@egreg: Mathematica also uses {} only for 2 or more characters as follows.
Apply[Plus, HoldForm@2^# & /@ Range[10]] // TeXForm
2^{10}+2^9+2^8+2^7+2^6+2^5+2^4+2^3+2^2+2

I put a sty file in `/home/faheem/texmf`, but the system is not finding it. I get
`
ERROR: LaTeX Error: File `insertname.sty' not found
Any suggestions of dumb things I might be doing wrong or how to debug?

@FaheemMitha Files need to be in the right place: /home/faheem/texmf/tex/latex/

@JosephWright Oh. thanks.
Is it possible to put symbolic links in /home/faheem/texmf/tex/latex/ that point somewhere else?

@FaheemMitha Yes
@FaheemMitha That's how I do my development work!

@JosephWright Thanks. The reason is that I version control my files, and I don't want to version control /home/faheem/texmf/tex/latex/ separately.

@FaheemMitha I have much the same with some of my stuff (beamer, for example), although for most of my code I've got .dtx files so have to install in any case (version control on .dtx not on .sty)

9:25 AM
@JosephWright I think my sty files are too small to merit a dtx format.

9:41 AM
@JosephWright: \usepackage{hummingbird} :)
@Tangshutao You're welcome. I know no Chinese, but some LaTeX. ;-)egreg 20 hours ago

@cgnieder Oh my! The LaTeX3 hymn? :)
L3 experts: how do you guys deal with L3 and TikZ? \ExplSyntaxOff before TikZ stuff?

9:58 AM
@PauloCereda well, the lyrics are not explicitly about LaTeX3 but... ;)

@cgnieder Details, details. :)

@PauloCereda I think we had a question about that...

@cgnieder Do we? Oh.
@cgnieder: I think Frank's answer helps me here. :) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/109379/…

@PauloCereda can't find it, though... maybe I'm mistaken
@PauloCereda the main problem I had is that TikZ sometimes expects the colon : with catcode other

@cgnieder Oh. Quite sad I can't write a package to be used in L3 code without using L3. :P

10:06 AM
In chemformula I did \tl_const:Nx \c_chemformula_colon_tl { \token_to_str:N : }and used \c_chemformula_colon_tl where needed

@cgnieder Hey that's not fair, you know what you are doing. :P

@PauloCereda No: just pretending :p

@cgnieder Hey that's my situation. :)

@PauloCereda :)
@PauloCereda That's the one I had in mind: tex.stackexchange.com/q/57424

Q: How to make female bosom look bigger?

user2664856When photographing women they often want the bosom to appear as big as possible. I tried with light coming from different positions but was not satisfied with the results. Are there any tricks to achieve this?

Oh my.
Apparently we can get any question from any of the network sites and post it in our own domains by adding some magic keywords: How to make female bosom look bigger in TikZ? :)
My pre-schooler is out of control, and I feel like my parents are undermining my relationship and authority with her without loading hyperref?

10:27 AM
@PauloCereda some people do have important problems...

@cgnieder LOL indeed.

@PauloCereda :)

If I go with \ProvidesExplPackage, we have the expl3 syntax all over? TikZ hell. :(

10:48 AM
@PauloCereda yes, rather unfortunate... that's why in chemmacros.sty I actually do use \ExplSyntaxOff ... \ExplSyntaxOn in one or two places :/

10:59 AM
@cgnieder :)

11:22 AM
@JosephWright: around? :)

ppr
Hi. Is there a package which handles quotation at the very beginning of a article/book. These quotations are often in italic and left side aligned.

@ppr epigraph?
@cgnieder: No L3 for me this time: github.com/cereda/l3hummingbird :)
And yes, the name is against the rules. :P

ppr
@PauloCereda thanks!

