2:00 PM
@Marco if you have any recommendations for that program/script, let me know. I do all my dev coding outside of the bzr... in github... in a private repo... :P

Morning @TheEvilPhoenix.

@JamesGifford mornin

@TheEvilPhoenix How're things?
Wait, don't answer that. just read back

:P
noticed the hyper rage mode level <crazynumber>? :P
its less right now, but its still hyper rage mode

I see.

2:06 PM
40 mins ago, by The Evil Phoenix
i'm amending it: [ <standard rage level due to how much is on schedule> * (50000000 * <number of projects with an unfeasible due date>) * <Hours to work with MSoft software> * (6*<number of systems running Windows XP>) ] ^ <number of servers being evil> == hyper rage mode, level 500000000000000000000000000
pretty much sums it up

is scared of the burniator

Maybe you shouldn't work with Windows machines then?
4

perhaps the State should stop working with Windows machines
its actually dependent on the number of servers at the server farm that are not working right
which is a big number
remove that, work with jsut this: [ <standard rage level due to how much is on schedule> * (50000000 * <number of projects with an unfeasible due date>) * <Hours to work with MSoft software> * (6*<number of systems running Windows XP>) ]
and it ends up being rage mode 6
which isnt bad at all
because i'm usually around rage-2
:P
anyways, @Marco did you test 2.0 of that script? the PPAs were updated last night with the pushed changes

Not yet
Writing long angry emails

heh
at whom and about what? :p

2:15 PM
I think I'm the subject of most of them. ;D

We established this awhile ago - I founded the Cult Of Jorge, and therefore the Cult Of Marco hates me. lol.

Jun 5 at 20:20, by James Gifford
@Rinzwind Is the founding member of the cult of Jorge ;)

still lol

2:19 PM
:)

@Takkat ping

darn i need more coffee COFFEE RUN!

I'm running through the steps at askubuntu.com/questions/16988/… and I'm stuck at the stage "Mount the USB drive to the installation environment". The USB disk is listed in the devices, but its menu item is disabled. Any help guys?

You need to enable virtual boxes access to the USB bus.
(How to do that, I don't know)

you need to manually define that
you need to know what the USB bus is on the host machine you've connected the device to
and specify that in the vbox config for that vm
but it sometimes fiails

2:26 PM
@Greg So yes, we know what we're doing, but we don't.

now...
if VBox actually wokred on this system
i'd start messing with it
but as it doesnt right now
meh

Likewise. I kinda bricked it with this thing called "Unity". (Made it slower than heck)

Oli
@Greg Quite simple - you need to add your user to a group (I forget it off the top of my head) to be allowed to hand off USB devices to vbox

@Oli ah makes sense... I'll Google

Oli
You want to add your user to the vboxusers group

2:28 PM
@JamesGifford HAH YOU NUKED YOUR SYSTEM WITH 11.04 FAILURE TO YOU!

hello chat!

@htorque go back to your nebula :P

@TheEvilPhoenix Uh-huh.

i'll give you a nebula
3

2:29 PM
@htorque i'm already in a nebula so :P

I love how the rest of us are too lazy to google it, and then @Oli does the hard work for us. :P

i don't think you got what kind of nebula i meant :P

@JamesGifford +1
@htorque i did. but i'm ignoring your intended statement :P

nobody can ignore that nebula :P

unless they dont exist in your space-time continuum :P

2:32 PM
you mean my space-i-got-no-time continuum
so, cya all :-)

now... i need someone to test this script on maverick... i tested on lucid and it works...
also tested on natty and it works...

@TheEvilPhoenix Give me an hour and I'll have my maverick VM booted.

Ah, just realised that when a group policy changes, the user has to log out then back in again to see the changes.

