@AnnaLear Noticed you removed the link to betfair.com in this (closed and extremely bad) question: programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/126214/…
Was that an anti-spam measure?
Did you feel it was potentially spam?

@YannisRizos Not particularly, but why take chances? :) Links from new users get nofollow'd, so they're mostly useless for link gathering and such, but edits from higher rep users turn them into real links sometimes. The question's gonna go away soon anyway - I'm feeling slightly charitable and giving the OP some time to notice the closure.
The post did pick up a spam flag, though I wouldn't call it promotional. Just misguidedly posted to us.

@AnnaLear So by default the link was nofollow, but my edit turned it into a real link? That's good to know..
Thanks...

@YannisRizos Let me double-check that, actually. I might be crazy.
Actually, looks like I'm wrong and both the original and your edit were nofollow'd.
Meta tells me the current nofollow policy is a black box and some magic:

Q: Remove nofollow on links deemed reputable

Geoff DalgasThis is a followup to the following meta post: Remove nofollow on links at a certain age We have been in contact with Matt Cutts regarding removing nofollow: ... we’re trying to encourage sites with valuable user-generated content (like Stack Exchange) to have a more nuanced approach to t...

So yeah... nevermind that edit I did. It was pointless.

2:44 AM
@AnnaLear Well whether it was pointless or not can't be safely decided, since the details are intentionally vague :) Security by obscurity is not my favourite kind, but that's a whole different discussion... And I wasn't really assuming I was within the "higher rep users" range you mentioned above... :P

@YannisRizos You would've been. Most useful things unlock around 2k or 3k range. :) Well, not counting 10k where you get access to more tools.

@AnnaLear ` Well, not counting 10k` Halfway there... I'm guessing there's cake, please let it not be a lie...

@YannisRizos I... why, yes! Of course there's cake. There's no way it could be a lie. >.>

I'll be interested to see if we can come with anything that is as interesting as the hats

user20683
I think gaming has it a little easy due to their ridiculously active chat

@WorldEngineer Hats?

user20683
gaming has this contest set to win gravatar hats

4:32 AM
@WorldEngineer And apparently they take it very seriously! Nice, I'm guessing this was inspired by Team Fortress hats...
@WorldEngineer You could suggest it on meta, as a birthday celebration event, I'd go for that...

user20683
yeah but hats seems like we're just copying gaming

user20683
@YannisRizos maybe do something involving coding somehow?

user20683
4:48 AM
hats are interesting

user20683
maybe masks?

user20683
since programmers have a reputation for being introverts and "faceless"

5:04 AM
@WorldEngineer Well, most of us where a lot of hats (metaphorically of course, although I did once owned one of those)... And seeing how there are no suggestions for birthday celebrations yet, copying may be the way to go... I'd prefer a contest like the SuperUser one, but hats could work. Can't think of anything original, and well copy paste may not be an acceptable practice, but it sure has a long tradition among coders :)

user20683
@YannisRizos A contest might be doable. Maybe combine the two and the user with the most hats wins top prize and on down the chain with honorable mention for tag specialists and the like

@WorldEngineer Yeap, a fusing two ideas will turn "copying" into "evolving"... And I'm already a tag specialist, so I love where you're going with this :)

user20683
huffing the PHP as my coworker calls it

user20683
5:21 AM
@YannisRizos Maybe run some kind of design contest where we post some app and the person who manages to generate the closest model wins?

user20683
we don't post any code obviously

@WorldEngineer That's a subjectivity war in the making...

user20683
yeah

user20683
@YannisRizos Just tossing stuff out there

Yeah, the hard thing is doing something relevant, but still fun (to participate and judge)...

user20683
5:25 AM
@YannisRizos gaming or cooking is fairly easy, math or programming is harder

Well, cooking is black magic stuff to me
I like how the SuperUser people award The Upcoming Editor, The Upcoming Tag Wikifier, The Top Gun Rookies, etc, these could work here as is...

user20683
@YannisRizos yeah

But we do need a Programmers specific angle, we could do it a yearly event instead of a one time thing... This might degrade the prices, but I don't know...
Award contest specific badges / hats, stuff like that...
Oops the Super User people did it two years in a row, so making it a yearly event not really original

user20683
@YannisRizos we are the crazies that came up with OO and design patterns, we reinvent things all the time

Nah, programmers should do something nerdy like QR codes.

