Q: Time too quick in debian, 72 minutes pass in system date in one real world second

Having trouble with system date/time in GNU/Linux/Debian: Time goes too fast for date, time, cron. The sleep command works fine, file modification times are correct. The issue explained via commands: $ date Mon Sep 12 05:27:46 CEST 2011 $ time sleep 1 real 71m13.403s user 0m0.008s sys ...

That's a strange one...

I have just been informed that it's WiFi day (8.02.11).

What, exactly, do you do to celebrate WiFi day?
Does it involve unencrypted home AP's?

@coredump I knew you were one kinky beast, but seriously? RIM U HOSTING? -.-

I am all about the rim stuff

Do tell

It it wrong to flag this answer and say that it should be a comment? :serverfault.com/questions/296753/…

Hard to tell

@MarkM I already did for that one. You can too if you think so.

Shoot, the Black Hat conf is in Vegas right now and I'm not. =(

5:28 PM
@Iain Not advertising anything... I think he's just a luser who thinks this is a forum.

pehrs answer could easily be made into statements rather than questions and thus seem more acceptable. I do that all the time. For example, his first sentence "Virtual machine? Is time sync set up against the host? Is your kernel expecting ticks in a different rate from what the host sends?" could be rewritten as "If it's a VM, make sure that time sync is set to look at the host."

@MarkM I don't know but I added a comment now. Your fault for pointing it out.

Hey everyone. Does a question such as this belong on this website or no?

Q: Why aren't features like gzip enabled by default on many webservers?

IncognitoHaving played with several web servers online, I've seen things such as goDaddy not enabling gzip by default. Same with a few IIS drops, default installs of apache, and so forth. I keep running across servers that don't have basic things that improve your website speed turned on by default. Thi...

@WesleyDavid Too much work considering a 5k user should know better than to post that crap.

@Incognito I would vote in the affirmative.

5:31 PM
@ChrisS name port-tester, website porttest.blogspot... I think someone similar was spamming last week

@ChrisS Oh definitely. I wasn't suggesting an edit, I was just saying that he had valid ideas but should post them as declarative sentences, and not inquisitive.

@Incognito Yep

@Incognito could probably go to webmasters too

Thanks everyone.

@BartSilverstrim nice avatar

5:35 PM
:-) @Chopper3 said he was feeling burned out, and after Evan Anderson's avatar change I thought I'd try to cheer him up with a spread of the avatar-meme.

Wow that question has a whole lot of baseless opinions... Note to self: stay away from that clueless crowd.

I'm auditioning to become his lieutenant minion...
At least he hasn't threatened to kill me yet. That's a good sign.

@BartSilverstrim Chopper never threatens to kill anyone. He just does.
@ChrisS Oh Programmers. They so crazy.
I WILL NOT BE KILLED BY AN ENGLISH VMWARE WIZARD!!
5

@WesleyDavid ... damn... that's true.

5:39 PM
What do you mean so crazy? Just because I stay up late at night and write endless combinations of letters and brackets and drink coffee and scream at my keyboard and pound it to dust as I invoke the names of the elder-gods because I missed a semi-colon somewhere doesn't make me crazy... does it?

SUNOVAMOTHER -- what asshat starred that comment? Now Chopper's going to kill me too! =[

@Incognito Yes; actually I think that's the definition.

@Incognito It's not those things that make programmers crazy. It's that so many of you think server administration involves magyck, defragging hard drives and buying XP Professional instead of XP Home. =P

I'm gonna be honest @Wesley, I don't know what version of XP I run, how many GB of ram or HD I have, what speed the processor is, or what's running on it.

@BartSilverstrim Oh I missed your icon, sorry, thanks for that

5:43 PM
@Incognito That's okay - just make sure your code runs in userland and we'll all be one big happy family. =)

I switched to ubuntu desktop because upgrade reminders were becoming a nuisance, even after uninstalling the JVM and adobe.

@Chopper3: If you're unhappy with it it was someone else's idea. :-)

My code runs in cloud land, less issues that way.

no, it's great

I had to star that just to annoy @voretaq7 =P

5:44 PM
We don't have any Paddington Bear rides around here that I know of. Had to improvise.

