@Izzy @BoLawson @Firelord thanks for the encouragement, I really appreciated it (honestly, I have never been recommended to go for the highest status anywhere before). But after consideration, I don't think I can fulfill the mod's responsibility (personal life, etc). I see some other potential candidates that are better and more suitable than me (psst, Dan Hulme), and hope they will nominate themselves. However, I'll be still moderating the site as a mortal with you all :)

@AndrewT. You make one of the finest edits on this site. That is the first thing I would tell anyone if I've to give a brief intro of you as a user here. The other thing is that after eldarerathis once asked me to stop with non-constructive (read: senseless) edits in my very early days, it was yours, all moderator's and Izzy's edits from which I quickly learned what to be done to improve my edits. Thankfully, I improved well in a very short span.
So thank you, for polishing the posts well. :-)

@AndrewT. You are definitely well-suited to be a moderator, but if you can't dedicate the time then don't sweat it

@MatthewRead thanks, I understand :)

@AndrewT. As Matthew wrote: No bad feelings for saying No. After all, there will be a next round one day where you can change your mind :) On SR, it was a similar situation with me (I ran only at the second time). You'd be a good mod I'm sure – but you're also doing well as a "mere mortal", supporting the site. Thumbs up!
Besides, reading between the lines we have "two mod groups" here anyway: the official and the, hm, inofficial mods. The first group, being official, just got better tools for their work :)
@AndrewT. And agreed on @DanHulme :) (<- nudging :)

I will one evening this week. It's a bit of a shame that the elections are now, when I spend less time on the site than I used to.

I came across this in the first-posts queue. I feel like it ought to be closed as there's no useful way to answer it, but none of the close reasons match.

Q: Samsung software update

PinkHow long does it take to get the new update for Samsung galaxy a3 (2016)? I wanted to update my phone but i'm afraid that it will take long time to finish updating in the new version. Thanks in advance.

1:39 PM
I have like Sony Experia c1505. The OS tells me that the telephone has 740 MB total space on the telephone and there is also internal storage with capacity of 2.1 GB. Yet, specs say that the telephone has 512 RAM and 4 GB storage. Ok, let's take that 2.1 GB is the amount available to the user. But how can I have more telephone memory for appliations 740 MB > 512 RAM?

@ValentinTihomirov are you sure the 740 MB refers to RAM? what does it actually say?

This is what I am asking you. What is the main memory, besides storage and RAM, that is reported by the Android? I see that it is used by applications.

@ValentinTihomirov what exact words does it say on the screen?

Память телефона, Всего места: 739MБ, Приложения 651 МБ, Доступно 81 МБ
Then comes Внутренний накопитель 2.01ГБ, Приложения 183МБ, Изображения/Видео 14МБ, Загрузки 2.8МБ, Доступно 1.7МБ.
Is it easier now?

2:00 PM
@ValentinTihomirov yes, much
that first line definitely looks like it's counting RAM, but as you say, it doesn't match the spec
there must be a Sony thing going on; on stock Android the RAM and storage numbers are on different screens

>Phone memory Total space: 739MB, Applications 651 MB Available 81 MB
Then comes 2.01GB internal storage, 183MB Applications, Images / Video 14MB, 2.8MB Downloads, Available 1.7MB.

I found this on Sony's website: "Memory comprises approximately 650 MB of firmware, 750 MB of “Phone memory” for downloaded applications and 2 GB of “Internal storage” for music, pictures, movies and some application data."
so I guess the first line is actually the userdata partition of the flash, and the second line is /mnt/storage

anyone familiar with gearbest.com?
@Firelord Thanks for referring me to HW about a week ago

@DeliriousSyntax that looks like a right load of shitty products
I don't fancy the USB-OTG endoscope at all

@DeliriousSyntax I did? Sorry, I don't particularly remember. Anyhow, if it worked then good for you. :)

4:36 PM
@DanHulme what do you mean?

@DeliriousSyntax it's a product advertised on the front page of the site

5:07 PM
Oh I was wondering if the site was trust worthy

Why there is a [huge] difference in the total number of edits made by a user shown here and on a user's profile? For e.g.: the linked page shows 1706 edits done by Matthew while his profile page shows only 1135. Or take bmdixon as an example. Linked page shows 571 while the profile shows 547 edits he made...cont'd...
Does the linked page accounts edits to even [currently] deleted posts? That would explain the mismatch.

8:25 PM
@Firelord I first thought about delayed updates, but those couldn't count for such big a difference. Your suggestion seems more convincing. I can't tell for sure, though.
Btw: If we don't get more candidates, election will be cut off by 1 week as we'll skip primary and go straight for election (read: "if there are 10 or fewer candidates", which we most likely can take for granted). But: if the number of candidates exactly matches the number of slots (or is even below), I'd not be surprised if we'd even skip that …
So, @MatthewRead: it might be reinforcements will be at the spot earlier than expected :)

What do you guys think about this answer? The linked app has 10-50 installs as of now. The first review seems to be posted in Aug 2012. The answer itself was posted in Jul 2012 and the app is a paid one.

@Firelord Good question. The Revisions tab lists even more.
@Firelord I don't see anything suspicious on the profile. Probably not worth pursuing with someone who's been inactive so long

Alright.

Anyone want to help burninate and ?

