How does one get to create characters in LaTeX? All I know is that \mkernare involved somehow, but I can't find a guide on it. I don't even know what its name is.

1:45 AM
@yo' @barbarabeeton Night cache in the woods. It was snowing this morning (i guess this was April's fool prank sent fro heaven) and everything was swamped and cold. Very cold. The hunt was quite nice, despite the cold, and we were able to log the cache.

8 hours later…
9:46 AM
@Johannes_B: And the O.P. is apparently someone that piles one request after one, each time more unclear than the previous one. I've stopped to support this

@ChristianHupfer Aren't you used to this kind of questions?

@Johannes_B Yes, but I change only after the first request and ignore the next one, with a clear message

@ChristianHupfer Don't we have a meta Q about follow-ups?

@Johannes_B Meta has anything ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Why is twocolumn a design flaw?

9:53 AM
@Johannes_B Because it's not restorable on the same page to a onecolumn approach without pagebreak. And the most important information should be centred across the full width (ok, this a personal opinion) ... \begin{figure*}...\end{figure*} does not help here

@ChristianHupfer Well, LaTeX cannot do anything ;-)
@DavidCarlisle Did you get an alert message from the above line and dropped into chat immediately?

@Johannes_B: Well, I don't say that twocolumn is bad in general. It's quite good, but I wouldn't use it for a CV

@Johannes_B I see all

@ChristianHupfer The maintainer saw it fitting and so he used it. I really don't care. Not pleased with the template? Search for another one.
@DavidCarlisle :-)

@Kurzd mkern is a space not a character, mostly characters are made in fonts not in tex macros, although you can fake a few things by overprinting one character over another (which may possibly involve mkern)

9:57 AM
@Johannes_B The O.P. want's to have the rubbish -- he shall get rubbish (well, a little bit cleaned up ;-)

@ChristianHupfer The OP also wants some alignment, and maybe all instances of his name in publications underlined bold and red.

@Johannes_B Well, as I said: The O.P. requested one thing after another one. I stopped after making the Profile heading centred. Alignment? Aligned to what? Let's ask the O.P. ... Oh no, he wasn't online for two or three days -- what a pity!

@ChristianHupfer That box is sticking out compared to the second column.

@Johannes_B You can handle it, I won't touch that again

@ChristianHupfer Which question?

10:11 AM
By the way, is it safe to update 'all' from TeXLive or do I run into certain issues concerning a certain package ( I don't want to say that I mean l3kernel here )
Ooops ;-)

@ChristianHupfer safe enough

@DavidCarlisle Hmm.... Can I trust you? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer naturally. trust me, but if it does go wrong, blame J...

@DavidCarlisle ....ohannes_B ? ;-)

10:20 AM
Now, in order for that entry about colors to be really useful, can somebody please add all colors available by package xcolor?--Johannes Bo (discuss • contribs) 10:18, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
@Johannes_B: All colours? Are you kidding? :D

@ChristianHupfer No, i want to see them all. Along with images of the colors. If soebody isn't able to open up a simple pdf document and look at the freaking pdf he should have wikibook to rely on.

Just make a screenshot of the lists in xcolor.pdf?

*"To keep it simple, only package xcolor is addressed. Following are the most common options, which should be given as the optional argument when loading the documentclass.

dvipsnames, svgnames and x11names load a set of predefined colors. Have a look at the xcolor manual to find out which colors are available exactly."*

Hi all.

@ChristianHupfer I don't know if you got the sarcasm ;-)
@manucpp Hi :-)

10:26 AM
just a quick question...
I understand that you cannot have a figure inside a minipage. But I want the rigidity of a minipage and a facility to place two images side by side.
:(
Where should I look?

@manucpp You don't need a figure environment at all. Just use \includegraphics.

@manucpp Huh? \includegraphics does not work in minipage? @DavidCarlisle, did you break something? ;-)

two includegraphics of half width inside a minipage of linewidth?
Do I understand it right?

^^^^ It's good that at least one of the regulars on this site is a natural linguist
@manucpp you don't need the minipage actually.

10:28 AM
:-o
me happy. So just two includegraphics of half linewidth?

@manucpp Perhaps 0.45\linewidth

nice!! and the captions?
get rid of them?

@manucpp \includegraphics are positioned exactly like X if you do XX they appear together, if you do X X they have a small gap, and may have a linebreak

@manucpp Do you need captions at all? If yes, then use \captionof{figure}{My nice caption} (requires the --- tata --- caption package ;-)

sorry for pushing :P
but is it possible to have independent captions for each sub-figures?
:P

10:31 AM
There should be a sound available in chat, if an important message is announced ... a tata sound ;-)

lol...