5:33 AM
@surfasb That could work, but how?

@YannisRizos As a big icon overlay?
Like the Cocoa badges

Instead of hats you mean?

Ya.
Hats don't sound technical
Icon overlays however
Maybe make the QR codes link to stuff on on xkcd or DailyWTF?

user20683
qr code scavenger hunt?

That'd be an interesting contest category, asker with more questions that are best answered by an xkcd comic, or would fit into DailyWTF...

user20683
5:37 AM
do something like what valve did with the radios in portal?

I can haz the code

Should I create a brainstorming room for the event?

Or just gather your wittiest, unicorn loving users

@surfasb "unicorn loving users" Nice, a contest where we ALL win :)

@YannisRizos Or you mean a make believe contest.
Well, I guess it doesn't have to be either/or

user20683
5:42 AM
hmm

user20683

Not a secret anymore :) I've added it to the meta question

9 hours later…
2:36 PM
Bored.

how's it going?

Question: Is internet distracting, if you are writing some code?
Definitely boring.
Rephrased: When writing some code do you find internet distracting?

2:51 PM
@ACube Sometimes. I'm usually pretty good at focusing on what I'm doing, though, so it's not a huge deal.

@ACube Writing code, no. Debugging code, absolutely!

Question: Ever felt like there was someone looking over your shoulder when you got stuck coding something and it makes you lose you temper?
Rephrased: Have you ever thought that It would be good that you can call someone when get stuck on some programming problem for hours?

Similar to rubber ducking?
Rubber duck debugging, Rubber Ducking, or the Rubber Duckie Test is an informal term used in software engineering to refer to a method of debugging code. The name is a reference to an apocryphal story in which an unnamed expert programmer would keep a rubber duck by his desk at all times, and debug his code by forcing himself to explain it, line-by-line, to the duck. The process is to meticulously explain code to an inanimate object, such as a rubber duck. It is expected that when the programmer comes across a piece of code that is incorrect, they will realize this. Other debugging usa...

@Steve Why is it for debugging?
LoL Rubber Duck? You got one?
@AnnaLear I am having have this problem right now! :(

@ACube
@ACube are you interested in what you're working on?

3:06 PM
@Jetti I don't get it

@ACube i find that if i'm not interested in the code i'm working on, it is very hard to focus. which is why i asked you

@ACube It is good. Don't run to someone with every little problem, but if you're honestly stuck and can't proceed asking for help is a good thing.

Yes I am. There are certain times in a day when I can't concentrate and internet distracts me more LoL

@ACube i have those days too.

@ACube The idea is that by trying to explain the problem you stumble across the solution. I generally use coworkers, but it's the same principle - just changing your frame of reference and talking about it objectively moves you forward. Sketching on a whiteboard is good too, just step away from the keyboard for a second and try to approach the problem like you need to explain it to someone.

3:21 PM
Question: What is the best way to earn some extra cash in spare hours.

I also look at the craigslist computer gigs section for my area, there is typically some stuff that could be done rather quickly
other than that, there are freelance sites like elance.com or vwworker.com (formerly rent-a-coder) where you could look for projects to do for money as well

@Jetti odesk is another one.

true
@AnnaLear although it requires more work to get up and going (I'm under the assumption it is quick cash needed)

I haven't worked with it myself, so I'm not sure.

No I don't need cash quickly he he he

3:27 PM
I signed up but haven't done anything yet. They make you download their software and then take a test. It is a good process to weed out those who aren't going to play by the rules as the test is about the allowed practices and general rules of the site

I just got bored sitting infront of the screen. May be its better to get out of routine sometimes to feel fresh.

