@1010011010 That seems to be a reasonable explanation :-)

6:38 AM
hello tex users
i have a small question
@Johannes_B: are you there?

@AbhimanyuArora Yes i am. Hi.

Thanks :-)
May I ask you to spare a few seconds to compile the tex file and see whether it is giving an error or not?
It is here
2
Q: how to modify the following table

Abhimanyu AroraIn the example below, you might see that I have a table: I would like to change/introduce and understand the following: How to change the column separator say to \Rightarrow. Normally one can do this by introducing @{$\Rightarrow$} when the columns are specified as {cc} etc. but in the "paragr...

Apparently I get an error whereas Bernard doesn't
So I think it would be better to seek a third-party opinion
The one in the answer

@A Which one exactely?
Ah
@AbhimanyuArora btw: First thing i notice: The tex is broken into parts.

Yes
even if the \providecommand... is included

@AbhimanyuArora btw: First thing i notice: The tex is broken into parts.

6:43 AM
still doesn't seem to compile (I have been trying since yesterday)
indeed
you mean before and after % \providecommand\given{} \DeclarePairedDelimiterXPP\EV1{E}(){}{ \renewcommand\given{\nonscript\,\delimsize\vert\nonscript\,} #1}
right?

@AbhimanyuArora Exactly, that should be fixed.

yes, i removed the % sign and included it in the tex with the other part, but no success

Let me have a look.

much appreciated, very kind

@AbhimanyuArora Was taking a moment, please check if the following works as expected:
\DeclarePairedDelimiterX{\EV}[1]{E(}{)}{\renewcommand\given{\nonscript\,\delims‌ize\vert\nonscript\,} #1}

7:03 AM
@Johannes_B: Many thanks. I 'm afraid it still gives and error (says undefined control sequence and points at flalign even though I have loaded amsmath)
so you mean i delete the \providecommand\given{}, right?

@AbhimanyuArora nono, itś right there
I just didn't copy it.

ok
nope, no success

@AbhimanyuArora I didn't get any errors concerning flalign

and in the command
\providecommand\given{}\DeclarePairedDelimiterX{\EV}[1]{E(}{)}{\renewcommand\given{\nonscript\,\delims‌ize\vert\nonscript\,} #1}
where are the new lines supposed to begin?
i guess that could be a source of errors

@AbhimanyuArora What do you mean by New Lines?

7:17 AM
@Johannes_B: Thanks very much. I mean the entire thing is not written in one single line as here screencast.com/t/p7MVS2NTr1x, right. We need to start certain portions in new lines if I understand correctly, no?

@AbhimanyuArora Doesn't matter at all.

I see. Then I am totally at a loss what is the source of the 60 errors (I just copy-pasted the tex...

Q: which one to use? LyX or LaTeX

IdonknowCurrently I am using LaTeX to typset all my math reports. Recently I found out that LyX also uses LaTeX, which can also generate pdf, accept commands from LaTeX, but is easier to use as it does not flood all the commands in one page. Question: What is the difference between LyX and LaTeX? Is th...

@JosephWright Isn't ^ ^ that opinion based? Especially since there are already 8 answers.

> What is the difference between LyX and LaTeX? Is there any difference between the pdf generated by LyX and LaTeX?
@Johannes_B Those parts have objective answers

@JosephWright Right, didn't read it carefully (or mere remembered).

7:30 AM
@Johannes_B On the other hand, the answers do seem to be more varied
@Johannes_B One for meta, I think

@JosephWright You are the mod ;-)

7:47 AM
@Johannes_B that's how it works on many sites, unfortunately, that mods set the rules. IMHO it's wrong. However, we might as a first thing protect the question to show that 'nuff was said, @Joseph ?

@tohecz Mods don't set the rules

@JosephWright some do :-/ I mean, not officially, but they use mod hammer where they shouldn't, pushing the rules where they want this way.

@JosephWright But mods have the last word ;-)

@tohecz No, this is quite clear: mods enforce the rules decided on by site members as a whole

@Johannes_B not necessarily. If the community decides in meta that something is the rule now, so it is, well, as long as we speak about on/off-topic discussions

7:50 AM
My point is that with a quest which might be viewed as opinion-based we really do need a meta discussion or at least some voting on the question to close it: not really one where it's clear-cut and the mod hammer is appropriate

@JosephWright I 111% agree

@JosephWright @tohecz I just skimmed the answers. Only @werners anwser takles the question. All others are opinions on the title, which is somehow misleading.

