In the Summer Game Jam, games submitted earlier in the jam had more opportunity to receive votes*. Educated voting requires the ability to look at all Game Jam games side by side. I think the 2014 Anniversary Game Jam would benefit if voting on submissions was blocked until the end of the jam.

* I am concerned that earlier games were more likely to receive a vote for simply being early, rather than receiving a vote for being fun or cool. People would drop in to check out the game jam, upvote the current submissions, and potentially not return to judge the others that would be submitted later.

I'm about to format my entire drive on my laotop
Is there any way to do that while on that hard drive? Can I damage it that way?

MLM
@hasherr You can format in the OS installation

Oh so if I installed Ubuntu or something I could format it there?

MLM

Q: How to format my HDD when installing Ubuntu?

MaximHow do I format the hard drive on my machine before installing?

Thanks man

3:54 AM
@Costava I think that is an excellent idea, but I don't think it's technically feasible without creating a second thread for voting after the jam ends where we copy all of the answers over from the first to the second at the conclusion of the jam
Historically, I don't think that submission time is correlated with upvotes, but it's understandable that there could very likely be a few additional upvotes if the game is submitted early
eg: I've always submitted pretty late, and I think Ali submitted his game very last during the summer jam (or close to last)

4:16 AM
Come to think of it, we can run some SQL to see if people vote before the jam ends, then never come back to vote again

1 hour later…
5:18 AM
I want your help in this

5:53 AM
I have found many in unity but those are for 3d games
now work with 2d colliders
if you are unity guy then you can understand me easily

6:03 AM
@Noctrine AHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHH 60FPS YOUTUBE VIDEOS ARE OUT FOR EVERYONE!
on quality hit 1080@60
Render turned out nice.

@JohnMcDonald voting is anonymous
That said... I don't know if what's being asked is possible. I think if you lock a question from being voted on people are also unable to answer the question meaning people won't be able to submit which means we would need to be more flexible on late submissions, etc.
@Costava pinging you since it was your inquiry originally
But yeah I'm not sure if I'm right on what I said above but I have some degree of confidence that my statement is accurate. Maybe we could get a mod to confirm (I'll ask when / if I see someone today)
Overall the the jam is meant to be more fun than competition even though technically there is a winner and I personally wouldn't worry about it too much. That said, if people do feel it we are having problems with the format and the SE tools at hand aren't flexible enough to be the solution, maybe we need to open up discussion for an external platform again
@Almo Is this proper french? lol
Translate: je ne tu vu pas dans LoL
StackExchange is either sleeping or doesn't like me or I did it wrong :(
Aha! I misread "vu"

@SpartanDonut ha?
what's wrong?

Knowing that your french makes much more sense xD

my french? :O

Your french? You weren't speaking french

never
I never liked the sound of that language, why should I try learning and speaking it?

11:27 AM
I never said you should
Where are you getting these crazy ideas?

*meant would :P

My statement still stands lol
I'm excited to see what you make for the jam :D

"you weren't speaking french" doesn't that mean you expected me to speak it?
@SpartanDonut I'm excited too, though I'm not sure if I'll be able to do something good again :D

Alright lets break this down
my "Knowing that your french..." comment was still directed towards almo

ok:D

11:30 AM
You said "my french?"
To which I responded that you weren't speaking french

:D

Clear now?

yep :D

awesome

did you hear, win10 will come with a package manager

11:31 AM
I heard
I don't really know what that means to me as an end user

ever worked with nuget?

All the time
But that's as a developer

think of package manager as a nuget replacement for the whole system, not only VS

hmm
So where does the store fit in then?

you can simply request installation of FF for example, and i'll automatically download everything needed and then FF itself
@SpartanDonut not sure

11:33 AM
Although...

maybe it'll ask you to buy things that should be purchased during installation

I could easily automate system setup with such a thing

or maybe it'll only offer freeware products

Hard to say at this point I suppose

but anyway, it's real great news :D
@SpartanDonut I'm pretty sure there's only those two options, I mean you either have to buy things (which requires some user interaction) or completely ignore them
MS is not going to pay for your software needs

11:36 AM
Well when I asked about the store it was more because I see the store as a sort of "package manager"
just without the command line bits

if I'm not mistaken, I think I heard store is using package-manager internally to do the installation

That would make sense
I was speculating that but wasn't certain

I'm not certain either, it's just a rumor I think I heard :P

11:52 AM
I want some help in this
if you are unity guy then you can help me
I want C# implementation that work with 2d colliders

Where are you stuck? What have you tried?

