Q: Why are Homogeneous Coordinates used in Computer Graphics?

anonymousWhy are Homogeneous Coordinates used in Computer Graphics? What would be the problem if Homogeneous Coordinates were not used in matrix transformations?

Q: How to extract a BRDF from a shader

wilFor normalization purposes, how to "extract" a BRDF function from an ad-hoc piece of pixel shading code ? If we have a shader function like: float4 MyShadingFunction(float3 incomingLightDirection, float incomingRadiance) { float4 lightContributionToPixelColor; // ... // several c...

Q: Downvotes but no close-votes - what does this mean?

trichoplaxThis question has 2 downvotes at present, but no close votes. There is a comment suggesting that the question is unclear, which is a valid close reason, but I don't know whether both the downvotes are for this reason. Perhaps it would be useful to have a discussion about downvotes and close vote...

@trichoplax Remember that many users have dropped below the CV privilege again since public beta started.
There are only 17 users with CV privileges at the moment, but 74 (if I haven't miscounted) who can downvote.

Ah of course - thanks

8:55 AM
I left that as an answer (with some more stuff)

@MartinBüttner I'm one of those :(

me too

Also, I have two NAA flags pending (one sits there sind >1M)
oh wait, no
looked at the wrong date
but still two flags pending

I've now voted to close that question, so hopefully it should be highlighted in the review queue for the others who have this privilege.

@trichoplax The frustrating part is I can see it in the review queue, but can't act on it. :P

9:04 AM
I'd love to see privilege rep levels be adaptive based on the current distribution of rep in a given site, rather than fixed constants.

Just there to taunt you...

@MartinBüttner Can you aktually look into the review queue items? All I see is the overview about X posts in queue Y

@Nero nope, see the screenshot

ok
That's also what I see

9:07 AM
That's very strange. I was about to thank you for drawing my attention to the queues needing attention, since I haven't had a notification in the top bar that reviewing needs looking at. However, even when I go to the review page I see nothing (there was one close vote question, which I have voted on, but now it's empty...)

Q: Posting copyrighted material

trichoplaxThis question includes a copy of a page from a copyrighted book. Credit is given to the original source, but there is no indication that the author has given permission for this use. Searching for this book on Google Books does not permit viewing the page concerned, suggesting that the copyright ...

@trichoplax well the other one would be due to the CV you cast yourself earlier. you have probably already reviewed the LQPs that are still there (I think they've been sitting around for a while)

@trichoplax The VTC queue only shows questions that you did not yet vote on.

Ah of course - I'd forgotten that low quality posts need multiple votes before deleting.
So the only annoying thing is that the single close vote question that was eligible for me to vote on didn't trigger a review queue notification at the top of my screen

9:11 AM
Afaik, there is no notification for pending review items.

@trichoplax I think that only pops up if there is a certain minimum amount. For instance I've almost never seen it on PPCG.

For some flags there maybe are notifications, but I can't tell for sure, because I don't have these privileges on any site.

Is that 451 related to the review page?

that's from my SO account. the brown number is the number of reviews available (minus the CV queue, I think)
(although it's a bit weird... I can actually only do some 380 reviews across the other queues)

9:14 AM
Yes I haven't seen a review notification on PPCG for many months.
I don't have the rep on SO so I've never had to face that cascade of pending reviews...

@MartinBüttner Caching. Or you've already acted on some of those.

probably caching, because I haven't reviewed on SO in ages

I can only view Triage, First Posts and Late Answers on SO.

A few times on Computer Graphics I've had the false notification which shows 3 or 4 but then when I go to the review page it's empty. I wish they'd fix that
It has meant that I'm in a habit of ignoring the notification bar and only see reviews when I manually check the page.
What's Triage??

I regularly check the /review page on Computer Graphics and Startups manually. I also have not seen that number yet.
@trichoplax A special queue on/for SO. Basically to sort out the trash fast.

9:19 AM
We do seem to have a few very prompt reviewers, which seems a good sign

If you really want to keep on top of the review queues for smaller sites, there's the Review Stalker user script: stackapps.com/questions/4086/review-stalker-user-script

Catchy name :)

Did anyone of you hear something from the Community Team about moderators for our site? The to-be moderators will be able to one-hit handle all the pending flags/CVs/etc.

Some (most?) moderators will only use that power sparingly
So an obvious problem question will be closed in a single vote, but otherwise it will be left to standard voting so that it is the community deciding rather than the mods

Well at least flags could be handled more quickly.

9:23 AM
Indeed
And hopefully pending feature requests will get raised with SE staff
(should that be SO staff now that the company is called SO? That would be confusing though...)

yeah, I try calling them SO staff now (if I remember)

I suppose once we get used to it, it might help with the confusion over "SO is a member of SE, which derived from SO"

@trichoplax Yes, of course. But still the process can be speeded up in cases where it's necessary.

@Nero Yes I'm definitely looking forward to that

But you haven't heard something about it, right? :(

9:28 AM
I have no idea what the timescale is for these things - I've never been nominated before. I think most sites have had mods by now though. Maybe they contacted some people and are waiting for decisions? Or maybe they're all busy on something else

the extension we got in private beta may have thrown a wrench in as well

9:47 AM
We were 27 days in private beta and we've now been 24 days in public beta. It's still fairly early yet
