Q: Why would people vote to close their own question?

digitgopherI have noticed this a couple times now. Personally I would (1) edit to get it reopened, (2) delete it if I realize it was legitimately a bad question, or (3) stand by my case that it was a good question to begin with. Is there a rational for voting to close your own question?

@DeltaLima do you happen to know where I could find the sets of lat-long coordinates of various airway points? [right now I cannot recall the correct term for those]

@Federico you can find them at eurocontrol's EAD

thanks!

@Federico You need to go to SDO reporting and select what you want right there.
It isn't really user friendly.
For starters they want you to use java 1.7
I've worked my way around that by fiddling with their javascript, but it took some effort to get in with the latest JAVA

That is the professional edition I think
You can get access through basic EAD as well (which is free and doesn't require you to have special data agreements)
You can login the right side. Guest / guest may work (IIRC), otherwise you have to create a free account

8:35 AM
I will sign up then. But at this point next week, priority is on the tests of thursday, this would have been a "nice to have".
thanks again

What are you working on if I may ask?

Just trying to show that my planner is able to comply to a given list of waypoints
so far I never used official waypoints, but just a list of hand-placed ones for testing purposes
I can fly across UTM zones, so a list of waypoints would have been a nice addition

Ach so. I have download part of the SDO database a couple of months ago, I might be able to find out where I stored that and send it to you. I'll ping you if I still have it.

In particulat I am trying to plot a "flight" from EDDS to LOAN
or should I be able to get them via skyvector?

I think I found the files. There are about 20 files with waypoints, routes, airports, VOR's, ILSes, obstacles etc.
I have no experience with skyvector, perhaps it works
I compressed all the files into a single tar.gz just exceeding 5Mb

8:47 AM
oh, woa, thanks
shall I post my email here?

THat's ok, just delete it after 3 seconds so I can copy paste it
perfect
@Federico message on it's way

received, thanks!

9:13 AM
I will answer when I come back from lunch, I am sorry, but today is a bit messy.

@Federico anytime, no worries

Q: Can 'aircrafts' be automagically changed to 'aircraft'?

Rob VermeulenFrom time to time someone's blood pressure spikes when the plural 'aircrafts' is used in the Aviation forum. Would it be possible to implement a simple script in the system to delete the superfluous s's? (Interesting: http://english.stackexchange.com/questions/46824/why-does-the-incorrect-plural-...

Q: Why isn't this site able to keep its budding stars engaged?

anshabhiRemember these users? Madhav Sudarshan Victor Juliet Though Victor Juliet was mysteriously banned for a week, but when he came back he earned about 1000 rep in 5 days. And the latest one.. Ethan Hunt Yes his questions were never clear but maybe we failed to handle the curiosity that he has.....

@anshabhi: Victor Juliet was banned for cheating with the rep system. He almost stopped participating after he got banned for the second time for the same reason. So I would doubt your claim that he was a "budding star"
Ethan has plenty of curiosity, and I give him credit for this, but lacks the constance needed to fully study and understand the phenomena he is interested in, he often gives me the impression that he expects all answer to be in the first 2 results of a google search: if it is not there, then "is not possible"

@voretaq7 if he's required to be current in manned aircraft to fly the paper airplane, then does that mean he can count paper airplane takeoffs and landings towards currency for manned aircraft?

7:22 PM
@BretCopeland What category and class would that count as?

7:42 PM
@voretaq7 "paperlight" ?

@voretaq7 A4

8:07 PM
@DanHulme damn europeans, why can't you make paper that fits on the shelf?!

8:23 PM
Well, at least they named their paper size after a U.S. Navy airplane!

8:58 PM
@Terry There's a B paper series too but I think it only goes up to B7 or B8

@voretaq7 where by "europeans" you mean ISO
and also it does fit on the shelf, if your shelf isn't a stupid size

@DanHulme Yes, "Europeans" -- we ignore you people and have our own NIST-blessed standards.
(Nevermind that they're photocopies of ISO standards on 8.5x11 inch paper with the borders cut off!)

9:15 PM
@voretaq7 aehm, A and B (and C) paper formats are all ISO, no NIST involved
Many paper size standards conventions have existed at different times and in different countries. Today, there is one widespread international ISO standard (including A4, B3, C4, etc.) and a local standard used in North America (including letter, legal, ledger, etc.). The paper sizes affect writing paper, stationery, cards, and some printed documents. The standards also have related sizes for envelopes. == Grain == Most industry standards express the direction of the grain last when giving dimensions (that is, 17×11 inches is short grain paper and 11×17 inches is long grain paper), althou...
what I found funny is that the B series has round metric measures for the sides (1 meter and submultiples) and is used mostly where the metric system has an hard time getting a foot(...)hold
[or by NIST formats you were referring to the "letter, legal" and similars?]

@Federico yes, like I said we ignore other people's standards. :)

oh, then I misunderstood, sorry.
time for bed, I guess

Our paper sizes are ANSI A/B/C/D/E I think
but nobody uses the letter designations
we're just happy there's paper.

10:01 PM
Do any of you guys know how a paper airplane makes lift?

12
Q: How do paper airplanes create lift if their wings are flat?

Ewen W.Paper airplanes' wings are completely flat, unlike the droplet shaped curvature of a full sized wing. How does a flat wing generate any lift if both sides have the same air pressure?

@Ethan It's amazing what you can find out with a search tool :-)

10:21 PM
@Pondlife I used the search tool and some of the things they told me were too confusing to understand for me. I do use the search tool and the questions I ask are based on the information I couldn't find using the search tool.

@Ethan That's good. When you ask your questions it may be helpful to link to the other questions you find and explain what you still have questions about, based on reading their answers.
If you don't acknowledge having read them, we have no way of knowing that you did, and will initially assume that they should answer your question.
Plus I don't see questions sometimes, or forget about them, and it's good to go back, read (maybe re-read), and upvote.

10:37 PM
@Ethan Sure, and it's no problem to ask more questions if you didn't understand something but like @fooot said, it's also good to mention what you've already read and why it didn't help you. Then we can give you better answers.
