RELOAD!

Does reload mean I'm going to get some upvotes now?

By the, @nhgrif, I saw the other day that using pointers as a map key wasn't working. I meant to ask about it, but chat had moved way on and it slipped my mind. What was going on with that?

I haven't had much time to look at it, but... it wasn't working
Haha, I don't know exactly. Hadn't had time to debug.

Ah :p

And I actually added a new class to the project... a SQLViewController, which is a SQLConnection delegate
And it implements all the delegate methods and calls disconnect in the appropriate spots
So all you have to do is subclass that instead of a regular UIViewController, and you only have to implement some of the delegate methods, and you can do standard stuff with the other delegate methods.

12:03 AM
That would be quite convenient

So, you pretty much have to write connectionDidSucceed:, or else, what's the point?
But if you have just an insert/update/delete statement, you can ignore every other method if you want, and it will automatically close the connection, etc.
You can modify the SQLViewController to handle all errors/messages/etc in the same way.
Anyway, I haven't implemented this SQL code into our main app at work yet (that'll be a big project), but we have a smaller app, and I started rewriting it this week to implement this code.
We were going to rewrite it anyway, because currently it requires a webservice, and we're eliminating that. Anyway... with my SQL code, the app runs SOOOO much faster.
wow... wut....

EdHI've been working with the java.util.prefs.Preferences functionality (in Java 8, on a Windows machine). And it works, where I can write new keys to the Windows Registry. hey @Corbin

Hello, @Malachi

in CSS can I do this
li:hover ul li:hover ul {
	display:block;
	position:absolute;
	z-index:10;
	position
}

In theory, yes. I would definitely make sure all your targeted browsers handle that ok though. Nested meta-selectors make me kind of nervous.
(Also I'm assuming that last position is a typo?)
jsfiddle.net/x8G5b/1 The selector does at least select the proper thing in current Chrome/FF/IE.

I went to offset the list item so I can still see previous menu item

You're probably looking for either margin-left or padding-left then

I am having issues trying to get my pages to show up unless I publish them
I tried almost all day yesterday to get php functioning for aptana so I could test the pages on my computer before I went live. but this isn't a very active site yet. I might just make a Test site and upload to the test site I don't know yet

Are you using Windows, linux or Mac?
the easiest way to get a local setup is to just use apache with mod_php. You just have to add 1 or 2 config lines, change some paths, and you've got a localhost good to go

Windows 8.1 pro
I am going to try creating a Site in IIS
I already added PHP using the specified API installer thing
Web platform installer

Ah IIS..
I'm not very familiar with IIS unfortunately :/
The PHP installer is fairly well known for being a piece of shit btw. It's typically better to use the zip archives.
Maybe recently that's gotten better though

that is why I used the web platform installer.

Ah
Why IIS out of curiosity?

12:33 AM
it installs PHP manager into IIS
because it is already installed on the OS and I know it better than I know anything else

ah

but I don't know it all that well either....lol

I've only been unfortunate enough to use IIS with PHP once, and I hated it with a passion. Apache/nginx/lighttpd handle PHP much more naturally. Or at least they used to. I think MS has made a pretty big effort to support PHP better in the past few years.
If you're super desperate, you can just use PHP's built in self-server thing
php -S localhost:8080 -t C:\path\to\docroot

yeah I have a couple of Laptops and I think that one of them has PHP running on it

@Malachi I just posted a competing answer, I don't mean to steal your checkmark (codereview.stackexchange.com/a/46863/23788) - but I need to ask, is it just me or entering BuildCommand from ExecuteReader would open up a connection, and then when the function returns, the connection would be disposed before the client code can start iterating the reader?
Wouldn't that be throwing ObjectDisposedException's like there's no tomorrow?

12:36 AM
@Mat'sMug I couldn't make heads or tails of it either. it did look rather sketchy
@Mat'sMug too much encapsulation.

, ?

the connection should be a separate object completely along with the query itself

yeah

@Mat'sMug lol don't know what that was all about, I was thinking about having another thought I think.

well I had to edit my answer, I had

A: Hi! What brings you here today?

Jeff Gohlke What ideas do you have to help turn one-time contributors into repeat customers? I know this has been discussed a lot on Meta, so it might be beating a dead horse. But I think the biggest turnoff for potential contributors is the lack of voting. I know that when I first joined Code Review,...

