I have read quite a bit of feminist literature (years ago, but it hasn't changed so much since then), and while I have my own criticisms of some of their points (e.g. improper use of statistics for things like quantifying the gender wage-gap), overall I generally agree with them on many issues including the objectification of women in modern culture.

It's more about how it only shows girls. No guys, no background images, nothing but girls. Not all anime is objectifying, but if a media depicts only one gender, that'd be a cause for concern. Even if they are 2D, they'd still be female and 3D women are, well, female too.

@Frosteeze Fair enough. All I'm really saying is that I never saw it that way. The use of "male" and "female" to describe 2D characters has about as much relation to 3D humans as it does to male and female plugs in 3D to me. If anything, I identify more with female anime characters than male ones, though I never really thought of either of them as particularly close to 3D humans, and it's surprising to me that other people do think of it that way.

But I'm not going to say that they're wrong, just that their thinking is very different from mine.

@LoganM if possible with image uploading to @Taisho i would like to see some sort of user restriction and review where as users who don't meet a Graduated Established User level can't uploaded image so we don't get trolls and obviously destructive users ruining it and review images so @Taisho wont post unless the images has been reviewed considering there is a grey area between SFW and NSFW which the dividing line is opinionated

@Memor-X I can't say for certain, but I believe it's currently restricted to room owners and mods. If it isn't, it should be, at least as the default. I think there's also some record of who uploads what, so if a user does upload a bunch of inappropriate stuff, it can be removed (at least in principle).

@Hakase is the one who knows about the internals though. I just know how to upload.

Of course, if someone who isn't a mod or room owner wants to upload, we can accommodate that, either by giving them permissions or by uploading it through an account with privileges. It's just to prevent someone from coming in here with a 20-rep account and uploading a thousand porn images or something stupid like that.

BL is fine with me, so long as it's appropriate enough for chat.

@Frosteeze Last I checked, our site was 94% male. By comparison, SO was 92%.

There are SE sites with a lot of women (e.g. Cooking has a majority) but we aren't one of them.

But we're also not the most masculine site by a long shot; some had over 98% male.

@ton.yeung It's one extra step. You can do all of them in a batch with imagemagick

So we're at 177 male index score. I forget exactly how it works, but higher score means a larger fraction of our user base is male, and 200 is the highest possible, and 100 is balanced evenly. For comparison, SO is at 183, Gaming is at 179, and Code Golf is 189. SE as a whole (excluding the separate domain sites like SO and AU) is 149. So we're more male than average, but not the most by any means.

By "gender balance", do you mean closer to the average demographics of the broader anime community (which is majority male, though perhaps less strongly than our site is), or closer to the average worldwide demographics of close to 50/50?

I'm more interested in the former than the latter.

That's a rather small and not necessarily representative sample though.

My college was around 60% female undergrads, and several of the officers were female, so there's a bias in the other direction too.

Men are born at a slightly higher rate (~7% more), but tend to die a bit younger than women (due to war and lower life expectancy).