@WesleyDavid What should a programmer know about? In terms of things we talk about on SF that is.

StackOverflow is invading ServerFault? Who left the door open?

@Incognito Ohhh, having a test environment and not deploying straight to production would be a good start.

Yes, yes of course it makes sense to delivery your software install as a 14K MSI and two 12,000K Transform files, one for each architecture. Yes, you've made my life simpler. Thanks
2

@BartSilverstrim Even worse, it's the programmers SE that's invading! =)

5:46 PM
Is there any chance you can pin a few binaries outside the cab in the Transform? I'd like to have to sort out which way those end up in the correct directories too... Oh? You did already? Thanks again.

I love finding programs that use Win98-era installers and design when I'm directed to install stuff on Win7. Works great.

@Incognito probably best to leave Pandora's box shut... System Administrators have to deal with every architectural defect programmers have made, usually for 5 to 10 years after.

Q: What sysadmin things should every programmer know?

Nathan DeWittAs a programmer, we tend to take sysadmins for granted. The few times I've been without a good sysadmin have really made me appreciate what you guys do. When we're venturing into an environment without a sysadmin, what words of wisdom can you offer us?

2
Not vouching for the quality of the question.... Just knew it had been raised on SF before.

@ChrisS It's funny because that's almost how I describe people who use software. Users don't have a clue how computers work and assume it's all magic, and if they open the thing up all the magic escapes.

@incognito: Do you have a screwdriver with you?

5:49 PM
@Incognito We dislike users too... that's a universal constant of being not a user.
6

I just found the coolest tie clip ever but I can't figure out if it's real or fake

@ChrisS This is a good question, what do sysadmins see as vital to quality software for their use?

And there's only one, so one of you nerds will buy it if i post the link

@ChrisS is making sure he doesn't get a statement that can haunt him from da' Googles!

@BartSilverstrim Shush! I was hoping nobody would notice.

5:51 PM
@Incognito if you saw some of the questions we get migrated from SO that should be killed at source you'd wonder if some coders really know how to use a computer

If your answer to a question about how to do something with your software is, "You might have to code it yourself," you deserve a knuckle in the nose.
Hee...the starred comments makes it look like Harry Potter is out to kill @WesleyDavid.

It's official, IE Users have lower IQs: sitepoint.com/ie-users-low-iq

@Iain Oh trust me, we don't. I've programmed x86 assembly and I don't know how to plug in my hard drive without realizing I've disabled my CD-Rom when I boot back up (true story). Nor does it bother me enough to fix it, I'd rather virtually mount an ISO than plug the drive back in.

@WesleyDavid I'm not annoyed. I just don't trust any infrastructure I can't reach out and smack :)

@Incognito I can't remember the last time I used a real cd/dvd to read/install anything

5:56 PM
@voretaq7 The hate is swelling in you now. Take your Jedi weapon. Use it. @Incognito is unarmed. Strike him down with it. Give in to your anger. With each passing moment you make yourself more the cloud's servant!

ServerFault is selling the wrong stuff in their store. They need a branded series of LARTs.

@WesleyDavid Can't I just make him answer the tech support line for a few days? Isn't that basically 20,000 years in hell, just distilled and concentrated?

@BartSilverstrim Store?

@BartSilverstrim Never underestimate the corrective capabilities of a large ceramic mug to the head.

5:58 PM
@voretaq7Only if it's a school's help desk. Preferrably a Jr High - in a town of between 5 and 10 thousand people - with accents that belong on Hee Haw.

I was looking at my SF t-shirt and stickers just the other day

@ChrisS: What @Iain said.

@WesleyDavid My boss just recommended that we check twitter for possible updates about ISP outages. It's like he just gave me the crack pipe and said "It's a magic crack pipe that doesn't run out." You've ruined me, sir.

We need a SF stripper-pole

I think I'll order a black T-Shirt - they appear much nicer than the white one I have

6:00 PM
@Chopper3: Weren't you suggesting before that hookers be used as temp tech help?

just get a question on the J&J podcast - you get one for free - oh hang about...

@Chopper3 After 15 seconds' worth of considering just who would be using that pole, I think you would reconsider that desire.

yes

@Iain The T-shirts are really thick and quality. I like 'em.

