12:58 AM
impulse purchased one of these jide.com/en/mini

"Remix Mini gives you the same power of desktop computing at a mere 10 watts" cool so it will play watchdogs on high at 10Watts :-)
Someday the FTC is going to ask people to quit using so much fraud in thier advertising :-)
"H.265 4K hardware decoding" at 5 frames per second :-) Naw that part is cool, make a good media box.
oops 265 ? but half this stuff is still using 264 ?

lol
I can test that...
no wait, I can't. I can't find any 4K media ;p

1:13 AM
yousatube has 4k ?

not much there
and I can't get it to full screen properly in FF

right more like demo stuff all properly filmed so it will compress, unlike some other (cough) Art :-) found on youtube.

yup yup
On cough places where one can download linux live cds its 99% "art" and the other "livecds" arn't seeded.
Might go for netflix when it gets here

1:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'd buy it if it had at least 4 gigs of RAM and 64 GB of storage

@allquixotic: I picked up to 2gb varient, amusingly cause I figured "what the hell, postage is 15usd anyway"
and well... I already have 2 other computers so... ;p
and by 2, I mean 5, and a raspi, tho only 4 are in somewhat regular use ;p

2:05 AM
$40 that is less than a good android HDMI stick computer ?

Bob
2:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek So much for three months :P

yeaaah
shrug

Bob
> The typical desktop computer clocks in at anywhere between 65 to 250 watts. Remix Mini gives you the same power of desktop computing at a mere 10 watts.
!!no

I'll just skip soda for a month or two ;p
@Bob: meh, I figure I could mess with it as a media box

Bob
"the same power" = everything is laggy as
Probably about as powerful as a tablet Atom.

@Bob: I have realistic expecations!

Bob
2:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek I just don't like seeing this kind of bullshit claim.

s/tablet Atom/shitty low end tablet atom

Bob
> Remix is the Android tablet that can replace your laptop.
!!no
At $400 I can get a far better laptop.

@Bob: the price point is more the thing.

3:16 AM
@Bob Much of the same claims can be made of the Nexus 9.

Bob
@DragonLord And they would be blatantly wrong.

It isn't slow by any means, but it runs very hot.
The biggest limitation is the limited RAM
@Bob From the standpoint of the marketer, it may make sense.

Bob
28 mins ago, by Bob
@JourneymanGeek I just don't like seeing this kind of bullshit claim.
I understand that it's marketing.
It just annoys me when I see people believe it everywhere.

I own a Nexus 9 and the CPU is fast as heck, but the device gets very hot very fast.
...to the point where it could cause a burn
Mine is rooted and I cap the CPU clocks to keep things under control when not doing strenuous tasks.

Bob
@DragonLord It barely beats out the last-gen (Bay Trail) Atom.
Current-gen Atom should be approximately on par.

3:21 AM
@Bob I know it's not the best value for a tablet.

Bob
And even current-gen Atom is nowhere near a typical desktop machine.

I selected it only because it runs Android.

Bob
Unless you're talking about a Pentium 4.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKQEIlmY_iU Probably NSFW for certain workplaces, but kinda geek humor because it's about funny Google Autocompletes - so paste it if you're not at work, otherwise ignore :P

I wanted a faster, modern Android device to replace an old Nexus 7.

Bob
3:22 AM
@DragonLord I'm not talking about value for tablets here. I'm talking about claims like "the same power of desktop computing".

I did not want another Windows device and all the baggage that goes with it.

@Bob That bothered me, too

@Bob These claims ultimately don't make sense.

Bob
@DragonLord The claim that it uses far less power than a typical desktop is more-or-less correct.

Do I love my Nexus 9? Sure.

Bob
3:23 AM
The claim that you get as much computing power? Nope.

Does it replace my gaming laptop? Of course not.

Bob
@allquixotic Pretty sure a lot of those results are scraped from websites and not necessarily entered by other users.
Cats... what?

@Bob On the other hand, the software being delivered (excluding games) lets you more-or-less do the same types of things that most people use a desktop for. Sure, you can't run 32-bit x86 Excel and run VBA macros, but you can certainly do a lot more with Android "desktops" now than you could a few years ago.

Bob
@allquixotic Android web browsers are still pretty shit overall.