@Johannes_B yep :)

@Johannes_B I'd suggest making a comment on the question asking if it can be made less likely to attract opinion
@Johannes_B Agreed: Werner's answer seems to cover the objective part to me

8:00 AM
Well, the top-voted answer is only borderline opinion-based to me: it doesn't say which is better, it says: if you go for LyX, you need to know some LaTeX anyways. This seems to be pretty objective opinion, yet it provides good context to what LyX and LaTeX are about.
@Johannes_B nice :)

@tohecz As far as i know, Scott is a LyX developer.

@Johannes_B Yes, he is

8:26 AM
Good MAEN ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Good morning!

@egreg: Oh, hello!

@ChristianHupfer How's the weather in BW? Here it's awful.

@egreg it seems to be awful everywhere today :(
@Johannes_B @JosephWright Question made worse :P Now we can just go on and close it completely :D tex.stackexchange.com/posts/197765/revisions

8:43 AM
@tohecz That should not have happened.

@Johannes_B no :p

:-D

@egreg: Sorry, I was away for some minutes... 'awful' is relative ;-) It rains a lot, the clouds stick to the forest mountains... I like this view

@ChristianHupfer I don't. But you're a Black Forestrian, so probably that's the best weather you can expect. :P

@egreg: Well, depends on the mood. In winter, a lot of snow tops this view of course, and in spring the forests have a huge range of green colour tones, as well as the autumn... the summer is the worst of seasons, when it's hot here.
@egreg: I am one of the rare Germans that do not complain about rain -- we are a minority ;-) An endangered species...

8:57 AM
If i change to apptocmd in tex.stackexchange.com/a/197961/37907 i get:
! Missing control sequence inserted.
<inserted text>
                \inaccessible
l.15 \chapter
             {a numbered chapter}
Can anyone point me to the reason?

@Johannes_B: You can't use \apptocmd without hacks to a command with optional argument

@ChristianHupfer The xpatch thing we discussed a few days ago

@Johannes_B Are you trying \apptocmd{\chapter}? Bad idea.

@Johannes_B: Yes, and egreg stated, that it even xpatch stuff would not work for \chapter etc.

no, apptocmd{\@schapter}

9:01 AM
@Johannes_B there's \xappto isn't there?

@Johannes_B: Sometimes it's better to catch the commands instead of injecting some code ;-) The structuring commands belong to this group, in my point of view. I wished, every command would have a freely programmable starting and end hook ;-)
I am off for a while, working with my hands instead with my head :D

I am off too, need to eat something.

@Johannes_B I guess you can get the same error with \pretocmd; it just depends on what \botmark contains.

@egreg Thanks, i'll take a look.

@Johannes_B In any case, \pretocmd seems better

9:11 AM
@egreg I just added a warning to my answer. If nothing good comes out of it, i'll delete the faulty code.

@ChristianHupfer \@schapter has no optional argument; nor has \chapter. ;-)

On my way to SP and of course wearing my Palmeiras T-shirt. :)

@egreg: Ok, I never looked precisely into book.cls etc., \s@chapter... ok... but \chapter[Short]{Long} ... It's a wrapper somehow?

@ChristianHupfer \chapter has no argument; at the end it calls \secdef\@chapter\@schapter and \secdef takes care of looking for a *, calling \@chapter or \@schapter. In the former case it looks for [. But the \newcommand facility for defining a command with optional arguments is not used.

9:29 AM
@egreg: I take a look into book.cls, just to see how it works

I is hungry. :(

@PauloCereda Are you going to SP?

@egreg week's reputation order slowly stabilising with you rushing ahead ;-)

@HarishKumar I'm paying my Sunday tour, which cost me rep cap. ;-)

@PauloCereda: I am eating a German Brezel... Do you want some chunk of it?

9:35 AM
@ChristianHupfer Etymologically, Pretzel would be a better spelling.

@egreg I noticed. I am not comfortable if you are behind me though. ;-)

@HarishKumar Do you feel like being pushed on?

