Q: Boost Items in Game Dev Story

Andrew NatoliHey all. I've been playing Game Dev Story a bit lately, and have gotten to the point where I own all the boost items, have a fair bit of tech, and are consistently selling really well with my games - though I haven't yet gotten a GOTY award. My theory is that if I want that award, I need to pum...

Q: Why did the Van Graffs try to kill me?

John RudyHere's the situation: I finished Cass's quest (Heartache by the Numbers) peacefully, with stealth. I was not caught by the Crimson Caravan nor the Van Graffs with my sneaking around for their secrets, and Cass and I reported them both to NCR. I am idolized by both NCR and (I'm not sure how this...

Q: How ca I increase the screen resolution of Minecraft on a mac?

Lucas McCoyWhen I maximize Minecraft on my mac it just changes the size of the window, not the actual game. How can I get a higher resolution? (Example): I believe that is 1280x800px.

@Mana I don't know if you're joking.
KISS means keep it simple, stupid.

@Lee well about Jeff flirting with LessPop, yes. About the abbreviations, no.
I knew YMMW but not the other two.

If you ever listened to our sadly defunct podcast, you probably heard about Twitter … a lot. I’ve been a longtime user of the service (since 2005, actually) and I was always surprised how much utility I got out of the thing. Even Joel Spolsky, a longtime skeptic of the service, is a believer now.

We decided to create Twitter accounts for each Stack Exchange 2.0 site that will broadcast interesting questions about every three hours. Believe me — I despise spam as much as anyone, and I fully realize that Twitter is not RSS … …

Q: Why doesn't spotting enemies always work?

Mark RogersIn multiplayer mode, it says in the key mappings that the 'Q' key spots. So I assume that it's like the older games and you have to target someone and hit 'Q' to spot them. This works most of the time, but there are plenty of times where it doesn't work well. Like when I'm spotting from a UAV, ...

A: Are book / movie / TV series identification questions allowed?

LessPop_MoreFizzI'm going to say no. Clearly, this is going to be a contentious subject, but I'd point you to this discussion over on Gaming.SE's meta to get a sense of some of the arguments both pro and con. The key thing to keep in mind about the Con argument in my mind is this: While 'Identify this X' questi...

Q: Is your appearance as the game progresses linked to your performance?

AubergineI'm currently playing through Arkham Asylum and having quite a blast. What I was wondering, however, is if this degradation is in any way...

Q: Nice DPad controller for fighting games on XBOX 360

danixdSo I want to be able to play fighting games on a 360, but the standard controller's D-Pad is terrible. I don't really want to use an arcade stick either. Are there any controllers available (for a reasonable price) that are better suited to playing fighting games?

someone please summarize CES tablets for me! I'm going crazy reading reviews looking for the cheapest one that will work

@Mechko Summary: wait 2 months then do your research again.

NOOOOOO! I NEED NEW TECH NOW!
why are all the release dates for cool tech/games aimed either for midterms or finals week?

@Mechko here, have an 8 digit calculator.

glare

1:20 PM
Maybe the problem is I don't have the need for a tablet, or a need for TECH NOW OMFG

@badp Meh, a graphic calculator would probably be more geeky

@YiJiang meh, I have never been allowed to use one when it counts.

@badp unless there is trig or natural log involved why would you need a calculator in any case?

@Mechko during exams I do all my calculations on a scientific calculator, lest I write 3 + 3 = 9 or somesuch somewhere in a large calculation in a step of a larger problem.
(Also, calculators are so handy when complex numbers are involved.)

I make more mistakes on a calc. I just happen to work really fast, so I tend to do exams twice to make sure there aren't silly mistakes like that
@badp I guess it's like excel for me. Would be useful if I knew how to use it.

1:26 PM
mind you, I use one of those scientific calculators where you can view and edit your input
2+7=
      9.
@Mechko It's really not that difficult. You have a sheet. You put numbers on it. Every location has a name. You can use names to do calculations.

see... it's like memory management!

yes (?), except it's not as flexible as memory.

well I HATE memory management. So there

Q: Dragon Age playthrough required before DA2?

ScottI preordered Dragon Age 2, but I have never played Dragon Age:Origins. Am I going to be lost? My plan is to eventually play the first one, but should I do this before I start the sequel? Are there going to be a save-game import feature for the sequel?

@badp When do you ever, really

@ArdaXi Spreadsheets can't do everything.

Fair enough. Whenever they can't, I use Perl.
But I can hardly do that during an exam can I

Perl and Python are on the same line of the divide.
Why, can you use Excel in exams?
Fancy, I've never been admitted a graphing calculator in university.

I got mine in high school

4:05 PM
(In high school they banned anything programmable instead.)

I use a Casio fx-9860GII
It supports both Basic and spreadsheets

← Casio fx-570MS

I have that one too.
That's my calculator's little brother.

I'm a fan of the SOLVE button, for when you can't be bothered to write equations the right way :P
although I guess that fx-9860GII easily runs laps around it.
It's fine, I need a calculator, not a programmable handheld gaming device :P

@badp If they had done this in highschool I would have never learned to program
cheating on tests is the reason I got into programming in the first place

4:11 PM
Besides I think we reached a point where a programmable calculator ought to be able to run real programs in "real" languages.
I guess Python can't be (easily) ported to an embedded CPU, but something like Go should do.

holy cow...

or well anything more than interpreted BASIC :)

What's wrong with C?

Do they support C?

oh wait, you said BASIC not ASM
I misread that
I thought you said "anything more than interpreted ASM"
and I said "what's wrong with C"
making a joke that C is interpreted ASM

4:15 PM
@badp I played FF7 last night...