I have a white one but I think the black ones look better

6:03 PM
They need to advertise the Nalgene bottle in sizes we're familiar with; nobody understands what 750ml is... But we're all familiar with a Fifth. shop.stackexchange.com/products/stack-exchange-nalgene-bottle

@BartSilverstrim We are all prostitutes: We exchange (technical) services for money.

DAMN DAMN DAMN. Just spilled water on my keyboard. Sun one - USB. Ctrl key in the right place. You know how it is.
Anyways, <3 the black one too.

@MikeyB big friendly HELP button? :)

@BartSilverstrim is that a SF hoodie you've got on your G+ profile photo ?

@voretaq7 Big friendly help button. An 'Any Key'. Yeah… all that.

6:04 PM
@Iain: SF shirt.

@Incognito for money :)

Q: Can Exchange Tasks be Automated via PowerShell?

Myrddin EmrysI can't seem to find a way to run the various Exchange tasks (Establish E-mail Address, Remove Exchange Attributes, Create Mailbox, etc) from Powershell. It seems unlikely to me that Exchange tasks are not possible to automate; does someone have a starting point for me to automate repetetive Exch...

There's this thing called a search engine. You may want to try it.
"I can't seem to find a way to run the various Exchange tasks... I've asked everyone within earshot!"

Wooow. I'm usually pretty lenient with newbie questions, but that's just messed up.

The OP is getting hammered.

6:36 PM
The funny thing is that if he worded the question differently (i.e. other than "derp derp derp") it'd be a good question.

6:51 PM
WTF?

@Iain So, here's a question. How does that user have 3 rep?

someone downvoted when he had 1 rep and then cancelled it
that "gives back" the 2 rep that the downvote took away even though it never really subtracted anything with the downvote
it's been around since the very beginning

wonky

ServerFault isn't loading for me

Oh, that's because you're a douche.

7:02 PM
etsy isnt loading for me

Just cuz I pop mah collar like a boss doesn't mean I'm a... wait... yes it does.

Exactly how many popped collars are you sporting?

@ScottPack shows as 1 to me

@Iain Now it does, true. At the time said user had one question, 3 downvotes, and 3 rep.

7:05 PM
I didn't notice to be honest

@Iain That's because you're not a douche.

Is being a douche better or worse than being a douchecanoe? And where does that rank in terms of being a doucherocket?

And what about the douchenozzle?

I use douchenozzle as a catch-all.

I'd walked by here a number of times but hadn't been far enough away to notice that big sign up there. That's the Blackboard HQ right there across the street from the NPR building. I knew it was around here somewhere, I just hadn't found it yet....

7:20 PM
Blackboard can die in a fire, screaming.

lol@Bb
Their product is absolute trash
Every release of 9 that they've put out has broken course copy, this includes the latest Service Pack

From my experience all Education software is shite. The developers are dinosaurs who never left the early 90s in terms of UI dev and install and management. cough Scholastic cough
cough Pearson cough
cough Scantron cough

Our state software has the same issues...
Software is an afterthought for ed and state ed departments, it seems.
I think they hire interns and refuse to update their dev environments past VB6.

@BartSilverstrim Don't even get me started on state mandated report submittals. Freaking csv files in fixed width, blah blah blah

You must have met our state IT group then.
@$#% VB front end to an Access DB, if you're lucky...I think a couple times it was an Excel sheet with macros.

State of MD, not PA. But they all inbreed, as far as I'm concerned

@Holocryptic I am not saying you're wrong.

hehe
@sysadmin1138 how's things?

@ScottPack So is Fedora's habit of setting the default umask to no more than 666 a security thing? So that nothing is ever executable by default?

@Holocryptic Busy. Helping build Product Next and have a major data-center reorganization in mid August.

Sam
evening all

7:46 PM
Howdy.

@sysadmin1138 Ooo, sounds fun

@Holocryptic Yeah. The hard part was convincing a certain internal group that the date has to be firm, no slipping the schedule to accommodate some client's urgent project.