@manucpp yes, use two minipages in that case with an image and caption in each

let me plug in my earphones for the tata sound

I've to go for a while. See you later

@manucpp if you use two \caption then you get figure 1 and figure 2 side by side, if you want figure 1a and figure 2a with the possiblility of also having a caption for figure 1 which covers both, then look to the subfigure or subcaption packages

10:35 AM
nice!! I will look at the documentation for subfigure and subcaption. Thank you everyone!

@DavidCarlisle Amateur!

@egreg Posso essere un dilettante, ma devo supporto professionale.

@DavidCarlisle Ungrammatical, sorry. :P

@manucpp subfigure is deprecated. subcaption recommended.

oh...ok
thanks @Johannes_B

10:50 AM
Good Saturday to all! :)

Also what is the difference between \label{somelabel} and \label{fig:somelabel)?

@manucpp the identifier. :)

oh, I get it. So even if labels are same, the identifier will keep them different?

@manucpp I don't get it. How labels are the same if identifiers are different? :)

@manucpp The argument to \label is an arbitrary string of ASCII characters. It's good to use a convention whereby the label has a prefix that identifies what it refers to, but it's not enforced.

10:58 AM
@manucpp you make it sound more complicated than it is. : has no significance somelabel and fig:somelabel are different in the same way as somelabel and xxxxx are different

as in \label{somelabel} can reference to a section and \label{fig:somelabel} can reference a figure or something

@manucpp but you could also say: as in \label{somelabel} can reference to a section and \label{somelabel2} can reference a figure or something

Thanks @egreg and @DavidCarlisle. It helps make a lot clearer. Sorry to have confused you all.
is it necessary to use subcaption inside a figure environment?
e.g. \caption can be replaced by \captionof{figure}{some caption} outside the figure environment. Should something of this sort can be used with subcaption?

@manucpp \captionof{subfigure}{You caption here}

11:18 AM
Eureka!!! Thank you all

Q: Recursive Stern-Brocot tree definition

LayusI am trying to build a Stern-Brocot tree (enumeration of rationals). The result is nearly acceptable, but I am still dissatisfied with the following points. The edge from the parents goes to the middle of the child node, not the upper border. The command does not (re)evaluate it's arguments at...

I swear I read Broccoli. :)

11:47 AM
eeek ... Broccoli
@Johannes_B: Here, some KOMA quirk for you ;-)

Q: Nesting listof* to achieve this appendices list?

AdvaniumI'd like to create a list of appendices like the one shown here: I know I can print the different lists with the listof* macros, but I have not the slightes clue how I would add the stand-alone entries for the glossary and the statement of authorship to the list. Basically, what I'm trying to...

@ChristianHupfer Not a KOMA question. Uses tocbibind and several others that kick KOMA in the butt.
Außerdem fahr ich jetzt inn Garten zum Grillen. :-p

@Johannes_B Really? :D That's what I told the O.P. too. ;-)
@Johannes_B Schon wieder Grillen?

Hello, I have a question regarding make a tikz template

@ChristianHupfer Jep.
Gotta go, bye

Well, I'm pretty new to this, not even sure whether I'm using the right dictionary for that. Thing that I want to accomplish is to reuse two figures set relatively one to each other multiple times. What should be the right way for that? ;p

11:53 AM
ooh a cat in a suit!

Hi!

12:18 PM
@Johannes_B -- congrats on logging the cache! we're expecting snow here, but not until tonight. (just because the calendar says it's spring doesn't mean the weather gods agree.) hope you were able to come home to some nice hot chocolate.

12:29 PM
drat! i just did it again! at the bottom right of my browser window, there's a scroll-down arrow. right next to it is the new button for "mobile". and i'm getting much too good at hitting "mobile", which fouls up everything. (using firefox on windows, if that makes a difference.) does anyone else have this problem, or am i just super-clumsy? (if enough other people have the problem, i'm going to ask to have the location of the "mobile" button changed.)

@Johannes_B Zu viel Fleisch, vermutlich
@shookees You want the same figure/graphics file use multiple times throughout the document?

@PauloCereda Still too early for lunch!

yo'
@barbarabeeton found a cache today, some 300 meters down the creek from its expected location :)

@barbarabeeton I never use that down arrow, I either scroll using the scrollbar or more often just using page up/down keys

@yo' -- i hope you were a good scout, and restored it to its designated location. (oh, my! this seems a good weekend to go geocaching.)
@DavidCarlisle -- i usually do that, but sometimes the up/down keys get "frozen out", so there isn't any alternative. (on macbook, the up/down keys never work; have to use the scroll-down arrow.)