@egreg: Middle high German: brēzel ..., German Duden says Brezel too... ;-)

@egreg hehe! exactly. If you are ahead, I am glad to follow you :-)

@egreg: yep, a visit to the concrete jungle. :)
@Christian: gimme gimme gimme, whatever it is. :)

9:38 AM
@PauloCereda: I hope you are prepared if somebody attacks you with a banana or strawberries :D

@PauloCereda If it were “Asphalt Jungle” you could expect to meet a beautiful girl.

I just hope USP isn't blocked today. :)
@Christian: where do I find a 16ton. thingy? :)
@egreg: ooh so true. :)

@PauloCereda: Don't you have that in a carriage behind you, always on tour with you?
@PauloCereda: Here, a chunk of a Pretzel, to satify egreg's etymological objections ;-)

@Christian: o.O
Pretzelmeister. :)

@PauloCereda: My new name here:D The artist, now known als Pretzelmeister :D
\newcommand\chapter{\if@openright\cleardoublepage\else\clearpage\fi
\thispagestyle{plain}%
\global\@topnum\z@
\@afterindentfalse
\secdef\@chapter\@schapter}
@egreg: So LaTeX does defer the possible [ etc and expands \if@openright etc first?

9:55 AM
Second bus, yay!

10:50 AM
@egregBTW I have given up on installing auctex 11.87.7 as I could not get it on board. It wasn't picking up tex files. :-(
@PauloCereda You are travelling. How do you access internet?

11:08 AM
@ChristianHupfer not sure I understand the question, and I'm not egreg, but probably the answer is yes
@ChristianHupfer it doesn't really defer them (as in see them and save for later) it just doesn't see them, \chapter has no arguments so any occurrence of \chapter is replaced by the definition you show, any apparent arguments are in fact picked up by other macros.

@Harish: a smartphone with a mobile internet plan. :)

@PauloCereda oh money, I thought you were on a bus with wifi:-)

@DavidCarlisle: That does answer my question anyway. ;-)

@ChristianHupfer no point waiting for @egreg to answer anything;-)

@David: I wish. :) The route I take has no wi-fi powered buses. :(

11:17 AM
@DavidCarlisle: Correct! ;-) It was directed to him, since we talked about this topic two hours ago
@PauloCereda: Still travelling? Oh my...

11:36 AM
@Christian: Yep. :)

Q: Bibtex source in JabRef

user2536125I am using JabRef to manage my bibliography. I also edited it to have extra table entries in the such as SpecialRemarks . However, I don't want these to appear in my bibtex source. So, my bibtex source is as follows: @ARTICLE{XYZS2009, author = {X, Y and Z, S}, title = {köuhr wqeröih wefdäkl...

Huh?

@JosephWright That's not the actuality. It is de facto mod's ranch in many networks
Especially when there is no active community that is sizable enough and little participation on Meta.

@percusse Like I said, the rules seem clear enough, though you are right that interpreting them is tricky
Even with an active meta working out what is the 'community decision' is not easy
I'm sure you can think of examples for that :-)

@JosephWright Not really, I'm merely talking about the stuff in Arduino, Signal Processing etc.
What I had in Music.SE is flat out nonsense. I don't even bring that up anymore. That network is dead and will stay like that.
I don't know if there is any deadline for staying in meta but that would be my first candidate to reach that

@percusse I was thinking that simply 'most votes on meta' is not necessarily the best way to decide on how the mods should handle particular issues

@JosephWright That's perfectly clear. I don't imply that the job is easy. But power still corrupts.

12:15 PM
@percusse We are lucky that we have quite a clear scope and relatively few people who set out to cause 'mischief', but there are still tricky judgements for the mods

@JosephWright Especially given that this is a weird combo of voluntary/egocentric/social work, I can imagine you can get decision fatigue quite quickly.

@percusse I hope that Stefan, Martin and I do a reasonable job of using the mod powers when appropriate but not otherwise: it's important to get it right both ways
@percusse We are lucky that the number of decisions needed is low so most of the time anything 'awkward' can be discussed
Don't fancy being a mod on SO!

@JosephWright reasonable is an understatement :-)
@JosephWright Contrary to the current situation, SO needs more official experts. Most of the discussions go bitter/hostile in the absence of an authority. We cover that part pretty well so that things do conclude. Over there it's a neverending discussion.
I hope more people from mailing lists and comp.text.tex will join here

@percusse Lists have their place: they are good for discussions
@percusse I've no real idea what happens on SO other than that they have a monster number of flags (100s active at any one time)

@JosephWright Ah, true. I mean they also contribute here.
@JosephWright Arguing with an Engineer is a lot like wrestling in the mud with a pig: After a few hours, you realize the pig likes it.
That's I think what is happening there. Drama is the fuel of SO as far as I can see

12:42 PM
@percusse hey, that's not fair!

