@michal.h21 you said "can you post the source somewhere? or better, a mwe? :)" Making a MWE is not really possible, as it will take me so much time. I have this large Latex file which used to compile ok, not it gave that invalid DVI error I showed. Only with --lua option removed it compiles ok. It could be a package conflict? I can put the whole folder, with everything in it, and send you a link, so you can see the problem yourself.... I'll send you email when done. thanks

5 hours later…
8:41 AM
@Nasser yes. it will be probably some package conflict, there were recently some changes in LaTeX's Lua support.

1 hour later…
9:49 AM
@JosephWright: AGM minutes received, thanks. :) Just a quick q: shouldn't it be s/Alan/Alun/g? :)

@PauloCereda Yes, I'll alter that

@JosephWright ;)

10:20 AM
@DavidCarlisle Did you see \global\newenvironment? ;-) It even got an upvote!

@egreg did you see my comments on %

@David: so you are taller than @Joseph? :)

@DavidCarlisle You have listened to my talk!

@egreg people vote for any kind of nonsense answer, you should know that.
@PauloCereda has someone posted some pics?

@DavidCarlisle Check your mail. :)

10:26 AM
@DavidCarlisle :P

@PauloCereda no pictures?
@PauloCereda talking of pictures have you looked at souldern.org :-)

@DavidCarlisle No cricket team?

@egreg no:-)

@DavidCarlisle You should create one for next summer.

Were the UK TUG talks recorded?

10:32 AM
@FaheemMitha I've got audio but have to work out the screen part, but Kaveh was recording video

@JosephWright I suppose you'll be wanting slides

My talk is available: vimeo.com/144260762
@DavidCarlisle Might be easiest
@DavidCarlisle Your one should be relatively easy to do

@JosephWright (or are you going to use the video?)

@DavidCarlisle I'm not sure what actually worked for Kaveh!

@JosephWright you mean because I used beamer this year:-)

10:34 AM
@DavidCarlisle Yes (well anything I can turn into an image is OK)

@DavidCarlisle Oh. Mail from Brent? :)

@DavidCarlisle Thanks: I'll look to get yours done today

@DavidCarlisle No LaTeX kernel in an emacs buffer this year? I am disappointed. :)

@PauloCereda who was it sent to?

@DavidCarlisle uktug-announce

10:45 AM
@JosephWright OK. Is it online?

@FaheemMitha Mine is: vimeo.com/144260762
@FaheemMitha There's work to do to convert them (my own one I have a screen grab for but others have to be constructed from audio + video)

@PauloCereda thanks for forwarding that's odd I wonder if gmail filtered the original at the server for some reason, I got other uktug mail, eg the minutes.

@DavidCarlisle My pleasure. :)
@JosephWright: so we all meet in the very same day the Zygons invade. Coincidence? I think not. :)

@JosephWright Ok

@PauloCereda and why is @JosephWright hiding behind Kaveh?

10:50 AM
@DavidCarlisle He's a Zygon no idea. :)

@JosephWright Based on the beginning of your talk, all your viewers see is a slide.

11:15 AM
@barbarabeeton It is sentences like the following that really creep me out: I'm considering to hack the template myself, but maybe we should collaborate.

11:28 AM
@PauloCereda Brent's mail just arrived, I wonder where it's been:-)

I hope that not our @WillRobertson was contributing to this: grad.uwo.ca/current_students/thesis/formatting.html
@ChristianHupfer You looked into westernthesis.tex. Did you notice the test for twoside?

@Johannes_B Australia is actually quite big you know.

@DavidCarlisle Just like Canada :-)

11:43 AM
@Johannes_B so that's even further from Adelaide:-)

@DavidCarlisle Indeed :-)

12:19 PM
@FaheemMitha Yes, that's the normal
@FaheemMitha Kaveh does video recording too but that's much more work

@barbarabeeton If that is the way people and templates are going, i am out of here. I'll just enjoy the nice weather and do some other stuff rather than wasting time. Some people treat templates like closed formats. Where is this going to lead? For crying out loud, this is insanity.

@JosephWright It's nice to see the person who's talking.

12:34 PM
@FaheemMitha 'Nice' but for most talks not necessary: that's different if for example they are using props or drawing on the board

@JosephWright Agreed, not necessary.

@JosephWright Nice recording, Joseph. I have good screen recordings of my talks too and want to sync with whichever is best audio. Can you upload the hi res version of your somewhere, then I can get the best of all the bits and put them on zeeba.tv
@JosephWright We did not find the right cable to do automated screen recording of all talks but I will take video shots of screen and sync with audio.

