Bob
3:01 PM
@JourneymanGeek there. answered.

accepted ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek :D

I hope he/she didn't have a reason for doing that ;p
I do still think it was a bug ;p

Bob
might still want to ask something on MSO for them to fix their username display name validation :P

I was under the impression SE monitored the metas

Bob
3:09 PM
supposedly :P

@JourneymanGeek cough lol

Bob
@JourneymanGeek maybe you shouldn't accept my answer, then :P
I didn't really push for a fix

well you answered who he was, and what was happening
also
today's my 4th year on SU ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Happy birthday!
Hm. Apparently that character isn't on Unicode's list of whitespace characters. Damn.

@JourneymanGeek Happy joinage!

3:20 PM
o0

@Bob massage, not message

Bob
Oh.

I read message first as well :D

Bob
Nothing to see here, move along :P

depends on who the message is from then ;p

Bob
3:24 PM
@JourneymanGeek now you're just adding to the confusion :P

what in the heck did I walk in to.
/me runs away

I am not creator of this meme otherwise I would be embarrassed.

Bob
@somequixotic not sure :P

@Boris_yo: you should be, anyway.

Bob
3:28 PM
@Boris_yo HAVE YOU NO SHAME?!
oh, and good morning @somequixotic

hello :D I read your pings about the Australian federal policy

@Bob I have shame.

that stuff... I love it when non-techies try to dictate technical policy

Bob
lol
@somequixotic except when it fucks you over
Lumia 520 made it 9 days 20 hours on one charge, on standby
probably could have made the full 10 days if I didn't use it now and then to check progress and the time

Hours? Days? What is it?

Bob
3:35 PM
@OliverSalzburg days*

@Bob How's picture's quality on Lumia 520?

Bob
@Boris_yo Picture?
It's an IPS screen.

That is pretty crazy long

Bob
Decent resolution.
@OliverSalzburg wifi was enabled, too
and it was on 3G, not 2G (which uses less power)

3:36 PM
@Bob I meant of pictures that it's camera makes.

Bob
Eh. It's the lowest-end Lumia.
Don't expect miracles.
That said, it's a decent camera.
No flash, and lowish resolution (5MP). But the software and processing is good.
Remember that point and shoot digital cameras half a decade ago came with that kind of resolution. It's not necessarily bad.

@Bob Still okay to make close up shots of technical parts like motherboard, RAM modules?

Bob
@Boris_yo Sure, as long as it focuses okay. Wait, lemme try.

@Bob Will you upload focused picture here?

Bob
@Boris_yo I don't really have much to photograph on me right now
oh, wait. got a wifi card somewhere

3:45 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Avatar change again? ;( It kinda gets on nerves...

Bob

@Bob Nice contrast but desk looks grainy. Is it natural or photo effect?

Bob
@Boris_yo it's some cheap wood-mimicking effect of the desk

@JourneymanGeek Question is whether we should really allow such a name

Bob
@somequixotic do you do any blogging?
@slhck I don't see why we should. It's effectively whitespace in this context.

3:54 PM
@Bob Yeah, I've been trying different browsers etc, so this user is de facto un-pingable

Bob
@slhck well, as I said in the answer, the character is supposed to be invisible
A browser that actually renders something would be weird and wrong
unless you mean you're typing the unicode characters by code or similar
in which case... I haven't a clue! :P

@Bob You took picture with warm light in your room? Noise seem to be very little. I think this is what Lumias boast.

Bob
@Boris_yo it's right under a desk lamp
it's a decent camera for a cheap phone

@Bob It renders for me on the user list, actually.

Bob
they only really adverrtise good cameras on the higher-end phones
@slhck really? o.o
what does it render as?
and which browser?

3:56 PM
Chrome, OS X
But not on the profile.

@Bob why? are you interested in blogging?

Bob
@KronoS yea
currently trying to think of a domain name
@slhck I see nothing in FF/Chrome/IE (most recent stable builds)
might be specific to OS X
still, it's weird and probably technically incorrect

@Bob how about blog.superuser.com?

I forgot to check OS2 ;p

come blog for us!

