As mentioned in the vote-to-close chat, this:

Q: Just got (Array Networks) SPX2000. What now?

DalexLI do quite a bit of webdesign and have always wanted to host my own sites and custom servers that I make in C#. Today, somebody just gave me an "Array Networks SPX2000". It came with just the power cable and a burned CD with some pictures of itself and a couple of pdf files. He said it worked ...

Is pretty much off-topic, too localized, not constructive, and not a real question.

Q: Finding the Public IP address in a shell script

shantanuoI can find my IP address using ifconfig or hostname -i command. But how do I find my Public IP? (I have a static public IP but I want to find it out using unix command)

They totally forgot about: moanmyip.com

12:59 AM
@MikeyB hahahaha

I like dig @208.67.222.220 myip.opendns.com.

1:14 AM
@MikeyB that is hilarious

6 hours later…
7:36 AM
G'day

What's with all the really really really crappy NARQs these days?

I dunno - undergraduates getting into the swing of things ?

9:06 AM
destroyed

9:22 AM
cheers

9:33 AM
Hello, is there a mod online? @Chopper3?

Always nice waking up to a new badge :)

If you search for the term "softmail.me" you will find many users asking questions. But the users are duplicates of each other. Can somebody merge (or close) them??
And the user is asking the same questions all over.

@mailq good catch

and
Are the same
'Mal' seems to be the most recent
How could you 'summon' someone?
Two @'s, no?

9:43 AM
someone will be about soon

And then we can start to dedup all his questions.

I just saw that the badges page has been redesigned

Is it?
what has changed?

I can't see a change. It looks like always

I just noticed it has a tags tab
or has that always been there ?

9:50 AM
I'm pretty sure i've seen it before

I've never seen it before - but I don't look very often I guess

Cool, the user is merged. Thank you @Chopper3.

do we need to dedup now ?

Probably.
Everybody who has fun deduping is welcome to do so.

I have no clue how to go about it

10:06 AM
It looks as if the duplicate questions are gone.
But there are some left that are "strange"

well if we didn't have anything left to complain and flag then what would we do? answer questions instead? That's just crazytalk ;-)

It is.
So let's get back to work

11:01 AM
Didn't somone have a word with Frank? He's just posted another answer with one sentance and a external link.
0
A: How to achieve high availability with MySQL cluster?

Frankplease follow this detailed tutorial that how to build a load balancing mysql cluster: http://www.howtoforge.com/loadbalanced_mysql_cluster_debian

why is that bad?

@quux What happens if the linked site goes bad/expires if the answer is accepted?

so, we have something in the faq which says 'link to good answer' is bad?

This is the nearest we've got:
15
Q: Should there be a policy about 'One-Link-Only-Answers'?

Asylum See also: Are answers that just contain links elsewhere really "good answers"? | Is it okay to answer a stackoverflow question with a link? | Why is linking bad? Related: How do I properly write an answer that references my blog? We all have seen it, and might even given some ...

it's not essential but it's A Good Idea.

that's SO, not SE. imho, if something is bad enough that people need 'talking to' about it, it should be explained in the FAQ.

11:08 AM
@quux Well, it should still apply to SF.

otherwise, downvote & comment if it's something you personally feel strongly about. or bring it up on meta.SF

its a bad answer in any case. The question specifically said it wanted design help, not a howto

It doesn't bother me that much but imagine if you've spent a while trying to find an answe to a problem. You find a SF question detialing the exact problem you have and see it has an accepted answer. Scroll down, click on the link, page 404's as it went off line. In my eyes, that's almost as bad as E-E saying "yes! we have an answer, but nope, you've got to pay for it".

worse would be a link ot EE in an answer here.

@RobertMoir "flag as offensive".

11:15 AM
@tombull89: I see it the other way 'round. Suppose there's a question for which a link to some other site would provide a great answer ... but doing that is discouraged. So the question goes without answer, or gets only bad answers.
In other words, 'allow link to answer' increases the odds of getting good/great answers. Sure, some links will Go Away in time, but they will be useful and valuable as long as they do exist.

@quux If you post a link to the site and give a sample of the text, or briefly summarise the content that's fair enough. Remember, SF and the other SE sites aim to be the be-all and end-all of resources. They should come here to find an answer to their problems, and that's it.

having listened to all the podcasts, I could swear that's not how Jeff & Joel put it.
(but if you asked me for a direct reference, I'd fail to provide it. So ... eh)

@quux If there was a podcast transcript, maybe it would be easier to find :P It's like why SE doesn't like let-me-google-that-for-you answers. They'd google to find SF/SU/SO, find their question...and then get told to google it again.

I'm with the others on this. One-line link pointers smack of laziness. They're not quality answers in and of themselves, and they're immediately rendered useless if the link stops working.

