6:00 PM
The Hilton right across the street from the convention center

I wanna go to TechEd NA too :(

@MathiasR.Jessen Beg your boss!

2 years in a row they've ditched me because they needed another ticket to get new potential employees on board

Bah
Yeah one of my friends, the principal IT architect at another company, keeps getting denied and he's about to quit because of it

I'm about to quit because of it

6:11 PM
You Microsoft people

@RyanRies rich fuck

New client needs internet... is 50Mbps down/5Mbps up an acceptable rate for a small business?

@ewwhite totally. Assuming no large outbound load that'll overload that. (cloud backups?)

Corporate credit card ftw
2

@ewwhite we're at ~30mbit average with around 2000 pc's

6:22 PM
@MikeyB They are on 7Mbps down 768k up right now

so yes, 50mbit is probably enough for a SMB..

this is a social media/blog/party promoter... dubfrequency.com
They basically need to upload things to social media
and consume youtube

unless they're uploading uncompressed AVI, I think you're good with 50mbit .. really..

@RyanRies Then why slum it at the Hilton?

@pauska that's 50Mbps download... only 5Mbps upload.
but that should be okay for a 12-person office.

6:27 PM
ohhh

And @ScottPack The user "warren" doesn't like any answers...
5
Q: Can you change the virtual NIC type after building a VM?

warrenWhen building a VM, you can select which virtual device type you would like a vNIC to be (E1000, VMXNET3, etc). After the VM is created, can you change the type of vNIC in use on a given connection (eg from E1000 to VMXNET3)? If so, how?

@ScottPack I think either you or @MDMarra posted that a long time ago

Well.. what kind of pipe are we talking about. It's not ADSL, is it? :(

@pauska Cable modem

@ewwhite Which is funny because every one of the answers is a different way of doing it.

6:28 PM
They're on ADSL now, and it's super slow.

both asymmetrical then

@ScottPack naw, he said my answer was a duplicate.

@ScottPack I just wanted to be within walking distance of the convention center

lots of uploads will kill their download rate and latency.. but I'm sure you know that already
can't they get a 10mbit fibre?

@ewwhite I suppose I could post another answer recommending he delete and completely recreate the guest....

6:29 PM
@pauska yes, no symmetrical service available in this neighborhood... Because American infrastructure sucks.

not even G.SHDSL?

@pauska this is in a really bad neighborhood... next to my produce companies in Los Angeles... and yes, the produce companies are finally getting fiber...

they can bond up to 16mbit with certain dslam's

@ewwhite Which is bullshit because John's is factually wrong.

@RyanRies we're 8 blocks away, and that's also walking distance :)

6:30 PM
@ewwhite You think US infrastructure sucks? At least you have choices. We were trying to get something better than 6Mb/512Kb DSL service in fucking Toronto.

@pauska Not for an American.
4

@ScottPack except New York

@MikeyB Most people in the US don't really have any bandwidth choices

besides, Houston have trams

@MikeyB Not really. My choices are DSL from the telephone company, Cable from the cable company, or dialup.

6:31 PM
New Yorkers are slim because food is expensive, walking, cigarettes and cocaine.

And it's an evolutionary disavantage to be fat in New York. You can't fit on subways, in cabs, or on the sidewalk.

@MikeyB That is sad... But so is watching Love it or List it, in which they always seem to be in Toronto neighborhoods... Crappy housing-stock.

@MikeyB @jscott @ewwhite For multi-U devices do you label them as the bottom most unit or give the range?

@ScottPack Range... "ProLiant DL380p Gen8 - fluffer.brazzers.local - Rack units 18-19"

@ewwhite So is fluffer.brazzers.local the load balancer for the DCs?

6:42 PM
something like that...
in reality, the load balancers were Supermicro 5015's... but I can dream

Or would the flufflers be the web accelerators?
2

Heh heh... bootstrap ... heh heh...

6:57 PM
@ScottPack Do they even still have fluffers? Are you sure they weren't obsoleted by the superior technology of viagra and cialis?

@freiheit I actually don't know, you'll have to ask our resident porn expert, @ewwhite.

@ScottPack prawn?

I don't care for shellfish.

@freiheit yes, fluffers.

@ScottPack I just label at their bottom U. The "height" column lets us know how many Us they consume.

7:07 PM
@jscott That was my notion.

Mind you, I think there must be a better way than an unwieldy, homebrew, spreadsheet. But then I lose hours messing with something like RackTables and I'm reminded that "nope", a simple spreadsheet is probably more than enough.