4:00 PM
lol

Bob
@KronoS I was thinking more of a personal blog, tbh
@JourneymanGeek suggested documenting some of the stuff I do and forget about :P

@KronoS: kinda like how I occationally do blog.su stuff, but still maintain my own site ;p

Bob
I don't think I have enough experience with blogging in general, nor the will to write long, detailed answers at the moment
also, lack of anything to write about :P

@JourneymanGeek Oh I know... I'm just trying to recruit as many as I can ;)

Bob
4:02 PM
but I'll keep it in mind for the future

@Bob that can easily be remedied. We have lots of ideas, just very few writers.

Bob
@KronoS and the plot thickens...
@KronoS oh sure, throw a few of the ideas my way? :P
no guarantees, though...

plus there's the Question of the Month posts that we need to do as well

@KronoS graphics driver rendering error?

15
Q: Calling all bloggers!

KronoSDo you have any of the following qualities? A love for writing long and details answers to common Super User problems A desire to test, document, and share with fellow Super Users awesome products (sometimes for FREE!) An interest in the weird, funny, or just plain cool technological subjects o...

Bob
4:04 PM
@somequixotic no, that's an actual character
3
Q: Who is this mysterious user?

Journeyman GeekI noticed this on the front page which leads me to this answer and.. a mysterious empty profile It seems rather odd to be able to create a blank, difficult to find account - this guy or gal seems to be a user in good standing, but... It seems to be kind of wierd nonetheless, what's happ...

@Bob wuit?!!?

Bob
it doesn't render on most browsers
it's supposed to be invisible
not sure why it's rendering on @slhck and @KronoS's machines
that's also the character Notepad++ displays O.o

if that's not a rendering error, I need to stop being a computer scientist. that's FUBAR.

Bob
@KronoS could you add that screenshot as either a comment or answer?

4:05 PM
its not rendering for me

Bob
I find it curious that it's the same as the Notepad++ one...

@Bob it doesn't in the browser, but on the tabs it does

I'll probably take a look on the herd tommorrow, I have an OS X vm with chrome

Bob
@somequixotic well, it's a rendering error in that the character should not be visible in the first place
@KronoS that's more than what happens here

@Bob how about an edit to your answer?

Bob
4:06 PM
currently considering domain names: nocturnaldev.net, midnightdev.net, nocturnaldeveloper.com, midnightdeveloper.com
yes, I am very unimaginative.

nocturnalbob.com

@Bob very interesting "Lauri Ranta" website lri.me has some... curious files on it O_O

Bob
@KronoS if you want to edit it... but it's really your stuff so I dunno

Bob
@jokerdino I'm amazed that's not taken

4:07 PM
what the heck does that... I don't even...
audioscrobbler? the stackexchange API? applescript? ALL IN ONE?!?!?!

@Bob Most Bobs go to bed early. Maybe that's why.

lol
might be a cheatsheet

Bob
Most. Unreadable. Cheatsheet.
Ever.

@Bob you think that's a cheatsheet? I thought it was an actual script doing something in particular, and was like, whoa

4:09 PM
cheatsheat equivilent of that messy desk where only you know where stuff is ;p

Bob
hm. anyone think one of those domains would be better than another? or other suggestions?
I really don't know.

@Bob I don't know, either :( I don't have much in the way of aesthetic opinions about names

Bob
@somequixotic Exactly my problem :P
Well, I just think they all suck.

I don't like the ones ending with dev
;p

Bob
4:11 PM
@JourneymanGeek hm?

Bob
well, the longer ones are a bit of a mouthful
or typeful, as the case may be

@Bob @somequixotic @JourneymanGeek if you click and drag from where the name should be, something is also rendered
Oh hey, chat renders something too

o0
I don't see it

Bob
uhh.. nope and nope

4:12 PM
well I do
apparently IE 10 is more capable than your browsers

Bob
this is seriously weird

Bob
@KronoS nah, we've tried IE10 too

ie 10 on windows 8 didn't render it

Bob
it's your machine that's weird

4:12 PM
Or more broken
IE 10 on Win 7

Bob
I'd also not consider it more capable, since this is incorrect behaviour :P
Hm. Anyone else on Win7 who can test this?

not bad

ahh
it DOES render it in tabs in ie10 windows 7 for me

@JourneymanGeek look at this chat within that browser as well... also try clicking and dragging where the user's name should be

4:14 PM
o0
it renders it in here
i'll try windows 8 tommorrow

I think we're forgetting something, guys. we need to test this on Epiphany on Gnome 1.0 on Red Hat 1.0 (pre-RHEL)

I got Epiphany 3.8 (and it still sucks)

FOR GREAT SCIENCE

@somequixotic No. JMG would boot into OS/2.