(give or take two hours)

@JamesGifford hehe OK

2:37 PM
In the meantime, send me a link to this script and tell me what it might (or might not) do!

pretty straightforward... streamlines manually grabbing a key from a keyserver and adding it to the apt keyring (so that PPAs, packages, etc. that are signed would work)
that's the PPA

So is there any particular way to test it?

code is located in the bzr for the project: launchpad.net/addgpg-apt/2.0.0
yeah actually
the issue was it wouldnt access the keyring

@Oli where abouts in the UK are you from?

it would EOF out
so using either of my launchpad keys, you can test it. because i made its packages with my launchpad keys xD
@JamesGifford i just need to see if the EOF bug in this was fixed:
[kahless]% addgpg-apt 5509C82E gpg: requesting key 5509C82E from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com gpg: key 5509C82E: "Thomas Ward (2nd Launchpad PGP Key) <email address hidden>" not changed gpg: Total number processed: 1 gpg: unchanged: 1 gpg: no writable keyring found: eof gpg: error reading `-': general error gpg: import from `-' failed: general error Above is error code. The error is triggered on a PGP key that is not utilized, but is a new key. Source of error: unknown.
addgpg-apt
Critical / Fix Released
@Marco was testing yesterday and confirmed the bug

2:41 PM
Ah. gotcha.

and late last night i finished fixing it
tested on lucid and natty

So I can use any PGP key?

but not maverick
yep
any PGP key

because my vm for it imploded
on any keyserver... use addgpg-apt --keyserver <server> <PGP key id>
yes, i coded in the --keyserver part

2:42 PM
Crap. my 10.10 ISO is corrupt. downloads another one

@TheEvilPhoenix Got a PGP key I can pull in?

Hey, it's not like they aren't there anymore!

by default it uses the ubuntu keyservers
@MarcoCeppi one sec

Actually I have one to test with

2:44 PM
:P
@MarcoCeppi 4E279753
yet another one of mine
or you could pull the example keys from my keyserver...
if you absolutely want to... :P
i just need to make sure it doesnt EOF

gpg: requesting key F909CE43 from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com
gpg: key F909CE43: public key "Marco Ceppi (Personal Marco Ceppi key) <marco.ceppi@seacrow.org>" imported
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg:               imported: 1  (RSA: 1)
worked

did it say OK at the end?

Does this mean I don't need to fire up my VM anymore? :'-(

yes
just forgot to type in my password. Shouldn't it instead just run in sudo?

ah good
then it works
yeah, the apt-key part needs sudo
although it can be run as sudo
@Marco i ran into issues with that, strangely enough
it was having an issue saving the key as sudo... since its two separate commands that are needed to run for getting the key ready to import
onen to download, one to export as ascii armored. then that ascii armored pipes into sudo apt-key add -

2:47 PM
Why not just have it fail out if $USER != 0 say "Need to run as sudo"

because it wasnt allowing the keys to be downloaded right when i tested
in the 1.0 series i ran into that
but i'm going to test later...
and fix that if possible
i try to avoid running my scripts as sudo :P
but i did ask how to find superuser or not before on stackoverflow for bash scripting

Oli
@Greg Born in Essex (but really, that's all), lived most of my life in Cambridgeshire, have been in Southampton for the past 3 years but am in the process of moving to Norfolk (I've made it as far as north-west-Suffolk so far, will make it all the way some time this month.

so maybe i'll incorporate that into the code...

@Oli I've stuck firmly in the Midlands all my life

@Marco given that my bandwidth is sort of limited here... i dont have access to my git repo nor do i have access to bzr to push test code
and i pushed README file updates from a different system yesterday so i need to update the local git stuff

2:52 PM
do you guys want to play with pythonfu.com?

whats pythonfu.com

well you need to find out :-D
88.130.94.244 ← pythonfu preview
I'm going to leave this running for some time, go nuts :-)

i do not trust IPs :P

OMG VIRUS

^ that
:P

2:54 PM
Nice @StefanoPalazzo

you can mess up the site if you want, try to break it :-)
and some feedback on the functionality and usability would be very much appreciated

@Stefano exec('rm -rf ./*') :P

@lazyPower thanks :-)

i actually did that...
in PHP
they said "Try and break my PHP install!"
so i broke their site :P
because they allowed exec() access

tut

2:57 PM
lol :)

but they asked me to so :P

by the way, I don't store any passwords like dropbox ;-) just hashes - sha1(sha512(password))

rainbow the hashtable!