@ppr My pleasure. :) Take a look at the class manual you are using, it might implement something similar without the need of using an external package. :)

12:00 PM
@PauloCereda I checked that reply with google translate I hoped it would be something inappropriate but it was very proper:(

@DavidCarlisle Hey that's very mean. :)

@PauloCereda A bit busy

@JosephWright quick glance then: github.com/cereda/l3hummingbird I rewrote the whole bad thing and added some options. :)

@PauloCereda I mean, it has some nice ideas, and it's much better than Mathematica, Matlab or Maple. But still, some things are stupid: No switch-case, ridiculous ... if ... else ..., and missing nargout

@PauloCereda No suffix, please!
\RequirePackage{xparse}
\NewDocumentCommand{\hummingbird}{s}{%
  \IfBooleanTF{#1}{\explbanner}{\expllogo}%
}

@egreg Oh thanks! :) It was actually my first attempt, but since TikZ and L3 were having a bad time, I decided to try something with "old" LaTeX stuff. And came up with the suffix stuff from the UK FAQ thingy. :) Anyway, I'll update it. :)
@egreg: updated, thanks. :)
@egreg: LaTeX3 is way better. :)

1:27 PM
@PauloCereda The package will be used for LaTeX3, it's pointless using suffix just for a *-variant, isn't it?

@egreg Indeed. :) Quite ironic. :)

Q: A single question for configuring editors to do LaTeX/Biber compilation?

Joseph WrightWe have various questions from people wanting to set up their editor(s) for use with Biber, or struggling to get the LaTeX/Biber/LaTeX workflow to work: see for example Biblatex, Biber, and LaTeX: citations undefined. This is mainly because most editors come pre-set for LaTeX/BibTeX/LaTeX/LaTeX o...

Feedback on my plan welcome

@JosephWright There is nearly the same question at @stefankottwitz' texwelt.de (see Wie verwende ich biber in meinem Editor.
@JosephWright I think the question is well defined, but one remark: AFAIR \addbibresource needs the fileending .bib => \jobname.bib
The fact, that biber doesn't come with 64-bit MikTeX might be worth mentioning as well.

4:06 PM
@Johannes_B I'll fix that
@Johannes_B Hmm, perhaps
@Johannes_B Ah yes: we just have to translate :-)

I would like to number every line of a LaTeX document (in order to simply the indication of mistakes : for example, line 345 problem of grammar). Do you know how can I do this?

@ppr there's the lineno package, but it doesn't do a good job.

@tohecz My first thought was also lineno. Can you tell me some drawbacks?

@PauloCereda I love the fluentness of mmin in italic CMR font ;)
@Johannes_B @ppr it doesn't put numbers to paragraphs that end in a displayed equation, and it fails in some other similar cases.

@tohecz Oh ok, never had problems so far. Thanks a lot.

4:20 PM
my ugly solution is to add numbers in the left margin, staring with 1 at the top of the page and being in the distance of \baselineskip until the very bottom. It works quite nicely, just that it doesn't number lines, rather "positions in the document", as a sort-of grid.

ppr
@tohecz thanks lineno does the job for my simple non-mathematical document.
@tohecz @Johannes_B A good point of lineno is that it seems to not change the layout of the text (because the number are in the margin), isn't it?

5:12 PM
@ppr it doesn't change the layout, that's right.

6:05 PM
!!/eightball is epsilon martensite a phase?

@JosephWright: I'm attempting to answer the Meta question on unflagging using some references on Meta.SO, but have a question ...
...if mods "handle a flag" before it reaches the review queue, does it stop it from reaching the review queue?

@tohecz how do you do that? does it work for math?

I have a nasty code for it but I think I gave an answer about it once here, lemme see
@FaheemMitha ok, I have not put it on the site. I basically just add some "overlay" in the left header using the package fancyhdr

6:22 PM
@tohecz I see. I'd be interested in details. Shall I post a question? Or, of course, you could.
let me see if someone has already
Heavens. there are over 100 questions with the tag line-numbering.

@FaheemMitha there are so many questions because the process is so problematic.
I'll go home in a short time anways, so maybe tomorrow or so

@tohecz Ok.

6:46 PM
I've a question for experts
In classicthesis is it possible to redefine the chapternumbering in TOC -> Partnumber.Chapternumber ?

