I wonder if a "Bible church" is synonymous to "Fundamentalist church".
I wonder if Fundamentalists perceive Lutherans, especially high-church Lutherans, as targets for conversion.
I don't know, but Lutherans do infant baptism, which may be rejected by strict Baptists or Fundamentalists.
On the other hand, both groups are Protestant.
Maybe it'd be safer to disguise oneself as Lutheran and visit a Fundamentalist church...
I think it pays to know a little bit about Lutheran theology.
Hmmm... I wonder if there are any Christians that specifically target other Christians for conversion.
Some American Evangelicals would disregard everyone but Evangelical Protestants as True Christians.
Jehovah's Witnesses would disregard everyone but themselves as True Christians.
Maybe Calvinists would only view Calvinists as being True Christians.
And Roman Catholics would only view Roman Catholics as being True Christians, and everybody outside the [Roman Catholic] Church does not have salvation.
I think that's normal. Everybody likes to think himself or herself as "special" or "better than the rest". It may be just human nature.
Otherwise, there would be no point of conversion in the first place. And people would just belong to whatever denomination their parents are in.

Q: And this question was closed because....?

bruised reedI don't understand how this question falls outside the scope of Christianity.SE: How do Jehovah Witnesses explain differences between NWT and Hebrew/Latin/Greek in Zechariah 12:10 and Acts 20:28? There were related questions on BH.SE here and here. A logical answer to the OP from my perspectiv...

@Anonymous Synonymous, no; but heavily overlapped.
@Anonymous No, by enlarge they don't think that (excepting some of the hyper-Calvinist enclaves).
@Anonymous Nope, that's not official Catholic doctrine either.

1:15 PM
@caleb, can you withdraw me from the election? Or do I need to just post that?

@Malachi No, I am not able to do that. You can only withdraw before the actual voting phase starts and you missed that. You should post an answer to the survey question stating your desire NOT to be elected and likewise say something to that effect in the election room.

Un fortunately I am still on tablet, would you mind making it easy on me and posting a link to the other chat?

1:42 PM
Thank you, and done

wow, yet another 'validiity of marriage' question!

2:14 PM
@Anonymous I think there is a verse (or a few verses) in the Bible that means not to attack or defame or rebuke other denominations that edify the Body of Christ. But I will have to find it.... later..

2:25 PM
@Zoe @Anonymous you may be thinking of Luke 9:49-50 - "49John answered and said, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us." 50But Jesus said to him, "Do not hinder him; for he who is not against you is for you.""

Zoe
@Anonymous 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 and Romans 12:4-21 specifically. In Rick Joyner's book, Epic Battles of the Last Days, he mentioned that all denominations that edify the Body of Christ are fighting the same war but just different battles
@Anonymous and each persons, whether in the same denomination or not, are all called to serve a different purpose as God wills.
@Anonymous A convert is someone who before, does not believe in Jehovah God and then, having been converted, proclaims the name of Christ and believes in the One True Living God.
Are you indirectly stating that the point of conversion is to convert someone to your religion and go to your church instead of just leading them to God and let God reveal Himself as He wills?
That is pretty selfish, don't you think? Besides, don't you know that YOU nor I are the ones who convert others, only the ones that God wills can come to know Him? Anyway, I do not know what denomination you speak for, for you to say things like "every denomination think they are...",
because that's not true unless it's in their doctrine or something, but it does go against the second commandment "Love your neighbours as yourself" and Biblical teachings such as being in agreement with your brethren etc...
For someone to believe in God and Jesus Christ does not necessary means he or she has to go to your church because the Bible does not teach any of that. But the Bible does teach about teamwork and cohesiveness and not letting the enemy accuse our brethren etc
You cannot take what the minority thinks and immediately ascribe it to that particular denomination without first checking their doctrine or the Bible because that is both unfair and unrighteous.
oops I meant to say "... that you nor I are NOT the ones who convert others"
but yeah
@bruisedreed That verse could work too. Many teachings in the Bible have verses all over the place to back them up :D

2:41 PM
@Zoe But Dan says that "all other Lutherans" regard the ELCA Lutherans to be "apostate". In that case, the meaning is that the ELCA Lutherans are not perceived to be serving God; therefore, does that mean the "other [American] Lutherans" make an attempt to convert the ELCA Lutherans to True Lutheranism?
Maybe Dan knows...