@sysadmin1138 I bet that was hard, what with revenue being tied to said urgent client

@Holocryptic We like being accommodating to our users, it is one of the things that distinguishes us from the rest. That said, I'm going to have to implement a formalized major-change window schedule. Once a quarter, the option of a major 48-hour downtime.
This is the product that is impacted ---> kcura.com/relativity
To the best of my knowledge, it doesn't like rolling upgrades so whenever we do a big one we have to bring the whole infrastructure down for a whacking huge amount of time.

Typo, @sysadmin1138?
Relativity Analytics allows you to speed up review and identify critical documents in a case by searching and organizing document sets. Search results depend on how and where similar ideas and concepts in a document collection intersect. You can leverage Relativity Analytics throughout the review workflow to go faster and work smarter.
shouldn't it have a comma after "speed up?"

7:57 PM
We buy that product, that site ain't mine.

@sysadmin1138 Interesting. So it's a data mining tool?

@Holocryptic Specalized for the eDiscovery field as I understand it.

Ah, sorry @sysadmin1138. Thought you were behind it somehow :-)
...still think it's a typo...

@BartSilverstrim Also, there is some industry jargon in that text. There is an invisible "document-" before the "review".

Oy

8:00 PM
I was peripherally involved with e-discovery at my old old job
I found it to be kind of interesting

spent the entire day pulling teeth from our database for business stupidity projects
I need like a month to devote to that shit so I can automate everything they'll ever ask for and never have to bother me again.

@voretaq7 I hate it when they pass me the tooth-extraction pliers. It just means I'll spend the day covered in spit.

business intelligence works BLOWS when you have to do it manually :-/

Time for me to pack up and head home. Later everyone.

@WesleyDavid Probably, it certainly makes some sense. I've never actually looked for any justification to see if that's what they intended.

As a moderator on ServerFault I run into a lot of the iffy questions. Our users flag them for moderator attention and we deal with them. Some are obviously wrong enough to get dealt with through the normal close-voting process without the mod-hammer being involved. Along the way, we mods do run into some differing opinions on certain nuances of the FAQ. I'll be covering some of the more frequen

@voretaq7 There's intelligence in business?

@WesleyDavid The same kind you find in the military as it happens.

@sysadmin1138 precisely.

I giggled at Jesper's comment - specifically the phrase "the false myth of server resources." So wait... is a false myth a truth?

interesting, this was closed so he came back with this

What's the problem with it? I see the problem with the first incarnation of his question, but don't know why the second edit was closed.
Good question. I'd like to know the answer myself.
Fits the FAQ criterion as far as I can tell.

People seem to think that knowing the answer precludes you from asking the question
If he [posted the question and his own solution that would I think be OK
as that adds to the body of information.

Yeah, It's not a discussion question nor a subjective one. It's a legit Q that's good Google fodder.

9:37 PM
I read somewhere (and can't find it now) Jeff saying that posting your own questions and answers was a good thing as it captures the information

Ah yes, he does do that too
So are you going to follow me, or is this going to be a one way relationship? I thought you loved me!
muahahahahaha!!!!!
You created a monster, and only have yourself to blame @WesleyDavid

I thought I followed you...

Did you?

Nope, I guess I forgot in all the excitement.
I got over Twitter relatively quickly. I use it as a tool now. It's serverfault that's a hard one to stop.

There we go

But in reality...
I CAN QUIT ANYTIME I WANT!!

hahahaa
It's all the same
I figure it will be good to capture updates about products and net services and the like
But it's all new and shiny to me right now
I'll probably get over it in about a week or so
Ugh. So tired. I'm ready to go home

I should really turn the computer off. Almost every comment I have left this evening is flaming people for being dipshits :/

Equally, I have cast 10 votes today - I think maybe 2 or 3 were upvotes :/
Yeah, I should really give it a rest today!

I want to kill myself. I've just seen this posted in an answer just now :'(
"1) What role is the server in question fulfilling (PDC, BDC, Member Server etc)"
PDC, BDC.... seriously?!!!!! Dude, welcome to 2011 where those things died out while I was in school.

I still hear people use ADS. Took me a long time to figure out what he meant.

@ScottPack Active Directory Service?
@BenPilbrow People still teach that unfortunately

@Holocryptic I know. If I see it, I usually edit it out of posts - like I just did.
Sad really :(

It usually is.