@jokerdino say, doesn't it use WebKitGtk now?

Bob
4:16 PM
guess: something to do with drawing APIs

Bob
which would also explain why Notepad++ renders it

@somequixotic i think yes

@somequixotic: will do it in OS/2 in the morning

Bob
FF/Chrome/IE10 probably use some hardware accel/DirectX drawing API

4:16 PM
ooh

ClearType
and Direct2D

kinda like how I had wierdness with tamil fonts

Bob
Notepad on Win8 just renders empty space... there goes that idea...

Ya know... @Bob this is a perfect topic to cover over at the super user blog... just saying ;) (I promise to stop solicitations.... for a little while now)

speaking of which, I still need to write my regex blog post

Bob
4:18 PM
and it gets even weirder: Notepad on Win8, the blank space between the > and < cannot be selected independently
it always catches one of the angled brackets in the selection

Bob
actually, always the first one (>)

let's just say Unicode Breaks Shit and leave it at that, OK?

@KronoS: eh, looking at speakers or soundcards, might end up integrating that with the giant epic sound-post I'd been working on before ;p
;p

Bob
@KronoS do you happen to have a list of ideas somewhere? :D

4:20 PM
trello ;p

@Bob Yep! It's on the trello site

Bob
MS Word renders it! :O
@KronoS link?
LINQPad does not

@Bob in which font? it's probably the font and not the rendering API

Bob
VS2012 does not
@KronoS Private?
@somequixotic Times New Roman

4:24 PM
@Bob Shoot me an email so I can add you

Bob
It's in TNR but not Calibri!

superuser [dot] kronos [at] gmail [dot] com

@Bob Aha!
try Arial Unicode MS -- a reference font that has all unicode chars

Bob
@somequixotic "all"
@KronoS sure

@Bob up to a certain version of the unicode standard >_>

Bob
4:27 PM
@somequixotic IIRC there's more than can fit in a single TTF
For the record, all Arial fonts have it.
Courier New does and Consolas doesn't, so that explains Notepad/Notepad++
thanks @KronoS

@Bob @somequixotic done

Bob
glances at ideas well isn't this daunting

regex is mine; keep your opportunistic fox paws off of it

@Bob @somequixotic There's also this dedicated chat room:

 Super User Blog Editor Room

Where the editors drink coffee and try to get things done!

Bob
4:33 PM
@somequixotic lol

umm... wow... I sense a censorship in the Force
I went to theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/sep/05/… and after briefly loading the page, some dynamic JS blanked out the entire page o_O

Bob
@somequixotic ...try loading it outside your work network?
or just read the source! :P

@Bob will probably end up doing that, but I have actual work to get done :/

4:51 PM
@Psycogeek Hallo!

Bob
Experiencing some schadenfreude with this :P

Q: Moving 2TB (10 mil files + dirs), what's my bottleneck?

TimBackground I ran out of space on /home/data and need to transfer /home/data/repo to /home/data2. /home/data/repo contains 1M dirs, each of which contain 11 dirs and 10 files. It totals 2TB. /home/data is on ext3 with dir_index enabled. /home/data2 is on ext4. Running CentOS 6.4. Attempt 1:...

@Bob such a beautiful word

is it just me, or does playing certain songs on your playlist almost guarantee that someone will interrupt you either by phone or in person and want to talk to you?
some songs are OK and people leave me alone, but if I play other songs, it, like, sends out a hypersonic signal that peoples' brains subconsciously intercept that makes them want to come bother me

Bob
> Beats Music, an upcoming streaming music service by the company behind Beats by Dre headphones
NO
That shit would probably nuke every other music player on installation, and then the OS on uninstallation.

@Bob lol. the sad thing is that I actually don't terribly mind my Beats Wireless ("by Dr. Dre") headphones
they make bad software, but I don't mind their hardware

Bob
5:03 PM
@somequixotic It's quite commonly described as overpriced, bass-heavy, generic crap.

unless they deliver a firmware update to my headphones via bluetooth without my approval that causes them to seek out other bluetooth devices and install Beats (the DSP program) on them

Bob
Personally, after experiencing their software, I wouldn't touch anything by that company with a ten foot pole.