However, even on hardware as powerful as a Note 4 or Note 5 (and that Allwinner isn't even close), it's going to be slower and laggier than a cheap i3.
You can do stuff; you just have to wait for it to render.

Bob
3:25 AM
@allquixotic You could argue that an i3 uses far more power.
Which is why I compared it to an Atom.

@Bob Let's not forget Core M.

Bob
Ah yea.

Core M kinda decimates the competition in low-power

Bob
@JourneymanGeek is right about it being cheap

...let alone type-U Core i7 Broadwell chips.

Bob
3:26 AM
The problem is a lot of people will see this kind of claim, buy it, and find it doesn't actually do what they need.

@Bob: I have realistic expectations ;p

well there's the thing: you have cheap, fast, and low-power. Grab any two and the other will slip away from you.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek We know what we're getting into when buying this kind of thing.
A lot of people don't.

I'm hoping for youtube and 720p.

A lot of people will say, "But I can't afford an i3 and all the other components required to build a system with one!"
So they grab cheap out of necessity

3:27 AM
@allquixotic:tho at cheap, fast is expecting too much

The i7-5600U has insane performance per watt

What I'm thinking is "Can this thing replace my old core 2 duo for everything but gaming?"

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Nope.
The CPU is on-par with a Pentium 4 at best.

@Bob: Well, consider what I use the c2d for. In theory, I can game/stream games on it
Other than that, web, some word processing...
I'd like instant or near instant on

Bob
Hm, actually let me correct myself.

3:29 AM
and erm

Bob
Pentium D.

that's it

Bob
(actual first-gen Pentium 4 is too bad to compare :P)

I have the same amount of ram (2gb), less storage
@Bob: actually, performance wise, my c2d is definately better

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I find Android is pretty crap for word processing, even with an external keyboard and mouse.
The interface just doesn't cope well with it.

3:30 AM
I'm considering what I use it for, and replacement costs.

"well there's the thing: you have cheap, fast, and low-power." (unless you live in Brazil. Then you automatically can't have "cheap").

Bob
Even web browsing is annoying.
It's like trying to use a touch-UI program with keyboard and mouse.

@Bob: they're claiming that its got multiple windows

Bob
In fact, that's exactly it.

and they're modifying the UI for desktop use

3:30 AM
@Bob Not to mention that there's not enough memory to keep more than a few tabs open at any given time.

Bob
@DragonLord Uhm...
yesterday, by Bob
Now it just displays an infinity symbol :D

Chrome is a huge memory hog.

Bob
yesterday, by Bob
Have ~300 tabs open.
On my phone.

@DragonLord: @Bob is an edge case.

Bob
LOL

3:31 AM
The other tabs are discarded.

Bob
Yea.

@Bob: lets move the goal lines a bit.

They reload when accessed.

Bob
@DragonLord Not always.

"Can this do what a raspi or raspi 2 can do?"

Bob
3:31 AM
Firefox for Android keeps ~5-10 tabs open.
They're only discarded after some time has passed.

@Bob Only because Firefox uses considerably less memory and can therefore get away with not discarding as often.

Bob
Memory usage sits at a comfortable 314MB

On mobile, I prefer Chrome's UI.
On desktop, I use Firefox.

Bob
Eh... I actually prefer the FF UI on touch too.

Tradeoffs here? I lose one USB port unless I go BT, and fast ethernet
Which I guess is 'good enough'

Bob
3:33 AM
That said, I haven't actually updated Chrome in months.
Same for FF.
back in a bit

Compared to a raspi 2, I trade off 2 USB ports for onboard wifi, and possibly ethernet that isn't hung off USB anyway, and a faster processor, possibly
It claims 4k, but that's probably at 30 hz
hmm
Prolly this processor.

2 hours later…

The next server upgrade is likely to be a nightmare.
openSUSE is getting a massive overhaul, the next version is Leap 42.1.
The biggest change is openSUSE getting rebased on SUSE Linux Enterprise, rather than the other way around (as with Red Hat Enterprise Linux being based on Fedora).
This is likely to result in incompatible changes which could necessitate a complete server rebuild.
This could mean several days of disruption, including downtime or unavailability.
It's likely I'll be running two parallel copies of the server, and may have to fetch the server's entire disk image to extract data from it locally
This will come at an increased hosting cost to me as I must spin up another node.