> Actually, I think the community here at Code Review is one of the best on the Stack Exchange network. Whenever a new user comes and posts a question which isn't meant for this site, I've always seen them get a very kind welcome message and a likewise kind explanation of why their question doesn't belong here. And these almost always include an invitation to come back to the site once they get their code working.
> Really, that's very incredible for Stack Exchange, which is known for its brutality and, frankly, elitism. There's not much of that vibe here, and that's awesome.

I see you're a C# pro. I have to say, having only dabbled in it, I wish some of its features were in Java. I'd kill for operator overloading.
There's only so much BigDecimal result = someNumber.multiply(new BigDecimal("20.0")); you can stomach. haha

no linq either...

@Corbin I can't find the cp in the makefile, which is really odd.

Wow... What the hell is going on in my apartment building... Getting 70% packet loss on a connection with high strength x.x

@Corbin Sounds like interference. At work we have a conference room that has so many strong signals they all interfere to the point that you pretty much can't use wireless there at all.

Yeah. I'm thinking either interference or a faulty adapter.
My phone tends to be fine 85% of the time, but I do sometimes have to drop to LTE if I want to not hate life.
There's about 20 routers within range. It's pretty annoying. I wish my devices all supported 5ghz :/
I'm hoping it's not interference since that's something I can't fix. Faulty adapter, I can.

I definitely prefer 5 GHz. Years ago at a place I used to work, we had lots of trouble with wireless that nearly all went away when we switched to 5 GHz.

Yeah. My router actually supports 5GHz, but my phone is the only device I have that supports it. 5 GHz seems to be tons better than 2.4. I'm sure after a while though, everyone will move to 5GHz, and the problem will come back up (although 5GHz has more channels, so hopefully it won't be as bad)

@Corbin Shouldn't be nearly as bad, and the newer standards include the ability for a base station to "listen" and automatically choose a channel based on what's in use. I don't remember for sure, but I think that's optional in 802.11n, but mandatory (or at least a lot more common) in 802.11ac.

Every router I've ever had has done that for 2.4, but it should help if it is actually mandated. All it takes is one rogue device :/.
Seems 2.4GHz is certainly having some problems with interference (30ms ping vs 12ms ping), but I think the laptop has a shit adapter. My phone had less than 1% drop rate.
This is annoying...

I have to admit, I never really "got" most Scotch though. To me, Scotches pretty much form a progression from terrible to mediocre--and if you kept going the same direction a half dozen more steps past the best Scotches, you'd get to something that tasted suspiciously like somewhat below-average Cognac.

5:33 AM
it seems like there are people who like scotch and people who like cognac...from my experience, there isn't much overlap
I've tried Hennessy XO and I really didn't enjoy it

I'd personally take a good wine over either one, but at least I can understand how people can really like a good cognac. Scotch never seems nearly as well balanced or integrated (to me).

I think it's scotch -> beer drinkers spirit, cognac -> wine drinkers spirit

I'm a cider person, followed by a short list of mixed drink, and then wine.

I find cider too sweet :(

@Yuushi The latter would certainly make some sense, given that Cognac is distilled wine (as is brandy in general).

5:43 AM
yes, exactly

It is very rare that something is too sweet for me.

and scotch is basically distilled grain :)

Beer, on the other hand, I just can't drink.

@Yuushi Yes, but generally different grain from that used to make most beer. Beer is mostly made from barley and/or wheat, where whiskeys are mostly made from Rye and/or corn.
@Donald.McLean Nobody with any real taste can (or will, anyway).

haha

lol

I'm getting close to having something to review. Perhaps another week.

5:56 AM
It occurred to me (after I'd posted it in an answer) that I should post my sockets code in a question for review...

And I've already bumped six zombies, many of which were lacking language tags.

@Jamal A fine thing, but couldn't you have found something better than JavaScript and PHP to bump? Oh wait, at least you did include one Haskell question.

And Ruby.

@Jamal I said "better than".
I suppose it's an understandable misunderstanding though: anything is better than PHP.

Must we discriminate different zombies? Don't they all deserve equal treatment (finally getting shot in the head)?

6:04 AM
@Jamal Yes--each must go to the proper one of the seven rings of hell.

Does that mean PHP zombies should be killed with RPGs rather than wimpy shotguns?

@Jamal Nuke 'em!

It would be nice to watch us go to 97% answered by deleting all the PHP zombies, but that wouldn't be recommended.

@Jamal I can think of much better reasons than mere percentages to nuke PHP.
That said, it's getting late--I'm going to bed.

Don't let the PHP ghost haunt you in your sleep! Goodnight!