@Bob overpriced? check. bass-heavy? to an extent, but it can easily be mitigated with an equalizer, or alternatively, it actually sounds good with certain music. generic? don't know what that means but they don't seem terribly generic

Bob
@somequixotic Well, by 'generic' I mean it doesn't really stand out as 'very good' like other brands. To audiophiles, anyway.

I can agree to that...

Bob
5:04 PM
Personally, using my $1.15 chinese earbuds...
now i'm considering Spotify

I still like my Sennheiser studio monitoring headphones better, except that I have only one pair, and taking them back and forth to work is weird (and annoying), so I don't do that... and also, Sennheiser's bluetooth headsets are even more expensive than that Beats pair

Bob
looks like they've finally introduced free in Aus

@Bob Spotify is great. I'm glad you can get it!

Bob
They've had the paid one here for a while. Last I checked (a year ago), the free one was severely restricted

@Bob My tablet came with earbuds of same brand and they suck. Sound mono, disrupted and quiet.

5:06 PM
I'm wearing my Sennheisers right now. still the best audiophile headphones I've ever listened to

Bob
@Boris_yo The bundled ones are always crap

@somequixotic I have Skullcandy and they are good especially with bass.

Bob
cheap does not automatically mean utterly shitty, though
yes, I'm using not-so-great $1.15 ones
they're still many times better than most $2 ones I've tried

@Bob And your Chinese for 1.15$ were sold separately?

expensive usually means at least not utterly shitty, although how much better they are than shitty, varies widely

Bob
5:08 PM
@Boris_yo bought off eBay at some point
I was lucky enough to find decentish very cheap ones
I wouldn't carry good ones in my pocket
they get damaged too easily
got a somewhat decent headset at home
> Users of the free Spotify service are still restricted to 10 hours of listening per month, however. The US, Australia and New Zealand are the only countries with no time limits or caps on track plays.
o.o

the only audio system that annoys me these days is the bluetooth audio in my car. it receives the signal well enough, but the acoustics of the stereo somehow leave out large parts of the mid to trebel range, making it hard to hear instruments such as background bass guitar, low piano notes, low viola notes, etc
partly the fault of road noise though. it's a Civic...

Bob
Hey, I just realised. Now chat quotes affect multiple lines
previously they didn't work if you had multiple lines

> a
b
nice! :D

Bob
methinks someone slipped in a | RegexOptions.Multiline while they weren't looking

> test
fake lazy > test

5:11 PM
`multiline
backquotes`

Bob
Or not :P

`can you recognize this`
> and this in one line?

Bob
.. D:

*lazy*
test

`how about this`
`and this`?

Bob
5:12 PM
ok. so specific to blockquotes
> > > > > >

maybe it was like that all along D:

> > > > > yo dawg, something about quotes

Bob
@jokerdino I'm pretty sure I (or someone else) tried something like this the other day
> line 1

> line 2
And then @OliverSalzburg tried the opposite today (or yesterday?)
i.e. tried to quote the first line but not the rest.
At least, I thknk it was Oliver.

@Bob @Bob I'm feeling generous and you are a good guy, so give me your email address before I change my mind; I'll send you a Spotify gift card for a month of premium
consider it a donation for working on SO-ChatBot :P or something

Bob
o.o
@somequixotic do you have Spotify Free available over in the US?

5:15 PM
@Bob Spotify Free and Premium are both available here, but I subscribe to use all the features and stuff

Bob
@somequixotic Ah, thanks for the offer, but no thanks :P

Did I tell you I actually used up my Spotify Abroad limit or something?

the major difference is that Free (I think) has advertisements and you are forced to listen to radio streams of predetermined songs

Now it requires me to use US IP or something.

Premium lets you pick your songs

5:16 PM

Bob
@somequixotic So does Unlimited, incidentally

@Boris_yo Good morning, oh my! is it morning. I am going to assemble another computer today. Sombody time me. How long will it take before 1) I screw up a part of the assembly 2) how long will it take before i Must MOD something 3) how many extra trips to the store it takes. Place your bets.

Bob
@Boris_yo no clue

@Bob oh, yeah, I forgot about that.. there's Free, Unlimited, and Premium... three actual account levels

Bob
also, they're offering a 30 day free trial of spotify premium on the site
lol

5:17 PM
I'm subscribed to Premium, naturally

Bob
I forgot I already had an account... created via VPN

@Psycogeek That's personal home computer?

