@msh210 I'd be curious to hear more about to what extent you felt the comment thread here: judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/14841 was off topic so I can avoid diverging too much in the future

Q: How does "community" work?

Shmuel BrillHow did community know to lock and delete this post for example. Moreover, it doesn't offer an undelete button (not that I would want to undelete it) and seems to have taken off a lot of points. How does that work?

12:44 AM
@yoel I didn't get notification of this chat post (and am here because of meta.judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/905/… -- though I must go soon). The latest comments related not to the answer but to earlier comments, which did not even relate to the answer but to yet earlier comments, which in some cases related to the answer. [cont'd]

@msh210 i hear, and if that's the site's policy then i don't argue that your application of it was correct... however it seems to me that we have a long tradition of discussions which diverge greatly from the original topic

[cont'd] My intention was to remove all comments that did not relate to the answer and keep the rest. (I may of course have messed up in some cases, removing some that were about the answer or keeping some that weren't.) Comments are to clarify an answer and the like; chat belongs here.
@yoel Here.

ok, so maybe then the question is why was the thread deleted rather than moved to chat?
i want to stress that i'm not complaining - just trying to get a clearer understanding

@yoel I would have if I could have, but, alas, there's no mechanism for doing so.

Q: Provide a tool for moderators to migrate comments to chat

Mark TrappOne issue we have on Programmers.SE is that people like to have extended discussions in comments on answers and questions. Try as we might to delete long comment chains and educate them about chat (example 1, example 2, example 3, example 4, MSO example), our chat room sits relatively empty and ...

yeah

12:50 AM
@yoel Complaining's allowed, too. :-)
I wouldn't want to discourage it.
@yoel I'm afraid I must go. Feel free to tell me anything further here. Even if I don't get the notification (as I didn't this time), I will almost certainly eventually return to chat and read all I've missed, so see what you wrote. Have a good evening.

@msh210 Picking on an old point, but (gasp) Jeff doesn't work here anymore. Does his blog still set policy?

2 hours later…
3:57 AM
@ShmuelBrill Jeff? Who's Jeff? ;-)

@HodofHod not only that, but does a SE blog set policy?

@ShmuelBrill Not rules so much as guidelines, I think. Some things are carved in stone while others are more flexible

Just wondering: I once read (or heard) somewhere that graduation usually follows once two Excellent statuses are obtained. Now that we have those two (area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/22435/…), has there been any further discussion with regards to our graduation?

@yydl I think it just happened. It will probably take some time.
though we are getting more users coming in
one day.............................................................................‌................................................................................

@ShmuelBrill Yep. It's just that I keep hearing that. I'm wondering what's holding us up. We seem to have extremely good stats for a site with a narrow focus.

4:12 AM
We got no less than 8 new users who got 200+ in just over a month.
must have tipped that avid users balance

@yydl Ki atem hame'at mikol ha'amim
@yydl it looks like it's flexible. see area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/1721/… they are over 500 days in bet, have excellent stats (except amount of questions per week) and are still beta.
while area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/1288/food-and-cooking launched within a year with only three stats excellent.

4:28 AM
@HodofHod I don't know. What do you think?
@ShmuelBrill That's an official SE blog.

@ShmuelBrill Not rules so much as guidelines, I think. Some things are carved in stone while others are more flexible

When did Moshe become none?
Also, what is the advantage to 'graduating'?
Everyone seems very excited about it.

@msh210 I think I'll close:

Q: Which rabbi was it who checked a person's identity by asking where he sat in shul?

ShalomThe story goes something like ... A few days after his wedding, a man disappeared without a trace. Many years later, a mysterious man showed up back in town, claiming to be him. He looked different, but he revealed to "his" wife all sorts of private details that presumably only her husband ...

@HodofHod Sounds good, if you think it is "too localized". I'm not sure.

@DoubleAA when we graduate (and are granted ordination from SE) we can finally stop putting CYLOR in every post
2

@Vram :-)
@DoubleAA A beta site is always under the sword: it could be closed. (I'd say that's extremely unlikely for our site. But still.) A graduated site is almost sure not to close.

4:32 AM
@msh210 On second thought, I'm not sure. It seems that Shalom wasn't so much looking for a source, otherwise he wouldn't have just accepted an answer that didn't have one.