@tohecz I'm an engineer. So I can call myself a nigga :P

@percusse :)

I'm in a mudpool right now listening to another amazing chain of meeting arguments.

1:23 PM
@percusse btw, have you seen the discussion here?

Q: Using basic EQs to correct for uneven mike response

toheczI would like to know what are exact characteristics of the mixer's 3-zone EQs, namely of the one of Behringer Xenyx802. My problem is the following: I plan to get a microphone (Shure SM35), but its frequency response is not quite flat (see the dashed line below): The EQ offers -15dB on LOW (80...

1:37 PM
Good MAEN ;-)

Good A

3 hours later…
4:17 PM
@cfr Sometimes you really need to ease the pressure on users, (tex.stackexchange.com/questions/197266/…) we have adopted the everybody should be able to shoot their own feet, should they want to principle.
Otherwise, you are scaring them :P
@tohecz You can't get too flat freqresp. microphones unless you are ready to pay a lot of money.
So I don't know what you want to have but you need a pop filter for sure.
Spare the money on that too. It makes a lot of difference. Especially in the live situations
or do it your own
this looks better

4:42 PM
@percusse well, I can't really have a pop filter on a headset, can I?

@tohecz On a headset, you don't need to worry about bass boost. It will happen no matter what the package says. Keep it as far as you can at your chin level.

@percusse really?

@tohecz But everybody has it so it won't be awkward to people. Though the singer always feel weird about it.
You shouldn't listen to yourself. Ears are always forgiving if you hit the right notes.
The problem is that your headset is going through an amplification and due to the limited bandwidth of the headset they tend to emphasize the bass more than other bands.

@percusse so you say that I can go with a mid-priced headset microphone and just try to place it further away from the mouth?

Otherwise, the amp eats up the lows.
@tohecz They matter a lot of course but not as much as you think. Go to a store and try it out.
Bring your recorder with you and connect to it and record 10-15 seconds with varying words and notes
You'll pretty much get the idea

4:49 PM
@percusse the shitty thing is, you can't really get good ones here in shops, or you can (rarely), but they are like 30% more expensive than amazon.com import

@tohecz Test them real buy them online

@percusse well, I would love to, but as I say, it's rare that they have them in stock

@tohecz OK if it would help to convince you, find a typical speaker that you think you would use and look at its frequency response
You'll see that in a multiplicative fashion, your bass boost will be eaten out.
So it would level up
(Unless you crank up the amp to 11)

@percusse well, (1) I'll have a mixer with a (poor) 3EQ, and (2) I have a 100W speaker that I use at home, and there's something like 2x200 where I plan to perform
as well, I can simply get a 1- or 2-ch graphic EQs. I'm just not sure at what prices the quality starts to be bearable

@tohecz Poor in the sense that it's 3-channel or it doesn't function proplery?

4:53 PM
@percusse it's a 3ch (the basic stuff on small mixers)

@tohecz For voice it's more than enough. What are you planning ?
for each channel?

@percusse el. piano + voice, for the beginning
damn, does really "channel" mean two different things here?

@tohecz Is it a bass piece?
Are you a tenor ?

@percusse well, I sing mostly A3-E5, it's mostly a one-voice stuff

tenor it is then :)

4:55 PM
@percusse no, baritone I am

Your comfortable singing is 3? or 4?
Not your range

my true (comfortable) range is E3-D5, I can sing C3-F5 but only one time per evening :p

F5 ? Whoa... Respect

@percusse as I say, once per evening :)

@tohecz once in a life time and that's a maybe for me

4:56 PM
lol

@tohecz Anyway, then if you don't have too much bass piece going on, you can occupy the low end and let the piano fill in the high with your 3-way EQ

well, with some support from the piano I can sing F5 repeatedly, but one day I can, and another day I can't, depends on how good sleep I get etc

@tohecz I don't deal with rockstar problems
:P

@percusse not a rockstar, it's for the church
so you think that I shouldn't worry too much and get the middle-class headset microphone and a reasonable mixer and it'll be fine?

