@MonicaCellio we are brilliant! :P
793 clicks for that ad BTW

@AnnonomusPenguin whoa. I hadn't even looked at the stats.

Workplace has 613

We need some more questions that tie into the two we're advertising (the UX one and the Workplace one). We want those people to find other questions on those tags that interest them.

It seems like this ad is a lot more effective. The Arqade one only has 96 :/
Even the Wordpress one only has 48.

@AnnonomusPenguin bummer!
So, it looks like people click on specific questions. (A) let's identify some other specific questions and communities where they'd be interesting, and (B) let's make sure those questions aren't one-shots (i.e. there's stuff to keep visitors here who come in via those questions).

2:47 AM
I wonder if the conversion rate for that is as big as a more traditional advertisement. I don't know how we could measure this, though.

No idea, unfortunately.

Even though, if it was 25% of a traditional ad, we'd still be better off.
@MonicaCellio I'm not exactly sure what you mean by one-shot in this context. I mean we're presenting them with an on topic question that is a.) related to something the do and/or b.) interesting to them.

3:01 AM
@AnnonomusPenguin right, that's the draw. Now the next step: they get here, they like that question, and they decide to look around: will they easily find more questions they're interested in? We should look at what else turns up for the tags that those questions have -- do what we can to tidy up if needed, fill gaps if we think of new questions in those areas, etc.
"We miss you, please come back" has two tags. has 4 questions; has 1. Maybe our "lure" question needs a site-promotion tag? (Whatever our tag is for that; need to look.) Are there more questions we should be asking about communication or inactive users? It'd be great if we had a nice juicy UX question for them to answer.

@MonicaCellio I see what you mean. I'm just saying that it would be worthwhile to use a question that would give us 500 clicks that doesn't have as much of a developed set of questions similar to it than another question that would give us 50 clicks but with a fair amount more of similar questions. At the same time, yes, your right; we don't want an "island question" advertised
It's all trade offs :)

Right, agreed. I'm not saying we shouldn't also develop other ads; yes we should. I'm only trying to drill down on the two specific-question ads that we're currently running, and (err) thinking about the UX of that for the people who follow those links.

@MonicaCellio like, literally, the tag?
Wait....
I just realized oneboxing is fixed?!?!

has 8 questions, which all seem reasonable. I'm going to add it.
@AnnonomusPenguin , it seems to be.

Sorry, I got distracted there. Oneboxing seems to be fixed. Let me try meta.
Give me literally one minute
Oh right, it was only meta that was broken :(
Ok, focusing here.

3:07 AM
@AnnonomusPenguin I thought it worked except for meta.
Yeah, that. Oh well; would've been nice if that were fixed.

@MonicaCellio read two messages down :)

@AnnonomusPenguin read my next one. :-)

@MonicaCellio You got me there :)
@MonicaCellio good idea

@AnnonomusPenguin I added the tag. Do you have the Workplace question handy? Let's look at it now.

10
Q: How to deal with a stubborn person who thinks they are perfect?

ZerotimeAs the title already mentions I have a problem with a so-called "perfect" person. I'm part of a studying community in which every age is allowed. So we are a really mixed community, we have older and younger ones. We are no troublemakers and usually try to prevent any needless disputes. Since we...

I think we need to somehow emphasize that offices are types of communities
Although, while not taking away from The Workplace

3:18 AM
"problem-users", "new-users" (and we have other "user" tags) -- I wonder if we should be calling those "members"?

3:39 AM
@MonicaCellio I think members would be better
Either that or comrade ;-)

@AnnonomusPenguin I've got to drop off now, but let's get that onto meta tomorrow to get more eyeballs on it. (And maybe others will drop by chat and can help look over the Workplace-targeted question and the questions on its tags.)
@AnnonomusPenguin yeah, err, let's do the other one. :-)

Thanks for the chat tonight. TTYL! Others, please do jump in. :-)

I seem to have missed this evening's conversation.
Next time...
Oh. I missed a lot. I think I'll follow up on it in the morning with the meta thread

@MonicaCellio I think "members" make sense, especially if we start getting more "real world" questions. I wouldn't consider neighbors "Users" of a community, but they are "members" of a community.
@AnnonomusPenguin ^

1:38 PM
@Andy Agreed 100%.
Also it puts a stress on communities and not just users (less confusion on the UX one)

2:18 PM
@Andy mailing lists, too, use the term "members" more than "users" in my experience. We're about community-building; communities have members.

