2:15 AM
quiet night

mm

I got depressed talking to myself and decided to stop

always a bad feeling
I am hoping you have slept
since your cat bothered you

Yes. He always bothers me, so I've become immune

haha
I have a single cat that only pays attention to people once a month, my other cat is deeply bothered if he is not given attention every 3 hours
How is everyone enjoying Halloween?

2:36 AM
I vastly overestimated the amount of candy required, so I'm eating as much of the remainder as possible before taking the rest to work

Just a typical day on my end, heh.

I got way too many bags of candy
myself also
@MichaelMrozek, @rchern, I see you guys online every time I come into chats, and normally helping people. How do you find the time?

I wore my SO shirt while answering the door; I should probably get some sort of payment for all the free advertising

tru

@Kortuk My complete lack of a social life probably helps

Jin
2:48 AM
@MichaelMrozek social life is over-rated

@MichaelMrozek, @Jin, understood

how goes it @Jin

Jin
@rchern good you? been fixing css this weekend on SE sites.

yeah, saw your comment about the mod flag color on WA
mostly good. had a very relaxing weekend. after working like a dog up to my company's annual conference i deserved it though

Jin
learned this week that Opera's css3 transition is weird. had to disable it on some sites.
in related news, people use Opera.

3:01 AM
haha

OH: "I still maintain that Opera's market share is entirely made up of developers testing sites in Opera."

i'd be interested to see a browser breakdown for the network

I use opera on my phone, I have not used it on a computer in more than 8 years.

hahahaha at tweet

agreed

Jin
3:02 AM
same can be said about IE6

Damn, my site renders near-perfectly on IE 5.5. I've got to work harder.

Jin
to be fair I think Opera is a very good browser. I just don't think they've done a good job marketing themselves.

(I think I stole both of those from the MSO tavern)

The mobile version is a life saver. It is quite a bit faster at loading webpages. Yeah for finally having phones that bandwidth and not procession power limits the download.

Jin
i'm sad to hear about win7 phone's browser

3:07 AM
I use Opera on my iPhone. Damn good thing too. If I try to view my work's OWA in Safari it crashes every single damn time.
Worked fine for about a year and then every since then it crashes.

heh

I think this comment really is the only reason IE6 still exists
Terrible internal web apps that don't work on any other browser

aye
my company upgraded the firm to ie7 about a year and a half ago
of course, we're still stuck on xp
well, everyone but IT haha

eats pumpkin seeds

3:13 AM
@rchern We are too, except for the small cabal of us that secretly installed Linux

Jin
did IE6 ever fix the clipboard bug?
to me that's a real risk.

@MichaelMrozek, well we're a .net shop, so... (;
actually what I love is that PC support all have mac laptops. they don't support mac.

@Jin I don't know what it is. That sites can read from your clipboard?

but when I ask for a mac laptop so I can play around with iPhone apps and possibly build one for the company, nope, can't allow that.
grumbles

Jin
@MichaelMrozek yeah, without the browser prompting anything. they can just ajax whatever's in your clipboard and post to server.

3:15 AM
@rchern If you have text in the input field and do the Ctrl+Up way of selecting a post to reply to, it loses the existing text. I demand this be fixed at once

[status-norepro]

[status-bydesign]
But I'll also fix it. :P

Good, I'll ignore @rchern's lies then :)

o:
no. repro. !!

@TimStone It should also support replacing an existing ID, if possible (i.e. don't just prepend the ID to the input text)
@rchern Press right

3:19 AM
Ah.

@rchern I've fixed the fact that I forgot to give you rounded borders too, by the way. ;)

!

It's what I get for being too lazy to open Chrome.
@MichaelMrozek Yeah, that makes sense.

declares the default browser for the userscript to be Chrome <_<

:P

3:25 AM
Victory! Let's convert it to a Chrome extension
TAKE THAT FIREFOX

NO BUG FIX FOR YOU!

Good point. @rchern Wait until @TimStone has added as much as possible to the userscript, then cut him off

honestly I think building it out into an extension that lets you toggle the options would be a good thing.
But keeping it at the userscript simplicity definitely has value.

It would also make it easy to split out different features into different source files, and allows automatic updates. The lack of cross-browser support pretty much kills it though
Some sort of options interface would be nice though
Even just a web interface that writes to local storage

Hmm, that's not a bad idea.

3:28 AM
Aye, the compatibility and keeping things in sync wouldn't be fun at all

I'm the opposite of the SO devs; every time we disagree on anything I want an entry in an options dialog that lets the user choose between them

hehe yeah
Then maybe @YiJiang would be happy about the timestamps

Jin

Oh. No, totally missed it

I have!
My single comment is extremely valuable to the discussion.