When the site goes live, I will use something like 2^14 rounds of salted sha512, because I can

ask Chuck Norris to salt your sha512s, then if someone breaks them... etc.

2:59 PM
@StefanoPalazzo but what happens if the location the server is at gets bombarded by explosions? then you wont have anywhere to run the site :P

indeed :)

so at that point, you can't use 2^14 rounds of salted sha512
because there's no system to do it :p

@StefanoPalazzo Looks great

@StefanoPalazzo Your passwords are salted, right?

thanks!
@JamesGifford not at the moment, no

3:04 PM
@StefanoPalazzo OK. glad he used a old password

@JamesGifford take a look at the hash snippet, it's just copied from the code of the site

@StefanoPalazzo 404 on user pages.
@StefanoPalazzo OK.

but it's easy enough to implement, and I'll do it before the site goes live

@JamesGifford yep, much of the site just isn't implemented yet.

3:07 PM
@MarcoCeppi I originally had code for that... its amazing i forgot about it... and the question regarding it was my second asked question here:
23
Q: How can I determine whether a shellscript runs as root or not?

The Evil PhoenixThis is something I've been curious about. I make a lot of small bash scripts (.sh files) to do tasks that I routinely do. Some of those tasks require everything to be ran as superuser. I've been curious: Is it possible to, within the BASH script prior to everything being run, check if the sc...

that's where i got a majority of my rep :P

@StefanoPalazzo I think your snippet urls are too long. Maybe use a tiny URL engine to compute a smaller hash?

OOOHHHH.... Gravatar. nice.

@MarcoCeppi I was thinking I should give them sequential ids instead, like I do for users
couchdb doesn't have an "autoincrement" thing built in, so it's at the bottom of the todo-list ;-)
but tinyurls would be cool too, like s.pythonfu.com/32fa or something

yeah

Kim
3:19 PM
hello

Hello @Kim

Kim
@Macro: you write the feature for indicator applet?
In the new version, it seems i cannot reverse the color of the screen.

@Kim Are you talking about this?
55
Q: StackApplet - Bringing Stack Exchange Notifications to Your Desktop [1.5 beta 2 Released!]

George Edison 1.5 beta 2 is now out! The second beta in the 1.5 series is now available for download! The changes are quite significant and you can read more about it here. Feedback is very important, so please head on over to the download page and grab a copy for your platform. Screenshot A...

Kim
@MacroCeppi no

What are you referring to then?

Kim
3:23 PM
indicator applet in ubuntu 11.04

I didn't write it.
@StefanoPalazzo For some reason the site thinks I'm logged in as @JamesGifford

oh, that's not good

Kim
So, this group is for software engineer who write code for ubuntu?

@Kim No, this is just a chat room for anyone/everyone that uses Ubuntu or Ask Ubuntu
Though we do have some people in here who write code.

@MarcoCeppi yikes! how embarrassing. I'll re-write the session code this evening :-(
I bet I forgot to copy a dictionary somewhere

3:27 PM
Runs amock as James

Kim
@MarcoCeppi That means some of you work in the same company here?

@Kim No, most of us have never met in real life.

following this tutorial askubuntu.com/questions/16988/… on installing ubuntu to a usb hdd, it almost completed, then complained that an error occurred when trying to install the boot loader, and I had to then choose dev/sda dev/sda1 dev/sda2 or dev/sda3, or skip installing a boot loader.
I skipped loading the boot loader, then the installer crashed
:\

Kim
@MacroCeppi How to get the authority to commit code to the ubuntu code base?

@Kim Well. First you need to join launchpad then you need to sign the CoC, then you need to find a project, find a bug/feature request, write code, submit the patch to the team, they'll review and reject/approve it.
Then your code is in the project. If you want direct commit access to certain projects you'll need to apply at each individual project. Typically they only accept people who have been actively fixing bugs/building features
There is no "one Ubuntu code base" it's comprised of a large number of smaller projects.
The majority of those projects are hosted on LaunchPad

Kim
3:35 PM
@MacroCeppi what is CoC ?

