AFK.

jrg
Ok, apparently I can invite people to bricks.se - if you're interested, let me know and I'll invite you.

12:41 AM
@jrg It's really reserved for experts. People who are prominent in that community but didn't make it into the private beta

jrg
@MarcoCeppi Yeah, true.

So, if you're going to hand out invites (which you totally can!) make sure people at least post a little :) otherwise it'll skew the private beta numbers

jrg
Eek, that sounds horrible.

1:15 AM
that means not inviting people like me to lurk

(Sorry, didn't mean to address that one to Marco.)

2:04 AM
@GeorgeEdison I'm going afk for a few minutes, but I want to ask get your advice on something :)

2:16 AM
Sure.

2:40 AM
@GeorgeEdison sorry if I interrupted you.

@RolandTaylor No problem. I was just away for a second.
I'm answering your question now.

3:08 AM
I wish I knew why FlackBot isn't working.

3:48 AM
Hello all
:"( I miss flacky

Me too... I wish I knew why he wasn't working.

@GeorgeEdison Umm.. weird question, did you restart him?
@Jacob Please, I need you (not FlackBot)

Yes, but the problem is that FlackBot isn't seeing any of the incoming chat messages for some reason.

@GeorgeEdison I wanted to ask you this A WHOLE LOT TIME:
How does he read?
Does he attach to a Browser process?

He is a Qt application with an embedded instance of the WebKit rendering engine (the same engine used in Google Chrome).
From there, some JavaScript code is injected into the page after it loads that captures all network requests made by the chat page.
The response is examined for the messages posted to chat and he acts on them accordingly.

3:59 AM
@GeorgeEdison I know im asking for much , but can i have that code? :)

Which part?

the information gathering part
Actually The way my mass ping script worked was to capture a screenie on theleft of the chat

Your mass ping script?

,pass it on SimpleOCR
and eliminate dupes
And add an "@" sign before
and paste all the data into the chatbox
@GeorgeEdison Yeah, the one Marco Despises ;)

I don't think I ever saw that one.
@AmithKK: Here you go: paste.ubuntu.com/719394
That's most of it. Enjoy!

4:06 AM
Hello! Just a quick question. Has anyone faced a problem, where an external drive cannot be written to from Windows, because it has been previously used in Ubuntu?

@KaustubhP What filesystem?

@GeorgeEdison 3 partitions on the external, all NTFS.

Hmmm... there can be problems if you hibernate Windows, boot Ubuntu and mount the drive read/write, and then boot Windows again.
Did you use hibernate at all on Windows?

@AmithKK Er... none of us can read that.
Here, let me fix it for you.

4:09 AM
@GeorgeEdison Not at all. Ever.

@GeorgeEdison You're not in the private beta?

@AmithKK There, now people can read it no matter if they're part of the beta or not!
@KaustubhP Hmm... can you see the drive in the device manager?

@GeorgeEdison Aha! Its a bug?

@AmithKK No, it's not a bug.

@GeorgeEdison Yes. I can see it. Its read-only.

4:11 AM
Oh, so it shows up as a drive, but it's mounted read-only?

@GeorgeEdison That code you gave me seems like almost all "human" functions of flacky

What do you mean?

Wait, flacky can look up tweets?
This Code is GOLD
How much time did you take?

@GeorgeEdison George is your server up?

@Jacob Yes.

4:14 AM
@GeorgeEdison Yes, exactly. I am pretty screwed. My disks are failing, and I need to move all the stuff. The problem is, the failing disk is not detected in Ubuntu. I get a mount error while booting Ubuntu. And the failing disk is detected in Windows, but I cant get to mount the external.

@GeorgeEdison Good, I'm extremely sick and feel asleep trying to reboot it. Sorry about that.

@Jacob I have something to ask to you :) . But due to somethings I cant discuss on SE, Can we please go to gchat

@Jacob Oh don't worry about it. Hope you're feeling better soon.

@Jacob Hope you feel better soon!

