Hello :D
@ParanoidPanda Hi, many things happened. :( , Nvidia, touchpad, wifi
@cl-netbox 361 or 364 ?
Hi :D
@ParanoidPanda nice, you came back ! :D

user136984
@SeverusTux: Wifi? What happened with the wifi (I don't have wifi drivers compatible with Ubuntu so I wouldn't know)? :D

It was disconnecting often, Only restarting was the solutions

Ah. That's why you are so paranoid @ParanoidPanda, you don't have all that nice electromagnetic radiation to sooth the mind and make you feel safe :P

@SeverusTux what do you wanna know ?

which is the best?
for unity
@cl-netbox

3:09 PM
@SeverusTux I have 361 from ubuntu repos installed - works without any issues ! :)

ah... will dist-upgrade upgrade it??

@SeverusTux when there is a new 361 version tested and made available in the repos ... yes :)

@cl-netbox which do you suggest ? Default repos or graphics-drivers/ppa ?

@SeverusTux when you decide for 361 : default ubuntu repos because otherwise you have a mixture of newer and older packages - example : nvidia-settings

3:23 PM
@Fabby <sub>rawr</sub>

@Nathan: Oh dear... I'm looking at this Debian packaging documentation and it's all too much... Is it really as hard and complicated as they make out in their huge amount of documentation? I mean, how do you cope? Do you just read it all and have a go?

@ParanoidPanda I recommend starting with the ubuntu packaging guide personally
then using the debian stuff to supplement. Have you tested your script on debian though? You first need to make sure it will even work ;)
(probably will, but depending on the exact details you might be using something ubuntu specific, especially if it has to do with updates.)

@Videonauth yeah that one. Except I recommend just starting from the beginning and reading the whole thing. It's not near as long as Debian's stuff.

yep
i have a few others as well, meanwhile i use checkinstall for making deb files but thats a tricky one

@Seth Is it correct behaviour that my own downvote on an answer gives me the ability to vote to delete it (20k privilege), but my own NAA flag does not?

@ByteCommander yeah

But why?
(btw, this is the NAA: askubuntu.com/a/779506/367990)

@Seth No. any py3 goes

hmm. These errors are so weird.
@ByteCommander because an NAA flag doesn't downvote it?

5:07 PM
I think the idea is, if you're willing to lose 1 rep and cast a downvote, then it's probably bad. But anyone can cast an NAA flag on anything.

I thought I can cast delete votes on answers in the LQ queue - and my NAA flag takes it there.

I am in the process of installing Ubuntu 16.04. Why can't I choose which drive to install to? I got an SSD, which I've previously used for storage, that I would like to install Ubuntu on with LVM LUKS, but the installer defaults to my Windows drive. Any way to get around this?

a naa still qulafies as "This answer is not useful", so give it a downvote as well

@ByteCommander yeah that should work
@bitcasual use "something else".

@Seth alright, so how to I set it up in there? I don't know anything about journaling systems and such

5:16 PM
@bitcasual Is the SSD currently blank?

Q: How to use manual partitioning during installation?

DanatelaI'd like to see the full How-To on how to use manual partitioning during Ubuntu installation. I'd like to cover such situations: If you ...

@Seth Na its filled with crap. Need to get rid of it all
@Seth Thanks

Oh ok.
@bitcasual are you on a live session right now?

@Seth Yes, typing this on my phone though

@bitcasual If you pick "try ubuntu without installing" you can run the installer and Firefox at the same time.
Might make this easier.

@Seth alright thanks

5:33 PM
@Seth Bless mate. Working now.

great!

Did Ubuntu plymouth got changed ?? coz while doing dist-upgrade, Its downloading these : plymouth plymouth-label plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text

reboot and see!
well I figured out the one issue with my snap. But now I'm left with a completely different issue.. lol.
My packaging escapades are... weird.

