Q: An old anime from a few years ago that I cannot remember

LineaChBasically, I have been wondering for years what anime I was looking for and after searching through numerous websites and anime's, I still cannot find it! The anime itself had a old feel to it and was not set in modern day (set around medieval times or something of the sort but a fantasy kind of ...

9:10 PM
Hello

Honnichiwa

I'm here to talk about the state of the site, where we are where we'd like to go, what we're not doing enough of and what we can do about it

not enough fun!

what do you consider fun?

many things: discussing new and old interesting things, sharing musics, doing things together
on the main site, I think we could use nice decorations, but that is coming
idk if calendar chat events make people come together to talk about new series ever worked, maybe worth looking into
that's about it for now
we could try doing image hunts on specified topics if anyone is interested
I've done a few batches of scenery pics (as seen in room's bookmarks)
some of them are now my wallpapers
from my perspective, ID request are killing all the mood on the main site simply because they are so many and low quality, and every time I see one, it's like I'm already conditioned to a negative emotional response. They are rarely good, so in total it's 95% negative and 5% neutral response. I think I can say they're ruining the show for me, at least.
I think we could make some silly community ads, like in the starred message by Gao

9:25 PM
okay
aside from what about id reqs

@ton.yeung What do you mean by seeding?

um I don't think this is how it works
usually it's new users asking questions, isn't it?
how would they become new users if they don't know they can… idk it's a confusing approach

@ton.yeung I get the concept, but I think it will be a real pain in the ass to apply
More than effort, this requires, as you said, coordination.

ok so we ask very easy to answer questions? or we ask things we haven't considered asking before for various reasons like it's not really interesting or important? I think that means we'd be posting useless questions just for the sake of someone getting rep giving a meaningless answer

Coordination in a website where everything is asynchronous..

9:30 PM
we're already doing it, aren't we?
and those questions that don't get asked, are not interesting/useful and therefore answers to them wouldn't be useful, don't you agree?

I don't know

well yea
I don't think that's a problem at all then

Anyway, no matter if we apply it or not, we must not reduce the content's quality of the website to attract new users

ok but if they don't understand, they would ask
and if they aren't, maybe there isn't anything to ask
I don't think we have many good enough or complex enough shows this time around for many questions to appear, so we aren't seeing many posted
@Ikaros this is what I'm afraid seeding will result in
Naruto is already attracting a bunch of silly questions about simple things (in the narutoverse)

@ton.yeung I am absolutely certain that the person who would have asked a bad/shitty question will answer in a bad way anyway

9:34 PM
ok so they're dedicated and they want any discussion on the topic, asking any questions that would come to mind, I don't really care about Naruto tag
it's not people here, it's new users who are afraid to post additional information in a new answer

I honestly don't think we should worry about either existing users not leaving, nor about trying to attract new users artificially. I think we should make the place more appealing (by removing IDs possibly) for the core audience (not the ID people), and the upcoming design could just help do that, and there's not much we can do ourselves.

@ton.yeung I don't think the issue comes with the age. It's about getting what is the point of SE and what is expected as content's quality
@ton.yeung I am still a teen (20 y o), I don't think it is up with the age

@ton.yeung I've been a new user and I've been afraid of existing answers covering enough for my answer to either not count for anything and get no response, or get negative response because existing answer will be bigger than mine
no, it's why we need to make it more appealing for users to find existing questions and add details to answers which lack them by posting theirs

@ton.yeung I might reconsider the definition of a teen then o:

9:38 PM
@ton.yeung hey it's just me
2 people out of how many we have
we could put it on meta and see what people think about each idea as a separate answer by voting and commenting… but ok
nah man you give up too easily
but it's your choice
alright

Okay then

I try to help but it doesn't work out very often
so I'm saying everything I think :I
can't really call myself the ultimate authority or that I've organized serious communities with sufficient success before
encourage users to search through existing answers on their favorite tags and add details as new answers, or ask new questions if they don't find something they wanted to know
it's something they'd have to want for themselves
either for rep or… idk

