Q: Very slow graph walking. Can you give me hints to make it much faster?

TomI've a problem. My code is very-very slow. Could you give me hints how I can make it much faster? The function is: for (stdext::hash_map<unsigned __int32, CVertex*>::iterator it1 = graph.begin(); it1 != graph.end(); it1++) { for (std::vector<CVertex*>::iterator it2 = it1->second->getNeighbo...

@skiwi - got a sec?
    private static final Comparator<String> LONGEST_FIRST = buildComparator();
    private static Comparator<String> buildComparator() {
        Comparator<String> byLength = Comparator.comparingInt(value -> -1 * value.length());
        return byLength.thenComparing(Comparator.naturalOrder());
    }
^^^ How to make that a Java-8 1-liner?
I cannot get the following to compile:
private static final Comparator<String> LONGEST_FIRST = Comparator.comparingInt(value -> -1 * value.length())
         .thenComparing(Comparator.naturalOrder());
It 'loses' the implied type of <String> On the comparator

Q: What is the most efficient method of performing the FIZZBUZZ test in SQL Server?

Max VernonThis may not be completely on-topic, however it's a slow day here. Is there a more efficient method of obtaining a list of numbers from 1 to 49 with a column containing the words FIZZ when the number can be evenly divided by 3, BUZZ when the number can be evenly divided by 5, and FIZZBUZZ when t...

Q: find directories containing jar files and call other program to scan them for vulnerable versions

mcgyver5I wrote a python script to collect a list of directories containing third party libraries and submit them all to dependency-check, a program that compares library versions to known-vulnerable third party libraries. Here are the tests: from unittest import TestCase import unittest import run_ch...

@Phrancis: thanks for posting a bounty on this question -- it was interesting and I'd have overlooked it otherwise!

A: Boost Python converter for std::tuple

EdwardThere is a way to simplify this by using only a single wrapper template. First, here's the single template: template <typename P, typename R, typename ...Args> struct tupleconvert_wrapper { P params; tupleconvert_wrapper(const P& _params):params(_params){} R delayed_dispatch() { re...

I'm here... now
@rolfl If nothing else fixes it (that is, two lines work), then use a <String> type witness
Java 8 is sometimes too powerful...
I've had occasions as well where the type was not captured correctly

@Malachi Not here. I made sure @Phrancis saw it though.

@RubberDuck I saw his comments on the question...lol

9:34 PM
Hahaha

Lol @phrancis clearly not! — Max Vernon 20 hours ago

I'm mistaken that interrupts = 16-bit assembly, right?

Yes -- interrupts are used on any machine including the OP's 32-bit Linux box.

@Edward I'm blown away the OP is still around after posting this to SO and being migrated over 2 years ago (see the other recent answer)

9:37 PM
I'm glad that misconception is finally cleared, then. I'll fix that part.

@Phrancis Yes, that's pretty nice, isn't it?
I was hoping somebody would post something like my answer so I'd learn a new technique.
But then I had some time and figured it out myself.
Fun!

@Edward Yes indeed. I'm not sure which to award, I might let it auto-award so the community decides.
Cuz I don't speak C++ lol.

@Phrancis My main reward was in figuring out an answer.
Although imaginary internet points are a valued resource, too.

@Edward I like your spirit :)

@Phrancis Speaking of spirits, is it time for champagne yet?
I started early and had some with lunch. :)

9:43 PM
@Edward 16:42 here... But I got some spiced rum to pass the time ;)

I have some eggnog that's in dire need of rum.

Oooohhhh I think I got some eggnog too

Actually, I'll have to see if the eggnog has gone bad -- I can optimize the recipe to just rum.

You would like my t-shirt right now, methinks. Let me see if I can selfie it

My daughter gave me this one for my birthday this year: image18.spreadshirt.com/image-server/v1/products/111630523/…

Love it!

@Edward Hahah nice
@Edward Perfect pun for heathen holiday fun ;)

New Year's Selfie!

A: Karate Chop Kata

RubberDuck Even though it matches the spec, Chop isn't a very good name for what this function does. IndexOf would be a better name. Ubound(Arr) gets called in this code a lot. It happens more than enough to declare a variable for it. All of the parameters are being implicitly passed ByRef which isn't nice...

If I'm not here to get my hat, HAPPY NEW YEAR CODE REVIEW!

Has anyone earned Resolution yet?

I haven't been here for a year, so I have no year-old comments to delete.

9:55 PM
@Edward You can delete any 2014 comments once it's 2015
(that's the idea behind it)

Aha!

I deleted several this morning because it usually works with a 24 hour grace period.

Not sure if you have to wait for Jan 1 0:00:00 UTC (probably)

It was at least 10.
Now I don't have many to delete.
I'll manage to scrounge up 10.
I wonder if comments bump posts?
I could go back to my oldest question and leave a couple comments on it, then delete them.

Comments don't bump posts.

10:02 PM
OK, I'm leaving some comments that are constructive, but unnecessary.
This way, they don't exactly detract from the site, if they don't add to the value.

Q: Name Filtering using a Trie

This is based on the question here: Name filtering in Java A Trie allows the prefix of terms to be used as a search mechanism. The Trie requires pre-processing the data in to a da...