I want algorithm to implement

Is there part of A* that you don't understand? Algorithms are language agnostic

12:07 PM
if you have any source that contain A* implementation in C# then please suggest me
I found one but that is in 3d
so I have to convert it to 2d
means it works only with 3d colliders

I think you are better off learning and understanding what A* is and how it works than trying to find a 2D Unity / C# implementation
If you understand the algorithm it wouldn't be too hard to write the code yourself
And it certainly will make debugging your pathfinding issues a lot easier than if you didn't understand

I don't have that much time for implementation also if I write then it might contains errors
so I have to spare some time for testing of A* implementation
if I found code that used by others then I don't have to spare any time for testing
because only that I am asking for implementation

I don't agree
That said I am unable to help you because any googling I do you could just as easily do as I don't have any implementations that I know of off hand

okay, I want your help only if you have some source ready made

Yeah I don't
Sorry

12:13 PM
otherwise I will ask to some other person
thanks for your help

Out of curiosity, how long have you been looking for this source code?

you are working in unity

Yeah I do Unity 2D stuff for hobby but I don't have any A* implementations done

last two days
if you have idea regarding this

You could have gotten pretty far implementing your own A* algorithm for 2 days worth of work ;)
My idea is "implement it yourself" - I feel like we're talking in circles

12:15 PM
then please give any hint
I am not pretty intelligent as like you
so I have not tried implementation of A*

Nice link

:)

12:30 PM
I have already read whole page
:)
but didn't implement algorithm manually

You could try to adapt the code for A* that you had found earlier.

@SpartanDonut I doubt this is correct, actually. A French speaker would probably know what you meant, but I suspect it's an "anglicism".
gotta hit the train; talk later:)

@Almo nah... my brain went weird when it saw tu vu because of the whole vous thing

oh right

@radical, thanks for suggestion, first I try to convert code into 2d that I have found.

12:41 PM
It's probably "Je ne vu pas tu dans lol" or something like that but overall I got it
two years of french and I didn't learn anything so I am just guessing really

If I didn't get success in that then trying to write code using following site

Where did you run into problems?
Nevermind... I misread

user92578
1:24 PM
I just found the PowerPoint where my teacher had copied this homework paper... with solutions :D

@SpartanDonut I just asked someone they say "je t'ai pas vu sur LoL"
or "je ne t'ai pas vu" for "proper" french
um
can someone give me a reason Jython exists?
Open source implementation of Python in Java
since Python is open source, can't you install python anywhere you can install java?

I imagine it's like Iron Python for .NET

why does that exist? to get access to .NET functions from python?

@Almo So you can use it easily inside JSP containers, for example.

ok that makes sense
seemed really weird at first glance :)
Yo dawg, we herd you like python so we put python in your java so you can java your pythons on a plane.

1:38 PM
The idea behind those language clones which compile to state machines (like the JRE or the .NET one) is to get easy access to the existing infrastructure, basically.

user92578
@Almo ever heard of PyPy?

user92578
python made in python

hahahaha
I had not

Hello! I'm working on a DirectX 11 game that uses lots of particles. Right now, I'm storing coordinates and velocities in a texture, which I sample in the vertex shader. Is this efficient? Is there a better way to do lots of particles in DirectX 11?

I don't know the answer off hand but I would throw the question right back to you, are you having performance problems? Have you profiled it at all and noticed a bottleneck you would like to remedy?

1:41 PM
First sounds fine in theory, but I have no idea about DirectX 11 details sadly.

how many mails are in your inbox on your work email account?
sorry
left out the important word in that sentence

is "almost all of them" an acceptable answer?

hahah yes
I have 11
I'm ruthless with my email inbox >:)

SpartanDonut, It works fine, I'm getting around 40 fps with a million particles on a relatively poorly performing and integrated video card, but I was wondering if I can squeeze more frames.

I don't really organize

1:44 PM
@belgin you got a game that needs 1,000,000 particles?

@belgin unless your code is immaculate you probably can but is there a point?

if your game has at most 100k particles at a time, you're probably good to go

^ and this poses the question - are you making an engine or a game?

I see, thanks!

:)

1:46 PM
Both, I guess. I'm not using a pre-made engine.

performance questions almost always have the same answer

@belgin in the case of "both" make an engine that fits your game and not necessarily every game

^
or you'll never finish the game
(or the engine)

OK, thank you

1:47 PM
Todders and Almo with the tag-team
sure :)

Also, does anyone here have any idea how they made that bendable mesh in Geometry Wars?

Like the background grid?

yes

Good question

I tried using a texture with a grid rendered on it, and perturbing that in a pixel shader, but it doesn't quite look good if it gets very perturbed.

1:49 PM
Site in need of maintanence, its flooding with terrible questions and duplicates

I would guess that there are a bunch of coordinates that draw a vector between them
and the coordinates are perturbed by gravity-type effects
it was VERY flexible, like each intersection was handled independently

@Shroeder farm rep and hop to it :P

so it behaved sort of like some kind of springy fluid

And use that flag

I am flagging:( It's all I can do
Well i can shout at my monitor

1:51 PM
hey there's a gold badge for 600 useful flags

I'm a mere pleb and can't do much

user92578
@SpartanDonut how do I farm rep with that?

user92578
needs more rep

@Tyyppi_77 two separate thoughts, not the same

I got close vote privileges on SO before I got anywhere near 600 though

1:51 PM
Thank you for your answers!

errr

I'm still below 300
sure, belgin

something like that

Got my base art done for items !!! now I can actually work on my game again
So I want a HP bubble on the bottom left, MP Bubble bottom right, exp bar bottom middle, but that will seal the deal on me going strictly pc, since i would be ruling out joysticks on phones that appear in the bottom-left/right, any good HUD displays used in other games that might help me out here?