@tohecz If it is really middle-class and if it really reasonable, it will be just fine
Try it out if you can
And record from different places, if you can access the church ... hall?

5:00 PM
@percusse I can for sure, does it matter with such a cardoid microphone?

@tohecz So shut up and calculate. (often attributed to Feynman but some disagree)

@percusse now I lost you :p
brb 5min

@tohecz I mean go and record your stuff with mediocre mic but the same mixer, it will give you some confidence
@tohecz Then you can imagine how a middle-class would sound.
Experiment dammit! :P

@percusse confidence in my signing, or confidence in my gear?
well, I don't have the mixer nor the microphone. I have some "cheap" shure dynamic one at home

@tohecz Both.
I can smell some stage freight in your comments :)

5:05 PM
@percusse I do have confidence in my signing
@percusse well, I'm going to spend couple hundred euros for something I don't need, only I want, and that makes me nervous

@tohecz Ok, then take your bad mic to the church and see how much it covers. Maybe you don't even need one.

@percusse I can't sing with a stand microphone, it simply doesn't work

@tohecz You mean if it stays at one position
?
you need to move your head then, right?

@percusse this, and as well it occupies my view, I can't see the keyboard nor the sheets

@tohecz It goes under your eyes you know, in case you had it differently :P

5:09 PM
@percusse I need to view anything from straight in front of me down to like 45 degrees angle

Anyway, there are harnesses for bigger mics. Did you know them? Looks a bit awkward but it works while sitting I guess

@Paulo is here! Hi, I hope you feel better, bro!

@percusse well, it doesn't look really comfy for playing the piano. I can imagine a guitar played with this, but for guitar, you can use a stand usually :)

@tohecz Well I'm offering options.

5:16 PM
@percusse I know, and thanks for this :)

Some people can't keep their head at the mic. They tend to move a lot
That's why they put it in the headsets

@percusse yep, playing the piano, you have to move a lot, that's the difference
btw, it's funny, so far I discussed this with 3 people: one told me that hi-end mike will solve my issues
one told me that I'll have issues no matter what class I buy
and you basically tell me that it will be fine :)

Do what Axl does. You'll get company afterwards maybe whoknows
:P

@percusse Axl?

@tohecz Go home you are drunk.

5:23 PM
@percusse I really lost you

@tohecz It's a joke. The singer's name is Axl Rose. I can't believe that nobody knows Guns n' Roses anymore.
I'm getting old

@percusse we all are, but needed to say, I never fancied foreign music quite

@tohecz There is no such thing. Music is music

@percusse s/fancied/followed

@tohecz You are missing a lot.

5:27 PM
@percusse we all are

@tohecz I have the feeling that you would like Japanese folk music

@percusse maybe? I dunno

5:51 PM
@PauloCereda @cgnieder Are you following this Tory Grady guy? He started to dissect every possible shred you might have heard. Looks pretty decent production. Start from season 1. It is kinda dorky but hey :) youtube.com/user/troygrady

6:07 PM
@PauloCereda first test: SUCCESS :)
@percusse I've never heard of him before

@percusse: ooh I will take a look later on today. :)
@cgnieder: oh my! <3

Is this site related to compiler design or construction! Forgive me for my lack of knowledge OR boobiness! First time arrived here.

@shekharsuman boobiness always, compiler design never. It's about creating documents and typography

@shekhar: hello, this site covers TeX and friends (although I am into compiler construction). I think TCS might be a wiser choice.
@percusse: I see what you did therw. :)
I hat e tihs anddroi d keybaord

@PauloCereda Shame on you, a gentleman never stares.

6:13 PM
Sorry,but what is this TCS??? Also thanks for responding.

Turbo Compiling Speed

@percusse: oh no, I have been spotted! :)

Is Turbo Compiling Speed under a network of Stack Exchange?

On personal computers, the turbo button is a button which changes the effective speed of the system, making equipment run faster (or slower) in some way. The name is based on that of a forced induction air compressor which makes a car go faster (a turbocharger). == Effect == The turbo button usually accomplishes this by either adjusting the CPU clock speed directly, or by turning off the processor's cache, forcing it to rely on the significantly slower main memory for memory accesses. The button was generally present on older systems, and was designed to allow the user to play older games that...

