@NickChammas You could do the sort of nasty crap we used to do with VB6 where you catch and re-raise the error in the error handler of each procedure and tack stack trace information onto it with each step.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Precisely what i was about to suggest :)
@NickChammas If this is for errors, Erland has examples

nice. 600-table schema, total DB size of 130GB and I have to try and find the one field that's causing an application error
but I haven't been told which table

@SimonRigharts Know the column name?

Nope. All the application says is "field cannot be null" when the user tries to print a specific pdf
which is generated by the application from a whole bunch of tables, and naturally it's not documented which tables

@SimonRigharts Brilliant. You gotta love these little curve balls :)

1:03 AM
@SimonRigharts Use SQL Profiler. Catch database errors. Profit.
@MarkStoreySmith added mine

@NickChammas Sybase not SQL Server unfortunately

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I'm gonna write a blog post about the nasty crap that is implementing queues in SQL Server.
:)
@SimonRigharts no equivalent for Sybase?

Q: Varchar to date in sqlserver 2008

M.S.NayakI have varchar data in Database table which stores date in DD-MM-YYYY format. I want to select that varchar in MM-DD-YYYY format. im using select convert (varchar(30),(select CONVERT(datetime,'16-11-2011',103)),101) IT gives 11/16/2011 Any simple query is possible for this?

Q: Who decides the migration paths of questions?

DTestCurrently, if I flag a question as off-topic, I only have the option to recommend it goes to meta DB. Will I ever be able to flag it as more appropriate for ServerFault or SO?

but I asked SO mods and they said no (on-topic but duplicate x100 so no value migrating). I closed it instead - that's our only other option really.

gbn
OK, cool. I've read that meta.so before but clean forgot...

I've added a comment there just in case we've been completely forgotten
@everyone Oct 22: 3k, Dec 8: 4k, Dec 20: 5k, Jan 19: 6k - that puts us at #20 on the network if you care about such things :-) Hurray, Well done!

3:00 PM
@JackDouglas whatup. :D
So @JackDouglas the migration targets list ... I can't find the actual history of migrations, they seem to have removed that from the data dump, and our information doesn't go back past 90 days (dumb thing to do)

anyone have insight into this one?

Q: Meaning of 'SET' in error message 'Null value is eliminated by an aggregate or other SET operation'

onedaywhenI saw the above 'ANSI warning' message today when running a colleague's script (and I don't know which of the many statements caused the warning to be shown). In the past I've ignored it: I avoid nulls myself and so anything that would eliminate them is a good thing in my book! However, today th...

well nulls are eliminated by sum() and union ie an aggregate or some other 'set' operation, so I'm with Martin at first glance
@jcolebrand I'll ask RC then...
It's surely not too early for us by now

JNK
The message doesn't pop up with UNION, at least not in SS2008

@JackDouglas no, but I'll be ballsed if I can find our actual #s

@jcolebrand are you just curious?

3:13 PM
at this point yes

gbn
3:23 PM
@JNK answered.

@gbn Strange, I thought OneDayWhen was fairly SQL pro?

gbn
@MarkStoreySmith if you look for this stuff in MySQL you won't see it
relational theory <> SQL <> MySQL <> SQL Server
3
oh yes <> ANSI standards

@gbn Roger :)

JNK
@gbn - I thought it may be related to that setting, but it wouldn't explain why the warning says or other SET operation since that setting doesn't affect how the NULL is handled, only if the warning gets returned
onedaywhen knows a lot about relational theory
but I don't think he has a lot of experience with SQL Server operationally
he's one of those people who thinks NULL should never ever be allowed under any circumstances

gbn
@JNK added another example: also relates to column truncation

3:37 PM
Do we want this from SU?

Q: Creating a New Database Across a Network with SQL Server 2008 R2

@JackDouglas Its probably filesystem permissions rather than a SQL issue

@MarkStoreySmith thanks Mark :-)

@MartinC that sucks mate

@jcolebrand Afternoon chap

Did we ever discuss that whole BI proposal being merged with us? I know there was some discussion on meta, and we mods were going to make sure we had our ducks in a row first, but it needs to be a public discussion
11
Q: Opinions about merging the Business Intelligence proposal into this site

ConcernedOfTunbridgeWellsI had a conversation a few days ago about merging the Business Intelligence proposal with this site. There are a few ongoing conversations about the direction of this site, so I'll add another item to the mix. Should the definition of this site be expanded to include Business Intelligence topic...