@Kaveh1000 What I do :-)
@Kaveh1000 My plan is to do @DavidCarlisle's using iMovie from the PDF of the slides
@Kaveh1000 Hi res in what format?

@JosephWright whatever you have. can you tell me what you have?

@Johannes_B Nope, I just checked for obvious errors. I leave the rest for Gundar ;-)

12:43 PM
@Kaveh1000 Sound is in Audacity native format, my screen recording is in Camtasia. Both can do various export things, so I just have to pick a format.

@JosephWright Did David do screen recording, or are you going to manually sync by forwarding at right point?

@Kaveh1000 Manually: that's what I usually do (it's not too hard)

@JosephWright H264, MP4, mov, whichever. Best if sound is synced with it
@JosephWright OK, if you are prepared to do that... Then, again please upload somewhere hi res
@DavidCarlisle Are you referring to photo of yesterday? I have not seen it

@Kaveh1000 Perhaps UK-TUG might pay for DropBox with more than the free account space, then we can use it for this type of thing

@JosephWright Good idea

12:47 PM
@Kaveh1000 Will raise on committee list

@DavidCarlisle Can we pay to have scanned good quality and put online? I think this will be a good archive. Malcolm has full set too I think. I was discussing with him about getting them scanned.

1:05 PM
@michal.h21 FYI, just updated the zip file again (I forgot to include my common latex file initially in the zip file). So now it should compile. I send email few hours ago to tex4ht mailing list for link and information. Please let me know if you need me to give additional information. Again, the work around is to remove the --lua option from the call. I do not now remember why I added this option, but it was working ok for long time.

@ChristianHupfer Well, faulty testing is quite serious, no?

@Kaveh1000 Again, I'll raise on committee list (there are a few things to discuss)

2:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle Thanks for the edit

@egreg you clearly needed some help with the basic concepts of applying colour:-)

@DavidCarlisle That's your field of expertise. I'm more specialized in TikZ, as my gold badge testifies.

@egreg quite so. Tikz and cricket.

@DavidCarlisle By the way, what can be sweeter than beating Torino with a goal at the last minute? :) @PauloCereda can confirm.

@egreg did you notice the new football kit for the souldern team?

2:11 PM
@DavidCarlisle Which is the right kit, of course.

@egreg tex.sx isn't the only site where you are a top rated user ^^

@DavidCarlisle GuIT forum?

@egreg souldern.org 100% of users of which were apparently in Italy!

@DavidCarlisle Well, give the site some time. I'll spread the voice about the beauty of staying at the Fox Inn.
@DavidCarlisle Short of 1700 km, three day journey.

@SeanAllred egreg was lucky, there were no colour commands in that question.

@DavidCarlisle :)

@egreg :)

@SeanAllred don't tell @egreg but the race finished

More Zygons? :)

3:01 PM
@DavidCarlisle I think he's taking it very well
@abforce Unfortunately you accepted the wrong one. ;-) — egreg 2 mins ago

3:41 PM
@Johannes_B Yes, but that was not the topic of the question -- you can readily comment etc.

@ChristianHupfer Because people don't post MWEs and do not want to read how to do it. It is not your fault.

Reading a lot of TUGboat back issues :-)

@Johannes_B Exactly. And that's why I did not glue that that snippets of the O.P. to a working document and answered 'fragmentally' only (which is quite exceptional for me ;-))
@Johannes_B: Back to expl3 version of assoccnt ...

That's gotta be helpful in a template:
\newcommand{\helv}{\fontfamily{phv}\fontsize{9}{11}\selectfont}
\newcommand{\book}{\fontfamily{pbk}\fontseries{m}\fontsize{11}{13}\selectfont}

yo'
@Johannes_B hahaha

4:11 PM
@Johannes_B Definitely.

Reprobates from yesterday :-)

@yo' @egreg The more weird stuff i see, the more i feel like providing templates is like putting an open box of guns in the lunch room of an insane asylum.
5

yo'
@Johannes_B :)

4:33 PM
@yo' cleanthesis which is also on CTAN due to @SeanAllred's request uses KOMA-commands but never checks if KOMA even is used. The custom reference commands give quite funny error with memoir :-/

@JosephWright The League of extraordinary gentleman? ;-)

4:53 PM
@JosephWright -- i think i have most copies of baskerville. my tex archives are promised to the museum of printing (museumofprinting.org); that includes all of tugboat, texniques, tex & tug news, a googotz of tex manuals (including prepub versions of some), and copies of publications of other tex groups (not all complete runs). so what i have of baskerville will be installed in their library. just fyi.

