anyone feel like trawling the texbook to find any justification for this answer?

Q: Why does \lefthyphenmin sometimes escape its containing group?

ClémentIn the following example, subsequently is hyphenated in the first two cases as well as in the fourth one, but not in the third. \documentclass{article} \usepackage{fontspec} \begin{document} \begin{itemize} \item \texttt{Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing} elit subsequently. \i...

@DavidCarlisle See tex by topic 19.5. Switching hyphenation patterns and texbook, Appendix H last paragraph: At the begin of a paragraph TeX adds a whatsit with the current language and the current settings of the hyphenmins.

8:35 AM
@UlrikeFischer yes but \showoutput shows no whatsit and the texbook seems to imply that the whatsit is only added if language is not equal to current lang so couldn't quite tie it down. I'll look at t-by-t later, thanks

8:53 AM
@DavidCarlisle But even if I add a language change in the paragraph the "starting whatsit" is not shown by \showoutput, I see only the \setlanguages around the word in the different language.

@UlrikeFischer it's not as if TeX3 was done in a hurry and never really documented:-)

I have a problem which for sure has been solved somewhere, but I can't find any question about it
I have this equation*: \min_A\sum_{w \in \mathit{MFW}}\frac{w_E-w_T}{w_{\sigma,T}}-\frac{w_A-w_T}{w_{\sigma,T}}
I get this:
but I want this:

i.e. the body of the sum vertically aligned with the sum+limit instead of with the capital sigma only

@Marijn that's a weird thing to want:-)

well, LaTeX users want the weirdest things :)
but if it is indeed exotic then maybe I should ask a question on the main site
I just asked it here to avoid being closed as a duplicate

2:29 PM
\[
\frac{a}{b}\sum_x \begin{array}{@{}c@{}}\displaystyle\sum_x\end{array}
\]
@Marijn ^^^^

@DavidCarlisle it works, thanks!
I am not sure what is happening though :D

@Marijn arrays are vertically centred and as wide as their content
@Marijn just hope @egreg doesn't see

@DavidCarlisle I'll add that to my collection

I understood @egreg is all-knowing and all-seeing

@Marijn \mathop{\begin{array}...\end{array}} might be better (re-asserts the math op spacing that \sum has.
@Marijn the latter not the former

2:43 PM
I don't see any difference in output with and without the \mathop
what I do see now is that the \in-symbol does not conform to the baseline
but maybe that is intentional

see for example space before b in these
\[
a\begin{array}{@{}c@{}}\displaystyle\sum_x\end{array}b
\]\[
a\mathop{\begin{array}{@{}c@{}}\displaystyle\sum_x\end{array}}b
\]

I see it now
in my equation the body is also closer to the sigma without \mathop
but let's call that kerning

@Marijn I'm not sure you want the second display; I see nothing wrong in the first one and several dubious bits in the second one
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{amsmath}

\begin{document}

\begin{equation*}
\min_A\sum_{w \in \mathit{MFW}}\frac{w_E-w_T}{w_{\sigma,T}}-\frac{w_A-w_T}{w_{\sigma,T}}
\end{equation*}

\begin{equation*}
\begin{gathered}
\min_A \sum_{w \in \mathit{MFW}}
\end{gathered}
\begin{gathered}
\frac{w_E-w_T}{w_{\sigma,T}}-\frac{w_A-w_T}{w_{\sigma,T}}
\end{gathered}
\end{equation*}

\end{document}

3:00 PM
this gathered-environment looks cleaner in code than @DavidCarlisle 's array
but the results seem to be very similar
which looks vertically more appealing imho than the original

Does Loop Space come around this chat sometimes?
I'm looking for an explanation of some strange behavior of the knots tikz library, which he authored, AFAIK.

3:24 PM
@Marijn Sorry, but I dislike the second one very much.

3:47 PM
@JosephWright can you ping loopspace for the following please?
@percusse That doesn't work, does it? Pings only work if someone actually commented on the post before, AFAIK. — Danu 42 mins ago

@percusse I can do this, too---I'm a moderator at History of Science and Mathematics
I just didn't/don't know if it would be seen as rude.

4:20 PM
It's a recursive shyness. You wouldn't know if asking if it is going to be rude going to be rude either

@percusse Lol.
@LoopSpace I hope you don't mind me pinging you in this room (if you do, please ignore the message, and I apologize for the inconvenience). I posted a question about a package/tikz library that you authored recently (link), and I'm wondering if you would have any comment as to what is going on.

@percusse Hey! Long time no see. I hope things are ok for you given recent events.

Q: \bfseries not working

Umar KhanI have using a CV template from the web to make my CV and it worked just fine up till now. However, today without me making any font changes it suddenly won't show any bold fonts. For instance for the CV heading I use \newcommand{\cvheading}[1]{{\Huge\bfseries\color{RoyalBlue} #1} \\[-6pt]} % Ne...

^^^ Who upvotes these questions?

@AlanMunn Thank you, very kind of you. We are all safe, just two assholes, ahem, fundamentalist groups clashing
@HenriMenke What's the problem?

@percusse No MWE, no clear problem statement, no relevant tags.

@HenriMenke Looks clearly a color problem. Probably RoyalBlue is converted to RGB and lightens up.

@percusse I have no idea. There is no example. I don't even know what's going wrong for OP apart from »The \bfseries just does not seem to work«

@HenriMenke It might make sense to others

5:27 PM
@HenriMenke Seems to be wenneker-resume-cv. Or the original from Frits.