6:16 AM
hi

Bob
@DragonLord O_O

@DragonLord beat me to it :P
@UdaraS.SLiyanage You can always ask in here and we'll try to help if we know the answer.

Great, thanks for the help guys

Bob
6:36 AM
@allquixotic PhantomJS crashes - have you considered setting it up as a service?
systemd, upstart, supervisord, whatever
just something to start it when it goes down
as long as it's actually going down and not just hanging

Bob
7:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek Fuji Xerox Everyday 80gsm. Was $3.50 per ream.
Made in Finland O_O

10:33 AM
@Psycogeek There's no such thing as free shipping to Australia.
@allquixotic xkcd.com/1256

1 hour later…
11:59 AM
How can "Date Modified" precede "Date Created"?

12:22 PM
hm That's a pretty cool feature.
There's an aerosnap like tool that lets me snap to quarters or sixths and so on

Bob
@Boris_yo Because anything can set those values.
A decompression program might set the file created date (to signify when this particular copy was created on-disk), while the modified date would be set to the saved value (when the file was actually changed).

Bob
1:20 PM
One Massdrop and two Amazon packages coming in :)

2 hours later…
2:51 PM
@Bob i was noticing you would be lucky to even get shipped to at all :-( so what do you get when you make it to the $25 ? i think free ship (no prime) actually shifted to $35 anyways, and someday it will be $50 and so on.

Bob
@Psycogeek Well, correction: ebay (chinese companies) do free shipping, but they're gov subsidised
Added a $5 thing I've been eyeing for a while
Don't really need it, but ok :\

3:30 PM
But you did not tell WHY , or what you get when you get to 25?

1 hour later…
Bob
4:53 PM
@Psycogeek It's a secret :P

This guy really doesn't know how to internet: superuser.com/posts/942270/revisions
> i mean i just asked a question. but you guys can't answer it. it should be your reputation that goes down

Ell
@ThatBrazilianGuy you can do this with a wired bridge, can you not?

5:08 PM
I'm still not sure what he wants. But if he's got a wired connection to his PC, yes, he can create a new wifi connection from his PC and use bridging to link both incoming and outgoing connections.
I've done so in Fedora. Not so easy on Ubuntu.

Ell
I never had trouble with it actually
on ubuntu I mean

It's even easier to bridge incoming wifi and outgoing wired.
@Ell The "create a new wifi" (and use it as an AP) on Ubuntu is not so straightforward.
Fedora is just a couple clicks.

Ell
I just remember doing Add Bridge or something such vOv it was years ago anyway
I think I got lucky with a supported wifi chipset also

@ThatBrazilianGuy if he thinks he is talking to dummies, his initial question wasnt very good, still no OS is shown in the question.
the answer keeps bending to his every whim and change and added info, he could have a little respect for people at least trying .

5:34 PM
" I'm triple booting windows 8.1 and Kali and Ubuntu 15.04" OOOhhh, like that wont complicate setting up bridging or sharing :-)

6:17 PM
Quick question for Windows Insiders.
Does Windows-S still bring up search, or do I have to go to Cortana (Windows-C) for that?
Seems it's the latter.
The charms are gone in Windows 10 and that includes the Search charm.

Just installed Adblock Plus, but only to block certain very specific content, not advertising in general.
The default EasyList has been disabled, although malware domains are blocked.
I respect webmasters' right to run ads, but a few items are expected to be blocked.
Bounce Exchange is getting blocked.
Everything else except for malware domains are currently allowed.

7:50 PM
Good news: Windows 10 "supported lifetime" is going to be a full 5+5.
Your device will remain supported as long as it can accept the latest updates.
> A device needs to install the latest update to remain supported. Updates may include new features, fixes (security and/or non-security), or a combination of both. Not all features in an update will work on all devices. A device may not be able to receive updates if the device hardware is incompatible, lacking current drivers, or otherwise outside of the Original Equipment Manufacturer’s (“OEM”) support period.
> Update availability may vary, for example by country, region, network connectivity, mobile operator (e.g., for cellular-capable devices), or hardware capabilities (including, e.g., free disk space).