@jcolebrand AFAIK all in favour thus far

Have we had folks from the BI proposal here to affirm that?
I think Concerned is the primary user in that regard, and I'm pretty sure he's on board
@aarthi You kicking about dear?

4:19 PM
@jcolebrand There is a bit of comment on the area 51 proposal
But I didn't really get much feedback from the committers.

It's dpolitts concern that is my concern
BI isn't really part of DBA, except in tangent
there's a Venn overlap, but that's about it, an overlap

Most of the feedback I've had is positive, and I haven't really seen anyone come up with a cogent argument against that's not just handwringing about the 'dba' title.

"Advanced Database Topics" ... almost captures what we want
"Advanced Data Topics" is almost there too
"Advanced Data" just doesn't sound right

I think most people here are in agreement that the site also includes a broder set of database topics than just database administration.
The B.I. merging question is about making it explicit in the terms of reference that B.I. questions - including development related ones - are on-topic for the dba site.
Slightly separate from the naming issue, but it will cause confusion to B.I. folks in the way it causes confusion to others.

Yeah, hence I think we really need a new name

4:24 PM
I was summoned?

@jcolebrand Although I don't want to conflate that issue with whether we want to consider B.I. questions on-topic for the site.

I think they have to be conflated ...
@Aarthi trying to move this discussion along so we can figure out where we stand on this once and for all ;-)
It doesn't have to be had right now, just thought you might be interested that I had brought it up again (now that I'm not dealing with back issues and can concentrate)

There are two separate issues:
(a) is the dba.se name causing a problem
(b) do we want to have B.I. and data warehouse questions explicitly included in scope.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I see it as being more like (a) if we take on more questions than we already do, is the name going to be a turnoff for most of the people we really want here in the first place, and (b) does our scope allow for BI as well, or is that going to dilute things too far

I think if we solve B, we can address A.
/noob opinion

4:27 PM
@Aarthi I'm afraid A will dictate B

I think the 'dba' name is kind of misleading, but I haven't seen a better option in the ones discussed so far. 'Advanced database topics' is technically correct but sounds a bit lame. Not convinced that it's actually a better name than dba.se

@jcolebrand :O An ouroborous!

yes. yes it is. Also, quit troping.

Wait, what? :<
I'm reading meta posts!

@Aarthi Someone's got to do it.
Read meta posts, I mean.

4:30 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Heh, as a community team person, it's literally my job :P

I know. :)
The B.I. proposal got to commitment, but the support is a bit lukewarm.

So I think the only question is this about "do we want to include BI in our scope" ... where do we draw the line on apps?

So I asked the dba.se folks if they wanted to explicitely include this material in the terms of reference for dba.se.
@jcolebrand I know the answer to this:

For example: Excel would primarily be on topic for SU, but there are some Excel answers that are much better suited from the stats.se site

If your question is about an application consuming the data then it's an apps question.

4:32 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells but not if your question is about writing code for the application?
where do we draw the line with access users?

If the question is primarily about writing application code than it's a SO question.
You could, in theory write an application that consumed an OLAP cube as its data source. That would be an apps quesiton just as much as a question about ADO.NET usage woudl be an apps question.

This is what we need to strongly define, in my opinion

Cube design, writing administrative utilities for cubes, tuning, queries and suchlike (i.e. actually implementing the back end) would be core B.I. and on-topic for dba.se. There will be a grey area but that's what mods are for.

FWIW, this is one of the core reasons I think this should strongly be followed through on (the proposal to merge):

@jcolebrand I had a conversation about this with @JackDouglas the other day.

4:35 PM
> Now that so many enterprise RDBMS suites ship with some kind of BI solution in the box,
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I had a feeling :p but I don't get to see everything

Changes to the FAQ - Something like:

Database Administrators - Stack Exchange is for database professionals needing expert answers on all advanced database-related topics concerning either traditional SQL RDBMS or NoSQL databases.

Why are database developers' Q&A migrated to DBAs site

Although the site is called 'Database Administrators' there is a substantial grey area between database administration and development. Database professionals are well qualified to answer questions on these topics and this type of question is encouraged on dba.se.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells this was posted on the metaQ right? I saw it
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells bah, that's what the community and commenting are for. We deal with the very end of an issue.

Yes. It's in my answer The first question in my proposed FAQ wording addresses this topic.