@ACube do you do non computer related things in your free time?

Question: Have you ever felt the Matrix effect? When you look at a website you try to figure out all the code that is used to make the website work.

@ACube can't say that I have

Yeah, I watch late night shows sometimes.
I am looking at this chat, and all I can see is Jquery inserting new divs from the bottom and sliding all the other divs to the top...
Then there is the database working behind
I am thinking about the ajax it is using... That makes me so tired.....

3:34 PM
sounds like you need a break from computers for a bit!

Yeah, STUCK in the CODE.
Question: When a new person enters the chat room, why are the parameters to determine the directions of the picture of that person.
Does the chat reads the person's location to slide the picture in the users' picture list?

@ACube It's based on activity, I think. So new users joining are added to the beginning of the list and the list is resorted as people talk.
So, my last message bumped me to the front.
@MichaelSandler Hi. :) Haven't seen you in here before... welcome.

No no, LoL I meant when a new user joins, the pictures glides to the picture list. What determines the direction of that glide.

@ACube Ahh, that. No idea. I'm not sure I've ever really noticed if there are different directions. :)

@AnnaLear Check it when I enter!
What direction was it?

3:48 PM
I... didn't look, sorry.

Question: What phone software is best? Iphone, Andriod, symbian or Microsoft.

what's your definition of best?

User friendliness, ease of use, dynamic features, more features. Less chance of getting virus. etc

it seems as of late, there is a lot of malware in android applications
or more than normal

Steve Jobs said Andriod phones are like spy machines that spy on you? Is it true?

3:58 PM
@AnnaLear any idea on how somebody posted an answer to a question that was closed after it was closed? programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/126331/…
@ACube that's the beauty of speech, anybody can say anything, doesn't make it so. Of course Steve would say that. When you are losing market share, you must do whatever you can to stop that, even if it means spreading FUD

@Jetti Probably just timing. There's a small window (on the order of a minute) between closing a question and when the site actually reacts to it.

@AnnaLear ah makes sense
@ACube the best mobile OS is all dependent on what you are looking for
Apple does a fairly good job making their stuff user friendly
they do a terrible job of making their stuff open.
Android is built to be an open platform, which is good and bad

Apple has a history of keeping their stuff close. Thats why there is no external memory slot.

there can be variations in Android between phones because one maker makes changes to the OS that the other doesn't. It can make things more complicated for the developer
Apple's reasoning for the closed hardware can be seen as a noble one, in theory. However, in practice, it leads to, what can almost be seen as, price gouging.

True.
I bet when people get to the level of inventing their own hardware they try to control the market.

4:06 PM
I honestly don't believe it was a controlling the market issue
Apple wanted to build quality computers and to do that they wanted to make sure they knew where every part was coming from
that can lead to a quality computer, but at the same time it also implies that you know what all of your users will want

True.

Sad thing, as much as I bad mouth Apple, I'm considering getting an iMac :)

ha ha ha go for it.
Question: Do you think Higgs Bosson exist?

4:22 PM
@ACube I'm not a physicist nor have I studied anything so I'm not in a position to answer that
(i'm a spoil sport, I know)

Its okey. :) I bet no one here is a physicist.

I must say I'm a fair weather fan with the physics world

@ACube the Physics chat room might be a better place to ask that. :)

Although The Big Bang Theory has certainly made me want to learn more about physics...especially string theory

There is a phyics chat room?? I am going there he he he

4:26 PM

 The h Bar

General chat for Physics SE (physics.stackexchange.com). For M...
Dunno how active it is, though.

even the crickets are dead in there :(

:P
So If I ask a question about Programming a Quantum computer, should I ask it in the programming chat room or physics chat room? And what if the question is about recursion?

that would probably be best served in the theoretical computer science chat...however, I'm sure they wouldn't answer you (from what I hear, they are sticklers).

Ok, I am going offline. Take care for chatting. :)
Take care and thanks for chatting :)

have a good one