Another way to promote new users could be to bounty new users answers more often, so they really see their effort rewarded

we're talking about fans here, they want to do stuff just because they like something

@ton.yeung Mhhh let me search few examples

9:45 PM
I'm afraid any artificial community growth will lead to yahoo answers (too much low quality content)
also do we really need to grow it?
well then I think the thing to do it to un-piss them off somehow
in my opinion, removal of all IDs will help tremendously
right now the site is a hostage to IDs
2100 of them

@Hakase Yet we are back to it again :p

@Ikaros this is just my opinion
someone who left because of IDs?
I'm staying for the chat at least

that's me o/

@ton.yeung Can't find examples right here right now and I need to think about it, but a reward such as a bounty can give a great motivation for a new user

oh ok (although I don't really understand about what)

9:50 PM
@ton.yeung What do you mean?

I haven't heard many complaints, but I think if you ask everybody, then everybody will have at least some level of problem with IDs
in what state?

@Hakase I am saying this because you said to @ʞɹɐzǝɹ you didn't want to talk about ID-req.

I'm trying to fish out people's honest opinions on whether IDs are contributing to "the current state" or not
I'd ask "imagine if there were no IDs, would it change your view of 'the current state'" but that's not the question to ask
@Ikaros I didn't want to talk because before I wasn't to this degree sure that they're causing a lot of problems, but now I do and this is why I gotta talk
I understand, and I think that's the only way
we'll still get some IDs for a few months if not for a year, but that's damage we can reverse

I only just got caught up on the transcript.

9:55 PM
I'm really out of ideas on what to do

I just don't think and measure would be as effective right now as removing IDs from the picture, so this is why I'm primarily focused on finding out if people still think it is useful
@MichaelMcQuade we gotta broom the site clean

Anyways, I saw a few ideas: get rid of ID requests, seed new questions, bounty new users, search old questions and add more details

yes, that's it so far

In this meta seeding questions was also discussed as a strategy to bring users.

I think we should ask people for their opinions on IDs, whether they think they're making the place better or worse, and see some real stats about it all
because if they're making the site better (somehow, idk) then it's all worth it
but if they're not… (sharpens blade)
see, the thing is I don't think we can or will do much in terms of asking new questions that we wouldn't have asked otherwise to invite new users to answer them
also, how is this gonna work? will every seeded question have a "Yo, don't answer this! This is for new users! Coz they're noobs and need rep"

10:00 PM
@ton.yeung I know you don't want to talk about it anymore, but regarding your seeding idea, what about a tag that would say "for new users" or something like this? It requires no syncronisation

from the perspective of main questions I think everything is in perfect balance as it is, and there is just naturally not so much activity as say on Arqade or Movies
let's for example see some real stats for total user activity over time, with and without IDs
(if somebody would be so kind and smart to figure out a data query)
@Ikaros if we decided to do this I think it would be optimal

I don't think that "seeding" questions necessarily means that regular users can't answer them Hakase. It just provides more opportunities for users to answer questions.

I kinda like the idea in this way

I think it'd be good to ask questions regarding the new series, even when they aren't answered yet in the source, that way people searching those same questions on google find the site

@MichaelMcQuade how is this any different from new users just answering existing questions then?

10:05 PM
My idea revolves around new shows though

I think it would end up with a bunch of really useless questions and answers when the series ends airing

But theres no way to know that ahead of time, is there?
And if it doesnt work, we can always stop doing it
lol

basically, "as we CLEARLY see in the next episode…" answers on every such question
and the rest of them closed as "unannounced events"

Dont have to be closed if they arent answered
Let me find an example

@MichaelMcQuade I am pretty sure they said the same thing for ID-req

10:07 PM
hehehe HAHAHAHA ahem

Q: How could Otosaka Yuu remember his imprisonment if it happened in another timeline?

