@PauloCereda @DavidCarlisle I refuse to be dragged into a Justin Bieber discussion. Justin Trudeau, maybe, but not the Bieb.
But in iieu of this I present a scooter seat covered with Justin Bieber tape.

Sorry to bear bad news folks, but one of the greatest TeXies, Sebastian Rahtz, has passed away following an illness. A great human as well as a great TeXnician, etc. I know his family were a good support to him and wishing his wife and daughters the best.

@AlanMunn This looks more like a Harley-Davidson, rather than a scooter.

2 hours later…
8:57 AM
@Johannes_B I saw it, but you can't have been thinking about me. My website is not ugly!

9:32 AM
@Kaveh1000 Will you send to the various lists?

@Kaveh1000 Oh! :(

10:29 AM
@egreg Bieber-Davidson. :)

@JosephWright Thanks Joseph. Just did that...

@Kaveh1000 Thanks

12:18 PM
i join @Kaveh in mourning the passing of sebastian. so many tex-related things owe their existence to his work, perhaps foremost among them, tex live. his hosting of tug 2000 in oxford was an experience not to be forgotten. rip, spqr. and condolences to his family.

@barbarabeeton, @Kaveh1000 I assume that a notice will go out on the TUG members mailing list about this
@Kaveh1000 We should also send something to UK-TUG 'announce': I've not seen one yet, did you do it? (I guess from you both as Chair and as a friend of Sebastian)

@egreg: ecce nova facio omnia!
@JosephWright Wait a minute, there's a monkey who does surveys? Wow.
:)

@PauloCereda :-)
@PauloCereda Only @PLK can see the results (perhaps we might raise the cash so he can get a full account, then they can be exported)
Actually, that might be worth it more generally: an account for 'TeX related surveys', perhaps held by TUG or UK-TUG

@JosephWright I am going to create a gossipyduck.com as an alternative. :)
@JosephWright Sounds like a good plan. :)
@Joseph: there might be some self-hosted opensource stuff regarding online surveys, maybe it could be hosted by TUG or UK-TUG.
@Joseph: I added an entry to the survey, but I guess my submission is quite biased and can be tracked down. :)

12:55 PM
@JosephWright I won't participate, I've never used it... (I never managed to get on the initial leaning jump)

@barbarabeeton I miss not having known him in person, but his contribution to the TeX world is outstanding.

1:23 PM
@yo' Fair enough

For those, like me, new to this world, there's a warm and informative interview with Sebastian Rahtz from 2009 on TUG.org.

@Davïd Thanks for the reminder of a very good interview

@JosephWright Turns out we almost overlapped in Oxford. I used to have something to do with the TEI (and Lou Burnard) back in the day....

1:45 PM
@egreg -- i'm sure you would have enjoyed knowing one another. you, if for no other reason than appreciating the reason behind his "spqr" moniker.

Q: BibLaTex, Biber and Lyx: how to resolve \bibliographystyle error?

hhhI want to learn to use biper and biblatex in Lyx. This is how I would do it in LaTeX traditionally with biblatex and biber \documentclass[12pt,a4paper,oneside,pdftex]{report} \usepackage[backend=biber]{biblatex} \addbibresource{minCuts.bib} ... \printbibliography \end{document} The error is ap...

@barbarabeeton You should know that the first Italian translator of Astérix rendered the usual “Ils sont foux ces Romains” into “Sono Pazzi Questi Romani”. ;-)

@hhh Will grab LyX and check

@egreg -- lovely, just lovely!

@barbarabeeton A case where the translation is better than the original.

hhh
@JosephWright Hey, I got one step forward: no \usepackage[backend=biber]{biblatex} needed in the preamble -- Lyx imports it somehow automatically, now different err... checking

2:00 PM
@egreg -- indeed! it's a treasure!

hhh
Err perhaps false positive :/
Of course, I need that thing in Preamble...
Ok I am back in the same err as in the question
And this is how instructed in Lyx manual "\usepackage[style=authoryear,backend=biber]{biblatex}" (part 3 wiki.lyx.org/BibTeX/Biblatex) to be added to the Preamble.
So the err is elsewhere

hhh
2:22 PM
@TorbjørnT. are you biber user in Lyx?

@hhh As I've said before, I don't use LyX.

@TorbjørnT. I can't even get it to let me look up simple citations :-(

@JosephWright To be able to look up citations from the .bib file in the GUI you need to do Insert --> List/ToC -- >BibTeX bibliography first, cf. point 5 in wiki.lyx.org/BibTeX/Biblatex. That will generate \bibliography{...}, and therefore has to be placed in a comment/note.

@TorbjørnT. Yes, I tried that, still doesn't show anything useful in the citation insert box. (I hadn't even got to the biblatex stage, was just trying to use unsrt)

@JosephWright Ah, I see. Don't know why that might be.

hhh
2:33 PM
One step closer: I got it inside the comemnt but now it does not compile the citations?