3:29 AM
I don't actually use the homepage, so my opinions are limited

Jin
"If you are an avid user, we don't expect you to use the homepage." - Jeff Atwood

Oh. Mission successful then
I don't use individual tag pages either though, so fail :). I use the newest question list

I live on /questions sort=active or newest
sometimes on SO I'll limit to tags/newest if I searching for things to answer

I'm considering a greasemonkey script that adds a button to SO questions tagged with [php] that pre-fills the comment dialog with a comment explaining that the code is unsafe and anyone with 5 minutes on their hands could hack it without effort
It would be much faster than manually typing it in every time I see a php code snippet

LOL

3:50 AM
/edit by itself seems kinda useless, when Up Arrow does the same thing

well sure
but it was more like, /edit <id> is there, so why not make the arg optional

nod

Hah :P

doesn't work in chrome?
is it just the requiring-external-scripts thing?

It works in Chrome, rchern and I both use it

4:01 AM
/edit
what am I missing, then?

Shift+enter?

no just enter
did you refresh the page after installing it

Oh, I guess both work
It used to be shift+enter only, right? Or did I make that up

/me tests
yep, I did refresh the page

@MichaelMrozek for the first day or two, yeah.
@Sohum, did you install from stackflair.com or github?

4:03 AM
@Sohum You see the timestamps and message IDs on the right of each message?

@rchern stackflair
@MichaelMrozek nope.

It's not working then :)

clearly :)

Is the stackflair one old? As in pre-@include chat.stackexchange.com?

hmm, I guess I need to update it with tonight's changes anyway
maybe, yeah
@Sohum, uninstall what you've got and give me a sec

4:04 AM
Is there a reason to keep them separate? Just redirect the stackflair one to github

the manifest includes every url, for some reason, but the userscript has the @include chat.stackexchange.com/rooms* line
trying..
nothing.

errors in the console?

nothing relevant.
oh, duh
I had stackflair.com blocked

o:

4:10 AM
and yay timestamps!

Who doesn't, these days

celebrates

@MichaelMrozek pfffffft ):
@MichaelMrozek, you should circle your addition to the user popup in your question. I was about to tell you you're silly, the favicon is right there.

@rchern :). Fixed

Hahah

4:14 AM
also, I was probably going to use harsher words than silly...

4 mins ago, by Michael Mrozek
Who doesn't, these days
nice.

(:

/s andr
aww.
no short forms.

Just annoy @rchern until she adds them

@rchern! could you pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease add short forms like /s ?

4:21 AM
hmm, /s for /star? that wasn't an id you tried passing to it though.

/s for switch

ah

/sw andr
still no

hmm, that might be confusing
with the keyboard navigation, S stars.

what's your opinion on renaming that to Favourite?
/fav

4:22 AM
@rchern An acceptable solution might be to allow for custom mappings should we add some sort of configuration interface.

I would just have it accept any short form as long as it's unambiguous

@Sohum against. the chat UI calls it starring.

So /sw and /st work automatically, /s doesn't do anything
(inspired by cisco routers)
Oh. Well done whoever coded that then :)

also, /del just doesn't work

o:

4:24 AM
I'm suspicious...

@MichaelMrozek that's the standard behaviour
"Error processing del: Unable to delete message."

/blame @MichaelMrozek
why did you break /del?!?!

also, goddamn the ids are long

As you've pointed out multiple times, I haven't committed in ages :)

4:25 AM
Wasn't /del broken before?
Is it now re-broken?

yea, it doesn't unique-substring ids :P

are you able to see the message you just linked to?

nope.
I was hoping it would link to

whew (;

2 mins ago, by Michael Mrozek
I'm suspicious...
so I tried just /quote 843, in the hope that it would be clever

4:27 AM
nah, it uses the full id

yea :(

Good, every time I want to add something it turns out it already exists

such as?

Substring IDs, in this case

I'm not sure the command setup would easily allow mapping, custom or coded in
substring ids are not supported...

4:30 AM
As a bit of a sidebar, this isn't technically Chat Feedback anymore... :P

LOL

priority feature request: if a message starts with /, but the script doesn't understand it, then don't send it. Allow escaping, if necessary.

That's a good idea

The SE Tavern

I'll bet you all pretend drinking fruity drinks with foreign n...

Accept // to start with one slash, that's what irssi does

4:31 AM
Unless someone thinks we should create a room, meh.

103 messages moved from Chat feedback

@MichaelMrozek Yeah, I had mentioned the // thing before, I guess I can implement it.
@rchern I don't want to further provoke the wrath of the chat powers that be by polluting their feedback channel, is all I'm saying. ;)

chat feedback just got really empty hahaha

Hahahah

My screen lagged for a few seconds when it happened, I was a bit nervous that I'd broken the internet

4:33 AM
Should feature request that when the entire room's worth of messages gets moved out it should auto-load older messages ;)
...Then we should quickly add that to the userscript to say we fixed it first.