@DoubleAA A beta site has very low reputation threshholds for privileges. A graduates sitehas higherones. This is better or worse, depending on your perspective.
@DoubleAA In a graduated site, the community picks the mods; in beta, SE picks them. Graduation is a distinct advantage if you don't like, e.g., me.
@DoubleAA After graduation we also get our own design instead of using the generic SE design.
@DoubleAA There are probably other changes, too, though none I can think of at the moment.

@msh210 To me that's honestly the most exciting one on the list (which isn't saying much)

how does SE make money? I dont see advertisements...

@Vram You do if you're not logged in.
(Also, I think, if your rep is low enough.)

4:36 AM
@msh210 I'm sure many will disagree, but I'm not sure I'd like to graduate just yet. I think many of the users here will end up with most of their privileges gone, and I for one would not like that (I won't be a mod forever, after all).
Then again, a new site design..... ;-)

@msh210 when I log on Incognito I dont see any ads. besides for other SE sites, which i see even now

@HodofHod I think "many of the users here will end up with most of their privileges gone" is overstating the case, but I agree this is something of a disadvantage.

Q: What is a “protected” question?

waiwai933Questions can be protected. What does it mean for a question to be protected? Who can protect a question? Who can answer a protected question? Return to FAQ index

Q: How does StackOverflow and sites like Quora make money?

GenadinikStack overflow and all its sites are great, but how do they make money? There is just one ad on a page in the best case on stackoverflow, and none on Quora or OnStartups.com - am I missing something, or these sites don't make hardly any money at all? THanks!

Protected questions will beanswerable by those with 10 rep rather than by anyone, which is good.
Anyway, I must dash. Have a good evening (or whatever it is where you are), all.

@msh210 Fine, but how much of that is actually a problem here? Contrast that with how many people have less than 2000 and would suddenly lose edit privileges

4:48 AM
@HodofHod you won't :____(

@ShmuelBrill ?

be a mod forever
:)

@ShmuelBrill whats " :____("
?

trying to make a tear

@ShmuelBrill ahhh. well don't be too sad, forever is a long time :-D

4:55 AM
@HodofHod can you do something with your mod privelages about this highly offensive material?
@HodofHod yup

oh, what is this

Wanna Discuss or debate, I am expert in both but in discuss sure we come to some result.
Mr. @Shog9 Why so? May I know? please!

@RobinHood You don't appear to be here to discuss anything. This chat room is meant for discussion related to the site Jewish Life and Learning - let's keep it that way.

But I didn't initiate anything, why he pounced on me. I just sitting in the corner and nothing.

@RobinHood And absolutely nothing happened as a result. So ignore it and move on - there's nothing to be gained by engaging in tit-for-tat.

Adjustment with right people is always better than Argument with wrong people..

A meaningful silence is always better than meaningless Talk.

@RobinHood Nothing happened as a result of that. @HodofHod is a moderator on the site, and perfectly capable of mediating such problems. As I said before, don't engage in tit-for-tat - then you're just creating more problems for the moderators to deal with.

@Shog9 Why my avatar changed, Serious now its difficult for me to digest.

@RobinHood Your email was removed. But why is a question for a moderator to answer - I'll let them speak for themselves.

Removed? o_0?

6:14 AM
@HodofHod Can we get rid of this? judaism.stackexchange.com/q/14894/759
(or other mods)

6:30 AM
It's been deleted.
(but it doesn't say by whom. odd.)

@IsaacMoses I don't know. He seemed to be asking a lot of questions. I wonder (SPECULATION) if this chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/3655374#3655374 is related.

@Neal That I'm not sure.

@HodofHod, would you comment on a post of mine, please? Here's one, for example. I'm trying something...

@HodofHod Thanks.

@msh210 what are you trying?

@Neal I wanted to get a notification in my upper-left-hand-corner-thingy.
One sec, you'll see why.

A: Your New Beta Theme

msh210I'm not sure whether this is related to the new theme (maybe it always existed), but if I get a notification (in that upper-left-hand-corner-thingy) and, on the chat.SE site, click the drop-down to see what the notification is for, then the background of the new item is not yellow as it is on the...

Okay, thanks for your help, HodofHod. Have a good day, and a good Shabas, both of you.

Demis Bellot on March 02, 2012

A few months ago I joined as a developer on the Careers 2.0 team – this is my story of bringing Careers 2.0′s new Apply button to fruition. Or, what happens when an Enterprise boy meets a Consumer Product Development company and gets exposed to how things are done on the other side.

One of my first projects after joining Stack Exchange was giving the job application process an improved, stream-lined experience. This experience gave me a different perspective on Enterprise and Consumer product development, which I’d like to share. …