1 hour later…
7:34 PM
@Seth ah, what is the hangup now?
you are blazing a trail on a new frontier ;)

@Mateo I'm.. not quite sure.

as it sounds right now the past day it seems more he sets his computer ablaze soon ;)

It has something to do with how distutils works and how imports work in python3.
but I can't quite figure out what the problem is.

did you see the dev mode, where you run it unconfined - and it alertes you to all things it uses

@Mateo but it does feel like that xD
@Videonauth hehe, almost.
@Mateo yep! but the only works once I get a working snap lol

7:39 PM
ah...
I created a simple hello world python3 project, using distutils. High / Fix Released

oh hey. Lemme look.
I'm afraid my problem is very specific to the app I'm trying to build, but maybe not.

still what i dont get is how this local user based installation and still being able to run one update to keep the machine up to dayte will work out together

@Videonauth in reference to snaps?

@Seth yes

in fresh classic setup just installing snapcraft wont pull in a compiler, so even the most simple C program does not compile... I suggest that for the ubuntu package we make this more convenient by depending on build-essential Thanks!

Q: snapcraft snap failing because python modules are missing

SethI'm attempting to learn something of snap desktop packaging by repackaging unity-tweak-tool as a snap. @Mateo haha :P
latest error is here paste.ubuntu.com/16847749 if anyone is interested.
but why I don't know.

oh nice. This might be the issue right here:
> There are of course, plenty of caveats. Probably the main one is that Python cannot import extension modules directly from the zip, because the dlopen() function call only takes a file system path.

hm, hopefully he has a few tricks you can use
@seth are you trying to snap unity tweak tool?

7:53 PM
yup.

there's someone in #snappy named "askubuntu"

@Mateo this one guy today is still pi**ed i guess

8:43 PM
what's this?

user136984
@Seth Well, do /var/run/reboot-required and /var/run/reboot-required.pkg function the same on Debian as they do on Ubuntu?

@ParanoidPanda I don't know.
You will need to test that.

user136984
Well, do to my dkms issue I don't have the capabilities for VMs at the moment so that is going to be somewhat difficult... I guess I'm going to have to investigate a fresh install.

@ParanoidPanda What DKMS issues?
are you using secureboot?

user136984

Q: dkms problem with VirtualBox kernel registration after 15.10 to 16.04 upgrade

Paranoid PandaAfter upgrading an Ubuntu GNOME 15.10 machine to 16.04 I have encountered some problems with my VirtualBox and dkms installation. It seems that during the upgrade dkms had some problems registering the old kernel (4.2) going and the new one coming (4.4)... So now I am unable to run VirtualBox VMs...

user136984
And yes, I am using secure boot. But don't think that will be related to this...

yeah it is. I just went through this yesterday.
The kernel modules aren't signed, so secureboot won't let them start.
pre-16.04 they didn't enforce the signing.

user136984
Oh... So what do I do about this then?

Q: Could not load 'vboxdrv' after upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04

Sign them yourself.

user136984
Shouldn't they be signed by whoever made them?

8:53 PM
that'd be preferable, but they weren't so..

user136984
Will they be in future do you know? Because they really should be...

I have no idea. But they haven't been signing them before, and you still used it ;)

user136984
Well, I didn't know...

user136984
Are there any good VM applications which you know of that either don't have such kernel modules or do sign them?

user136984
I will probably file a bug report about this with VBox though...

8:57 PM
No idea. But if you verify the VBox download you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
@ParanoidPanda that sounds like a good idea.

user136984
I guess all distros using this version of the kernel or later will be affected too...

user136984
So hopefully they will sign them...

user136984
Now, the question is, how do I file a bug report? :D

user136984
And, do you think that I should mark my question as a duplicate of that other one?

@Zacharee1 ᴿᵒᵃʳ

user136984
9:04 PM
@Seth: It's ridiculous, to sign up to Oracle you have to give them your home address and where you work and everything... And you can't file a bug report without an account! >:{

@ParanoidPanda I don't having any prob with signed modules running newest vbox on a 16.04 fresh install. Maybe you just need to uninstall vbox and re-install the latest version after upgrade. (Apologies if suggestion was made earlier)

user136984
@chaskes: Nope, already tried that, didn't work...

Ok.

@ParanoidPanda No one ever said Oracle was nice.