MindwinDuring the live show by ZHIEND, Otosaka Yuu remembers his time as a guinea pig in the research facility, where he helps his brother jump back in time. The thing is, we later learn that his brother jumped back countless times (separating the guinea pig timeline from the current timeline even furt...

This was never answered

so did we start the ID service as an effort to try increase our user base?
wouldn't this then lead to similar bs?
am I the only one who thinks the main site is ok except for the IDs killing the mood?
@MichaelMcQuade it's just a plot hole, nothing interesting

@Hakase I think it is pretty sad we don't have more people while still having the same quality of content

it's just a natural flow of events
@Ikaros there are only so many questions worth asking

@Hakase Is it?

10:11 PM
naturally, there will be only so many users wanting/able to ask/answer them
if we were on SO where the questions are infinite, we'd probably leave first >.>

How does things go on Sci-Fi/Movies/Arquade?

books, movies and games keep coming in greater quantities than anime, and more questions get asked

As they are similar (as they are multimedia SE), I am rather curious to know what is the state of those website compared to A&M

I don't think Arqade is lacking new questions coz gamers are the most involved out of all listed
Movies also have their IDs and problems associated with them
let's see

10:18 PM
> story-identification × 5778 − 7 asked today, 37 this week
identify-this-movie × 2741 − 7 asked today, 54 this week
identification-request × 2101 − 6 asked today, 24 this week
game-identification × 80 − 6 asked this month, 38 this year
aqrade has 65k questions tho
we got 7.6k
scifi 29k
movies 10.7k

Lol aqrade got close to none

ye they got rid of most and made rules very strict
> USE WITH CAUTION: These questions are allowed only if you have an actual screenshot, video, etc. of the game you want to identify; not just a description of vague recollections. Questions about identifying games in movies, pictures, videos, or anywhere an unknown game appears.
they have "image-ID only" policy
we have the exact opposite (not really)

Okay
They did great job IMO

they also have an active user base to enforce these stuff

ya

10:25 PM
we really need to vote more and close, but the problem is everyone is tired of looking at id requests

I was just gonna say that
with focus on upvoting newbie posts

@Hakase I still sometimes don't understand how some vote up here

what don't you understand
I thk clearing up misunderstandings and gray areas can go a long way

Some good answers got close to no positive feedback while "casual" answers can sometimes get loads of upvotes

can you give an example

10:32 PM
If it's a detailed, well-formatted post that looks like the poster has done research and really tried to do their best, upvote. If it looks like the poster was lazy and didn't try much to make their question answerable, downvote. — Hakase Feb 25 at 12:54
replace "question answerable" with "post useful"
@Ikaros I think that might be due to differences in popularity of tags

Just as an example, I was astonished to see this answer of mine got so many upvotes even though it is just casual

it was probably on Hot Questions list
also One Punch was at the peak of popularity then

That's because One Punch
yea

@Hakase Is there a way to check if a question has been "hot"

This is why I said seed currently airing shows

10:34 PM
@Ikaros sometimes the best explanation is the simplest

@Ikaros it will have tons of views compared to other questions asked that day

@Hakase Yup I see what you mean

also hotness is achieved by getting lots of votes very fast
so maybe it got to Q 4 and A 5, and then it got hot and got more upvotes and views

@Hakase exponential growth and stuff

ye

10:37 PM
But you guys may be right as other less known animes have less upvotes
Looking back to Sora No Otoshimono, my posts doesn''t have half the upvotes of my OPM posts while being well more developped

popular series are always going to get more searches and this more viewers

:p

@Hakase I LOVE IT

@Hakase I love this

10:40 PM
hahaha

let's make this our community ad then

"Who needs Yuki when you have IDs?"

sure

Tosh will go tomatoes if we actually do it

we'll have pizza and pasta with all those tomatoes

10:42 PM
pls
make it community advertisement

What about a Tsundere ad? Something like a blushing tsundere with a text "I-I-It's not like I want you to join A&M SE... or anything..."

Follow our ID Request guidelines or she'll follow you.
