No operating system detected at boot, how can I retrieve my data? http://askubuntu.com/questions/72152/no-operating-system-detected-at-boot-how-can-i-retrieve-my-data #unity
Hello! Just a quick question. Has anyone faced a problem, where an external drive cannot be written to from Windows, because it has been previously used in Ubuntu?
@GeorgeEdison Yes, exactly. I am pretty screwed. My disks are failing, and I need to move all the stuff. The problem is, the failing disk is not detected in Ubuntu. I get a mount error while booting Ubuntu. And the failing disk is detected in Windows, but I cant get to mount the external.
Why is it http://askubuntu.com instead of http://ask.ubuntu.com? http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/1927/why-is-it-askubuntu-com-instead-of-ask-ubuntu-com

Is there a better way to answer the "upgraded and my 'random graphics maker string here' driver stopped working" (or any other derivatives of hardware category as long as its frequent)?
I have seen that some of you answer your own questions with known information, can a big post with some of the...
@brunopereira81 You get disheartened quite easily, don't you? That's the only question you posted, and you're already getting sad despite it getting votes and edited.
@Oxwivi I know, im really not worried. Agree who reads chats does not see faces and I tend to cross the line between my sarcasm and my normal replies a lot (even talking face to face)
You need to do the following, on the terminal type sudo visudo and add a line like this at the end of the file specifying the commands you want to run without typing the sudo password (I suggest you use each command you want to use in the program and not just allow all programs to be executed by ...
@Oxwivi oh well, I know that but sort was in the middle of a lot of things (some of those questions were made while driving on the mobile :P with the car stopped in traffic ofc)
@brunopereira81 When doing a back-and-forth in a question comment try to make sure the user updates their question with what they tried, that way people won't have to read 20+ comments to understand where the question stands. Editing also helps to bump the question, getting more eyes on the issue.
@MarcoCeppi I normally edit the title/body of the question when the user marks it answered, in this case I will have to w8 for it even tough I think the answer is correct (I could reproduce it with what is written on comments), after he says that was it ill edit the answer asap.
Not the answer, the question itself. There is a lot of great information in the question's comments that aren't in the question body
I believe your workflow for updating the answer is accurate, I was speaking with regards to the actual question
@brunopereira81 That's ineffective, it doesn't help new users get the information they need to help contribute to a solution. You should really try to get the question asker to do it anyways - the more we ingrain how to use the system to users the better this process will be
@MarcoCeppi I am just new to AU as you probably know and I ask a lot of (sometimes not so useful) information, I am realyl just making sure that the information asked and supplied made any sense to the question and the final answer. Any ways, its clear enough, will edit questions and add all the information necessary when that is supplied on the comments.
@brunopereira81 Information is power! It's hard to know what's not useful information until a solution is found, so I understand your logic in editing after a solution is found. Ideally all the information discovered via research should be included in the question, it's easy to remove it later if it's truly not useful. :)
Finally, prod the actual question asker to do it - you're busy enough trying to solve people's problems, let them at least pull their own weight :D
trying to make a updatable background for askubuntu meta with python, the idea is to download the faces of all user that are on the first page, sort out the ones that have the default photo, insert a default "no photo" instead and create the background based on that, I have managed to download all the photos automatically already but I am stuck on trying to find a lib that allows me to created the actual file. I want to do it on python so I can develop my skills a bit, any ideas?
ps: im really an authentic noob in python so dont go so fast
@pedrorolo Then update your question saying you're using a normal release then flag it for moderator attention. And read the FAQs. The moderator should've linked to the FAQ as well to explain why it was closed.
Oracle will not be providing Java 6 in the partner repository anymore I was just wondering if there's a ppa, or another way to install it in 11.10?
Specifically sun-java6-jre
Can you answer this? How can I customize my themes in Ubuntu 11.10? http://askubuntu.com/questions/68861/how-can-i-customize-my-themes-in-ubuntu-11-10 #themes
Hey all, I have a problem with skype on 11.10 which I didn't have , When I close it , it doesn't appear anywhere as "running app" so I cannot reopen it .. Is it a bug?
I am running 11.04. I have Skype running but it does not show up in the notification tray. It was working until I added Skype to auto-start when I log in. Does anyone know how to make it reappear?
@pedrorolo Please try to remember what we said to you last time you accused us of breaking various rules, hearts and codes of conduct. We take it pretty seriously and won't tolerate another baseless and undocumented series of accusations.
if you don't, it will eat thousands of innocent kittens worldwide :D
@Gigili you're welcome :D
The reason Skype will give trouble is because 11.10 now uses multiarch (32bit apps and libraries are installed straight on to the system without the need for special magic) for most 32bit applications, and Skype needs to be installed correctly in order to stop attempting to use magic in this magic-free world :)
I am running Linux Mint 11 on my notebook, which is basically a variation of Ubuntu. I have been hearing a popping noise in the speakers ever since I installed the OS, but just now realizing that the popping sound only happens on battery power. This noise is driving me insane and even happens whe...
However, I stick to the straight and narrow path in terms of software I install, so it's entirely likely I haven't seen it simply because I don't go into places like that.
Ubuntu comes by default with VINAGRE (Client) which gives you VNC and SSH remote access support. In your case VNC will give the remote desktop access you want. You only need to configure a VNC server in the other end. If it is another Ubuntu PC then it comes already with VINO (Server) which you c...
I'm looking for ways to blacklist packages from being suggested for update by the update manager.

had a similar issue like this the other day, a guy asks about something for 64bit, another one replies a solution for 32bits, fist guys accepts it, marks it correct and then opens a similar one asking for a solution to the same problem... -.-
Preventing a package from being installed is called "package holding" and it is very simple to do:
echo package_name hold | dpkg --set-selections
...where *package_name* is the name of the package you want to prevent from installation.
Note: the above command assumes root privileges. In othe...
@htorque Could you imagine what would happen if something like, the idea of a "Desktop" (IE, the place where you put files on your monitor) was patented?
I mounted a Windows share to my Ubuntu 11.10 system via adding the following line to the /etc/fstab:
//serveraddr/sharedfolder /mnt/foldername/ smbfs credentials=/home/myname/.smbpasswd 0 0
using the tutorial here.
But there's a problem with the permissions. The owner of the mount folder is ro...