How is this a valid patent?
^--- that has got to be the dumbest picture I've seen in a while

9:14 PM
it's also the smallest.

The complexity of the idea or of the drawing required to illustrate it is not what makes it patentable.

btw @NathanOsman, are you familiar with the distutils system for python?

Somewhat.

because I am extremely confused right now and I have no idea what to do

user136984
Right, so I can't file a bug report, and I can't use VBox, so I'm going to have to find another VM program...

9:18 PM
you won't use vbox.

@ParanoidPanda There's qemu but it's quite difficult to use.
@Seth What's the problem?

well, you have to registaer to download vmware player, so that's out
qemu isn't hard once you find the manual.

anyway. I'm trying to figure out what is causing my snap to fail, so I am trying a clean install of UTT in a VM, but when I run setup.py it fails because the root variable is None. It's never defined anywhere at all (source github.com/Seth-Johnson/unity-tweak-tool/blob/master/setup.py). Which leads me to wonder if it is some kind of build something from distutils

but you won't have the proprietary niceties like, usb, shared files, etc

the package installs fine if I install through apt, which runs setup.py so it has to work somehow.

9:20 PM
On second thought, @chaskes is right. qemu is fairly easy to use with KVM.
Lemme give it a shot.

user136984
@Nathan: How do I install KVM?

I haven't used it directly in a while, but I had trouble creating the virtual hd and running with the right memory -- until I decided to rtfm. Then it was easy.

It isn't until you want to emulate an ARM board that qemu becomes insanely difficult.

user136984
Is there a GUI for it or is it just a CLI tool?

9:26 PM
qemu is cli. I think the gui's are called things like virtualbox

huh, works allright
upload and download now

@Seth this error?
TypeError: unsupported operand type(s) for +: 'NoneType' and 'str'

yup

Okay.

you'll notice that root isn't actually defined anywhere, just used.
but the package manager installs it fine..

9:32 PM
I'm guessing it has something to do with a local (prefixed) install vs. a global one...
...but I'm not 100% sure yet. Still digging...
So apparently, it is None by default (root).
So the packaging for UTT is wrong to assume it has a valid value.

Okay, well that is something I can fix. Where did you find this out?
I've been googling it but I could not find anything.

@NathanOsman ahhh, yes. Exactly. That is probably it.

Had to consult the source.

But how it determined it was a local install vs global I don't know.
@NathanOsman oh. haha.

9:37 PM
I'm not terribly familiar with distutils internals but I think it's safe to say we've found the problem.

Agreed.
I'm not going to have time to dig into that for a few months though. Shoot :/

Mind if I file a bug?

Maybe you can click "this bug affects me".

yup.
@NathanOsman mind if I ask you one more thing?

9:47 PM
Sure.

I hate to keep asking you things, but you are the only person that is consistently helpful..

Well, thank you :)

I'm attempting to snap unity-tweak-tool, but snap build keeps failing with this error:
 Installing collected packages: unity-tweak-tool
  Running setup.py install for unity-tweak-tool ... error
    Complete output from command /home/sethj/projects/snappy-testing/parts/unity-tweak-tool/install/usr/bin/python3 -u -c "import setuptools, tokenize;__file__='/tmp/pip-s27zlt4t-build/setup.py';exec(compile(getattr(tokenize, 'open', open)(__file__).read().replace('\r\n', '\n'), __file__, 'exec'))" install --record /tmp/pip-9z_5y36w-record/install-record.txt --single-version-externally-managed --compile --home=/tmp/tmp6l43voxy:
the key part for now being: ERROR: Python module values not found.
The only part of the source where values is imported is here github.com/Seth-Johnson/unity-tweak-tool/blob/stable/…, but I don't have any idea why it fails in the snap when it works just fine otherwise.

Hmm...

Note that it also fails when I attempt to reproduce the import in the interpreter, but UTT still installs and runs fine otherwise..

