I wonder what the message is.
HLL M BT FD M BTTR

Hmm...
BUETTR?
HEOLL -> HELLO.
BOT... EFED EM...
HELLO I AM BOT FEED ME BUTTER!

NOOOOO facepalm
The Community spirit can't send messages.
It's just a roomba for Stack Exchange sites.

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Then who, or what, sent the message?

-.(o.o).-

There is a ghost in Stack Exchange! RUN!!!

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Congratulations!

@VTCAKAVSMoACE ?
@wizzwizz4 not me, just a random kill in TF2.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ :-(
I hoped that Chrome might actually be gone, but...

4:05 PM
@wizzwizz4 ಠ_ಠ

@Upgoat Chrome isn't as... elegant as Firefox.

Firefox is slow and clunky tho

@Upgoat Only because Chrome changes the interrupt cycle to make itself seem fast.

I cleaned my disk! :D
From: 1.75 GB
To: 5.75 GB
Total weight dropped: ~4.00 GB

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 thats it?

4:11 PM
Yep, I just ran WinContig to defragment a bit of my drive.
Then I ran the Windows "Clean Disk" utility to start actually cleaning the disk.

@wizzwizz4 source?

Wise Disk Cleaner was then run once in "Quick Cleaning" mode, and once in "Deep Cleaning" mode, with all things from the list.
That's it.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Can't find it; it was in an article about Chrome using up battery.
Just a sec, it might be in my bookmarks...

@wizzwizz4 You still use bookmarks to keep interesting articles? :P

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 What should I use?

4:15 PM
My eighth Quest-for-Tetris blog post, about our data synchronizer: blog.phinotpi.com/2016/06/05/…

@PhiNotPi Eighth? Last time I checked you were on two!

@PhiNotPi do you self-host your blog?

@Upgoat Nope.

if not, what hosting provider do you use, mine keeps crashing due to out of ram ._.

@PhiNotPi You're not...

4:16 PM
@Upgoat I use the OpenShift platform-as-a-service by RedHat.

@wizzwizz4 Chrome uses battery exactly the same firefox does on my machine.
I tested it once.
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Please don't answer for other people.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ It definitely speeds it up on Windows, because there's an API for it.

@Upgoat if you find a good one, let me know please.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ @/all Please don't think I'm annoying.
Or you'd get in my ignore list.

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 We do don't.

4:17 PM
That's fine by me.
I think you are sometimes, but not always.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ digitalocean

:30140661 I have no clue which one is correct grammar, but okay.
@Upgoat for website?

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 No. Extra registration when I can just use small text-files.

@wizzwizz4 You don't have Google?

4:19 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ probably overkill for a plain website, but if you need a full-fledged server its porbably your best choice. OVH is also good i've heard

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I like OpenShift because their free plan is really nice.

Either way, you do hate web applications.

@PhiNotPi oh okay

@Upgoat google cloud really cheap

Does it need wordpress or anything?

4:20 PM
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Google =/ good.

@wizzwizz4 So you do hate web applications.

Google is often good.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ But it is not equal to good.

1gb of storage, no ads, no explicit bandwidth limit.

@wizzwizz4 wait, so you actually don't have a google account?

4:22 PM
@Maltysen Why would I?

@Maltysen google cloud isnt a VPS and is more of a cloud instance like EC2. They tend to seem cheap, but you almost definetly need your server on 24/7, and stuff like EC2 and google cloud adds up a lot with hidden charges >_>

Almost had a heart attack when I booted up my ancient Macbook to test something and it gave me the "no disk found" stop sign thing. I rebooted and it was fine, weird

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ It's often used for hosting generic webapps and stuff, but one of their options is to have wordpress pre-installed, which I chose.

@Upgoat isn't that what a vps is?
> A virtual private server (VPS) is a virtual machine sold as a service by an Internet hosting service. A VPS runs its own copy of an operating system, and customers have superuser-level access to that operating system instance, so they can install almost any software that runs on that OS.
@Upgoat no they don't
well ec2 does
that's why i switched to google
i'm currently paying $6/month
also, if you don't want a full vm, google also offers a crapton of other services, mainly appengine

@quartata Did it make clicking noises? :-O

4:25 PM
Anyone knows a good resource on creating game servers (software)

@Maltysen When I first read this, I read it as "appen-jine" instead of "app-engine"

@Bálint I am the resource
What are you trying to do?

@wizzwizz4 Gamedev SE (or SE in general) don't answer "what tools to use" questions

4:27 PM
@PhiNotPi So did I! :-/

@PhiNotPi lel

@quartata I just need a general resource about the architecture of such a program

@Maltysen what ram/cpu/etc, are you getting?