Theoretical Computer Science. :)

6:14 PM

Theoretical Computer Science. :)
@percusse: well played, sir. :)

@PauloCereda Seemed legit until you blurped since it is your profession

LOL I am terrible at parties. :)

Thanks Alot @PauloCereda and @percusse...

@shekharsuman No problem. Make sure you create a nice question since they expect a lot of details.

6:17 PM
@shekhar: out of curiosity, what do want to do/achieve?

@PauloCereda- No,since months or longer, I was thinking to create an account on tex and Latex St. Exc. as I am having my Compiler Construction in this semester! So, today I came directly over here and asked you people this! Thanks really for the help provided.
@percusse-I'll take care of that! Thanks for your suggestion.

@shekhar: do your best at this course. Compiler construction is a fantastic subject and gives you a great practical background with formal languages.
I am writing a paper on this subject as we speak. :P

@PauloCereda You should implement a java compiler in TeX and use it to compile nightingale so you can run tex...

@David: sounds like a plan. :) I just need to finish reading the TeXbook. :)

6:58 PM

@PauloCereda Thanks for your advice. I'll try the same. BTW,any language suggestion for implementation in which special language---my language of choices are C(less) and Java(more). But,my area of specialisation is Operating System. Any suggestion/feedback for which language to choose for implementing compiler.I've already added relevant details. THANKS in advance.

7:09 PM
@percusse Thanks for resizing. I simply uploaded an image from my PC, which is far smaller than the size that came out in my post.

@PauloCereda skip to appendix D, all the good bits are there

Good MAEN ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Always amusing.

7:26 PM
@Johannes_B: Satire? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Nee
@ChristianHupfer Helping is just frustrating sometimes ...

@Johannes_B: Yes.... that's why I reduced my activities here on TeX.SX already

@ChristianHupfer Did you step forwards concerning book.cls?
@ChristianHupfer Oh :-(

@Johannes_B: What do yo mean with book.cls?

@ChristianHupfer The thing from about 11 a.m. and the optional argument.

7:30 PM
@Johannes_B... oh, I remember... well egreg and David explained it... but I have not looked again on that question

@ChristianHupfer Another beauty golatex.de/…
@ChristianHupfer I hadn't have time to take a closer look :-(

@Johannes_B: Honestly, forget that question, the user will not come back again, I fear ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I know :-D

@Johannes_B: Böser, böser Moderator, ganz böse :D

@ChristianHupfer Why?

7:33 PM
@Johannes_B: Zitat: Was ist denn an meinen Worten nicht zu verstehen?

Off for about twenty minutes

Very aggressive ;-)

@Johannes_B lol Ulrike must have had a good day! »Es liegt an einem Unterschied zwischen deinem und meinem Dokument.« :)

Phone, right back in a few minutes

@1010011010 I didn't understand why my computer was choking only on your question for a while :)

@percusse Y'all really have such bad computers? Come on! Mine never even flinched!!

@1010011010 I don't compute much anymore. My laptop decided to switch to art after intensive matlab abuse. So both of us are taking it easy.

@ChristianHupfer no stamina:-) I started answering tex questions on comp.text(.tex) sometime around 1988:-)

@percusse That's a standard I should live by as well.
How do you do it ?!?!?! :-D

@1010011010 One step at a time...

:-)

You don't renew your license. You quit academia. And start enjoying a normal life.
This stays on my desk most of the times at work. Just a reminder when I feel down
;-)

I've not quite hit the MatLab-level of computations yet, but I do use Mpfr in R... Protip: NEVER compute 1 million factorials unless you want to actually use your PC that day.

Factorials get boring pretty quickly after 10

@percusse You certainly don't renew your license for a car whose steering wheel is inverted and you have to remember 17 crazy function names just to make it move forward.

@tohecz When one of your favorite numerical analysts (and apparently @DavidCarlisle's term) writes this, there is an urge in that community to use that junk

Furthermore, MATLAB is a modern programming language and problem solving environment: it has sophisticated data structures, contains built-in editing and debugging tools, and supports object-oriented programming. These factors make MATLAB an excellent language for teaching and a powerful tool for research and practical problem solving.

@percusse well, money is
everything

and if you want to graduate, you gotta comply to nonsense up to an extent. I didn't so I had to renew my affiliation instead of Matlab license :)