9:28 PM
@MatthewRead What's behind the action? Low usage (11/5) currently. But are they both that bad?
oh, strike the "low usage", I was on the "frequent" tab #/

9:43 PM
@Izzy They're useless as categories. Anything can be on another server in any form, and likewise you can delete any kind of data in a multitude of ways

@MatthewRead Metatags you mean?
Well, I see some "obsolete combinations" at least (e.g. with ) where I don't have to think twice (google-drive being more specific, making cloud obsolete). I'll go for those now :)

yes exactly :)

I have a lot of shit on my Sony Xperia E smartphone. It has 740 MB of memory loaded with shit Google Apps like youtube (20MB), Google Maps (30 MB), News and Weather(8MB), Google+ (45MB), Handouts(30MB) Google play services (66MB), Speech Synthesis (20MB) and Facebook (82 MB). Despite I managed to install some Voice Recorder today and remove it, I do not see any option to remove the Google shit. Is it unremovable?

Apart from that, "cloud" has some places where I find it useful (e.g. + ).
@ValentinTihomirov Exactly. Some shit cannot be simply flushed down, it sticks.

I guess it was sticked. It does not stick itself.

9:51 PM
You need powerful tabs to clean the device that shit sticks to. We call those tabs .
@ValentinTihomirov Pre-installed stuff, integrated to the system.
@MatthewRead another good combination: cloud+printing.
So I wouldn't purge straight away.
Let me think about "delete" when I'm through the clouds :)
@MatthewRead Hm, dropbox+cloud is another redundancy. OTOH, if you'd look for issues with "storing files in the cloud", what would be your first steps? I'd go for "tag:cloud <something>". So if we remove that tag, we might make some things harder to find.

@Izzy To me that still doesn't sound like a useful categorization for this site. On SR, I could see it. But here, I can't imagine a reason to talk about cloud backups in general terms. The only necessary commonality between two different cloud backup systems is that they store data remotely
I would replace with for example

@MatthewRead I also agree.

May I suggest discussing that at Meta first, as we usually do, to get the backing of the community? After all, we/mods are rather "agents" than "rulers" ;)
We might be the most active users, but I'd count myself "one of them" even if/when elected mod :)

@Izzy You wanna make the post? :P
Ideas?

Cup of JavaI have a folder I am trying to pull from my G3. 10:08 PM
@Firelord Sorry, pretty busy ATM.

Matt said what I was already thinking

10:20 PM
I'll create a post

@MatthewRead Thanks! I assume the majority will agree – but we'll have something to point to if someone asks (or re-creates those tags).

10:35 PM
:)

@izzy in your repo PhotoAffix Beta is greyed out probably because installation button is missing. Also, even after enabling only your repo don't see 60+ apps, though I didn't count exactly
Not complaining- by way of feedback

@beeshyams Seeing less = not all apps are compatible with your device (F-Droid filters that). Any other apps "greyed out" (so I can check for a "common cause")?

Q: What to do with tags like [cloud] and [delete]

Matthew Readcloud and delete are frequently meta-ish tags: They're just words pulled from the question, rather than the useful categories that we want tags to be. My view is that various cloud services have virtually nothing in common, so having a tag to group them all serves no purpose. It's better to use...

Q: Question page has an extra yellow stripe for anonymous visitors

404Visiting a question page (any question) without logging in, I see a strange yellow stripe. It does not look like an intended design element. Seen in Chrome 49 on Windows 7. If the tour invitation is collapsed, it becomes a message on that yellow background, which makes sense. It appears th...

11:06 PM
@izzy- no..only the mentioned app

@beeshyams Lemme check what's so special with that.
Hm, no idea. Anything in the logs?
(I'll meanwhile check on my devices. Repo-Update is just running, what a coincidence, so I need a few minutes ;)

11:21 PM
@izzy- two more which appear now, delayed sync? Telecine and Rx droid.. Where do I look for logs? In settings Ignore root option mentions "greying out", but it didn't make sense to me atleast

@beeshyams In our logging tag-wiki? ;)
@beeshyams Ah! That might be, wait a sec …
No, PhotoAffix is not marked as requiring root.
Telecine and Rx also with grayed-out install button?
(Yuck, that download from F-Droid takes long today, still not completed...)

What a pain! I missed the whole week.

@izzy 1 yes, both of them, rather all of them with install button missing 2. Politely decline searching in tag wiki, it is 5 am, haven't slept yet and have long days ahead

@beeshyams No need searching, it's in there :) So, package list download completed here. Let me check.
Confirmed: PhotoAffix greyed out here, too.
As is RxDroid.
The others seem OK.
Strange. Trying my Google-Fu …
@beeshyams good hits it seems, my google-fu is strong: Topic: app install button greyed out | F-Droid
"incompatible versions" setting. Hm, that's not ticked here.
Ah! Found it. Tap the greyed-out ones and you see they've got no file to install. Reasons for that are listed as "no compatible version available" – but then what's that checkbox for in settings?
Bingo. You're on Kitkat or below, @beeshyams? PhotoAffix is LP+
Yoy. And good find on RxDroid, a candidate for removal when I've finished testing. Max Android version supported: 3.2, but targetSDK is 4.4. Completely gaga.
@beeshyams thanks for reporting, learned something :) That those apps are still listed at all must be an F-Droid oddity, as they should have been filtered out right after the download.