Hello all
@MarcoCeppi Im officially part of the arduino world :D

Kim
@MacroCeppi cool.

It's pretty easy to get started. If you have no idea where to start this wiki page offers vast options

Kim
@MacroCeppi are all the projects on lunchpad open to any people to submit patches?
@MarcoCeppi Does kernel project open to people either?

3:40 PM
@Kim Yes! Open Source projects thrive on people sending in patches. LaunchPad makes it easy for you to submit a patch to most bug reports
@Kim The Ubuntu Kernel is open source as well. I'm not sure how they do their patching since they use Git and not Bazaar for source control.

Kim
@MarcoCeppi like patches to customize linux kernel?
@MarcoCeppi Thanks really
@MacroCeppi very helpful

@Kim Well, is currently patching the Ubuntu Linux kernel for customization, they typically won't incorporate customization that don't provide a benefit to the larger community. However, you're free to patch the kernel and compile it as much as you want.
The best way to get involved with Kernel hacking is to view the bug and security issues for the kernel and to join the Ubuntu-Kernel IRC room on freenode.net

Crap @MarcoCeppi. :P
You're me! Or maybe I'm you!

@lazyPower FYI, you asked for this awhile ago: A one-note clone.

3:52 PM
How do I check System Specifications ? http://bit.ly/qUo6Qm #softwarerecommendation

I'm about ready to start.

1 hour later…
5:01 PM
How can i close a screen command
@GeorgeEdison I haz arduino

5:12 PM
GTS
BBT

with exit if you are inside screen or just delete the corresponding screen name in /var/run/screen ;)
@Amithkk !

Kim
hihi

i despise the internet today
ANYWAYS
lets see if i cant update my code...
@MarcoCeppi got a github account? I'd like to temporarily include you in the dev repo for that script

Kim
I have signed the CoC on launchpad, how can i submit code to the team of a project
and get my code reviewed by the team?
@MacroCeppi I have signed the CoC on launchpad, how can i submit code to the team of a project and get my code reviewed by the team?

@KIm what are ya trying to do
get code reviewed by a team?

Kim
5:26 PM
I'm trying to join a team

i'd start by creating your own lp branch: lp:~lpusername/projectname/branch
then point them to the code in that branch
that way its not in the project's branch, but they can review the code if they wish to import it
subsequently, contact the team's leader/driver
so they can review the code
because they'd be controlling acceptance
i've done this for teams i manage, so... :P

Kim
if accepted, they will let me join in the team?

or
@Kim up to the team leader

Kim
ok

as i said
talk to the team leader... they could take your code and use it, but not give you team membership.
granted they'd attribute that code modification to you in some form
but they are in no way obligated to give you access to their team
for instance
if @Marco wanted to be a member of the addgpg-apt developers team
i'd let them join
because @Marco helped confirm a bug, test the fix, and has recommended code changes.
but that's my team. LP policy states that i am not obligated to have anyone join my team
for any reason

Kim
5:30 PM
ok , thank you for your suggestion anyway.

its a strong suggestion. because only the team leader/manager knows the obligations needed to join a team
and out of my curiosity... what team are ya trying to join?

Kim
BHC

has no clue what BHC stands for

Kim
actually, I want to join a small team.

yeah you'd have to talk to the team leader: Rudy
well... i'm not looking for team members
but i'm going to add marco-ceppi anyways

Kim
5:33 PM
:)

@Marco FYI, you're being added to the dev team for addgpg-apt for recognition of your assistance
:P

@TheEvilPhoenix yeah, it's marcoceppi - ever since I made my own private git repo I rarely use the hub

:P
@Marco want to know what i found with trying to use sudo to run it?
addgpg-apt --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 4E279753
You must be root to do this.
teward@kahless:~/addgpg-apt_dev_stuff/git/addgpg-apt-development-code$ sudo ./addgpg-apt --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 4E279753
gpg: WARNING: unsafe ownership on configuration file `/home/teward/.gnupg/gpg.conf'
gpg: external program calls are disabled due to unsafe options file permissions
gpg: keyserver communications error: general error
gpg: keyserver receive failed: general error
gpg: WARNING: unsafe ownership on configuration file `/home/teward/.gnupg/gpg.conf'

Yeah, what happens?