Q: My script is about as scary as the XML it's reading

MalachiThis was a revision, made when the code failed after an update (at least that is what I think happened). So I fixed it and now it works, but I think that this code can be written better and more efficiently, and perhaps made easier to read. Note that VBScript/VBA/VB6 isn't (aren't) my primary la...

The edit for the title was done this year, but the question and the answer were from last year

My burning question of the day:

Q: would a perfectly clean and perfectly smooth champagne glass have no bubbles?

EdwardMy understanding is that nucleation sites for bubbles in a champagne glass are either due to defects in the glass or due to fibers in the glass. (See this article for details on that statement.) Does this imply that champagne poured into an absolutely clean and perfectly smooth glass would have ...

Q: Some guidance with Angular -too much logic in controller, not sure on next steps

Patrick E.I'm currently working on a newsfeed app (see it live here or its files on GitHub) that lets a user create a custom reddit feed. The user adds the subreddits they'd like to view, and then can view them in this Angular dashboard. I'd really appreciate any type of feedback on what I may improve on...

10:39 PM
I haven't selfied any of my questions with the fun named titles

@Edward I'm more curious whether there would be such a thing as "an absolutely clean and perfectly smooth glass" but it's certainly an interesting question!

@Phrancis I'm not - it is impossible.
You would have to polish it on at least the atomic scale, probably lower.
That glass would probably be worth more than all the diamonds in the world.

Yeah it'd certainly be valuable, though not sure not having your champagne foam would be worth all the diamonds in the world ;D
(I'll pick the latter, given the option - I can deal with that pesky foam ;)

@Hosch250 Interesting concept, otherwise just have a piece of glass that is minute (in the atomic scale). Isn't glass a crystalline structure, so, if you get just one crystal of riny proportions, each facet would be as smooth as is possible on the atomic level. Whether you count the atoms as blemishes, though, is a different question

Well, that wouldn't be able to hold champagne.
Also, it would probably be harder to get just one atom of glass than it would to polish a glass surface.
And the force required to hold that atom in place as the other atom(s) are stripped away would probably destroy it.
Unless, of course, you build it from scratch instead of stripping other atoms away.

10:49 PM
See, I work for IBM, and getting atomicly 'flat' strata is not as hard as you may think....

Isn't it?
Do you make hard drives?

@rolfl Atomically?

If you read the linked article from that question, defects below a certain size cannot act as bubble nucleation sites.

^^^ adding and messing with single atoms on an otherwise "Atomically" (thanks @Phrancis) flat surface

A boy and his atom -- one of my favorite short movies!

10:51 PM
That movie is badass

The kid looks a little like Lyle Lovett.

Q: Uploading multiple images using PHP

salepI literally spend my all day working on PHP and I think I figured it out, but I need some reviews in order to make my code secure & okay. I am asking you about functionality here. The code below works. index.php <form action="upload.php" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data"> <div id=...

off for a bit

Be sure to come back in an hour.

off for a zero bit, anyway. on for a set bit.

10:54 PM
Gates?

Yeah, positive logic gates anyway.

@CaptainObvious Really, you gotta bring up PHP now?
Let me also say that the Prettify for PHP is pretty crappy.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to everybody (I am UTC+1)

Happy new year.
Are you going to stay up until 1 AM to get the hat?

26rep from max..... just sayin....

11:06 PM
Do you want to hit it, or no?

Well, I sort of always do ;-)
It's going to be hard, by I may make legendary before valentine day.

I managed to squeeze in to 50K before XMas....

I gave an upvote too.

I'm only... darn, still 105 away.

11:08 PM
Well, thing is, that I am ramping up to lay down a lot of bounties ;-)

I would have given two, but the second would have just cancelled the first.
It was a t-n answer.
top-notch

Thanks santa's/

The flood should begin shortly.

@rolfl I really like that SQL answer

New year's yet? Nope. Be back for my hat.

11:09 PM
which one...?

I did the Lock-free Fibo.

@Phrancis The one to yours?

@RubberDuck 50 min.

No this one:

A: Is the usage of SQL Cursor appropriate here?

rolflThis code can be simplified a lot, and in to a single update without the cursor. This may be a problem, though if your transaction log is not large enough to accommodate a mass update to all your records. Right, how to simplify the update? First, build the case statement in to the @UserCodeList...

Ahh, that answer.
yes, it is a a massive difference.
Night&Day?

11:10 PM
(though, I do like yours to mine a lot, as evidenced by the +100 ;)

I believe the flood has begun.

@rolfl You must have a broken caps-lock key, though.

Copy/Paste misuse

Is it possible to star using the mobile version?

@janos You should find out before hand.
Anyway, you just need to get starred, you don't need to star.
Hi, @hwlau!

hi there

Coming for Mistletoe?

@janos I just did ;-)

Happy New Year all!

@skiwi happy new year to you too

6 more minutes.
I'll ping everyone at the time.

I don't just want to get started, I want to spread the hot too! (And it seems I cannot...)

@janos Don't think you can Star using the mobile app... I remember a Mug and a Duck repeatedly complaining about this (using the mobile app)

11:54 PM
We got a countdown? It's about that time.