9:51 PM
It doesn't even use the import.
What happens if you remove the line that imports values?
Also, the print line in this file is missing parenthesis.
print context.CurrentProfile.Name
...should be...
print(context.CurrentProfile.Name)

@NathanOsman lemme try.
@NathanOsman yeah I know. That's the next thing to fix :P
oh that's weird. The error just goes away @NathanOsman
the snap still doesn't build because of the --single-version-externally-managed part, but that's a bug in snapcraft. Weeeeeeiird.
why does it pick on that one import I wonder?
there are other relative imports similar to it..
oh wait, wait.
> ERROR: Python module compizconfig not found
That happens after I fixed the syntax error.

@Seth are you having fun?

It's got to be something related to relative imports..
@Zacharee1 no.

really? It sounds like it
>:)

but I'm not hating it either.

10:00 PM
It sounds like you really really enjoy how much progress you're making and how available the documentation is

oh I definitely like the progress. I've made leaps since yesterday.

From one error to the next
It'll be 2050 and you'll finally have removed all the errors :p

11:23 PM
@James you won't have to worry about which carriers give security updates anymore if this works ^^
@Seth it looks like Android N is going to have background security updates
> The software updates will now happen in the background, the same way they happen for Chrome. In other words, you don't need to see those "Android is upgrading" prompts anymore. Individual OEMs will still need to opt-in to updates, but if you're on a Nexus device, your updates will happen more seamlessly than before.

you know what fun is ? when naa's become accepted answers like here askubuntu.com/a/779563/522934

that's a first afaik

lol
Let's dig through the accepted answers to see if we can find more :DDDDD

yet when it's a good answer and you beg the OP to accept, they still don't

11:38 PM
Well some people just ask, get an answer and leave
Some people don't get an answer after 30 minutes, so they ask again
which is just stupid; it's not acceptable on forums, so why would it be on Q&As, which have more strict policies?
definitely not opinion-based. It's either being developed or it isn't

I don't see that as OT
If OT is only things not used solely in Ubuntu, we're back to defining not OT as only Unity settings. ;)

That wasn't my point really
I was trying to say that if the fate of the development of a certain piece of software is going to be on-topic, it should be a piece of software made by an official Ubuntu developer (Canonical?).
That program really has nothing to do with Ubuntu specifically; sure it runs on Ubuntu, but it was made for KDE; it runs on every Linux distro that can run KDE

Point taken, it's not only canonical software. It's anything used within Ubuntu.
Then so is software made for xfce

If the question was about getting the thing to work, it'd be fine
But the question is asking about what happened to the project, which doesn't involve Ubuntu at all (unless Canonical sued them or something)

I've got 3 confirmations Ask Ubuntu is now unblocked in Saudi Arabia. Thanks for all the user reports!

11:49 PM
I doubt the developer had only Ubuntu in mind (if s/he was even thinking about Linux) when s/he decided to stop developing, or forgot about the project
@StackExchange Yay :D

That doesn't change my view.

But the fate of a project that seems to be made with pretty much every Linux distro in mind doesn't seem on-topic at all

I'm not trying to convince you. Just telling you how I read the description of on/off topic.

one more thing :p
He's asking about the product. The product isn't an Ubuntu feature, it's 3rd party. He might as well be asking what happened to retawq.
Sure it probably works on Ubuntu, but it was made for pretty much any UNIX-based system
Oh, it's not even only for KDE: "and other desktops in the *nix world"
It's literally for any GUI in any UNIX-based OS

So those questions would be on topic as well. Otherwise, we would have to strike out 85% of the site (along with the rep earned from those questions). Stridently declaring all these questions OT hurts all of us, Ubuntu users, and would force to go get yelled at on Unix & Linux for questions they deem too simple.
Nothing personal here, it's just how I see this.

11:57 PM
I've never seen a question asking about the fate of a generic program not specifically developed for even Linux

I'm not trying to change your mind. Just sharing my view. If someone agrees, great. If not, I'm not going to argue.

I want to know what's formed your opinion though
It doesn't seem like you understand mine

The description of on/off topic, guidance from mods who agree (unfortunately, not all mods do), and almost 4 years of hanging around here.
I understand you point (I believe). I just strongly disagree.
Again, nothing personal.