@AmithKK Jacob@JacobJernigan.com

4:15 AM
@GeorgeEdison LOL Flacky has a function to star
@Jacob ok, will contact :)

@AmithKK It's commented out :)

@GeorgeEdison I saw
Get me, Im not too good in java

@AmithKK (script)

(by not too good I mean I dont code)
How do i run this code?

What code?

4:17 AM
@GeorgeEdison Flacky's
:P

@AmithKK no messages

@Jacob I did not start :P

@AmithKK You're missing three key parts:
- FlackBot's account.

Why is it http://askubuntu.com instead of http://ask.ubuntu.com? http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/1927/why-is-it-askubuntu-com-instead-of-ask-ubuntu-com

@AmithKK That was my sly method to ask you to hurry. :)

4:19 AM
- A bunch of functions that communicate with APIs.
- The Qt app with WebKit.

@AmithKK still nothing :)

Sent
@GeorgeEdison I can use my account temporarily, right?
@GeorgeEdison Arent those the "secret magic non FOSS apis" :P

@AmithKK No, because you don't have the other two missing parts.

@AmithKK Yeah, no problem, I'll set it up later.

@Jacob Many thanks!
@GeorgeEdison Can i get your gmail?

what happens here? will I get the bounty that I assigned myself?
Also: can someone suggest a better title for that? Its too generic and was answered after a lot of troubleshooting so I cant figure out a better fit

12:23 PM
@brunopereira81 Bounty will be lost. Check the FAQ.

@Oxwivi lost as in gone or lost as in will return to you?

Gone. But wait, it's your bounty on someone else's question.

yeah, it was taking a bit long so I offered one to see if someone had any ideas

The FAQ doesn't explicitly mention any situation like that, but the basic mechanic is that you can't get your own bounty.
Lemme check to make sure.

went tru FAQ now, didnt see anything :S dont want to loose my rep if I was the one answering it :P

@brunopereira81 You get disheartened quite easily, don't you? That's the only question you posted, and you're already getting sad despite it getting votes and edited.

@Oxwivi I joke a lot, dont take it so serious ;)

12:38 PM
It's got attention, but nobody knows the solution yet, maybe you should suggest something.
@brunopereira81 I like jokes a lot, but it's difficult figuring it out on the interwebz, see? :(

@brunopereira81 Everybody, who dedicate their time to internetworks, are bound to cross that line. :D

@Oxwivi lol, agree. but next time dont be so surprised with me. this happens all the time: my gf always double checks my statement for sarcasm :P

@brunopereira81 Not rude. Just precise.

@brunopereira81 Your GF double-checks what you say? Interesting.

There is nothing wrong with being precise/accurate, everything wrong with being a jerk about it.

Bounty offered: What icon does Unity use for an application? http://askubuntu.com/questions/70950/what-icon-does-unity-use-for-an-application #unity

@Oxwivi yeah :D

@brunopereira81 When doing a back-and-forth in a question comment try to make sure the user updates their question with what they tried, that way people won't have to read 20+ comments to understand where the question stands. Editing also helps to bump the question, getting more eyes on the issue.

@MarcoCeppi I normally edit the title/body of the question when the user marks it answered, in this case I will have to w8 for it even tough I think the answer is correct (I could reproduce it with what is written on comments), after he says that was it ill edit the answer asap.

Not the answer, the question itself. There is a lot of great information in the question's comments that aren't in the question body
I believe your workflow for updating the answer is accurate, I was speaking with regards to the actual question
@brunopereira81 That's ineffective, it doesn't help new users get the information they need to help contribute to a solution. You should really try to get the question asker to do it anyways - the more we ingrain how to use the system to users the better this process will be

1:26 PM
@MarcoCeppi I am just new to AU as you probably know and I ask a lot of (sometimes not so useful) information, I am realyl just making sure that the information asked and supplied made any sense to the question and the final answer. Any ways, its clear enough, will edit questions and add all the information necessary when that is supplied on the comments.