@PauloCereda “Ossobuchi” for me. :)

@ChristianHupfer yes, well currently just in the same beamer slide :p

@egreg oooooh me want!

@egreg Don't feed the Duck ;-)

@ChristianHupfer oy
I will create a TeX-related command line tool named broccoli just to enrage people. :)

12:54 PM
@PauloCereda And what will we see on the command line then? Does it say broccoli?

@ChristianHupfer I will think of the semantics later on. :)

@PauloCereda: Just like the yes command, in case we have to answer another command line tool that requires broccoli as an input? ;-)
@PauloCereda Ah, Microsoft Software Design Principles :D
@PauloCereda Broccoli of the Yard

@ChristianHupfer :)

1:22 PM
@PauloCereda I won't eat this broccoli -- it's awful scratched

@ChristianHupfer I'm sure @PauloCereda's mum broccoli are delicious.

@egreg I am sure that @PauloCereda will get all the Broccoli he needs -- I won't demand a dish of it ;-)

1:46 PM
@egreg yaaaay!
When I host TUG, I will provide broccolis for everybody! :)

@PauloCereda I've no time at that scheduled event :-P

@PauloCereda According to the dictionary, also “broccoli” is used in English as a mass noun. They lose the possibility of calling “broccolo” anybody. ;-)

@egreg LOL
Look at them broccolises. :)
Where's @AlanMunn to help us with vegetable-linguistic-related issues? :)

2:02 PM
@PauloCereda rule 1 of borrowed Italian plurals: they have no Italian singular. Whether they end up as count (with a regular English plural) like cannoli, zucchini, panini or mass nouns like spaghetti, broccoli probably depends on their conceptual categorization.

@AlanMunn Oh my!

2:13 PM
@AlanMunn Eating a real Sicilian cannolo is a mystic experience, although it has quite an impact on one's girth. Eating a cannoli probably doubles that impact on psychological grounds.

@egreg -- but can you stop with just one cannolo?

@barbarabeeton You should. :)

@egreg -- how tempting! especially the one with the pulverized pistachios.

@barbarabeeton Look at this one: possibly the best in Catania (Savia, via Etnea)

@egreg -- unfair. it's not even time for lunch here yet!

2:19 PM
@barbarabeeton It's in front of the Giardini Bellini (so named in honor of the composer)

I AM HUNGRY

@PauloCereda I lived less than 1km from the place. ;-)

@egreg ooh :)

@egreg -- and presumably were able to resist temptation?

@barbarabeeton I can resist everything except temptation (Oscar Wilde)

2:30 PM
When I host TUG, I will take everybody to eat feijoada. :)

@PauloCereda -- feijoada can be found at several restaurants around here. it's good, but it doesn't look nearly as pretty as your picture.

@barbarabeeton oh leave it to me, I am very good at finding places with great food. :)
@barbara: when I visit you in Providence, we will go to one of those restaurants. :)

@Johannes_B -- our latest weather prediction, oh, joy!
Snow Squalls and any thundersnow will result in a quick 1-3" of snow
across much of interior Southern New England. Isolated higher snow amounts
are possible in any persistent snow squall/thundersnow bands that track over
the same area.

user147690
Is it acceptable to ask latex questions here for probably very quick answers, rather than googling and potentially taking much much longer? Or would it be considered lazy/rude

@AlexClark Fire off!

user147690
2:41 PM
Is there a quick way to force my subsections to not break over pages?

user147690
That I can globally apply to the whole document, knowing that no subsection is longer than a 4th of a page

@AlexClark Using needspace, perhaps, adding \needspace{.25\textheight} in front of \subsection. It can be done globally by patching \subsection.
@AlexClark But this wouldn't work with shorter subsections.

user147690
Alright, I will now learn how to patch \subsection then, sounds like a great place to start, thanks!

user147690
Shorter subsections?

user147690
Oh, so I will probably need to use \needspace locally rather than globally?

2:46 PM
@AlexClark If it's shorter than a 4th of the page it might fit.
@AlexClark A different solution might be using an environment form based on samepage

user147690
Is this answer by you essentially what I want?

user147690
43
A: Absolutely, definitely, preventing page break

egregJust enclose your text in an unbreakable unit; before it issue a combination of glue and penalties that will fill the page if the unit has to go to the next one. \documentclass{article} \usepackage{lipsum} \newenvironment{absolutelynopagebreak} {\par\nobreak\vfil\penalty0\vfilneg \vtop\bgr...