@barbarabeeton I (or rather I on behalf of UK-TUG) now have a full set of Baskerville. I think that the British Library do too from checking their database.
@barbarabeeton Do you have TeXline? (A new name to me, but I found it while reading over the back issues to track down a founding date for UK-TUG)

@Johannes_B -- i'm busy writing my column for tugboat, including a section on templates. (i've already rewritten it three times, and expect to throw the latest one out too.) i think maybe i should use that quote ... (will send you the text after i decide what not to throw away, since i expect to be taking your name in vain.)

5:13 PM
@JosephWright -- yes, i do have texline, although i'm not certain that i have all issues. (they're at home in a box.) if you like, i will put it on my to-do list to let you know which ones (but it will take a while).

@barbarabeeton Was just wondering, really: Malcolm Clark presumably has a full set

@barbarabeeton I have a feeling Malcolm has full set of TeXLine. He kindly scanned a copy of my review of LaTeX in 1987 :-) figshare.com/articles/LaTeX_A_document_preparation_system/…

@Kaveh1000 Might be worth asking him

@JosephWright Great. Do you have photo of Chairmen?

5:19 PM
fog creeping up the from the Rhine valley and falling down the hills ...

@JosephWright Will do...

@JosephWright and @Kaveh1000 -- okay, i'll consider that taken care of. (when i do get around to sorting and cataloguing my archives, i'll distribute a list to "interested parties".)
@JosephWright -- i've never met some of these gentlemen. can you identify them, please? (actually, identification of the entire group would be a fine gesture; there are only ten of them, i see.)

@barbarabeeton As it says on our website (for the full picture, LTR): Jonathan Fine, Peter Kirby, Eddie Mizzi, Jay Hammond, Kaveh Barzagan, Joseph Wright, David Carlisle, Simon Dales, Brent Longborough, Chris Rowley. Missing from picture: Phil Molyneux.

@JosephWright What is this a picture of? And it looks like a library.

5:23 PM
@barbarabeeton I am a bit exhausted. Not only because two little children have been keeping me busy all weekend :-)

@FaheemMitha The Sutro Room at Trinity College, Oxford. It's a panelled meeting room: we handed over to a piano quartet practice session

@JosephWright Ah, Oxford.

yo'
@Johannes_B well, as I said, we should probably invest time systematically into treating the template syndrome, but it's going to be uneasy.

Fancy. Except for the chairs. Which are definitely modern.

@JosephWright -- thank you. (i guess i should make a visit to your website.)

5:25 PM
@yo' Exactly, treatment, not destruction. :-)

@FaheemMitha You must mean the furniture, not the "chairs of UKTUG" who are decidedly unmodern.

@yo' That will be uneasy indeed, since some are quite proud of their template, even if it isn't good.

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I mean the furniture.

@DavidCarlisle :-)
@DavidCarlisle You've avoided that job, so far ...

@FaheemMitha I know:-)
@JosephWright I know:-)

5:26 PM
@FaheemMitha @DavidCarlisle A summit of old blokes :-P (Well, I omit @JosephWright here explicitly :P)
2

@barbarabeeton I'd not met Peter Kirby or Chris Rowley before

@ChristianHupfer Except I have no idea who they are.

yo'
@FaheemMitha you don't need to know them; they only produce bugs

@yo' They look way too respectable to do anything of the kind.

@FaheemMitha If I am not completely errant the guy left to Kaveh is not Sebastian Rahtz?

5:29 PM
@ChristianHupfer no

@ChristianHupfer That doesn't help me much, since I don't know which one is Kaveh.

They are labelled in Joseph's blog post, I'll find the link...

@DavidCarlisle Corrected :-P

@FaheemMitha uk.tug.org/2015/11/01/speaker-meeting-2015-2 has the list of people

@JosephWright -- i've never met peter kirby (or some of the others, although i know most names). chris rowley, on the other hand, i've known since he attended early tug meetings at stanford.

5:30 PM
@FaheemMitha To the outmost right

@JosephWright Thank you.