6:17 AM
I'm too busy missing my wife and kids to be bothered by PHP.

:-(

@JerryCoffin Night

Thanks guys. Good night.

user40501Please help I have a MySQL table with a very large data. What I need is to find and separate duplicates from the unique rows Let's say this is my table: indx, data_lname, data_fname, data_mname, data_dob, data_mobile What i'm doing right now is selecting all the rows in one query and then compa...

Q: My database class extends MySQLi

HeartRider_msvThe following is a small class I extended MySQLi. I'm going to use this in my upcoming projects, but my main reason to do this class is learning, so I would like to submit this for your review, tell me if there are any bugs or improvements to be made. NOTES: I know about prepared statements, ...

6:44 AM
At some point, I should make an attempt at some of the PHP zombies... PHP is just so unpleasant to review though :/. Well, at least most of the most of the questions.

:D

As much as I hate to say it, there's just a certain set of problems that are present in nearly every PHP question. It's just tedious :/

I've sort of stopped talking about using namespace std. If it were that serious, I could just kill every remaining C++ zombie that uses that.

7:09 AM
Eh, I always just link the Stack Overflow post about it.
It gets super, super old saying it over and over again, but if someone forms that habit and makes the mistake of putting it into a header, it can be codebase-ruining

Me, too. I blame the school(s) or the books or wherever this is still being used.

I just wish all the shit books and misinformed professors would stop teaching C++ as "ok, the first thing you're going to do is type out main, include 9 unnecessary headers and put using namespace std;"
3
Blerh. I'm going to head to bed before I can no longer resist the urge to bitch about PHP and C++ learning materials... Bye, everyone.

I still have a quiz to study for tomorrow. :-/ Goodnight.

@200_success Are you there?
Any mod available? This question should probably be moved to StackOverflow.
Ow. I rejected a valid edit on an answer thinking it was on a question -____-

Soloing Diablo III feels so not worth it :(

@Morwenn I got it.

Thanks :)

@Morwenn Thanks. You can just flag the question for moderator attention next time.

Anyone knows something interesting to program?

Some Easy Java Project, perhaps?

I'd like to use Java 8 yes :p
I'm just on the usual out-of-motivation right after (almost) having completed one quartile of the study year and had exam yesterday
And spent some of my efforts on the last week, so much that is damaged my brain appereantly.

Q: The class methods or helper class?

What is better design - to implement some basic XML operations such as create XML document, write the elements and attributes of XML doc...

@SimonAndréForsberg What do you think is an intersting (Java (8)) AI project?
Also would like to try out JavaFX 8

@skiwi I'm extremely interested in AIs for some games. I'd really like to see a more intelligent UTTT AI, preferably one that could also learn to play regular TTT, Connect Four, Quantum TTT, etc...

@200_success Right. I often forget that option.

And I'd also like to see a somewhat intelligent AI for Card Fighting games, especially Castle Wars 2 and Hearthstone.

Intelligent AI for CCG's seems interesting
Would need some quite simple concept though
As making it too complicatd means motivation failure:D
Though it already would get fairly complex

10:02 AM
@skiwi Have you seen my AI-related CR question?

@SimonAndréForsberg Yeah, about a few times ^^
Or perhaps not...
As this is the CR question

Castle Wars 2 is fairly simple, even though an even simpler CCG could be made easily. I have some ideas on how to structure it all, but I hope you perhaps have even more ideas.

hi all

Most simple CCG? Every card has 1 health and 1 damage, you have 1 life, you lose when all your life is gone. There is one card that does 2 damage.
I think it would be cool to make a 2D representation of a decision-tree based upon a CCG :o
I'd like it slightly more complex, but does it really need to get more complex than that?
@SimonAndréForsberg Here, have a badge for your question.

@skiwi Haha, OK, perhaps not that simple.
@skiwi 2D representation of a decision-tree sounds interesting, not sure how exactly you mean. I'm curious though about how big the decision-tree would become...
And thanks for the badge, and monking @rolfl

@coredump - nice. Your answer too. You should visit the 2nd Monitor chat room to discover another side of Code Review. — rolfl ♦ 20 secs ago

@all: does it make sense to encourage people to post their rewritten code as answer to their questions?
it would give the opportunity for them to get into answering and getting further votes

@rolfl I'll be going to Taizé in France. In the middle of nowhere.

Ahh ... envious...

@rolfl: Do you think the idea is worth starting a meta question on user-retention?

Yes
Make a general "How to retain users" question ... and add your answer ;-)

A: How to retain users?