7:01 PM
@s__C Not easily, I'm afraid. Why would you want it? In the TOC the subdivisions are clear.

eheh please tell my supervisor...
in fact I'm advised to reset the chapter numbering in parts. for more clarity Partnumber.Chapternumber would be nicer

@s__C That's simply wrong; chapters should be numbered independently from parts. How many chapters does your dissertation have? For having parts with number resets I'd say from twelve upward. ;-)

well that's what I think too

@egreg I wouldn't agree on this one. Chapter 67 is better than Chapter VI.11

else how to make parts stand out more in toc ?

7:07 PM
@s__C do you need them to? :)

now chapters are in sc and parts in lowercase

@s__C ... bold lowercase?
anyways, I gotta go, see you all tomorrow!
oh no! My fromagerie closes sooner than when I can get there!

$nah tohecz
spacedallcaps would be nice

@tohecz Yes, of course.
@s__C Don't use classicthesis, if you want that. ;-)

nah @egreg
I'll use classicthesis
just don't understand why parts are in \normalfont in the TOC

7:13 PM
@s__C Because that's the way Bringhurst sets his book. Small is beautiful.

@egreg This! @s__C

7:41 PM
What does the \fi stand for at the end of a \iffalse block?

@Anonymous \fi is the end of the \if... block.
You'll often see \ifnum...\else...\fi, or \ifdim...\else...\fi, or \ifodd...\else...\fi.

8:07 PM
But what does it stand for?

@Anonymous Nothing, it's a primitive
@Anonymous If you want to read it, 'finish if' I guess

8:32 PM
@PauloCereda :)

8:49 PM
@Anonymous It is used also in Pascal

1 hour later…
9:53 PM
@egreg fi? I think you mean shell script. :)

10:06 PM
@PauloCereda The code of TeX the program is full of fi tokens.

@egreg Only if they defined as some sort of macro. :) As far as I remember, Pascal does not have fi. :)

@PauloCereda This shows how much I know of programming languages. ;-)

@egreg You know one that pwns all. :)

10:55 PM
@egreg But isn't that WEB?
...I'm talking about tex.web, which doesn't show an if...fi construction.

oopsie, wrong window :P

11:16 PM
How do I make sure my text goes under images?
It keeps juts shoving the images to the bottom of the document.

Q: How to influence the position of float environments like figure and table in LaTeX?

Marco DanielHow to influence the position of float environments like figure and table in LaTeX? This is a general question and should collect useful answers for all users. I hope we can use this as a reference

Gracias

@PauloCereda Another "nice answer" badge thanks to newunicodechar :)

So it looks like I should just do the [h] command, but I don't know why it's not pushing my text below it...

@Anonymous No, using [h] only is wrong. If the float can't be placed “here”, it's left in the queue and blocks all the following floats. Use [htp].

11:23 PM
It seems Gerd Neugebauer (current maintainer and programmer of the CTAN web portal) has joined TeX.sx: tex.stackexchange.com/a/154301

@egreg That still didn't work. Hm...
\begin{figure}[htp]
\centering
\includegraphics[width=90mm]{Interference}
\caption{Contour Plot of Substrate}
\label{Ref}
\end{figure}

\begin{figure}[htp]
\centering
\includegraphics[width=90mm]{Interference2}
\caption{3D Plot of Substrate}
\label{Ref}
\end{figure}

And for comparison from the Lloyd's Mirror Powerpoint

\begin{figure}[htp]
\centering
\includegraphics[width=90mm]{Lloyd}
\caption{Llyod's Miror}
\label{Ref}
\end{figure}
Pushes the "And...." line above the images.

You shouldn't type your text assuming that the float will be there. Write something like And, for a comparison from the Lloyd's Mirror Powerpoint, see figure~\ref{Ref}.
Of course the argument of \label should be different for each caption.

I see. But if I were to want the float to be there, is there a way to assure that?

@Anonymous \usepackage{float} , and \begin{figure}[H].

@TorbjørnT. Anathema!
@TorbjørnT. You're in danger of TeXcommunication

11:34 PM
Thank you!

@egreg Well, yeah. I know.

@egreg :)