Aye

Why are database developers' Q&A migrated to DBAs site

My draft wording attempts to clearly state the line where application development questions belong on SO and core B.I. systems questions belong on dba.se.

4:38 PM
It's the app usage in particular I'm the least keen on so far
I feel like we need a tad more about that, and then I think I'm ok, from all the other discussions that have taken place
Here's why I say that:

@jcolebrand App usage?

I know NOTHING about any BI Apps

You mean reporting tools?

sure why not
I write code in C# and TSQL to consume data.

Sorry, not sure what you mean by 'App usage'

4:39 PM
I've never in my life used an "OLAP cube"

Do you know what they do?

Nope
Ergo, how can I moderate on those topics?
If it's well defined, even for me, then everyone will be able to understand

We might need to have some mods with a background in B.I. Who are the actual mods on dba.se?

Me and Jack and MrDenny (who seems to be absent a bit)
Don't get me wrong, he's a great DBA, I just don't see him mod stuff that often

I've tried to avoid getting heavily involved in modding but I could make time to mod for dba.se.

4:42 PM
Yeah, you really could :p
@Aarthi what's the word on sharing our mod dashboard with our power users if only for a short time?

@jcolebrand uh.

pffft, community mod! hello :p

they haven't signed the mod agreement, so i'm going to err on the side of no :(

that's cool
this is why I ask before I do stuff, I trust your opine

Heh, my gut says no. However, I'm also skimming the BI merge meta post.
I know jco and Jack and I had kind of tossed the idea around a big before the holiday
but I wasn't sure what (if anything) the community had decided
Robert and I wanted to wait and see what DBA.se thought before we made any action
fwiw, Robert sees the value in it.

4:44 PM
I don't think a formal decision has been made yet, just some discussion.
Who's Robert?

Robert's my boss, and the head of the Community Team :)

@Aarthi but I had my surgery upcoming ;-)

@JackDouglas That question has been cross posted here :/

@Aarthi So here's my thoughts on that: The guy who wanted the BI proposal initially (back when dba hadn't quite gotten launched, iirc) wants it merged, and it's got some traction on the commitment to merge, but not enough. We here are fine with it, but we need one more mod at least who is more familiar with BI because it's new territory for us and we can't accurately mod it yet.
@MarkStoreySmith which one? nm .. daggum it

4:48 PM
@jcolebrand That was me :)

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells yeah, I know

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Ah ha. That makes for quite the compelling argument.
@jcolebrand Would you all also need a rename?

@Aarthi So that's what I would communicate to Robert in that regard.
@Aarthi oh absolutely, but nobody has a GOOD name
and that's reason 1 of 2 why I'm hesitating still
the other reason is needing a mod who knows the BI tools well enough to know where they would be better served

@jcolebrand That's the guts of the problem. I think everybody agrees that dba.se causes confusion but nobody can come up with a name that significantly improves on it.

4:50 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells well we know what we do and don't do :p so ...
dba's have never been good marketers
ok everybody, I must away for 15. I'll be back shortly.

There is a school of thought - which I have some sympathy for - that it's really a brand recognition issue and the problem with confusion will go away over time.

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells lordy, some amount of downvotes

@gbn Nobody else liked it, unfortunately. :(

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells well, we are advanced spreadsheet jocks, no?
and they key difference is that it describes what we deal with and not who we are
which, on second thought, is how most SE sites are named
the trilogy sites too
we're unique in that we're named after a role or group of people

gbn
@NickChammas Only the oracle types in my prejudiced world

Heapoverflow.com?

4:57 PM
and not a technology

@jcolebrand well I know what a cube is if that helps :-)

@JackDouglas I can spell SQL.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells names like that are not allowed for SE sites; Trilogy only, as a matter of history, can have names that do not obviously describe what they are about

"There is some long history on the naming stuff, currently no SE 2.0 site (except AskUbuntu) gets their own domain, and only very few a non-descriptive name."

@JackDouglas yep, that's what I was referring to

gbn
4:58 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I've seen CVs where they can't...

@gbn I don't think I've ever seen a CV where someone actually managed to mis-spell SQL.

gbn
I think some agency reformatting did it, not the poor candidate.