I may ask on M.SO/M.SF and offer a bounty to get a definitve answer from one of the SE team.

11:23 AM
I do wish they did transcripts; I'm hard of hearing. But it's a lot of work, and apparently low priority for them, so I grin & bear it.
anyway, it is certainly a valid question and more than worthy of being aired on meta ...and eventually distilled into the FAQ

12:06 PM
Yeah, an answer can point to a link as a reference or as source for the answer, but an answer on SO/SF/SU should be able to stand on its own

12:21 PM
I've left frank several comments as have others - he just doesn't get it.

1:00 PM
@quux wonder if Dragon Dictate or whatever would keep up?

@Iain - he's now deleted his reply and left a comment to me saying he doesn't understand what the problem is

@quux @tombull89 take a look at sysadmin1138's answer here meta.serverfault.com/questions/2238/how-snarky-is-too-snarky which is relevant
@RobertMoir I saw - like I said he doesn't get it - someone who can should emaiol him sysadmin1138's answer above

yup yup
I think he's genuinely confused rather than being a bit of a plonker on purpose

1:31 PM
Oh look...the chat link is gone again.

WARNING, INCOMING RAGE
2

@BartSilverstrim Blame @PeterGrace for that one :P
@Shads0 <worms voice> take cover! </worms voice>

@tombull89 I was thinking more of the Reboot style of game warning

@Shads0 You'll have your Worms and be happy, dammit.
2

@tombull89 And you'll have your lego fleshlight and be happy with the scars

1:34 PM
...there's something that could be taken out of context.
@Shads0 it wasn't mine. I just said I had some lego.

suureeeeee, then why did you create that question on FreakyPorn.SE?

I'm not raging. I'm irritated. And I doubt they care anyway, seeing as this has been griped about for quite some time and not just by me.

@Shads0 Imagine the disappointment when I saw it didn't exist.

@BartDeVos ...yet. Give it time, this is The Internet, after all.

To Area51!

1:38 PM
The meta of meta?

'sup, bitches?

I'm not sure if I'll leave it in but I couldn't resist referencing TT's smartphone

A: Apache mysql performance and requirements

IainYou don't really give us much information to work with. 10000 requests/day is 1 request every 9 seconds. Pretty much any hardware/vps you can get today (and even TomTom's smartphone) should be able to handle that. Whatever your problem is it's unlikely to be hardware. If you look over on the righ...

THEY TOOK AWAY THE CHAT LINK FROM THE MAIN PAGE AGAIN! That's what's 'sup.

1:52 PM
@BartSilverstrim ...again.

@BartSilverstrim @PeterGrace made a blog post so the 24hr timer starts again

And I can't even find chat now!

I just have sf/chat.comms-room/chat.vote-to-close and some other stuff as default home page tabs

Band-aids are not a solution! Poorly and hastily made scripts, however, suffice.
Ideally this would be remedied with a permanent "blog" link at the top of the page rather than overwriting something. It's poor interface design to do that. I would have thought that would be a basic interface tenet.
I thought Jeff Atwood even wrote about it before? Maybe I am misremembering.
I get the feeling that chat is a red headed stepchild that the core team doesn't like, so they just don't care what they do to it. That's the feeling I get, anyway.

@BartSilverstrim Or you're so full of hate you're at the point of false memories
Best solution? Sonic Generations, it's actually fun and a good way to kill time 'til Assassins Creed Revelations
=D
@Iain He changed it to 10k, will TT's phone still work?

@Shads0 my calculation was based on 10k

It was in the comments from the meta question.

@BartSilverstrim Apart from @Balpha

@BartSilverstrim If it makes you feel any better, (and idk if this if happening to anyone else), but I haven't seen my 'review' button in 2 weeks now.

@Shads0 Yup. You've got to have more than 1k rep to get the /review link.

2:12 PM
When did that happen? I've been able to access it since I hit 250 I think

@Shads0 you won't see your review button again till you get sufficient rep ( or possibly get strunk and white )
can you access serverfault.com/review ?

no...odd, I was going through the link manually earlier this week
Guess I exploited something then

I noticed something the other day
the gaming chat room has a different favicon.. a heart

You can still access the link, but it doesn't appear in the top bar until you get to 1k.

why cant we get a different favicon? I remember us pledging it on meta

2:16 PM
@pauska but the heart is the gaming "logo"

and WTH the review link is now back in my top bar...ಠ_ಠ

Different favicon for what?

Who is balpha? Coder at SE?

@BartSilverstrim Yes, one of the code monkeys.

@BartSilverstrim Chat coder, yeah. Think Marc works on it as well.

2:16 PM
@BartSilverstrim he's one of the team

@tombull89 oh. bah.
@ChrisS My mistake. I just wish we had a different favicon for the chat.

It should be a sock

touchè

Or, for @tombull89

Damn, forgot about the face

o.o

Mitten for a hitchhiker.