@Johannes_B Who knows... OP doesn't even mention which template he's using.

@HenriMenke Seems to be wenneker-resume-cv. Or the original from Frits :-)

@Johannes_B Of course the Template Gundar knows.

@HenriMenke I grepped my template database.
@HenriMenke I don't really have a template database. I have a folder called ltemplates in which most of the templates from the template site are stored as git repos. grepping is easy that way. :-) classicthesis and a poster template also define RoyalBlue.

@Johannes_B I'm not so sure whether the template defines RoyalBlue. I'd have grepped for \cvheading.

5:41 PM
@HenriMenke Gives me classicthesis and wenneker template.
wenneker-resume-cv/Template/structure.tex:\newcommand{\cvheading}[1]{{\Huge\bfs‌eries\color{RoyalBlue} #1} \\[-6pt]} % New command for the CV heading

@Johannes_B Oh, then you can post an answer ;)
@Johannes_B Wait, what? classicthesis defines \cvheading?

@HenriMenke I left a comment. And i don't have a crystall ball.
@HenriMenke Not exactly
classicthesis-typographic-thesis/Original/v4.2/Examples/classicthesis-cv.tex:\r‌enewcommand*{\cvheadingfont}{\LARGE\color{Maroon}}

@Johannes_B I just looked at the wenneker template at Overleaf; very poor typography.

@HenriMenke Well. Templates.

@Johannes_B people who put \\ at the end of paragraphs should be bared from publishing tex code. :(

in Discussion between Johannes_B and barbara beeton, 23 hours ago, by Johannes_B
I am a bit confused, i see {Name \par}\\ in the original. And also the strange fix for the title.
@Johannes_B @DavidCarlisle The original code is from Peter Wilson. I would be happy if someone could have a look at the relevant parts of the conversation to know if this is a doc bug.

@Johannes_B ooh \\ after \par is even worse than \\ at the end of a paragraph:-)

@DavidCarlisle I want to suggest removing \\ in LaTeX3.

@HenriMenke :) What would you replace it with?

@AlanMunn I don't know. Something which is really inconvenient to type like \IWantALinebreakAndAmAwareThatItIsNotAReplacementForAParagraph.

@HenriMenke :D
@HenriMenke And @Johannes_B wants the TeX binaries to be modified so that the word template anywhere in a document gets mapped to \endinput. :)

6:01 PM
@AlanMunn Well, we can do that once we define what template means.

@Johannes_B No, that's the beauty of this solution: no semantics necessary at all.

@UlrikeFischer You know the cyrillic script, right? Would you mind me sending you a private mail helping me with a little riddle? I figured out it is a URL to tinypic encoded as written german with cyrillic script.

yo'
6:35 PM
Evening!

6:47 PM
@AlanMunn \def\\{\\} that will serve 'em right.

Gooood evening!

@yo' @RunarTrollet hi

7:06 PM
@DavidCarlisle :)

7:20 PM
@yo' -- still afternoon here, but nice to see you anyhow. when does camp close down, or has it already?

yo'
@barbarabeeton our run ended on Saturday. There are other runs of other organizations at the campsite (we rent it)

7:51 PM
@DavidCarlisle And the tick goes to Boris. ;-)

@Johannes_B I know cyrillic as I know hebrew, chinese, thai, greek ...: I'm able to get it in a latex document but have no idea what it means.

@Johannes_B I can read the script

8:08 PM
@UlrikeFischer @egreg With the help of @christan i was able to know: there are russian number names (one, two) in there. I tried some times, but i cannot find the png image.

@egreg זה קל

@Johannes_B один два три четыре пять

@egreg Numbers, i learned that today. And/or a norsk good at the beginning. :-)

@egreg -- yes, we can count to 5 in russian.

@barbarabeeton I used to be able to read some Russian and understand it, too!

8:16 PM
@egreg -- to a certain extent, i still can. (i did the formatting for the grammar section of the lohwater russian-english dictionary, second edition, published by ams in 1990. plain tex.)

@barbarabeeton I stopped practicing it

Я знаю, как много о России, как @DavidCarlisle.

@AlanMunn русский

@egreg -- we still get enough russian-language traffic around here that i get a small amount of practice. also, in the pool where i do my exercises, there are usually a few russian ladies chattering to one another, so i hear it as well as see it written.
@egreg -- по русский

@egreg I rest my case. :)

8:24 PM
i've just found a glitch in the file algorithm2e.sty (an extra brace on l.1061 that causes the warning (\end occurred inside a group at level 1) ). stops our production dead in its tracks. i've sent a report to the author.

8:35 PM
@barbarabeeton I did it too and also Werner
@barbarabeeton See here

A: algorithm2e and xeCJK cause TeX capacity exceeded on texlive2016

egregThere is a problem in line 1061 of algorithm2e.sty, that reads \newboolean{algocf@displaygroupmarkers}{\setboolean{algocf@displaygroupmarkers}{false} but the { brace before \setboolean is wrong (and unbalanced). This gets mostly unnoticed, just causing a warning in the log file; in the case o...

@egreg -- thanks for the extra info. i also reported that the package gives the wrong version/date report in the log file, and the author's address in the documentation doesn't agree with the address in the sty file. if we don't hear by the end of the week, we'll make the brace fix in a local copy -- but local fixes always cause problems later, so i hope he answers.

3 hours later…
11:18 PM
@AlanMunn lots then

@DavidCarlisle Absolut-ly. :)