We use dokuwiki internally so I'm just formatting in a table there and attaching a Visio

@jscott didn't I ask this question before?

7:26 PM
@ewwhite Quite possibly. It seems to be a recurring theme for sysadmins, at least here in chat. There's Visio, and those who love/master it... then everything else (RackTables, etc) which are each of varying quality/usefulness.

@jscott And then that one guy with an inhouse tool that's awesome but not quite able to be released open-source.... ;)

sup n00bs?

@freiheit So exactly like the other OSS tools, he just hasn't copy/pasted a LICENSE file? :)

@jscott Plus some crazy shit that requires documentation...
@MDMarra First day of classes at the university, so naturally there's a major moodle update. That's what's up. :)

fun

7:31 PM
How about a CMDB that procedurally generates a Visio when you click the Export button

A perl-based config, which generates m4 files, which generates a makefile, which checks its deps (which cannot be satisfied on any distro using default repos), which calls arbitrary SQL from the maintainer's blog using wget.
2

@RyanRies Use graphviz for that.

Oh god OH god OH GOD. That's worse than curl | sudo bash

(graphviz won't give you Visio output, you can totally output a set of relations and get a drawing out of it)

7:36 PM
@jscott Are you installing bro too?

Q: Microsoft is blocking mail from entire netblock. ISP doesn't know what to do?

ewwhiteI recently moved a client from basic T1 service to a multi-site MPLS solution with same vendor. The ISP, XO Communications, provided a decade of stable service as a T1 provider. The process of moving to the MPLS was a bit rocky and involved an IP address reassignment. Following the firewall, lin...

because produce companies have ever worse clients...
aol.com, hotmail.com, hotmale.com, msn.com, comcast.net...

@RyanRies Please do this.

@ScottPack If I were to actually do this, I'd give them the range.

@MikeyB Some people just want to watch the world burn

@DennisKaarsemaker Dog's gonna bite you for using M4.

7:39 PM
@RyanRies Can you make it generate an Apple instead?

@voretaq7 Well you want sendmail support, right?

You know who else used M4? Nazis.
2

@voretaq7 so tempted to flag that....

@DennisKaarsemaker I'll just mark it as invalid :P

Dan
7:44 PM
I've come in to ask one single question

@Dan Yes, Doge is the official mascot of M4.

Dan
Is there anything more infuriating than someone who seeks you out, asks your advice and then chooses to completely fucking ignore everything you say?
5

@Dan Nope.

@Dan That's why I left my last job
well, partly why

Dan
@voretaq7 MIL sent over a link to a cheap shitty £30 all-in-one supermarket inkjet. I said no, I don't advise because you use it too infrequently and ink will be expensive. Let me have a look around and/or if you can put up without colour, I'd recommend laser

7:45 PM
@Dan hell get a fucking color laser printer

Dan
Anyway, she's chosen to totally ignore the above advice and no doubt I'll be installing and then looking after this POS

seriously, mine was $200. I'm still on the original "starter" color toner.

Dan
@voretaq7 I couldn't agree more, but cost prohibitive. Plus, I need to invest soon so I could maybe get that and she could use her B&W day to day

you can get 'em cheaper than that at least in the US

Dan
@voretaq7 What's yours?

7:47 PM
some crappy lexmark that I don't remember the model number of :P
it doesn't do duplexing, but other than that it's awesome.

Dan
Anyway, I don't even know why I'm bothering to think about it now, it'll just end up in a row if I push it too hard
Problem is, like a lot of people, she thinks I'm on the pulse of desktop IT - when the truth is, I know fuck all about desktop stuff and printers and that

@Dan The toner for that inkjet will exceed the cost of the printer itself...

kce
Sweet. My WSUS/SUP server is hosed.

Dan
@NathanC I know :(

I have an all-in-one canon personally that i bought at the start of college for $40. Still runs perfectly...although I don't use it often. Cartridges cost ~$50 for a set

7:51 PM
@Dan Take a job in security, you'll get used to it.

Dan
@ScottPack Who cares about that
Oh, my filez :(

@kce Ouch. To shreds you say?

Yeah....that VTL backup system? That should probably not be connectable from the Internet over telnet using default credentials. That seems like a less than stellar idea.
2

"Congratulations! Dell OpenManage Network Manager has been successfully installed"
inb4implosion

Dan
@ScottPack :D

kce
7:53 PM
DBA migrated the SCCM database from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2012. I think something in the installation stepped on some IIS settings

Tomcat eating 1.2 GB and hasn't served a single page yet. Neat.