@TheX I'll rate that nonsequitur 7/10
So are there programmable calculators that run, er, stuff that isn't BASIC?

@badp I don't get it....
oh wait you mean it has nothing to do with the current conversation...

@badp not 7/14? snort

@badp It supports C, yes. Not directly programmed on the calc though.

@TheX or the person you're talking with: I've never played any FF game :)

4:17 PM
The thing comes with a USB cable.

@ArdaXi uh, I figured that'd be to write BASIC in a slightly more comfortable way.

oh... i thought you asked me about it before... maybe I am thinking of someone else... it is hard to keep all my conversations straight....

@badp Nope. You get to put full C add-ins on it. It also comes with a calc-to-calc cable to transfer files.
@badp Wait, that's not the same model.

@ArdaXi Still waiting.

@LessPop back in the day when I was heavy into arena the forums always instantly depressed me. Every time I left them I couldn't help but feel like the whole game was a broken waste of time (of course it was never that bad except for that one time with ret pally's)

@Taboo also, you are terrible, you click and keyboard turn, and nothing you say is relevant anyway because of these things, so stay the fuck out of the conversation.
Although, I have to say, my enjoyment/the usefullness of the R&D forum increased greatly once I installed the script that greyed out all posts from users with a WoWprogress rank below 500.
wonder if the guy that made that has done one for the new forums...

lol damn thats a good idea! I just never went back lol
but your right, the community can be pretty awful on the forums. For instance: any post from a mage has no weight because frost is OP
There used to be a number of really good communities built off the ability to scrape the armory, arenajunkies comes to mind. I was kinda sad to see them destroyed with the armory update...

@Taboo Yeah, it made such a huge difference in the quality of R&D
the worst casualty of the Armory Update is hands down the Undermine Journal.
Armory scraping for characters is still robust enough that most of the third party tools will work with an update.
but UJ is dead dead dead.

not sure if I ever used UJ
was it a pve site?

11:02 PM
it was an auction house site
you can still see the data up until the date the armory stopped feeding info
it's pretty increidble

damn thats pretty awesome!

it was hands down the best thing for AH pvp
(which is my preferred flavor of PvP. Not much of an Arena/BG player personally.)

Another day ends without elections. :|

@LessPop AH pvp, :) I like that

@badp Why are you so excited for the elections?

11:05 PM
Well... I guess that's not too bad after all!
@Mana Because our mods need our support!

aww
yeah you're right

So they can rule with an iron fist.

heh
Certainly an admirable objective, although it's really up to our mods whether or not they choose to elect themselves.
I hope they would.

@badp I prefer velvet gloves personally.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Velvet gloves around iron fists work too.

11:11 PM
@badp is this community so uncontrollable that it needs an iron fist?

@Taboo No, but we like arguing endlessly.

@badp aaah the ol' infinite loop

Needed ~3 months to ban game-rec questions
Mods didn't feel like imposing a resolution because they weren't elected :)

@badp makes sense until the community can iron out some of the debate-able issues
@badp where does Jeff stand on it?

@Taboo Jeff is too busy hating identify-this-game
although this is partially relevant
Posted by Jeff Atwood on November 23rd, 2010

Over the last 2.5 years, we’ve identified a few problematic classes of questions that tend to get asked on our sites. Many of these are documented in our standard set of close reasons: exact duplicate, off-topic, subjective and argumentative, not a real question, and too localized.

However, as we launched the great Super User experiment, a new, previously unknown class of problematic questions emerged — the shopping recommendation.

That is, on Super User we began encountering questions like: …

11:20 PM
@badp I meant where does jeff stand on the power of the moderators, does he think they should be making decisions or wait until the community has voted?
@badp i did read the identify-this-game post though... I found it pretty funny he was so passionately against it =D

@Taboo I guess he stands on the side of moderators being smart people
If you go on MSO you'll see that Jeff has no trouble declining popular feature requests
and otoh the reqs tab is sorted by votes, so clearly voting does have some weight.
What counts however is not how many people agree with a decision, but the reasons that are behind it.

@badp it's nice to have an intelligent community

@Taboo We're standing on the shoulders of giants.

Q: Non-Legalese EULA for Diamonds?

FarseekerI just accepted the UELA for being a diamond mod on the site that I moderate. I even read the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy as required. But wo...

11:35 PM
@Taboo Thing is, since that post, the vast majority of I-T-G questions have been of the most pernicious, execrable, useless variety imaginable.

@lesspop thus proving jeff's point that they don't belong?

@Feeds What an interesting question

@Taboo I think so. Others seem to disagree with me.

Didn't know being a moderator meant signing a contract.

I'm of the opinion that Identify-this-game, while not inherently 'bad', and while theoretically on topic, should be gotten rid of, primarily because as the questions it engenders are, almost universally terrible.
and the vast majority of them are from low rep users that never return.

11:38 PM
@lesspop and the idea is they can be answered in chat?

@Taboo Can't they?
After all Jeff thinks of them as nothing but Getting To Know You Questions.

@Taboo They can be answered on Yahoo Answers for all I care, I'm of the opinion that the tag simply attracts terrible questions, clutters the site, and generally provides low value.

Might as well do it on the Getting To Know You site.

@badp I suppose, I haven't spent a whole lot of time in chat so I'm not terribly sure

They fail to Make The Internet A better Place, which is an important part of what SE is all about.

11:40 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Debatable.

@badp for every good ITG there are ten that should be closed as NARQ for being utterly incoherent. Those good questions aren't worth attracting the sludge.
But on that note, there is some delicious chinese food waiting for me to go pick it up, so I am going to go do that. Back in a bit, later all.

@lesspop enjoy
also on that note I think i'll finish up this chunk of code so I can go home :) Thanks for bringing me up to speed