@FaheemMitha I hope you spotted @DavidCarlisle and @JosephWright at least : Spot the loonies @PauloCereda ;-)

Hmm, Simon Dales appears unhappy. Second from right in the first picture.
@ChristianHupfer I know what David looks like. He's insanely cool looking.
I think Joseph has half his face missing (second photo). Standing to the right of David, yes?

@FaheemMitha From David's point of view: Yes!

5:34 PM
@ChristianHupfer Yes, from David's pov.
Maybe some people should stand on tip-toe. Or a chair.

@FaheemMitha Joseph operates in the background ... he's a secret agent in TUG's service ;-)

Or some could sit. Shame I wasn't there - I could have offered suggestions. And maybe had some sherry.
Do people still drink at Oxford?

@FaheemMitha tea, coffee, orange juice

@ChristianHupfer Then he needs a different name.
@DavidCarlisle Well, that's disappointing. I expected port, at least. To go with the room.

@FaheemMitha blame @JosephWright If he'd paid more I guess that we would have had full waiter service, on the other hand, I don't drink and drive, and it's a long walk home.

5:41 PM
That caption should list the people in front sepately from the people in the back. It would be less confusing.

5:57 PM
I'm using wrapfig and there's too much space left above the figure. Can I manually reduce it?

@DavidCarlisle I thought you lived in Oxford. But maybe not in town, exactly?

@FaheemMitha yes (Oxfordshire at least) but 25 miles is a long way to walk home after a tex meeting

@DavidCarlisle That's true, it is.

@FaheemMitha Excuse to link to my new website which was launched today:-) souldern.org :-)

@DavidCarlisle Your site? As in, you created it?
Generally good job scaling for larger fonts.

6:01 PM
@FaheemMitha yes I sort of volunteered when the Parish Council asked if anyone in the village knew anything about websites. Ended up making all of the pages so far:-)

@DavidCarlisle Oh. Small village?

@FaheemMitha around 180 houses

It looks very sylvan. Also bucolic.
@DavidCarlisle what are the pros and cons of living in a small Oxfordshire village?
@DavidCarlisle "Stone Trough: It had been muted that a plaque should be placed by the stone trough that had very kindly been donated by Burgess Reclamation." That should probably be "mooted". Sorry, my inner pedant.

I'm trying to use a wrapfig. There is too much vertical space inserted before the figure. How can I fix this? I know there's an option to control how many lines the wrapfig takes up, but that doesn't change the size of the vertical gap above the figure. It just runs some of the text through the figure (if sufficiently reduced).

6:18 PM
@FaheemMitha which page?

Eek.
MINUTES OF THE SOULDERN PARISH COUNCIL MEETING
HELD IN THE VILLAGE HALL
ON 16th JULY 2015

@FaheemMitha Ah thought so, that's why search missed it, but minutes are minutes (so not changable even if wrong:-)

@DavidCarlisle Bummer.

@FaheemMitha the point of the website actually is that there is (now, since April) a legal requirement for councils to put minutes and other papers on a public website

@DavidCarlisle Oh. Required by who?

6:22 PM
@FaheemMitha british government, see souldern.org/parish-council/transparency

@DavidCarlisle Oh.

@FaheemMitha Basically it's a money saving measure they have wound up the audit commission who used to audit lots of public bodies, and instead forced the bodies to work in public in the hope that "the citizens" take an interest and check what is happening,

@DavidCarlisle That sounds lazy.

@FaheemMitha politics is politics

On the part of the govt, I mean. Or cheap. Or both.
@DavidCarlisle Darn tootin'.

6:25 PM
@barbarabeeton I am forced to write answers like that: latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=26846

@Nasser I just broke my left hand and I chipped the spine a little bit, so I will not be able to look at this for some time, I am afraid :(

@michal.h21 ouch, take care

@DavidCarlisle thanks, it shouldn't be too serious, fortunately, the let me to go home from the hospital. I can walk and everythig, I just feel some pain in my back

yo'
@michal.h21 Take care, pal!

6:50 PM
@yo' thanks :)

7:16 PM
@michal.h21 I am sorry to hear you broke your hand! Take good care and wishing you speedy recovery.

@michal.h21 -- i hope you have a speedy and complete recovery, with no lasting side effects. (and be careful next time.)

8:14 PM
@barbarabeeton @Nasser thank you. I hope for speedy recovery as well.

@PauloCereda Not very good news for Palmeiras. :(

3 hours later…
11:38 PM
@DavidCarlisle amstex + LuaTeX :) You should write amsluatex.tex
