A: Offer an XMPP method for chat

The Unhandled ExceptionUPDATE 2010-11-14: My XMPP Bridge now has write support, albeit very crudely built. In addition, I just got the user list partially working, rich text messages now work almost flawlessly and the code is fairly stable. It was running for almosta whole week, 24 hours a day last week. (I forgot what...

I am starting an XMPP bridge for the chat.stackexchange.com domain now. I am creating the following rooms: sandbox, the-se-tavern, the-frying-pan, minecraft-talk, bridge, and apple-chat
If anyone wants more, @Josh me in this room.

 XMPP

For discussion about XMPP integration
@rchern See above. Any other rooms you want?
Oh, I'll add unix-and-linux
Last call for more rooms for the initial run!!!
Ok. And awwwway we go!
The bridge is now up an running. To join this room, join the XMPP/Jabber MUC: the-se-tavern@sechat.smart-safe-secure.com

Wait, math.se is a hotbed of unrest... what?
of all the sites I could see exploding in drama, I did not think it would be Math.
What exactly is the story there?

7:56 AM
I don't have all the details
All I know is a vocal minority formed that attacked moderators on a regular basis
A moderator called it quits, the suspension button was used and Jeff had to step in.

Q: I quit. Here's why.

IsaacI have offered my resignation as a moderator to the SE team and I think it's important that I provide some explanation here. Principally, I decided over the past weekend to pull the advertising for math.SE from a local professional newsletter because I was no longer comfortable recommending the ...

Q: An open letter to Jeff Atwood

Akhil MathewDear Mr. Atwood, I have been an active user on Math.SE for several months now. I have enjoyed participation in the website together with the interaction with other mathematicians that it has brought me. I have learned much from the answers provided me by experts, and I am glad to have contribute...

That said -- maths uses chat very little.
I wonder if it's related :)

@Josh did it crash? :P

@badp Yes, it did! Was that you? :-)
It's back now
@CRoss Do you mean, if you use XMPP?

@badp Wow, makes me feel better at least
@Josh Indeed
Do I have to give you my openid credentials?

How it works is, you send your SE chat cookie and fkey to the XMPP server, which essentially allows it to become you by using your session
Understand of course that this implies you trust me, which the server will give you a disclaimer about
Now i feel I'm trustworthy, the server is running the latest code from SVN, and you can read it yourself, and you have my word that I'm not saving people's cookies and fkeys. But you can also run your own bridge, the code is open source (although I haven't decided on a license yet)
hm. This room's not working via XMPP...
Wait. That worked. @CRoss, say something again please?

testing, testing?
@Josh Is it working now?

There we go. That was strange
@CRoss Yup!

cool
good

1:17 PM

and I humbly suggest a very free (not GPL 1,2,3) license

@CRoss I'm leaning towards MIT or maybe Apache licenses but I really have no idea, when the project starts to get more interest (which it is starting to quickly now that it's getting more mature) I was going to ask the community, maybe in a meta question

@Josh sounds good
Apache is a fine license

Thanks for moving the messages :-)

the conversation makes more sense here
out of curiosity, what are your primary sites?

1:23 PM
@CRoss Stack Overflow mostly, although these days I spend most of my time on meta and in meta's chat, haha. But after SO, ServerFault and SuperUser. I'm trying to get started more on Unix and Linux, Apple and Gaming

cool

What about you?
I know I've seen you on Meta and SO a lot :-)

SO, MSO, Gaming, Mod on RPG. A touch of SU and SE

I'd love to participate more in gaming but I don't have the required knowledge :-) I'm always a few years behind on game it seems, lol
I really should check out RPG though, I played informal D&D as a kid all the time. Very informally. In fact you probably couldn't really call it D&D :-)

1:39 PM
@Josh We encourage all sorts of role playing

Of which I'm a huge fan :-)

well, you're certainly welcome, and we've got experts

My brother and I started a verbal role playing game when we were kids, it kept going so long I made up character sheets and eventually decided I was going to program a video game RPG out of it. This was when I was young and thought I could program anything with ease :-)

@Josh If you kept with it you might be giving Tarn Adams a run for his money

Yeah, I probably could have had something halfway decent if I had stuck with it. I actually have like 3 barely started versions, one text based, one where I was trying to code my own 2d engine myself using SDL (Legend of Zelda / Secret of Mana / Final Fantasy style), and the newest, a 3d version based on Dim3
Dim3, also known as Dimension 3, is a freeware open-source 3D game engine for Mac OS X created by Brian Barnes. It has been chosen as a staff pick for OS X development software by Apple. and featured as one of their "hot game building tools." dim3 has an entry in DevMaster's 3D engines database. dim3 uses OpenGL for rendering, OpenAL for audio, JavaScript for scripting, XML for data and Simple DirectMedia Layer for resolution switching and input. Components dim3 includes three applications: Engine, Editor, and the Animator. The Engine is the deployment application that runs games crea...

hmmm, cool
game development really has matured in recent years

Yeah, it sure has

@CRoss Just an FYI, I have been trying for the past 30 minutes to be able to post messages via XMPP. It looks like due to some unknown factors (probably stemming from how this chat handles authentication differently from MSO's chat) I am unable to get XMPP write support working at this time. :-( Just an FYI as we were discussing that earlier

3:24 PM
@Josh Good to know

@Josh :D glad to help :P

@badp LOL. I need to better track what messages crash it
Also as I'm sure you saw, Write Support EIPC FAIL

@Josh I actually didn't :/