@Boris_yo yes, hopefully it will replace this one, after enough $$$

@Psycogeek What do you mean by Mod? Modify? Why would you modify when all is fine and dandy?

@Boris_yo because assembly lines are not designed for perfection, just assembly.
I cannot believe how small a SSD is, why dont they just make it a Flash stick and stuff it in the USB3 :-)

Bob
5:22 PM
@Psycogeek they do sometimes
though usually esata

@Bob there is nothing in there either. i had to check to see if the package was empty :-)
Weight

@Psycogeek USB3 has a much higher protocol overhead than (e)SATA/SAS/PCI-E, and a lower maximum transfer rate, so you get higher latencies, worse seek times, less throughput, etc. -- which is why only actual Flash drives, which are painfully slow, are USB, and true SSDs are generally not
unless you interface an (e/m)SATA drive with a SATA<->USB controller that executes SATA commands on the SSD and marshalls the data blocks to/from the host over USB Mass Storage
which is still pretty slow...

Bob
Hm
the only reason for me to get Spotify Premium is for mobile
but that would drain the battery far too quickly

@Bob with the screen off, it really doesn't; especially if you have the songs cached or downloaded already
Premium lets you download the songs in an encrypted format that only Spotify can play -- that's the downside -- but the upside is you save on bandwidth and battery
are you having second thoughts about taking me up on that gift card yet? :P

Bob
@somequixotic well, I mean combined with everything else
as it is I'm lucky to last a day
@somequixotic I really do appreciate the offer.
@somequixotic Hm. Currently Nokia Music is serving that role.

5:32 PM
@somequixotic does USB3 still take (some) CPU usage on the windows system when it is doing stuff?

Bob
It's decent. But no choice :(
@Psycogeek everything does, to an extent.
chances are you won't notice it on a modern system

the overhead of a packetized general purpose protocol like USB3 is going to be higher on the host CPU than something specialized like SATA, especially for high throughput
it's not like "omg, USB3 is using 50% CPU!" but it's non-zero

@somequixotic For some reason , cpu use during USB transfers, has always seemed much higher than the same basic thing with internal sata.

Bob
O.O
what the...
dodgy spotify ads
ad for local university

@Bob lol

Bob
5:35 PM
I am... uncomfortable.

welcome to IP Geo

Bob
-_-

Premium == no ads, too

Bob
well

JUST SAYIN

Bob
5:36 PM
not so much the location
more that I'm currently a uni student
that's just slightly creepy

that's funny -- the funny part is that they identify you as belonging to group X, so they try to sell you something from group X
hello, Spotify, current university students are not looking for a new university

Bob
lol

kinda like Verizon's advertising logic: "This user is running FiOS! Let's advertise to them to buy FiOS!"

Bob
some are! :P

also, Amazon's product recommendations are retarded. if I spend 30 seconds looking at some random USB car charger, next time I log into Amazon, I get inundated with ads and recommendations for car charging accessories
I'm not a person who obsessively buys extra accessories just because they're there and I have the money. come on, Amazon, stop being so robotic about your offerings

5:39 PM
@somequixotic That is like buying One Vaccume, then suddenly getting adds for every vaccume. Like how many vaccumes could one person buy. "Our marketing Bot, has noticed you buy vaccumes, do you Collect them ?" :-)

@Psycogeek exactly lol
You recently bought a car! Let's give you nothing but ads about new cars!

@somequixotic Same thing happens on TV adds. Lifetime channel (directed to women) Like how many tampons could one person use in a day.

@Psycogeek as many as the company tells you to, plus one for profit?

Its like watching the cooking channel and getting adds for delivery pizza on it :-)

Bob
damn it youtube
if you're gonna delete a video in my favourites, at least tell me the damn name

5:49 PM
Off to a good start, it is going to take a while to figure out HOW to install the CPU with the cover ON still.

Bob
why are people going on about how a cable is crossover or not in a question in 2010?
@Psycogeek presumably they don't want you to touch the CPU

(i should have IDed it) it is the cover over the socket.

@Bob old routers, etc may not have autoneg

Bob
@somequixotic but modern computers do
so you'd need to be connecting an old router with an old computer
at which point I'd have to ask "really?"
I'm being inundated with both visual and audio ads for UTS from Spotify -_-