\o/
the other day Robert asked for a feature request and I wrote a userscript and gave it to him lol

In theory somebody should point out that we're in the wrong room before we're 103 messages in

I was caught up in the moment.

It's fine; I blame @rchern

The very lengthy, wordy moment.
Hmm, let's see what all I can shove in my (probably separate..) commit(s). :P

4:36 AM
I am immune to all blame
It bounces off of me onto @MichaelMrozek

/immunity

@TimStone hehehehe at separate commits

For the sake of feature set traceability, of course.

of course :P

5:15 AM
i like how the convo died once we moved in here

Heheh :P
makes changes to the README file
That's commit worthy, right? ;)

(:

9 hours later…
2:07 PM
Rovio!

haha not for you ;)

@Zypher could we have a Rovio chat room? with the feed from Rovio?

I imagine they don't want us pulling images from their office whenever we want. And it's probably docked right now, so it'd get boring pretty fast

btw: indeed not expensive!

@alexanderpas nah ... the problem is we don't want our internet slaughtered and i can just see a chat room full of people constantly trying to pull pics
@Michael yes docked and staring right at me ... gets creep sometimes

2:20 PM
@Zypher caching?
@Zypher Pics or it didn't happen!

@alexanderpas not really a good way to do it, they are getting the current photo via the rovio API
I mean would could probably jig something up, but then you start running into the more work than it's worth territory

I'm not going to be satisfied until there's a chat-driven way to make the robot follow @balpha around attempting to trip him

lol
well that would be REALLY hard since he isn't in the NY office

I have confidence in you all

@Zypher just ship the rovio.

2:24 PM
haha ... but they we wouldn't have one!

Buy 7?

2:39 PM
I test-drove a Rovio once. Was really disappointed at how slow it was.

catches up and thinks the Rovio mention is very random

It is, yes.

Also, y'all are being cheap.
video or it didn't happen.

@rchern blame @JeffAtwood for that

ah hehehehe
now it makes sense (:

2:44 PM
@rchern There was a link, it was just fairly hidden
36 mins ago, by Michael Mrozek

Why is this stuff always so hard to get in europe?

Ah yes, I did not notice your backwards smiley was a link.

I read your comment and looked 3 times rchern before I figured out what you meant

6 hours later…
8:34 PM
It took me about 10 minutes to remember that ajax requests won't work cross-site. Argh

):

I was trying to be helpful and write something for that math guy that would intercept $foo$ posts and convert them to mathbin images
I'm pretty sure it would've worked, except for the whole ajax posting to mathbin.net thing

git pull MSOTavern SOTavern

Ah, there is some life in here after all
if you count mods

Is there a reason not to?

8:43 PM
probably not
it's just funny that most of the highly active users here have blue names

This channel makes me get the StackExchange blues.

goes into stealth mode

</bad-pun-of-the-day>

@Jin You don't have to constantly remind us how good your designs are by contrast

8:46 PM
@Jin You [0][0][0][0][0][0][3] 11/1/2010

Jin
@CRoss haha didn't mean it that way.. i was just shocked

and guess who I blame?

Jin
@CRoss iccm-1.org is still my fav. but at least they're not a web design company...

@Jin WOW ... they should have saved on the flash and bought some more bibles

Jin
@CRoss it's so intense...

8:49 PM
They obviously didn't ask themselves "How would Jesus design this site?"

@Jin Yeah, it seems to come right off one of those bullet hell games.

Jin
@badp fyi Radiant Silvergun was my favorite shooter of ALL TIME

@Jin I guess you're telling me the life bar is cheating? :)

Jin
@badp I remember buying a dreamcast for $10 off ebay just for that game. the actual game cost me $100

Round 3 of the final saturn mode boss does look intense.

1 hour later…
10:17 PM
So... For some reason my IP has been banned from char.se it appears. That or something is broke.
I get a 'too many redirects' browser error in Safari and FF, and IE gets the SO 'to protect our users we can't accept more requests from this IP.

1 hour later…
11:31 PM
@rchern <insert meaningful message here>
@rchern I second this

that's what WA's notification sound was I think

Oh, really? Heh :P
Combined with the blood red notification highlight, I didn't know what was going on. ;)

Q: Can't access chat.se, multiple browsers deliver a 'too many redirects' browser error.

LessPop_MoreFizzCurrently I am unable to access http://chat.stackexchange.com via any link or by typing the URL. I get the following error in Safari on OS X: Too many redirects occurred trying to open “http://chat.stackexchange.com/”. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another pag...

Any ideas?

@LessPop_MoreFizz I've been hypothesizing, but haven't come up with anything that seems very likely. You've flushed the DNS on OS X and the caches of the respective browsers?
Oh
@LessPop_MoreFizz It's not just you :P
I instantly recreated the problem on another computer, interesting.

11:59 PM
@Tim I went so far as to download and install a totally new browser that had never been on the machine before.