@Bálint Right, but what kind of game are you trying to make?

4:28 PM
@wizzwizz4 software recommendations

@quartata Small, online, room based games

@Upgoat idk exactly, but its enough to run a bunch of webservers simultaneously. lemme check

There's a Stack Exchange site for everything!

@wizzwizz4 Resource recommendations?

4:29 PM
@wizzwizz4 hardware recommendations >_>

@Bálint use Node and WebSocksts to make it :D

@Upgoat I got that far

:D

@Bálint Area 51?

@wizzwizz4 Yeah, I just had the idea, to propose a site like that

4:30 PM
@Bálint All right. That usually means the person who created the lobby hosts and the other players connect to that person.

@Bálint If the proposal is successful, you might just join the ranks of mods!

I kinda need more details though :P
If it's just Scrabble or something the technology can be very simple

@wizzwizz4 There's only website and book recommendations

@wizzwizz4 halp, how becum mod, i tri fo thirtee wek an no mod

@quartata Kind of like those .io games
@Upgoat try to juic it

4:31 PM
i put mod in juicr an suspend

@Bálint I've never played Agario but that usually means a long-running server with lots and lots of players right?

@Upgoat Ooh, that sounds fun! Can I help?

So it's not a lobby-based thing

@Upgoat u must win elekshun

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 i tri but no voet
peple haet gaot

4:32 PM
@quartata It is, there are multiple "rooms" with random selection

@Bálint Right, but the rooms aren't temporary.

That's why it's hard to get in the same game with your friend
No, there aren't
But I think, they're dynamic
1
Resource recommendations

Proposed Q&A site for people looking for viable resources

Currently in definition.

Yeah, the .io games I've seen usually have something like 16 players or so at max.

@El'endiaStarman Ah, OK.

@Upgoat Me no haet gaot?

4:34 PM
@Upgoat k, i have 1 vcpu (no problem, i'm running at 20% usage), and .6 gigs memory(which is also fine at 60% usage), i pay <10% for bandwidth usage

@El'endiaStarman slither.io has 32

Ahh, okay. I guessed it was a power of 2.

@wizzwizz4 wuold u voet fer gaot in elekshin?

@Upgoat Yes.

:D

4:34 PM
Fair warning this will be incredibly painful in JS but here goes

Then there are the games I don't know, because they're very new
like diep.o

@quartata ಠ_ಠ

@Upgoat Let it go, there are people, who underestimates the power of the JS

So you're going to have a master server that stores a list of PIDs of slave processes for each "room"

3 followers

4:36 PM
@Bálint You should probably just get started by getting a WS server running

The master server will communicate with each slave via a pipe

@Upgoat I got that too

@Bálint okay, so clients able to connect?

Clients will connect to the master server and request server info for each slave
Then the user will pick one

@Upgoat Yes, it's not that hard trough Node

4:37 PM
@Maltysen for the google cloud website hosting?

I don't know which example question to ask on the Resource Recs proposal. :/

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ yeah

cool
@wizzwizz4 image not found

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ its not website hosting btw, its they give you a vm

4:37 PM
you need to login to see that, and fuck no
@Maltysen okay

The master server will then put the user's information in a hashmap of some sort where the value is the PID of the slave they're playing on
Then the master will relay any messages to the slave via the pipe

@Maltysen so you have to setup the DNS to point to the vm?

@Bálint okay, now you should probably create a class for each client, storing their info. Keep those in a Map(). When a client wants to connect, you send them back the Map()

The slave will have an array of entities or something and every tick send a snapshot of the game state back to the master server
the master server will then propagate it to the clients
The clients will then use spline interpolation of some sort to make the transition between the past and the new state

@wizzwizz4 @zʏᴀʙiɴ101 Thanks for following

4:39 PM

have fun doing this with Node

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ yeah, they give you an external ip address for it, and you have to get your own domain and setup dns(or use their bajillion character long random subdomain)

@quartata it's probably the easiest to do in node
@Bálint I followed too :3

@Bálint That image will link to the proposal. Please star it!

@Upgoat Thanks

4:40 PM
@Maltysen okay.

@Upgoat haven't finished

@Upgoat @Bálint i reccommend python. not only does it have great ws support, but it also lets you do subproccesses really easily

So this will work fine but you'll probably notice that players who are "behind in time" will be at a disadvantage when trying to swallow other people or whatever

@Maltysen ew no Python code is unreadable

@quartata I'm not creating an agario clone though

4:41 PM
You need something called lag compensation

@Maltysen What DNS server hoster person do you use?

@Upgoat Python is actually really powerful. I ♥ Python.