Welcome to Tomcat

kce
Re-installed WSUS role and the problem still persists so something is all messed up.

I think this box need moar RAM
@kce What "problem" anyway?
oh...damnit...
it shares a port with my unifi controller >.> whoops

kce
@NathanC - WSUS won't start with the Application Pool set to Intergrated: "HTTP Error 500.24 - Internal Server Error

An ASP.NET setting has been detected that does not apply in Integrated managed pipeline mode."

7:57 PM
Oh...AppPool crap.

Dan
Using the Pearson Vue website is like going back to 1997

it is
same with Prometric
both are trash

kce
If I set the AppPool to Classic, I can get it to start but none of the WSUS services work:
- Client Web Service (Event ID 12022)
- API Remoting Web Service (Event ID 12012)
- DSS Authentication Web Service (Event ID 12052)
- SimpleAuth Web Service (Event ID 12042)
- Server Synchronization Web Service (Event ID 12032)
- Reporting Web Service (Event ID 12002)

@kce Wait...how did an SCCM upgrade nuke your wsus? You do have them on separate boxes, right?

Dan
@MDMarra I find it insane that I have to select an exam centre (And only 4 options at a time) and THEN have to go through each one individually to find an appointment. Talk about backwards

7:59 PM
yup

Bah, meeting.... bbl

Dan
And as if that weren't enough, at least 3 I've clicked don't ever offer the exam at all ever

what exam

kce
@NathanC - Nope. SCCM Site Server has WSUS installed on it for Software Update Point. Our DBA upgraded the install of MS SQL to 2012 and I think something in that process goobered it all up.

Dan
@MDMarra For complete shits and giggles (Cos honestly, I don't hold out much hope), I was gonna book the Citrix Expert exam for Sat

8:00 PM
nice
good luck if you ever navigate the website

Dan
@MDMarra Well, I passed the first tier (Associate) last Thursday so had a bash at the Pro tier on Sat and passed that. Thought I might try the hatrick
@MDMarra Don't joke - somewhere along the line I'm now stuck with the e-mail address of $CurrentPlace as my username, and I don't think I can ever changing it without risking losing the association between my Citrix username and my certs

I'm the same way with VMware
I had to hvae a partner account to skip the VCP class and still get the cert
So I have a VMware account with work address and a pearson account with a home one
I think

Dan
Citrix is similar, here's what I have
1) Citrix Certification Account
2) Citrix Training Account (Somehow not linked to the above)
3) Citrix User Account (Personal)
4) Citrix User Account (Work, associated with company)
5) Citrix User Account (My new company)
6) Citrix Pearson Vue Account
And on that note - fuck it, fuck them and fuck you
Tea time!

byebye

8:15 PM
Argh... so tempted to pick up one of the high-end Cisco APs for home at NFR pricing…

@MikeyB Slippery slope. Then you get a second. Then you get a controller.

howdy all

The entire Arsenal game has been one giant stoppage so far

aresnal? :)

soccer (UK translation: football)

8:19 PM
Arsenal mate
not ARESnal

haaaa
typo
I hate this keyboard

but yes, arsenal should win that
but I hope not
:)
Pains me that they got Mezut.. he should have gone to manu
stupid fellaini purchase

11 of the first 20 minutes have been injury stoppage so far

Ruby developers fucking suck

it says 5 minutes here

8:22 PM
There was just a 7 minute one that ended a second ago
I've got it on TV

I don't have premier league, too damn expensive
it's like $70/m here

A few of the channels in the regular cable package carry some of the games here

@MDMarra Can you find the dev speak?

'Can you do me a favor? If it's not already installed can you install php-gd with php-frm?'

all of it?

mostly the last bit
le sigh
How are you guys?

8:26 PM
@pauska I pay $200/season for the baseball package every year. If I didn't I'd only get a dozen Boston games per year
Streaming HD to Apple TV
If I bought it through my TV company, it'd be more

@mossy lol php-frm

What's wrong with FPM? I use it :)
fast as hell now with opcode baked in 5.5
@MDMarra balls..

Bad defense

@pauska bawls

wow
that was brutal

8:36 PM
balllllls

haha you're like 45 seconds behind me
that second goal was so bad

no I wasn't paying attention
and I'm watch a text coverage.. no video

ah
The second goal - two defenders on him, put the shot through one of their legs

So, when you're hiring someone for a low-level job and you want to screen for basic competency in the PC realm, is there credential that's even better than an A+ certification?