With a very elongated thumb

2:22 PM
@Shads0 I think that's a male genital glove.
or a reusable, machine-wash safe condom

Can't be a condom, too many holes, all it would do is dampen the experience

@Shads0 twas a joke

@MarkM Damn, it was looking kinda comfy

@Shads0 It's probably itchy.

2:38 PM
for who, is the question

I'm gonna just say, 'Yes'

my day, let me give you a flavour of it

Does not want

oh and also tried typing in the "proper" name of the server too.
that is some bad ass fail software

@RobertMoir Did you try typing LOCAL. MY FUCKING DATABASE IS LOCAL

2:43 PM
i tried screenshotting the error message and mailing it to the dailyWTF if that helps

Wait, how many times did you hit Next? You're supposed to do 4 Nexts followed by a Finish.
Otherwise Windows installers get all kinds of confused.

also found a CCTV camera that was supposed to be installed when the building was comissioned - its wiring is in a plant room, with a patch lead in the camera base but not plugged into the network port. Behind about 8 tonnes of plant room equipment that I don't dare climb over
I don't think you can pin this one on Windows itself...
other than the fact that Microsoft still refuse to give people an IQ test before letting them use visual studio

Well, I just had a member of staff come in wanting to get to google. She was on about:blank, had used thing bing search box to try and find google. The page hadn't loaded so she came in to me. I told her to type google in the address bar so she thought instead she'll type in the address of the site she's trying to get to: maths-city. Page doesn't load. I facepalmed and she walked out a bit nonplussed...so I told her to click on IE's home button.
I mean, seriously? I though you only read about this.
use bing to find google, use google to find what she was looking for...
FML. FML 10 time over.

jesus
thats pretty bad

@tombull89 I stopped being surprised at how many people cannot differentiate the Location Box, Search box and the Google/Bing Search box. I hope they get voice-search working soon, I'd rather listen to these people try to talk their way to the Facebook site.

2:50 PM
@jscott "Type it in the address bar" - "The what?"

Computer...Hello Computer....

@tombull89 A bit of a laugh to see one typing "google" into the Bing search box though....

Dammit. There's a contact us form on our web page that sometimes doesn't want to contact us.

@BartSilverstrim That could be to your benefit.....
At least, possibly less contacts.

Did some updates, rebooted, and suddenly flooded with the queue.

2:52 PM
what your website needs is less "contact me" and more "chat that magically changes into a blog" linkage

@jscott People think it's black magic when I type "fb" then ctrl+enter to get to facebook... Usually they want to know how I set that up.

@MarkM that's pretty much it.
...kill me now...
it is astounding the amount of people I see bing google, then google YouTube (or whatever they are looking for).
And these people are teachers...

Given your listed population segment I don't find that surprising at all.
My worst students were always teachers.

@ChrisS We still working to get simple things like ctrl+C, ctrl+V across to users, let's not get all fancy with your browser-based keyboard shortcuts. )

3:02 PM
@jscott Woah there, what is this CTRL thing?

@Shads0 Please don't get me started on the whole "Windows key" thing....

I only type with one finger at a time and you expect me to press 2 keys at once? Are you insane?

@Shads0 To the left of the super key

SEARCHCEPTION

Sad thing is, I actually had someone say that to me once -.-

3:03 PM

Did someone say
22 secs ago, by tombull89
SEARCHCEPTION

But, bless MS for adding "Windows + P" in Windows 7.... Too bad we can't convince anyone to use it instead of fucking about with the display properties manually.

@Shads0 OH SHI-.

@Shads0 That should be your response. Then when they ask what the super key is, tell them to bing for google and then search it.

I think I read somewhere that Google and Bing's most popular "searches" were for other search engines.

3:04 PM
Surprise, I don't have it

@jscott HP ProBook and EliteBook laptops send that key sequence when you push the Fn+F4 ("screen" key sequence)

@ChrisS Indeed. And our staff can't use Fn and F4 OR Windows + P. Hell, if I even point out the mere existance of the "windows" key their heads will EXPLODE.

@ChrisS Yep, Lenovos are Fn+F7, but the "Instructional Wall" computers (attached to projector/SMARTboards) are all desktop All-in-ones. :(

I'm done with desktop computers; figured out how to make a Windows computer into a RDP ThinClient and I'm never going back.
I'm sure there some Edumacational software that refuses to run on Win Terminal Server... but I don't have to deal with that crock-o-shat.

@ChrisS Try all of it

3:11 PM
@MarkM Not sure if that's sad because it's true or sad because it's true.

@jscott Because it's true
Fucking S-word company and P-word company dealing in Edumacation software haven't had new developers enter their doors since the mid-90s.

