A: Why are my ceiling fan light bulbs burning out quickly?

Jay BazuziDoes your ceiling fan wobble? Shaking a light bulb can break the filament. See How do I balance a ceiling fan? Is your line voltage reliable? An electrician told me once that he swears by 130V-rated bulbs. If voltage surges a little, the 130V bulb will tolerate it better than lower-rated bulbs. ...

I got two supportive comments but only 1 upvote.
As much as I like my rep score to go up, I also think there's a deeper issue here - I think people aren't voting enough (up or down, questions and answers)

I think there could be more voting, but I'm not sure we're that far off from other sites. If I look at the users page and votes per month, we have 5 voters with 100+ votes. If I look at programmers (a site with 4x the visits) they have 15 voters with 100+ votes. Is there a gold standard for SE sites and voting?
And I got a ton of rep today, someone went through and upvoted almost everything I've ever posted.

@JayBazuzi I've noticed in this community you tend to get more votes on more common knowledge type questions (e.g. measuring a tree, cutting scrap wood), than you would on specialty type questions.
This is expected I think, as more people know what a correct answer looks like in common knowledge type questions.

Those are also the kind of questions that get picked up and spread by SE employees

@JayBazuzi It's like asking a C++ question, in a community of mostly HTML users. The community just doesn't know if it's the correct answer or not, and so does not vote.

And the votes per view are still absurdly low. 13K on the tree question, 93 upvotes on the accepted answer.
How do we promote voting? I think the vast majority of our users are already SO users, so it seems like they should know how the system works, they just don't choose to vote.

And there is a vote limit (which I hit too often), so some questions and answers may pass by without all the votes they could have gotten.
@SteveJackson I promote voting, by voting.

@Tester101 I somehow doubt that's an epidemic :)

I'd like to draw attention to Kevin Pullin, who has asked no question, provided no answers, but has voted 456 times.

@Tester101 It's too bad the mods don't have extra swag packs or something. Maybe @Aarthi could hook him up with some pencils.

8:48 PM
I was summoned?

Ohh nooooooo!
Run and hide... the boss is here!

Hahaha
I'm hardly the boss, y'all. That's ChrisF!

Sorry to interrupt ya, @JayBazuzi brought up voting and @Tester101 was pointing out we have a user who ONLY votes and should probably be noticed for his contribution

Oooh. I can do that.

@Aarthi the chat room is way less chatty when you're gone :(
Nothing like all day yesterday!

8:52 PM
Maybe @Aarthi can get balpha to make an AarthiBot

Awww.
You guuuuuys <3

The AarthiBot would just respond "Pictures?" to every post.

laughs
seriously, I miss being in here
but New Job means I'm pulled all over the place.
Plus, I figure with the holiday, stuff's slowing down
And there's so much to do in Meatspace lately
such as right now: 4pm meeting in the office! :O

@JayBazuzi you could try going more in depth, explaining why there may be larger voltage fluctuation in a ceiling fan. Help the uneducated, become educated. Then they'll know why your answer is correct.

9:01 PM
afk

9:19 PM
OK, @Tester101, I'll take that advice. I still think that 2 supportive comments should mean 2 upvotes.

@JayBazuzi the one comment seems to be from the OP, maybe he just accepted the answer and didn't upvote + accept.
@JayBazuzi I'd upvote, but I'm out of votes for the day.
If I remember I'll hit it tomorrow.

Hmm, should accept automatically upvote?

@JayBazuzi It's strange to consider accepting without upvoting (though I have had a couple of those on SO), but why make accept worth +15 if it's really supposed to be +25? There is a rep consideration though, I think you need 15 rep to vote.

9:35 PM
Oh, I guess you can't upvote if your rep is very low.

10:03 PM
Nope; you have a rep minimum for voting. Not for asking, though
Er, back, btw

Welcome back! Fun meeting?

Very! I love our town hall meetings. I like all of us sitting down together.

How does that work? Lots of skype?

Yeah, the most epic Google Hangout plus a massive Skype operation
:)
But I gotta roll; gotta get home and get changed for the holiday party
verrah exciting.

10:18 PM
/waves Adios!

I'll see you later? :D
take care! /waves