@brunopereira81 Information is power! It's hard to know what's not useful information until a solution is found, so I understand your logic in editing after a solution is found. Ideally all the information discovered via research should be included in the question, it's easy to remove it later if it's truly not useful. :)
Finally, prod the actual question asker to do it - you're busy enough trying to solve people's problems, let them at least pull their own weight :D

@MarcoCeppi got it ;)

trying to make a updatable background for askubuntu meta with python, the idea is to download the faces of all user that are on the first page, sort out the ones that have the default photo, insert a default "no photo" instead and create the background based on that, I have managed to download all the photos automatically already but I am stuck on trying to find a lib that allows me to created the actual file. I want to do it on python so I can develop my skills a bit, any ideas?
ps: im really an authentic noob in python so dont go so fast

I wanted to know the answer to this question.
I hate the way moderators abuse of their power on this site.
this was more than a legitimate question...

@pedrorolo That question was asked when 11.10 was in Alpha still. As per the sites FAQ Alpha and beta related questions are off topic
If you look, there are several other questions which already cover how to achieve this task.

then it should be now open.
;-)

@pedrorolo Furthermore, it has an answer. So what is the real issue?

@pedrorolo Then update your question saying you're using a normal release then flag it for moderator attention. And read the FAQs. The moderator should've linked to the FAQ as well to explain why it was closed.

one answer is not enough

mcheccybOracle will not be providing Java 6 in the partner repository anymore I was just wondering if there's a ppa, or another way to install it in 11.10? Specifically sun-java6-jre

thank you.

Instead of jumping into chat, continuing your accusations that moderators are abusing power, please try to instead form your questions in a more constructive fashion.

and, please close less questions

There are a few topics on meta about how to handle this

No, please close questions with links to FAQ explaining why.

4:08 PM
@Oxwivi I agree

compared to Stackoverflow, , askubuntu looks like the 3rd Reich

@pedrorolo no one is abusing power (except Marco Ceppi ;) who will kick me for saying that (you will right?) :D)

@pedrorolo If you have an issue, you can always open a discussion on meta

Q: How can I get the Skype notification back in the system tray?

Peter HovenI am running 11.04. I have Skype running but it does not show up in the notification tray. It was working until I added Skype to auto-start when I log in. Does anyone know how to make it reappear?

@MarcoCeppi Thank you, is it the same for 11.10? I didn't have this problem in 11.04

@Gigili no it's not a bug
Install sni-qt
and then run skype again

4:16 PM
@Gigili Should be

@RolandTaylor Great, I'll do it. Thank you.

and my older cousin brother is AWESOME

@RolandTaylor Um, it's installed. Should I reinstall?

reinstall skype?
no...

No, the package you said

4:24 PM
run killall skype and launch skype again
if that doesn't work, log out and log in, then launch skype

Also, I've done what the answer says, didn't fix the problem.
That's what I do, restart .. There's not solution? weird =\

@Gigili Did you restart you system?

log out and log back in please
after installing sni-qt skype will have an indicator.

@Gigili Are you on Unity 2d or 3d?

(I can tell Gigili is not planning to log out and log back in any time today).

@AmithKK No, log out only, this time.
@RolandTaylor It was installed before.

@pedrorolo Please try to remember what we said to you last time you accused us of breaking various rules, hearts and codes of conduct. We take it pretty seriously and won't tolerate another baseless and undocumented series of accusations.

is this 64bit Ubuntu btw?

Yes

definitely - reinstall skype :)

4:30 PM
Uhum, I will try that too. Thank you for your time.

if you don't, it will eat thousands of innocent kittens worldwide :D
@Gigili you're welcome :D
The reason Skype will give trouble is because 11.10 now uses multiarch (32bit apps and libraries are installed straight on to the system without the need for special magic) for most 32bit applications, and Skype needs to be installed correctly in order to stop attempting to use magic in this magic-free world :)

Magic-free or magic-based?

magic free :)
that's a friendly way of avoiding talking about the technical details of the whole thing (it's rather boring)

@RolandTaylor True

I see
Doesn't sound friendly, BTW.