2:09 PM
sounds like you can't put the bubbles there if you want phone
seems like not much of an answer, but I think that's what you're looking at
pixel art guns
awesome

2:22 PM
That is awesome
They got a release on that game?

I don't know

Looks like the pistol that shoots like a shotgun is OP

I think that's a sawed-off shotgun
will have some reload time

3:04 PM
WTF does "I can't sleep so I'm watching the beef" mean?

uh
¯\(°_o)/¯

Need context

It's from a tweet. The whole tweet is "I can't sleep so I'm watching the beef and looking for someone to talk to :("

it finally looks like something
now that artists are working on it, I'm feeling way better about this project :D

3:09 PM
neato
:)

Maybe beef is a way of saying BFF? I have no idea. ¯\(°_o)/¯

Made this last night. Works nicely as a wallpaper.

3:28 PM
@SpartanDonut yeah... I figured that one out. I think the only alternative is to copy game entries from one post to another, but like you said, it's more about fun than winning

@belgin I think i've read that they dedicated an enitre core of the 360 to that effect
one other for input and sound and such, and the rest of the game ran on the 3rd

MLM
@JohnMcDonald I made a graph to maybe prove peoples "think" observations

I don't know how to read this chart

@SpartanDonut The game submitted first got 6 votes, second one got 10, next got 13

MLM
So the first game submitted looks like it got 6or7 votes @SpartanDonut

3:36 PM
is it 7? something like that

I stand by my original statement

I don't know how to read this chart
oh wait
maybe I get it
the dot represents a game?
so game 2 and 3 were submitted very close together?

data looks pretty well random to me

MLM
3:38 PM
I see a downward trend. I'll try to actually plot one

I don't think you have enough data points to infer a downward trend

yeah, dots represent games, and the height of the dot represents it's final score

Yeah I'm dumb and don't read charts too good

well, I also made some sql like that last night

MLM
with trendline

3:42 PM
I think the trend proves the theory wrong, even if its a negative trend

@MLM need more data points really

doesn't really look significant given the amount of datapoints and shallow slope

Not enough data points to draw any real conclusions from

Well, can we overlay the past jams?

Again ignore... I was reading it wrong lol
again...
Time to write a user script that automatically blocks me from viewing charts

3:43 PM
hahah

MLM
Just to be clear, a negative trend proves that earlier games seem to get more votes. This is a general statement on how to read the graph(ignoring the data at hand and its flaws)

Not really

Proves is an awful strong word

you got "proves" and "seem" in the same sentence there :)
I really don't think 12 data points is enough to "prove" the hypothesis.
(I'll stop saying that now"

3:46 PM
If anything we have a theory that games that are submitted at the last minute probably weren't scoped properly and could have used more time to be better and as a result they received less votes due to their lower quality ;)

Can you run it for some of the other jams: spring, winter, fall 2013

I already got an idea for the jam, I hope I get words that are compatible :D

@Lasse lol
@Lasse Tell me what the idea is, and I can guarantee it, >.> j/k

lol

MLM
3:48 PM
Read the second part of my message. That statement was to try to help people reading the graph, not a conclusion. I have taken statistics and realize there is a lot more than just a line to prove it

@MLM Your message is even more confusing. Don't use the word "proves" incorrectly.

MLM
@JohnMcDonald I can, a dump from data.se would help

you mean, you're not using the data explorer?

MLM
@JohnMcDonald I didn't gather the data, it was shared with me in a spreadsheet and I just made a graph

Oh, well... let me make a query

3:50 PM
@MLM I just plotted 7 random numbers and added a trendline.

MLM
Nice :P

it "proves" that the numbers will keep rising

MLM
We agree, stop arguing. I was trying to give a statement on how to read the graph and that is why I qualified it with ignoring the current data and its flaws.
The statement would be true if there was perfect data and that was the point

Alright, just don't do it again :P
oh, So by-the-fucking-way Youtube supports 60fps VIDEOS NOW!
Are you as amazed as I am?!

Much better.

3:56 PM
Some SQL and graphs and stuff: Do earlier game submissions get more votes?

@AttackingHobo What a scrubby dub bad kid

lolwut

Fall 2013 jam:

@JohnMcDonald pretty cool

It looks like the Q value of the system is high and it's ringing into oscillation

3:58 PM
I hope that youtube supporting 60fps will make publishers care about 60fps more