@Skyhawk Bartending license.

8:39 PM
@Skyhawk Can they help their mother format a Word document from 1,000 miles away over the phone

@Skyhawk For Microsoft shops, there are entry level MTA certification now, but they haven't been out there nearly long enough to expect people to have them.

@pauska The developer said "frm" not "fpm"

@voretaq7 A+ costs an absurd $376 retail, bartending license probably costs more.
@MDMarra Yeah. My students will be getting all four of the MTAs.

thats what it is

@MDMarra Those, we can site license. Unfortunately we can't site license CompTIA.

8:40 PM
MTA not MCA

Yeah, MCA is the honorary certificate that Ballmer will be given at his retirement party.

ha

I'll leave whatever "A" stands for to your imagination.

They've killed the MCA/MCM programs now

@Skyhawk yes, but the bartending license can actually get you gainful employment! :)

8:41 PM
There used to be a real MCA
Microsoft Certified Architect
The pre-req for it was one or more MCMs

Presumably because no one was earning them?

Not sure about MCA but I know MCM rotations were two weeks long and happened once a quarter. I'm told attendance was typically 15-25
They didn't explain why they killed them off - just that their focus has changed and would be changing their certification paths to match
Basically "moar cloud, less on-prem expertise"

@ewwhite Do you know the term ratchet?

@JoelESalas It's a type of LART right? :)

@voretaq7 Yes, this is the proper application of said LART: i.imgur.com/L5kMTK0.jpg (surgery picture)

8:50 PM
@pauska arse 'n all

Well, that's gross.

@MikeyB So much for eating lunch.
4

Surprisingly did not make me sick to my stomach. Just kinda stared at it like "huh, that's nasty."

@MikeyB uhhh?

8:52 PM
@freiheit Isn't that supposed to move?

@MikeyB . . . now is that a pig, or did somebody not pay their mechanic?

@voretaq7 LOL… scoliosis surgery. You can imagine how they'll be manipulating the spine back into place and pinning it down - pretty cool.

@MikeyB innnnteresting

@MikeyB What is that?
nvm read further down

@MarkHenderson "You may be a little sore when you wake up from surgery."

8:59 PM
@MikeyB Yeah; no shit

@MikeyB "Yeah, we just rebuilt your entire body from scratch. There will be some bugs to sort out"

@MikeyB ouch

Dubsteb and scotch - not an unreasonable combination at all!

Dubscotch

9:19 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker The only unreasonable part is that you're not sharing the scotch

@freiheit let me fax you some...

Cooking salmon tonight :D

om nom
I had rainbow trout

hooray - work is getting me a new iPhone
now time to go home

9:36 PM
@cole You're happy about this?
If someone wanted to give me an iPhone, I'd wonder just how much they hated me.

@MichaelHampton It's just a little NSA-infiltrated! It's still good!

@MichaelHampton last year everyone got an ipad from work. Sold it while still shrinkwrapped.

I'd probably have to do the same.

I don't understand the iPrecious hate
it's no more or less shit than an android device

Ever tried to sideload an app onto an iPhone?

9:43 PM
@MichaelHampton Nope. No reason to.

Q: Is buying hardware from amazon "safe"? The prices I'm seeing on Amazon are 1/3 of the price we pay locally

@voretaq7 Everything you could possibly ever want is in the walled garden?
@MarkHenderson If it actually is being sold by Amazon, then yes. Be wary of third party sellers though.

@MichaelHampton Interesting
Cos some of this shit seems too good to be true

@MichaelHampton I've yet to encounter something that isn't. I have VoIP, SSH, VNC, Telnet, a web browser, a tuning fork, a thingy that reads barcodes, some flight-planning software, and a couple of games. What am I missing?

9:46 PM
@MarkHenderson Yes, that's a third party seller. Check them out carefully before you buy.

Oh, just noticed that's not even new
That's why it's so cheap
Sneaky

@MichaelHampton Thanks
:13167652 I'm looking for more like 60% off :P
Actually I'm just collating a spreadsheet of costs for approval at the moment

There was someone selling a "HP Server" on Amazon, someone here bought one, got a CD Drive instead.

@ChrisS Nasty
Does Amazon do any sort of Buyer Protection a-la what eBay does?

9:55 PM
@MarkHenderson They're very good about returns, generally. I've never had them reject a return for any reason.

@MarkHenderson Not as well as I'd expect. They'll force a return, so you're not out money, but they don't take down the advertisement, and don't force a seller to ship what was advertised.

Better than a kick in the balls I guess