@hhh Why repeat (part of) my answer in a separate answer?
@hhh Look in the log files for clues, I don't know offhand what the cause might be.

hhh
2:48 PM
@TorbjørnT. How can I see the logs? I cannot see any log file: it is running but citations not compiled.

@hhh Haven't we talked about that before? Document --> LaTeX log.

@JosephWright That's a mercifully short survey. Congratulations.
Sebastian died? That's sad.

hhh
So I haved added the mincut badly to Lyx?
I did it like this:
where I selected the file from the GUI

3:27 PM
The thread solved, thank you for helping :)

A: BibLaTex, Biber and Lyx: how to resolve \bibliographystyle error?

Torbjørn T.When adding a BibTeX bibliography via Insert --> List/ToC --> BibTeX bibliography you need to put this into a comment (Insert --> Note --> Comment) or LyX note (Insert --> Note --> LyX note). If not, \bibliography and \bibliographystyle will be active in the generated LaTeX code and that is incom...

@JosephWright did you get your Lyx working?
I got and I tried to provide all possible step-by-step images so anyone could redo :)

1 hour later…
4:45 PM
@JosephWright Thanks Joseph. I was offline for a while and have just sent to UKTUG announce.

5:13 PM
How can I retrieve a field's value in a biblatex bbx file to use it with \ifinteger? \ifinteger{edition} certainly won't work, neither does \ifinteger{\printfield{edition}}…
Oh, never mind. ;P

yo'
@JosephWright I can use "hollow-star" macros inside \iow_write, right?

5:43 PM
@UlrikeFischer I exaggerated :-) But to somebody who is carried away by nice looking pictures, Vel's site might be more appealing :-)

6:09 PM
@yo' Yes

yo'
6:20 PM
@egreg thanks

@Johannes_B Not if they are like me. I see all the restrictions in the service (only english, not this, not that), and that no name is given, but very exact infos regarding the payment.

@UlrikeFischer and still, people pay :-/

@Johannes_B How do you know?

@UlrikeFischer He told me.

Had my glass of wine, wrote a competing answer to @DavidCarlisle. What else? :)
Oh, and the train is just five minutes late. Very nice trip indeed!

6:46 PM
@cfr: Oh no, I messed up with glibc and cardiff has died! I am recovering it right now!

@egreg I was counting down the seconds waiting for the expl3 answer to arrive, I got the "other answer" ping while I was editing and I knew it would be you.

David slaps egreg around a bit with a large trout
I will rewrite Psmith to support IRC commands. :)

7:05 PM
@DavidCarlisle Sorry for the delay, I was sipping my wine

@egreg shows in the standard of the answer:-) (probably, I didn't actually read it)

@egreg while wearing a top hat, a monocle and a robe de chambre? :)

There is one league where @DavidCarlisle is the winner: meta.tex.stackexchange.com/ads/display/6473

@yo' LOLOLOL

8:25 PM
@PauloCereda :( Hwyaden yn drist?

@cfr I was actually happy to find a reason to upgrade to F23. :)
cardiff is already up and running in its glory and splendor and Welsh pride! :)

yo'
The moment when you inexcusably keep forgetting to commit. When you then want to separate things, you end up staging 5 times into 5 commits :)

8:46 PM
@DavidCarlisle And the OP knows well what's the right answer

yo'
Should this be \iow_open:Nn or \iow_open:Nx ? @egreg @Joseph
\iow_open:Nn \g_@@_article_dotyoin_iow { \l_yoin_article_currdir_tl .yoin }

@egreg: Have you seen Bayern's poster? It seems to be causing a lot of troubles.

@yo' I'm doing something much more important:)

yo'
@egreg catching up @DavidCarlisle?

@egreg Go Juve!

8:55 PM
@yo' See what @PauloCereda says

yo'
@egreg well, the ball is too large and too rounded, and the field is not white enough :)

9:06 PM
@egreg he's new, anyone can make a mistake
@yo' doesn't make any difference really, I guess n is quicker, with x latex edef expands it before passing it to \open otherwise it goes straight to \open but that does an edef style expansion anyway

yo'
@DavidCarlisle ok thanks. These TeX internals that do expand their arguments nonetheless confuse me, especially since interface3 keeps mum about them...

2 hours later…
@DavidCarlisle They aren't even German!

11:25 PM
@egreg oh you mean these Germans? bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35814918

I just learned that Sebastian Rahtz has passed away: tug.org/pipermail/tex-live/2016-March/037849.html

@DavidCarlisle :(

yo'
@MartinSchröder yeah, Kaveh announced it here (see in the right pane)

Ah. It was just announced on the tex-live mailing list. :-(
Who's going to write a blog article?