I could see "Database Technologies" working as a name - probably better than "Data Technologies"
Although "Technologies" is a bit of a weasel word.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells why do you prefer database over data?

gbn
I've seen some really bad CV's after agency scan/OCR/whatever

5:02 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells agreed; the result of compromising to come up with something agreeable

Again, it sounds a bit like the job title for a spreadsheet jock.
"Data Technologist"
"Database" is a bit more concrete and makes it explicit about what we're working with.

Although - granted - A reporting tool is not a database, I think the implications of the word do a better job of describing the content than "Data"

With the MS Certs the next step above DB Admin is Master which requires the DB Dev as well, so maybe something on the lines of Database Masters

5:10 PM
@MartinC a lots of us voted against "Database Professionals" as too pretentious

@Aarthi, @jcolebrand the BI merge can't be allowed to depend on a name change: including BI questions will not change the character of the site sufficiently to justify a name change on it's own and much as I'd like a different name anyway, meta says no (despite efforts to persuade).

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I have, "Sequel"

@MarkStoreySmith You meen misspelled SQL?

or am I totally wrong?
@MarkStoreySmith doh

5:19 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I've seen plenty of CVs from characters that have extensive "Sequel Server" experience

@JackDouglas I agree

@JackDouglas Pretty much right. I think the B.I. remit would go further into questions that might be regarded as development than 'traditional' dba.se.

@MarkStoreySmith and doh

But apart from that there's already quite a lot of overlap.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Do you have any interest in being a mod on dba.se after the merge?

5:22 PM
@gbn Shoot the lot of them!
@MartinC Have you tried getting in touch with Simon Sabin. He's got contacts all over the shop and posts the odd contract job on his blog. He was looking for people for Wonga.com tail end of last year IIRC

@NickChammas I think I can do it, at least as an interim solution. I do semi-regular searches on stackoverflow for B.I. questions to migrate here.

@MarkStoreySmith I've been called about Wonga a couple of times but I'm pretty sure Simon doesn't want me involved

@MartinC Keeping a good client to himself?

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells (take note @JackDouglas and @jcolebrand)

@MartinC Or have you had a punch up at a conference? :)

5:26 PM
@NickChammas interesting idea
@Aarthi can a pro-tem be appointed to ease a transition with a merge like this?
@NickChammas hey, we're unique because we are special :-)

@MarkStoreySmith We get on ok, I did to say to him that writing a SQLCLR function was beneath me (he had written it for JRJ for my project)

well that took a bit longer than I expected
38 mins ago, by Aarthi
Data Management and Business Intelligence?
@JackDouglas I think I agree with you here, but we already have an issue with "why does that belong on dba, I'm not a dba" so if we add BI, the name is going to contribute further.

@jcolebrand Still a bit weasel-wordish for my tastes.
Although I am nominally a "Business Intelligence Consultant" the term really is wanker-speak of the worst kind.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I know

@jcolebrand I'm actually not sure we do have "an issue" with that at all - the evidence is very slight

5:35 PM
@JackDouglas ok, I have an issue with it so I figure others do too :p

@JackDouglas +1 Insightful. I think it's acutally more a problem of brand recognition than anything else.

my evidence is all anecdotal and is just a matter of what I've heard people say in passing, nothing concrete

@jcolebrand There are meta questions where people have gotten confused about it. It does cause some confusion, but I think that would probably go away with time as more people become aware of the site.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Much as prog.se eh?
speaking of, are you on metaso?

Q: "Database Administrators" needs to die

Nick ChammasEvery few weeks another sharp poster asks: Why are you asking DBAs about source control? Why are you asking DBAs about performance? Why are you asking DBAs about database design or data warehousing? As a regular DBA.SE patron your response might be: "Because all of those topics are welcome on...

ConcernedOfTunbridgeWellsI do notice a similar phenomenon - often I'm asking quite obscure questions. Obscure questions will suffer from the combination ...

@jcolebrand yah, lots of links on there to evidence of brand/image problem, with good counter by BBrocka and a survey proposal that I would like to see go somewhere

These were a couple of meta posts I made when I was thinking about shortcomings of Stackoverflow when it came to getting B.I. questions answered.

