@ManishEarth: Congratulations on your 10k Manish... It's much boring anyway :P
@tpg2114 Nah..!!! Not at all... But, that's what @DImension do...
I think he expects absolute (or what say, unnecessary) perfectness :D

3:21 AM
@DavidZ @ChrisWhite: ^^^ Really? Poor people :)

3:58 AM
@tpg2114 no and no

@DavidZ That's what I assumed... I was irritated, mostly because I spent awhile looking through the post before I realized it was 2012 and not 2013

@tpg2114 The 2013 one was bumped to the main page. Then I happened to click on a link there, leading me to the 2012 one. Thinking it was still in the 2013 post, I had edited it : ( .

Even if it was the 2013 post, what purpose did the edit serve? It wasn't even visible until I looked at the revisions in markdown
It made absolutely no difference to anything

@Dimension10 that's pretty much a textbook example of a "too minor" edit. Whether it's a new post or an old post, there's no good reason to make that edit, ever.

@CrazyBuddy thanks :)

6:18 AM
@dmckee O_o

New physics. Or popular nonsense?
Ooh, Princeton. @Chris might know this guy
Hmm, non mainstream policy (unpublished work, new physics) prevents me from asking about it on main :p

@ManishEarth am glad I rejoined here - a lot friendlier and informative than some other sites

on one other site I rejoined, I asked a question and got a longwinded comment about the semantics of how the question was written, then a a big ol' meta post slamming the question again
why on earth would I want to stay at a site like that
don't need that nuisance

6:33 AM
@UV-D Don't look at it as a slamming. When a question comes along that proves the current policies ambiguous/outdated, meta discussion is the way to go :)

oh it was a slamming... calling me out in a comment on the question itself

and making a link to the meta post...instead of answering the question
either way...that site was just an 'interest' site
Physics is more than an interest for me
I am toying with uncommitting from astronomy

@UV-D well, yeah, that just tells others "if you're unsure about this post then please come to meta"
The SE system can become quite heavily meta oriented. But usually it stays fine.

not th way that member wrote - a full on essay in a comment labouring about how the question was bad
but really, why would I contribute to a site when instead of getting an answer, I get into discussions about the semantics of the question?
it boiled down to me not using Wikipedia... which I dn't, as I prefer peer reviewed articles
as for astronomy, as I am just an enthusiast... it probably best I do not join that one
geoscience is fine, as I am a qualified geologist and atmospheric physicist
BUT, the point is, I have not really had that level of nitpicking here
besides, this site is Physics!!
and Physics is awesome
@ManishEarth I also have some interest in atmospheric chemistry... would that be on topic at your other moderating-haunt?

6:47 AM
huh probably

hmmm sounds uncertain... all good

7:03 AM
actually, after thinking about it, I have decided to uncommit to astronomy (did not have a particularly friendly reception as an enthusiast on space.SE)

I'm subscribed to several of the "best questions" StackExchange emails, but I don't get them. At first I subscribed to the Math newsletter. It came for a view weeks. Then I added more newsletters and unsubscribed from the math one and now I don't get any. I click the confirmation emails, but nothing happens.

7:40 AM
@ManishEarth I know Nima. He has an office here which is only a couple doors down from mine. I'm also very familiar with this work, and it's potentially related to one of my future projects.
Just FYI Nima is one of the top researchers in theoretical high energy physics in the world, and the work itself is definitely top-tier stuff. I can't say much for the presentation there though.
In any case, this isn't new physics, it's a new description of known physics. He's also already given a half-dozen talks on it here and elsewhere and has preprints up for most of the groundwork (arxiv.org/abs/1212.5605), so I don't think it counts as non-mainstream. There are a significant number of people currently researching this stuff.

7:56 AM
@LoganM Nice!
Yeah, after some Googling and reading the beamer presentation made by Nima's partner that's what it looks like
@LoganM Yep. Fyi: The non mainstream policy also applies to "new physics" that isn't considered crackpot but isn't yet published either (i.e. a sensible theory of quantum gravity that isn't published)
But if it's a new way of looking at things, maybe we can have a question on that here.

@ManishEarth That seems like a slippery slope, but okay.

@LoganM Actually it avoids the slippery slope
Instead of the subjective "that theory looks sensible, we'll allow it"/"you're completely crazy, we're removing it" way of keeping crackpot off the site
We have the objective "Is it about physics that has been published in a reputable journal"
Here:

Q: Is non mainstream physics appropriate for this site?

Manishearth Under construction Note: This is not a new policy, just a meta post about the old one. It will be linked to in the new close reasons. Is non mainstream physics allowed here? What defines non mainstream physics? What sort of questions and answers are disallowed by this policy? What shou...

@ManishEarth What about work that is well known but never got published? There's a great deal of phenomenology like that where a theory is a natural thing to look at, but was already ruled out before people considered it. Any expert in the area would be able to answer questions about it, but it's not worth going in a journal because the theory is already ruled out.