@Maltysen Yeah, but then I would need to learn a new language

@PhiNotPi noice blog post

And you know, Phyton

4:41 PM
@Bálint IMO it's worth it.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ thanks!

You should really probably do this in C++ actually

@wizzwizz4 sure it's easy to do something in, but that doesn't mean it's good.

Not for big projects.

4:42 PM
@quartata I do this in Node.js

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ C++ is the big project language

For a game I suggest c#?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ fuck no

Because you know, why not

@quartata I was saying not python.

4:42 PM
@quartata Actually yes.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Oh, OK.

@quartata brb learning c-shapr

@quartata I hate C# too,
I could count the games made in C# in one of my hands

C# three is even worse

4:43 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ uhhhh, some really shady site that gives you free domain names, but only for a year it was like dot.tk or something

@Upgoat halp, how jiuc pifon, i tri fo thirtee wek an no poysn

@Maltysen dot.tk
Yes
And there's a couple more actually

@wizzwizz4 juic chedr, it has lot uv juic

@Maltysen oh used that

@Bálint anyways have fun tell me if you need anything else

@Upgoat it onli has lot uv chees

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ there used to be a not-as-shady free domain one IIRC .tv or something, but it doesn't exist anymore

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 bu u can juic chez u uz gr8r

@Maltysen do you use a blog format thingy or direct html?

@Upgoat Ah.

4:45 PM
@Upgoat i tri get poysn, no chedr jiuc

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ i'm not using it for a blog. i'm actually running actual projects there, like brainfreeze.tk, and a few other things that i'm experimenting on

Here, let's vote

Someone help. I wandered into TNB at this time of day again.

@Maltysen pls link teh wubsite?
or no, PII and shit

4:46 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ what website?

the one you host with google and dot.tk

@Geobits ;_; y u liek eat gaot but no avocad

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ it was that game that i showed you guys earlier: brainfreeze.tk

4:47 PM
@Geobits explain to @Bálint the glory of java.

I think the view counter for my blog broke when I made everything phinotpi.com

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ won't fit into a single chat message

@Maltysen o_O you own that?
10/10
@Upgoat he can use multiple

@PhiNotPi Make phinotpi.xyz a redirect page.

@Maltysen brb trying to sql inject

4:48 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ yeah

10/10 fun game

@Upgoat lel doesn't use sql
everything is done in memcache

@wizzwizz4 ... click the link

@wizzwizz4 Is it not already?

it is
ninjuic'd

4:49 PM
@PhiNotPi Huh.

Pls join brainfreeze game, ID is: '); DROP TABLE Games; --

@Upgoat how does one override the toString property of a class?

@Upgoat Invalid.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ HAI

@Upgoat it only allows numeric ids

4:50 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ like this:

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ HAI

The id is an INTEGER.

class avocad {
    toString() { return "tri fo thritee minut but no juic" }
}

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 well, it can be a float

that's what I thought :/ then something else is wrong

@Maltysen But the field can't.

join game id 123, i tri xss

pls halp i too meta

Okay. IWLAM!

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 nvm

4:51 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ

@Upgoat start it

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 i don't know how my own game works

idk how game i broked

@Phi also try Bitly, the best URL shortener that has statistics and custom suffixes.

you fucked up

who made the game?
@Upgoat want me to clear the server

@Maltysen yes pls

So you can have bit.ly/PhiNotPiSE for your SE profile, bit.ly/PhiNotPi for your blog, bit.ly/golqft for the quest for Tetris, ...

4:53 PM
k server cleared, everyone reload

I've never played this.

@PhiNotPi Brain Freeze is a multiplayer game where you have to spot the common number or letter between two lists, then press that key on your keyboard.
It's harder than it sounds.

I'm gonna lose badly.

> How to Play?

Brain Freeze is a multiplayer game where you have to spot the common number or letter between two lists, then press that key on your keyboard. Correct answers award 10 points, and wrong answers make you lose 5. Sounds easy, right?
Well this game may be simple, but its anything but easy. With only 3:00 and racing against other people, its actually very hard. You'll see. Good luck!

guys, brb making a logo

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I'm already playing
When does the game start?

@Bálint no, that's a username

@Bálint when the guy made it decides to start it
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ o_O

4:56 PM
And who is the guy, who made it currently?

when are we starting?

@Maltysen ^

@Bálint I wasn't the one who made the game

Then who was?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Where's the brain stem? The brain stem is a major part of the central nervous system which, put simply, makes decisions while the rest of the brain is still thinking.

4:58 PM
it started now

@Upgoat how do you export a class as the only export in node? e.g. const c = require("thing"); should make c a class
@wizzwizz4 does that brain look like it's making decisions?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ are you using babel? :3

no, node
> export in node

;_;