Here's what I've been told from on high (aka from Robert):

But @JackDouglas I would admit you're right that we don't need to hinge the one on the other

5:47 PM
@Aarthi he is a man of few words!
@jcolebrand yay! :-)

1) We'll entertain site name changes...so long as it's not just slapping on BI onto the current title, haha. 2) Adding the mod could probably wait until the next election, but we're not opposed to adding one pro-tem. Mostly, Word of God says that y'all are probably overthinking it :P 3) Let us know when you make it Officialness and we'll email all the people who followed/committed to the BI proposal. :D

@Aarthi I'm willing to bet that Robert is well appraised of this but I want to ask it anyways: He does realize that we're not happy with the site name to begin with, right?

@jcolebrand Pretty much. He says come up with a good alternative and we'll discuss it to death and come back to y'all. :P

@Aarthi lol, we weren't discussing it to death enough? :p

@jcolebrand Yes.

@NickChammas that is a year old
we've got current grumblings aside from that
ok, I've got a luncheon appt in 7 minutes, and I'm pretty sure it's 10 away from here. bbiab

A bit more concrete.

@JackDouglas Little bit of both, I think; I linked him to the meta post, and he offered his Wise Words

@Aarthi ok, thanks for the info :-)

@JackDouglas Ha, I try.

@Aarthi Thanks
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells How do we tie analytics into that? Otherwise, BINGO.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells @JackDouglas meta.dba.stackexchange.com/questions/503/… is this going to be sufficient (notice the additional tag)
@Aarthi thanks! /waves

8:02 PM
@jcolebrand The question is a bit confusing now. It's got my preamble with a rough set of questions about the wording and two drafts of the FAQ wording by myself and @JackDouglas. It might be worth tossing the blurb about draft wording from the question itself and putting in some links to sample wordings in the answers.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Are you able to do that? I just wanted to get some idea about where to go, and I can add the red tags (which you can't, so I wanted to do that). I like the idea of drawing people to the original discussion tho

I suppose you could do sometning like:
'Database architecture, management and analytics'
Although 'analytics' is probably not a great word to use in the title.
@jcolebrand OK. I'll edit the question.
I guess analytics does a fair job of encompasing reporting, OLAP and business intelligence systems in general. Quite a lot of people still use SAS for this stuff.
I guess it really depends how much pride-of-place you want to give business intelligence topics in the site.

8:34 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells way too long, brah

@NickChammas What about its predecessor
'Database architecture and management

what about "database analysis and management"?
that's not really right tho, so I say strike that

No, not quite.

Architecturalysis ....

I think 'Database architecture and management' is better.

8:38 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells better; post it here for voting and stuff

Maybe we need to explicitly allude to B.I. in the title but it might not be strictly necessary.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells there's always the logo

Or a catch phrase:
"Bringing intelligence to the business since 2012"
:D

lol
I think a tag line would help
Welcome @user5952
What can we do you for?

"Not just grumpy old DBAs"?

8:40 PM
ooooh, @user5952 only has 1 rep and no Q/A on the sites, so no chat privileges till 20 rep.
But you're more than welcome to come back when you've arranged a little rep...
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells That may be our tagline, yes :p
get's people to ask "well what are you then?"

or maybe, to quote my rant on meta.dba:
"We don't just do backups and logs and shit."
btw, I noticed SO has a SQL Server chat room.

 SQL Server

Discussions specific to Microsoft's rdbms product - Sql Server...
that is mostly dead
so I invited its attendees here

@NickChammas good deal

perhaps @jcolebrand or @JackDouglas can get the SO mods to add perma-links from the SO db-related chat rooms to our site and this chat room
@jcolebrand you should star my message there

what about:
'Not just grumpy old dbas'
notjustgrumpydbas.stackexchange.com
:D

we can repeat for other SO db rooms that are dead, if you think it's appropriate
three other DB chat rooms on SO

last one seems be just a collection of links posted by a bot
the other two have decent activity

the last two are owned by Yojimbo who you can usually reach by pinging, he and I share a common frequent feed in chat.stackoverflow.com/rooms/642/node-js so ...

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells "all your database are belong to us"?

@gbn I like that one.

@jcolebrand so... extend invitation just to the MySQL chat room?

gbn
pwningyourdata.stackexchange.com

@gbn hahahhahaha

8:55 PM
@NickChammas no, you're more likely to get his attn if you @him, and that room has enough traffic to warrant finding him readily there

@gbn Makes it sound like a script kiddie site. Maybe that's better than sounding like spreadsheet jocks with a grandiose job title.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells matches our error page
@jcolebrand he owns the MySQL room too?

@NickChammas no, some other cat does
@NickChammas you know how to find out, right?