@LoganM That falls under "accepted" then
> Mainstream physics is physics which has been accepted by a significant portion of the physics community. In the case of modern physics, if a theory has not been published in a reputable journal, it is not considered mainstream.
With new theories, "accepted" doesn't work as well
@LoganM However, I'm open to tweaking the NM policy if you have a suggestion. The main issue is that we have to keep it as objective as possible

In any case I know that policy, which sadly means I have a lot of trouble asking questions here. Most of the ideas I have are crazy insane ideas that could be ruled out by some technical considerations, but I'm not able to figure out why they're ruled out myself.
But I honestly wouldn't want to post those anywhere anyway since if they do happen to not be completely insane I'm potentially losing credit.

8:04 AM
FWIW, I'd heard Nima's name before and knew that this probably was good, legit physics. I was initially concerned that it was a premature popularization of the theory. Because such news websites have a tendency to overhype :/
@LoganM Well, note that talking about new ideas within the framework of accepted physics is OK. Which works well when you're asking about stuff that you want to find the flaw in

@ManishEarth I don't really know. It's a difficult question. The current policy is pretty limiting, but I can't think of a better one off the top of my head.

Hm
@LoganM Note that while SE has control over the post on SE (i.e. deletion/editing/etc), the content is still attributed to you.

@ManishEarth I'm not worried about credit here. If I post my idea here and someone else sees it, they could publish on it before me. This isn't unusual in my field, so you have to be careful who you tell what until you're ready to publish.

In any case, there's already a question on this amplituhedron stuff.

8:08 AM
I guess it has to do more with people taking your post as a base and developing, which you can't do anything about
@LoganM Ah. Thought one would come up :)

@ManishEarth I might write an answer to that, but it's 4 am here and I have to grade E&M homework by this morning. I'm going to get back to that but nice talking to you.

@LoganM Wake Nima up and ask him to write an answer ;-)
@LoganM Nice talking to you too :)

@DImension10AbhimanyuPS It all depends on the number of posts on that topic

Does anyone know what happens to "accepted paper" links in PRL once the paper's published?

@EmilioPisanty You wrote a review paper? Wow.

i.e. will the link prl.aps.org/accepted/bb071Y66N571aa3bf48b4cf3ba6450dae3dafccb0 still be valid once they publish it and assign it a valid DOI?

1:34 PM
Hmm

@ManishEarth I read it just now..!!! Amplitude-something o_O

@DImension10AbhimanyuPS : Generally speaking: Because (i) the total number of string theory questions is less than say Newtonian mechanics; (ii) the community has in the past merged M-theory and string theory, so it seems contra to that tradition to introduce subcategories of string theory; (iii) Consistent retagging of old questions to new conventions interrupts the front page; (iv) There can only be 5 tags per question so there is a natural limit to the number of subdivisions.

Hi! It's first time I can type sth here :D
how you doin :)

@2physics welcome :)

@ManishEarth Thank you
are you all scientists ?? I'm just a student!

I'm a student. An undergrad.

cool

@2physics Welcome to our chat :)

@DImension10AbhimanyuPS : The tags are currently made synonyms and not merged, which mean that we will be able to break those synonyms and distinguish e.g. 'type-i-string' and 'type-ii-string' tags (that you created so far) in the future, if the community sees the need.

@2physics Don't forget me... I'm an undergrad too :D

if people on stackexchange can correspond through email? or send messages together??

they do but it seems you know much more than what an undergrad student should know:D

yup thankyou:D . I'm new to all this

Q: Should we rename the homework tag as "problem-solving", or such?

DImension10 Abhimanyu PSIt seems that many users find the homework tag "Demeaning". c.f. here. There have been many other instances of this, which has also lead to various posts being locked. The users refute that "This is not homework!!!", often, too. I suggest that we rename it (for example, as probl...

@DImension10AbhimanyuPS Rather than make a long thread of comments, I just want to point out that reputation is a measure of how much the community respects a user and badges are supposed to be an incentive to encourage "good" behavior. See meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/97183/… and links therein

@tpg2114 done

So if a user wants to chase badges, more power to them. That's the entire purpose of them as outlined in those blog posts. Provided it's done constructively and actually represents the good behavior.
Merci. I don't mind stepping in to make similar statements, I know moderators get a bad rap and it helps sometimes that an outside-the-team person chimes in
:)

4:56 PM
@tpg2114 Yeah, that helps a lot, thanks for that :)

I was just about to blow up on that one though... figured I'd seek advice on how to not make an example of off-topic commenting

You're right though, it's a bit hard to tell someone else not to tell others what to do :p

There is some irony in that one

exactly
@tpg2114 The thread is off topic, and I'll remove it soon. Moderators sometimes leave off topic "don't do that" comments

I felt bad for starting the other off-topic one that got deleted.
On one of the other questions... don't remember which one now

4:59 PM
don't worry

Class time... woo :(

@tpg2114 teaching?
Midsems got over. I missed all of yesterday's classes and the classes this morning due to sleep :p Well, there were only two one hour classes yesterday (the other class and lab were cancelled)

5:57 PM
@ManishEarth Attending. I have two classes this semester, two next and then I'm done classes forever.

@tpg2114 ah, I see

Assuming I graduate sometime next year and they don't make me re-take classes from when I first entered to prove I still know it

Oh right, grad student. Not PhD :p

Working on PhD -- European PhD's don't typically need classes once they are working on the PhD, but in the US we still have to take about 60 hours of post-undergrad classes for a PhD
About 25 hours for a MS