8:48 PM
New car!
(old car was a 25 year old golf II)

what is it Golf V ???

9:08 PM
Proposal for Power Users : it is about the mobile part that Super User rejects.

9:23 PM
@user2284570 Me being critical , , , how is that going to help, when knowing SE they will be tossing stuff out left and right again because it doesnt meet that definition :-( Blasted people just need a "Everything else Computers" where the base Goal it to include not disclude.
Everything else computer and microcontroller like :-)

@Psycogeek No Microcontroller is about electronics. the site is for Power Users. The same way would rejects question about reprogramming the main board µc on PCs.
@Psycogeek : I don’t understand what you mean.
0
A: Are questions about Chrome OS on-topic?

user2284570I think we should apply the same usual behavior of Super User. Do not allow computing question as long they are not related to IA-32 PC hardware even if there are no other place on SE. So Delete questions when they don’t involve IA-32 PC hardware. The same way we do for ᴊ2ᴍᴇ Webᴏs; ɪos; and andr...

Each site has to have a UserBase too that sticks around because there is Way More going on that they end up being interested in. the more Microsite they make a SE site the less users exist to be hanging around reading stuff .
The smaller the UserBase is the more anything will get answered by 1-2 people, who may not only, Not have all the answers in the world, but without any other opinions or options, it would be very limited information.

@Psycogeek Yes and this site covers entirely the scope of several others launched sites. I can’t see how it is too narrow.
I might say even too broad. But SU is already about that with PC hardware whatever the OS/software is.

@user2284570 SU is not narrow at all, and could have been like 20 times wider. It was the people, who contracted/restricted/condemed any expansion beyond what was defined.
Even every Area51 site Begins by bitching about questions that do not fit the definition of the site.

9:39 PM
@Psycogeek I didn’t say that “I might say even too broad. But SU is already about…”. Are you reading me correctly ?

@user2284570 And there we are already, because in some peoples opinion "strictly hardware" gets discluded at SU. So a Broad proposal for "all computer hardware" would even be workable.

@Psycogeek : this is a proposal about "all mobile computer hardware and software OSes"

@user2284570 I understand what you are saying, I am saying to observe ALSO how things in reality , that have had 5 year lifes , get restricted
@user2284570 Back up here, your trying to sell a "Home appliance" computer site, but you (yourself) didnt you just say that my microcontroller mini computer thing that i want to use Doesnt Apply?
What about my Mini media box computer ?
The possibilites are either very expancive and inclusive, or you end up with people bitching and moaning, and a small user base, and people often getting way better "total information" (which can include a lot of dribble) from other places.

10:08 PM
Take this perfect example :-) discuss.area51.stackexchange.com/questions/21107/… The site is called what? "hardware Recommendations" and the first thing they do is stop all "recommendations" which by default ARE opinion. Are these people seriously thinking that anyone is going to stick around that bloody place if a "recommendation" can't even be made , without someone bitching about it.
And why even did they call it hardware recommendations, when an "all about computer hardware" site would have been . . . well all about all the computerised hardware out there :-) and not about Bitching and moaning about what is and isnt allowable.
At some point you have to wonder if the intent of the SEmicrosites, isn't to get out of beta :-) isnt to have a whole lot of databased valuable information, and millions of users, but to be some leader who can control what everyone does. a Little island out there they can own, and be king of . (ok did i go a bit overboard this time :-)

10:35 PM
No more annoying Bounce Exchange popups!

area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/86353/hackoverflow another good one, Were the "White Hat" hackers , but were not here to discuss protecting anything ;-) , preventing hacks is off topic, stopping viruses is off topic, that belongs on "security" etc. uhh then mayby you should instead setup a Black Hat hacking site
If that was my network, the hackers would be presenting themseves as being an assett to a community , and not a detriment in a white sheet (with a pointy hat on top :-) Just because there are some laws that exist in various countries that do not allow your network to be party to creations of terrorising computers.
(although slyly disguising that as an analisis of security and vulnerability is allowed)

1 hour later…
11:50 PM
hm. My speakers are making strange noises.

the ones you have not yet (but wanted to) replace?

yup
Its not obvious in normal use - you can BARELY hear it in normal levels, and this is it turned up to 11 maximum
