CD for UEFI

ZiggyStardustSorry to ask this again but the "Community" closed the previous question because of inactivity. I need a general utility CD, something like UBCD, that supports UEFI. None of the boot CDs I have support UEFI and right now I need to get in and change the administrator password on a UEFI computer. A...

why would you need a CD to do that?
Isn't uEFI like a whole dang OS?

@Bob Is that from some Android distro such as RemixOS, or is it the latest android default UI?

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy Looks like my S7 (TouchWiz/Nougat)
makes sense, considering that's an S8...

Never seen those home / back / etc buttons.
And you mean a Galaxy S7? A phone with maximize window elements? O_o

Bob
5:52 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Android ... 5? had multiwindow (split window? manufacturer customisation?). 6, 7, definitely.
my S7 had a single popup window on Android 6
it has multiple (at least 5?) on 7 now
33 mins ago, by Bob
@allquixotic S8
Also incidentally maybe the first (modern) Samsung phone without a physical home button

I have (had? my phone broke) Android 5 on my Moto G, my wife has android 6 on her Sony Xperia Z3, neither have windowed apps or UI elements, AT ALL.

I think it's Android 7+ only?

@Bob This looks so ugly, the only missing thing is toolbars. Lots of toolbars.

lol

Bob
@djsmiley2k yea stock might be 7

5:55 PM
I've never used an android device with big enough screen for me to justify trying to use multiple windows...

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy You're not really meant to use it like that, it was just an example testing the limits
More practically you might have one, at most two, popup windows

But 7598++ notifications are the new toolbars.

Bob
maybe a little video in the corner

I once picked up my wife's phone and had to scroll down the notifications. There were like 5 pages or more.

o_O

6:02 PM
I want to clone SSD to another. Can I use them both without Windows license key issue?
Wait. No. I am just going to install Windows 7 on a new SSD. Will I experience license key issue?

reinstall? no
you might have to re-auth the key

Once I re-auth, what will happen if I boot from original SSD?

that' one will run outta licence
....
What do you expect to happen o_O?

6:25 PM
If it's an OEM license then you have a relaxation on re-installing to new disk. It will be automatically activated offline once you start it.

But both SSDs are "tied" to same motherboard.
Only one can have OS running.
So can't I boot OS from either one of them?

lol

Original SSD has same OS as new SSD with same OS.
OS license key is tied to motherboard - not SSD.

if both of them have same OS then you can boot either of them and the one which has newly installed windows 7 will be activated automatically..what is your license type? OEM or retail?

Retail.
Hmmm...
I had same motherboard that failed years ago. I bought new motherboard and called Microsoft activation to transfer license key.
Don't remember if it was OEM or retail...

6:37 PM
keyboard?

Retail versions are tied to disk also due to the hardware hash ..you have to migrate the license..only one disk can have activated windows copy

This OS is Windows 7 Enterprise and it's volume license.
Oops...

how many tho? :D
should be fine ;)

I don't know. Laptop came subsidized by Villanova university in US.

volume license can keep multiple activated copies

6:38 PM
hmmmm
is it the uni's laptop?

@defalt Well I had to call activation line when I installed new motherboard. If it allowed multiple activated copies, I would not have to call.

because pretty sure they shouldn't have given/sold it to you with their enterprise install on there...

@djsmiley2k Student of that university sold me this laptop.

lol
that's a bit dodgy.

Why?
Is it illegal?

6:39 PM
You just said it's got an enterprise licenced copy of windows on it
no, but it sounds like it shouldn't have that version of windows on it

@Boris_yo then it might not be a volume licensed version

@defalt cant you just check in computer properties?

It says Windows 7 Enterprise.

@djsmiley2k mine is OEM..ask him to check the last 3 letters of product ID

Is there option to check what kind of license type it is?

6:42 PM
@Boris_yo in properties of computer

@Boris_yo last 3 letters of your product ID tell you the license type

158

that's weird..last 5 letters of my product ID are AAOEM..that's how i know my license type

@defalt I think you meant last letters of license key. Not product ID.

@Boris_yo no. i meant product id
may be there are other ways to determine license type which are not OEM
run this command slmgr.vbs /dlv

6:58 PM
there's programs that'll identify it for you
but it's likely googably anyway

slmgr.vbs /dlv gives lot of information about the license
once i found somewhere that how microsoft automatically activates windows 10 online..they send digitally signed certificate once you go online for the first time..i never found that article again

VOLUME_MAK channel
Remaining Windows rearm count: 4
That's excerpt.
@djsmiley2k Should I remove checkmark?

errr no

7:15 PM
@djsmiley2k Power outage or who knows what can cause data loss. Why would I want that?
Even unexpected removal can cause it.
Besides, it's SSD. Why would I need more performance?
It's already blazing fast,

7:45 PM
@Boris_yo without write caching, you'll wear out the SSD very quickly
write caching allows the FS to queue up a bunch of writes and send them all at once, which lets the SSD more efficiently store them
otherwise you could have a single tight loop constantly updating the same file in small ways (like the sqlite databases used by your browser) and blow through the entire SSD very quickly

@Boris_yo it's a SSD< why would you be unexpectidly removing it?
And what @allquixotic said, Don't make changes from defaults except when you know why

Got it!

also if you are concerned about data loss, your PC should have a UPS, whether it's a laptop battery (basically a UPS) or an actual desktop grade UPS
turning off write caching is a horrible solution to data loss prevention

Nod nod nod
or use zfs

I don't know if it's actually called WebGL2.0 in the list or something else entirely...

@djsmiley2k It's WebGL 2.0
@djsmiley2k I've improved the edit by adding that image.

SumipandaAs you can see in the below screenshot the access restrictions in the control panel only cover midnight to 11:30am, which is extremely dumb. Does that look like the title of a good question to you?
2ndly, I don't think a DV is worthy of failing an audit

@djsmiley2k Yes. It describes the problem perfectly :)
I am neither psychic nor a mind reader and I don't like guessing games. There is no point in ranting unless you explain what action you actually took to fail the audit. Don't expect everybody to have read chat ... ;) — DavidPostill ♦ 24 secs ago