Should there be any synonyms for user* tags to new member (or member*) tags?
That can go in the meta post, but something to consider

Probably, yes -- people do think of "users" sometimes, so let's use synonyms to get everybody to the same tag set.
@Andy are you working on a meta post? If so, thanks!

I'm not yet. I have a database issue at work this morning. I get the pleasure of dealing with upset users and confused DBAs.
This is me today:
Hopefully around lunch time we'll have this cleaned up though

2:35 PM
@Andy heh. Good luck with that!

2 hours later…
4:15 PM
@Andy you mean you have angry members???? :P

Ok. What do we want the scope of this proposal to be? Are we renaming all user-* tags to member-* tags? Are we being selective? Can some of the tags drop the "user"/"member" portion entirely?
That's a tiny one box
Those are our user tags
Ones that I think can be renamed/synonymized: , ,
Ones that shouldn't be changed:
One that maybe able to drop the prefix: -> ?
I'm not sure what to do with ,
This is the post thus far...no details on the proposal itself, but it does have some of my thoughts on why I think 'members' is better than 'users'.
	Make [users] into [members]
	---

	It was [suggested][1] in the chatroom that many of our `users` tags should be renamed to `members`. I feel, "members" makes sense, especially as we consider all the areas we cover for community building. [Neighbors][2] aren't "users" of a community, but they are "members" of a community.

	To me, "users" indicates someone is using software of some kind. They are "using" something to participate in the community. "Members" implies being a part of a group. You can be both a "user" and a "member", but within a community "member" is more encompassing.

@AnnonomusPenguin and @MonicaCellio My first thoughts are above. I'm looking for clarification on what you'd like to see in the user -> member proposal

@Andy That's a good idea. I think some of the tags should drop the “user” part and some should be renamed. We need a meta thread to hash it out.
@Andy I think you can post an open proposal: let's drop/rename some of the “user” tags, here's the list of them, which ones should we keep/rename/split/merge/…?
we might need a few more tags because some problems are specific to online communities, some to physical attendance, some to mandatory communities (neighbors, workplace, …), etc.

@Andy good intro. I think in some cases the "user" part can just drop off (I see @Gilles has suggested that too). Working from your list:
user-behavior -> behavior
problem-users -> problem-members? (tag might need to be rethought, but maybe separate that)
new-users -> new-members
user-retention -> retention
user-engagement -> engagement? (review this tag)
established-users -> experienced-members (changed first word b/c "established" is SE slang, really)
inactive-users -> inactive-members
expert-users -> experts
user-experience - no change (that's a technical term)
I took a quick look through problem-users; I think we might need to refactor that (in a separate meta post). Related concepts are conflict-resolution, bullying, disciplinary-actions -- we may need a general bucket for questions about "dealing with people who are disrupting the community", but that tag should probably be dropped from some questions.

7:57 PM
@MonicaCellio I'll let you propose that one :) I think I've got two to work on right now. One for dropping "users" entirely from some tags and one for renamed "users" to "members"

@Andy yeah, I'm going to hold off (let's not distract from the more-straightforward change, or at least I hope it's straightforward). Rename it for now, and separately I'll do more of an analysis and propose a refactoring later.

Works for me

I think there are a subset of tags that we can make easier to use by dropping the "users" portion of the tag. I propose the following: user-retention be renamed to retention (16 existing questions) I think the "user" is implied and not needed. When a question is about retention, it is about how a user (or group of users) can be retained expert-users be renamed t