Zoe
@Anonymous Who is Dan and who are these all other Lutherans? Do they cite the ELCA Lutheran doctrine or something? So much personal opinions everywhere. Words like perception and regard really dont take much of a stand.

@Zoe This is Dan. He is raised in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (shortened to LCMS).
But after a series of memberships and affiliations to several churches, he decided to become Eastern Orthodox.
@Zoe In the sociology of religion, it does.

Zoe
@Anonymous There are members in a full gospel church that I go to who come from Catholicism as well

@Zoe Eastern Orthodox is not Catholic.
I mean, they are not Roman Catholic.

Zoe
@Anonymous I meant that it is not uncommon for people to switch denominations.

@brasshat - in regards to your answer here, there's a serious flaw in the logic... People do things they know are wrong all the time. When a person murders, steals, they know it's wrong. The PCUSA is essentially saying that the Biblical definition of marriage is wrong, while at the same time claiming to believe in Biblical Infallibility.
Something can't be wrong and infallible at the same time. Your flaw in reasoning ignores that fact that "I'm doing wrong but the Bible is right" is completely different than "The Bible is wrong and what I'm doing is right."

@DavidStratton Maybe it's a confusion of terminology.

Or even "The Bible is right and I acknowledge that what I'm doing is wrong"

Zoe
@DavidStratton I read that answer and one verse came into my mind, Matthew 6:30-34 because apparently, God knows what's up and what's more important.

3:32 PM
@Daи I have finished Marty's Lutheran Questions, Lutheran Answers, and taken a look at the "For Further Reading" section, which lists all books for further reading, and all of them are published by Augsburg Fortress and Fortress Press! Didn't you say that both are associated with the ELCA?
Yep, I did a quick search on Google, and indeed, they are really affiliated with the ELCA!
Well, at least it provides a quick primer on the ELCA branch of Lutheran theology.
I'm not sure if "most Lutherans" are amillennialists.

@DavidStratton I don't think he is pingable like that since he isn't in the room, but I can use a superping to get through. @brasshat see above ^^^

@Caleb What is a "superping"?

@Anonymous It's a mod-only tool to get through to people who aren't currently in chat.

@Caleb Maybe some people don't know there is a Chatroom function?

@Anonymous Or it's someone who hasn't been in chat for a while, and you want to summon them in for whatever reason.

Hello everybody
Is there a native speaker in this room? ;)

@A-friend I am a native speaker of English.
There are others here too.

4:23 PM
@A-friend I too am a native speaker of English.
I am not sure if @Caleb is one. He speaks Turkish, and says that most people in Turkey may have learned English in school but completely forgotten it. Caleb may be a rare case in that his written English is pretty fluent.

Q: did relic sellers have a specific name or term for their profession?

0xor1Was there a special name or term for people that sold fake relics to Christians on pilgrimage? Like selling swan feathers as angel feathers etc.

Can I consult with you about a pharmaceutical and commercial resume translation?
this is something like a company profile
Could you please help me with my translation?

@A-friend First, wrong chatroom. This chatroom is meant to discuss this site. Nothing to do with translation.
Room description:
> General discussion for Christianity.SE, pseudo-meta support, and help formulating questions.
Second, you didn't even tell us the languages in question.

Q: Should there be a "20th century Christianity" or "Modern Christianity" tag?

AndrewIt seems to me a 20th-century-Christianity tag or modern-Christianity tag would be useful to distinguish between questions like this one, which asks about the Jesus Movement and the Pentecostalism Movement, and questions about for example, Church councils, schisms, and the practices of churches t...
