Q: Please welcome your new moderators, Balanced Mama and Karl Bielefeldt

Tim PostAfter Torben And Cabbey stepped down, we began the search for some new awesome moderators to lead the Parenting SE community toward its goal of graduation. I'm happy to say, we've found two excellent choices: Both long-term users of the site have shown nothing but patience, fairness and ...

Congratulations and thank you @KarlBielefeldt and @balancedmama!

5:25 PM
congrats @balancedmama and @KarlBielefeldt

Thanks guys. Big shoes to fill.

6:19 PM
Congratulations @balancedmama and @KarlBielefeldt!! I'm very happy that you volunteered, and that you were chosen. Gambatte kudasai!

Thanks guys! I hope we'll do you proud.

That blog post from Wil Wheaton is good. I'm thinking that we could get a lot of attention if he'd mention this site even once. So the question is, how could that be achieved? Would it be smart simply to ask him if he'd do it, ond/or what it would take?
Might be a naive/lazy approach but it wouldn't hurt?

@TorbenGundtofte-Bruun Doesn't hurt to ask. He might be a little outside our typical demographic since his children are grown, though.

7:14 PM
Hrm... I'm a bit leary of just asking him. I'm sure a celebrity with as much "Internet cred" as Mr. Wheaton has gets bugged fairly often for endorsements. I'd be worried that random people asking him out of the blue might put him off.
Perhaps if we had a question that we thought he'd have a personal interest in (such as the "Can a Stepfather and Stepson relationship work" question), it might go over better than just asking him to mention our site.

Or if we could get someone from Stack Exchange (such as @TimPost) to arrange a more formal communication... Stack Exchange isn't without its own "Internet cred".
Incidentally....
@KarlBielefeldt and @balancedmama, congratulations again! As was shared with me when I was given my diamond, it has been the general practice on this site to discuss moderation issues as openly as possible (subject to the basic restrictions on confidentiality that we've all agreed to, of course).
Some sites, I believe, have private chat rooms for the moderators to discuss things. We don't, and generally discuss flags and site concerns openly here, in the interest of transparency.
If there's anything of a more sensitive nature that comes up, we can take it to TL.
Although if you would prefer a private chat room, I'm certainly open to the idea.

@Beofett I can talk to Sam Brand, who handles that sort of thing for us.
I also thought of that - he would be a fantastic evangelist for the site.

My availability isn't what is has been in the past, due to the end-of-the-year being a bit rough for me.
@TimPost That would be awesome :)

@Beofett As open as possible sounds good to me.

@KarlBielefeldt I don't want to come across as if I'm dictating how we do things, and I certainly don't want to discourage any suggestions you two might have for changes.

7:30 PM
@Beofett I volunteered because I like the way the site has been moderated so far. Trust me, I'm not shy about proposing improvements when I see the need.

@KarlBielefeldt I'm glad to hear that (on both counts!)

I haven't used chat very much in the past. Is there a good way to combine multiple rooms? Or do most people just leave multiple tabs open?

@KarlBielefeldt If you're in multiple rooms, you'll see the latest message from each room on the right, above the starred messages. However, if there's a lot of activity, it gets hard to keep track of what's going on in the other rooms.
The "other rooms you're in" section shows any pings you might have, too
I tend to bounce around from one room to another, depending on which rooms have active conversations, but sometimes I'll run multiple tabs if I'm actively involved in multiple discussions.

Will you still be "in" another room if it doesn't have a tab open? Does it ever time out if you don't specifically leave?

@KarlBielefeldt Nope. You remain in all the rooms unless you close chat completely (in which case you time out after a few minutes), or explicitly leave one of the rooms.
I have several chat rooms that I have marked as "favorites", and each time I log in, I open one chat window (it doesn't matter which site's chat room I join), and click "rejoin favorite rooms", and that's all I need to do.

@Beofett Thanks, very helpful.

@KarlBielefeldt He might be, but we do have a few questions about adolescents and teens now and again and I would love to see the site expand in that direction personally - there aren't as many sites out there for parents of older kids and it might help us stand out from the crowd a bit better. Maybe asking what it would take for him to give the stamp of approval and see what he says?
@Beofett Sounds like a GREAT idea.
@Beofett I don't know what TL stands for.
@Beofett Sorry the end of the year was rough - My availability is also somewhat diminished (but since I'm addicted - I'm still going to be around at least once/day) here's to a great 2014 for everyone.

@balancedmama Teacher's Lounge

@KarlBielefeldt I think youo already know I'm not shy either.

chat room for all diamond mods across the entire network

@cabbey OMG! DUH LOL!
Teacher's Lounge - ugh!! used to avoid those like the plague - teachers really just sit around and whine in those. I hope the TL here isn't the same.
@KarlBielefeldt I second that

@balancedmama I'd love to see more expansion that way as well, especially since I'll be a parent of teens/young adults before I know it. I'm just pointing out the current lack of activity in that area.

8:59 PM
That "not shy" was actually supposed to be for Beofett.
absolutely.
And it might be hard for him to be on board and have his following transfer over without more already here, but, not following his blog, I don't know how wide his audience really is or not.
Congrats btw. I was looking forward to working with you as soon as Tim Post said something about you in an email.

@balancedmama Likewise, should be fun.

Go Beofett! Lay down the law for the scrubs :-)
