@jrg was really not on the mood to re-write one of my fist answers in the site ;) doing budget and paying bills atm, leaves in a non good spirit. Its edited.
I recently updated everything to the latest version through Ubuntu tweak. My compiz PPA is also enabled in Ubuntu tweak. After the update, the extra visual effects are all gone.
When I enter Compiz, I try to enabled the effects & the others settings, Compiz suddenly close automatically.

I am attempting to set up a wireless network on 11.04, freshly download today. The router is on and working. However, I do not have a wifi "card" (which I am assuming is a little USB-type thing that allows internet access, but correct me if I am wrong) and every time I try to type in the MAC addr...

I just installed Kubuntu. The hardware includes two current generation ATI graphics cards in crossfire configuration. I have only one monitor plugged in. Kubuntu's Display and Monitor settings correctly identifies that I have only one screen; the multiple monitors section says so directly.

Is it stalking if I'm looking at a users SE profile to see if there is a alternative way to contact them about their question? (abandoned-type questions)
I think if a user drops an email address and share it publicly that should allow you to automatically invite yourself to Christmas dinner at his house...
I only check if the last login was made at the time of the question, if question was made sometime ago and last login was made at that time that should def make that question marked as abandoned no?
And people joke about not being able to understand cricket. I've no idea what's going on in most of that article. I mean:
"Midway through the second quarter, the Mayor of Swaggerfield stood above the football on the line of scrimmage, as the B.C. Lions offence huddled. Winnipeg defensive end Odell Willis barked, chirped, tried to spark something, down 11-0, with the crowd against his team and B.C. going for it on 3rd and 1, on their own 37-yard line."
I prefer watching Husky StarCraft on YouTube instead of football...even though I'm terrible at the original game and I will probably never own the sequel
@Oli any idea how Ask Ubuntu mods are handling the flood of 12.04 questions right now? Especially about how 12.04's interface will default to, such as this question asks:
When I upgraded to 11.10 from 11.04, on first boot I was put into the Unity shell. However, since then, I have opted to use Gnome-Classic.
My question is, when Ubuntu 12.04 comes out next April, will it do the same thing and default to the Unity shell and I'll have to reinstall Gnome and Gnome-c...
@ThomasWard I believe these need to be flagged as Too Localized...even though I find it hard to imagine 12.04 will use anything other than Unity for the default
"ubuntu+1" is the developmental release of Ubuntu, so it changes every day so it can cause people to have lots of problems and ask for help. So for example people asking 11.04 (aka natty) questions months before the release, etc.
I think a bunch of us agreed in chat on how we handle these kind q...
@ThomasWard In that case it's almost possible to answer it (there is a good answer now - and I'm not talking about mine) but generally, I'm not too keen on them.
I think I've had quite enough of people not knowing the difference between GNOME Classic and GNOME Fallback...I'm posting a question for disambiguation purposes.
Since the availability of Unity and GNOME Shell, I have noticed widespread confusion over whether the more "traditional" version of the GNOME desktop environment should be referred to as "GNOME Classic" or "GNOME Fallback" in 11.04, 11.10 and later.
What is the correct terminology to use? Also, ...
I'm having some troubles with my apache. In apache for windows I (to put myself accessible on my local network) would open httpd.conf and change Listen whatever to Listen *:80
httpd.conf in Apache for ubuntu is empty - looks like most is in apache2.conf. but Listen
so i added it to httpd.conf and hoped for the best - restarted apache - now I have apache running on 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.1.1
I have a bootable Linux memstick that I use on a lot of different PCs (but all of the same model and configuration). Trouble is that udev is renaming the eth interfaces so that what was eth0 on the last PC is suddenly ethX, where X=1..inf. This causes if-up (called by ifplugd) to fail, since /etc...
I am a newbie in Linux, and I am using Ubuntu now.
I know by using cd ~/ , I can go to home/ directory.
But if I want to go to the directory(I do not know the official name of this directory) which contains etc/, var/, opt/, ... sub-directories, what is the symbol used to refer to this director...
I've got a hard drive with the contents of my /home directory at home, but I'm installing the machine at work right now... will it be possible to bring the hard drive with me tomorrow and change the mount point after installing?
@MarcoCeppi its ready for use, it installs, runs with 2 users: admin and anonymous on port 2121, I can implement some config changes hooks tonight (add user, remove user, port change, etc)
I don't remember polls being a part of jetpack, But I love to see a cinnamon roll on my server rack So if you have a paper stack? Make sure to let me quench my sugar-crave-attack :)

When I double click on text files, nautilus asks me what I would like to do with them. I find this to be intrusive, as I just want them to open. How can I fix this?