@AlexClark Sort of.

user147690
Okay, how do I interpret this:

`\lipsum[1]
\begin{absolutelynopagebreak}
\lipsum[1-3]\lipsum*[4]
\end{absolutelynopagebreak}
HERE WE RESTART \lipsum[2]`

user147690
I place my section inside of \begin{absolute...} \end{absol....}

2:50 PM
@AlexClark Yes

user147690
`\lipsum[1]
\begin{absolutelynopagebreak}
\lipsum[1-3]\lipsum*[4]
\subsection{Blah}
content
\end{absolutelynopagebreak}
HERE WE RESTART \lipsum[2]`

@AlexClark Or you can define
\newenvironment{nobreaksubsection}[1]
  {\par\nobreak\vfil\penalty0\vfilneg
   \vtop\bgroup\subsection{#1}}
  {\par\xdef\tpd{\the\prevdepth}\egroup
   \prevdepth=\tpd}
So you can do \begin{nobreaksubsection}{Title}...\end{nobreaksubsection}
However this wouldn't take care of the spacing between subsections, which should be added between \nobreak and \vfil
Something like \vspace{-3.25ex plus -1ex minus -.2ex}

user147690
Hmmm it worked awesome on the first two I sampled, then I replace-all'd, and added my ends, and now I have an error

user147690
Tex capacity exceeded, sorry [grouping levels=255].

\documentclass{article}

\usepackage[nopar]{lipsum}

\newenvironment{nobreaksubsection}[1]
  {\par\addvspace{-3.25ex plus -1ex minus -.2ex}\nobreak\vfil\penalty0\vfilneg
   \vtop\bgroup\subsection{#1}}
  {\par\xdef\tpd{\the\prevdepth}\egroup
   \prevdepth=\tpd}

\begin{document}

\section{A section}

Some text before the subsections.

\begin{nobreaksubsection}{Title}
\lipsum[2]
\end{nobreaksubsection}

\begin{nobreaksubsection}{Title}
\lipsum[2-3]
\end{nobreaksubsection}

\begin{nobreaksubsection}{Title}

Hello friends!

5:29 PM
People seen Jonathan Fine's post on c.t.t.?
Hi

I've written a letter to TUGBoat, the journal of the TeX Users Group, about the Board's removal of the President. It will appear in the next issue (for which I'm most grateful).

You can, if you wish, read it now at this URL.
jonathanfine.files.wordpress.com/2016/04/jfine-tugboat-2016.pdf

There's a brief post on my blog that also points to the PDF.
jonathanfine.wordpress.com/2016/04/02/…

I ask that comments are posted here or the TUG members mailing list (which is accessible only to TUG members)

5:50 PM
@JosephWright I hadn't. I didn't miss much, it seems:-)

6:01 PM
@JosephWright got a link to the ctt post? I'm quite tempted to reply :)

@yo' I read using Usenet: I'll look up on Google

@JosephWright thanks. Honestly, the article is crap (I hope this word is not too strong language)

6:42 PM
People, can you see my post to ctt? I can't see it myself :(

@yo' -- yes, i see it. thanks. now i will speak out of turn. many specifics are not public; they have not been released by the tug board, on recommendation of legal counsel. i am not at liberty to give details, but i am keeping the board apprised of messages to c.t.t.

yo'
@barbarabeeton "speak out of turn"?

@yo' -- see my edit, please. (i keep hitting "return" rather than just continuing on. i really prefer to have distinct paragraphs, but this interface doesn't make it easy.)

yo'
@barbarabeeton thanks. I'm on my phone so it's difficult to use a dictionary
@barbarabeeton shift+enter twice...

@yo' Yes, shows up on Eternal September

yo'
6:50 PM
@JosephWright ok. Whatever it is.

-- oh. then here's a paraphrase: "speak out of turn" as i'm using it means "i'm about to say something that i really shouldn't or am not permitted to".

oh -- thanks very much for the "shift+enter" clue! (been wondering how to do that for a loooong time!)

@yo' A free Usenet server

yo'
@barbarabeeton you're welcome :)

Finally showed here too:)

@FaheemMitha not really, just Jonathan being Jonathan.

Q: How can I programmatically normalize bibtex records across multiple .bib files?

Jeremy KidwellI use bibdesk to manage a variety of .bib files, some of which have overlapping records. This is because the .bib files are generally oriented around a long-term project and tagging can be quite different for some. However, there are a number of fields which I would like to maintain consistency f...

@cfr Same problem as tex.stackexchange.com/questions/237576/… I think. Didn't read the entire answer, but as a workaround use something like \pic at ([xshift=6em]A1.north east) {a tree}; instead.

@cfr Maybe not, but at a brief glance it looked similar, in that the anchors of nodes in the pic is changed. Note that the west anchor of the middle child node is directly below the main node (as far as I can see), which would fit with the right=of positioning changing its anchor.