5:45 PM
interesting.

it wont run because its trying to pull from the executing user's gpg stuff
hence why apt-key should be run as sudo
and that's all
i ran into that in 1.0.3
which i never uploaded to lp

I wonder if you could have it wrapped in sudo, but then drop to a user shell from inside of the script

not sure. that's a bash question :P
for now, 2.0 works and requires sudo for adding the apt-key

sure, so it just prompts for the user password
easy enough

i might have it download the key...
but add in an echo before the apt-key stuff
saying "This script requires sudo privileges in order to add the key to the APT keyring. If you do not have sudo access, please press Ctrl + C now."
then they know why they see the sudo passcode

5:48 PM
yeah, that would be best for the time being

i'll release that as 2.0.1

hi all :P
@TheEvilPhoenix the codes in here will they be use in your script/program?

Kim
Is this enough to use bazzar ? "sudo apt-get install bzr"

no one should work with windows machines!
@Kim why not sudo apt-get install bazzar?

@Alvar my script can get the keys for you, yes. use addgpg-apt <key> for the launchpad.net ppa ones
same for the ubuntu.com ones
for the playonlinux ones...
you'll need to know where they put their keys
it might not be a standard keyserver

Kim
5:51 PM
I work with windows at work

@Alvar in which case you'd have to specify that keyserver: addgpg-apt --keyserver <keyserver> <key>

Kim
and telnet to a unix server

@Kim then I feel for you...
@TheEvilPhoenix too much work...
I rather just reinstall linux, it's easier :P
Or I just w8 for 11.10! :P

@Alvar Install @TheEvilPhoenix script and use this:

@MarcoCeppi use what? :)

5:53 PM
sudo apt-get update | grep "NO_PUBKEY" | awk '{ system("addgpg-apt "$21) }'
That will fix most of those errors

@Marco FYI the script isnt made to run on every key
it'd have to go sequentially
it doesnt yet handle more than one key

That's what my one liner does :)

:P
nice.

Could use xargs but since we're already using awk - might as well just envoke it from system

alvar@alvar:~$ sudo apt-get update | grep "NO_PUBKEY" | awk '{ system("addgpg-apt "$21) }
>
>

5:55 PM
That might not work because of the sudo thing, but if it doesn't then I have an alternative
You missed a '

at the end?

Yes
1 min ago, by Marco Ceppi
sudo apt-get update | grep "NO_PUBKEY" | awk '{ system("addgpg-apt "$21) }'

thanks :/

ouch

lots of sigs :P

Try this instead:

5:56 PM
but make a note that the script wont check which keyservers to use
the keys must b e on the ubuntu.com keyservers
in order for addgpg-apt to get them without specifying keyservers

sudo apt-get update | grep "NO_PUBKEY" | awk '{print $21 }' | xargs addgpg-apt
Right, extra.ubuntu.com and ppa.lp should be in the system, right?

those should be in the ubuntu keyservers by default
the ubuntu.com one and any LP ones

the laptop is jsut * working *

as for playonlinux
nfc

Well POL should be in the Ubuntu keyring - I can't see why they wouldn't
Google might not

5:58 PM
playonlinux said it couldn't find the maverick codes, but I have natty LOL

That means you have a bad entry in your apt sources.d

@MarcoCeppi didn't wokr :(
xargs: addgpg-apt: No such file or directory

Kim
@Alvar I worked with ubuntu half a year ago, i miss ubuntu.

Did you install addgpg-apt ?

@MarcoCeppi doh

5:59 PM
<33
@Alvar @TheEvilPhoenix has a PPA for it

I jsut downlaoded the source xD

:P
the PPA exists

<333

but i'm going to be updating it shortly
so...