@Holocryptic How dare you speak those names in this place!

sorry

@Holocryptic Actually, Pearson's blackboard integration isn't the worst thing i've ever seen.
I mean, blackboard's a piece of shit to begin with, but you get the point

:) And those are just a couple of the "big" names. Really these no-name, single-employee software "vendors" are just as bad.

3:18 PM
@jscott MIND = BLOWN -- thanks for the trick.

I'm convinced if we banded together to develop a good product, we would kill. I mean, actually develop education software that looks good and does what it's advertised to?
That's strange thinking in some parts I know

@Holocryptic You want to find a unicorn?

@MarkM I'm still looking for purple ponies, what do you think?

The problem is that online learning software needs to meet such a diverse set of needs to be useful to more than one institution, that I'm fairly certain it's impossible to avoid it being a clusterfuck while making it functionally complete.

Education software that looks good and works properly? Next you'll say it won't require administrative permissions for the student components to run or something silly like that
2

3:20 PM
@Holocryptic You get the VC and I'll help any way I can.

@ChrisS I do have a trusting face. I think I could squeeze out some funds.

@PeterGrace np, There's a lot of Windows + ? shortcuts that are quite useful, if not under used -- My new fav: Windows + N (where N = index number of a taskbar pinned application)

@jscott Win+R and Win+L is also gold, but probably not new

@jscott I just did Win+1 and was asked to pick my Internet Explorer first-run preferences.
Damn you for breaking my streak of not launching IE on this new computer.

@MarkM Is IE the first pinned app in your taskbar?

3:24 PM
ya

:) Sorry 'bout that! UNpin it already!

educational software sucks.
Sorry late to the party.
we used to run terminal software in a school.

@BartSilverstrim That's alright, you didn't miss it, it all still sucks.

@pauska Win+R and Win+L have been around since the NT days.
@jscott Win+n used to be for switching to different desktops; Win5.x could have multiple desktops like an X server.

@ChrisS That would be a very helpful feature to still have native.

3:27 PM
Terminals would have worked well if it weren't for the user's fondness for finding crap shovelware that they "had to have"

@jscott IIRC it wasn't native, strictly speaking. But some of the power tools (was it that?) gave you that functionality. It was lurvely.

I'm fairly sure they stripped it out... It was most helpful before the icon combining/small icons on the taskbar.

Anyone running BES having issues with users either not sending or receiving emails?

@Holocryptic Ya, tell them to stop using RIM products.

@MarkM Yes, I know, I know...

3:30 PM
The most important rule of system administration: no situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
3

@MikeyB Yeah, remember to those PowerToys... Still using a "cmd here" and "run in cmd" right-click options in Wind7.

@Holocryptic We use BES but I don't manage it. If you have a very specific question, I can ask our email guys though

@MarkM Inability to send and/or receive from their devices

Oh, you mean global outage style?

yes

3:32 PM
I can confirm that my boss got an email on his blackberry from me about an hour ago telling him that he was an idiot.

LOL
receiving seems to work (in my case anyways), but sending is borked

We’re getting reports that some users are experiencing delays. We’re investigating and will update you ASAP.
Yesterday evening...

Which means they're screwed for the next 3 days, based on past performance
It looks like it may be global. I'm starting to get reports from different client sites that they're having issues.
This may be the headshot heard round the world... I wonder how long before they're bought out or just fold up completely?

@markm: it called your boss an idiot? Is your phone system possessed by the Anti-Siri?

Long story, he knows he's an idiot
2

3:43 PM
@BartSilverstrim True Artificial Intelligence that is! Apple will be jealous!

He lengthened the least time on our wireless DHCP scope from 30 minutes to 2 days against my recommendation. Needless to day, it didn't go over well when we were out of IPs 8 hours later.
5

hahahaha

We had a nice chat about him not fucking with things that he doesn't actually, you know, manage.

Just got a call from one of our consultants; they sold a customer a computer and software; they're onsite now installing it.
Them: How do I setup the wirless on this thing, it doesn't give me the option
Me: That's because desktop computers don't come with wireless, you have to add it.
Them: So we'd have to get an add-on to make it wireless?
Me: Yes
::sigh::

It's a /21, but it's public wireless at a university. We've had zero issues with a /21 and short lease but I suggested making it at /20 or /19 even if he wanted the leases that long.

3:49 PM
@ChrisS Nice. You have to start somewhere I suppose. I hope he's new...

i'd wonder what problem he was trying to solve, first

@Holocryptic She's not new... just the type who blindly assumes if her $1500 work laptop has XYZ feature then a cheap client's bare-minimum $700 desktop will have those same features.

@RobertMoir I can only imagine.

And those prices are even skewed because we get somewhere north of $1,000 worth of free software (per computer) from MS that's on her laptop; and that customer's desktop price included a MS Office License.

@ChrisS You mean... it doesn't?! gasp
