7:00 PM
Even more creepy

That is a soft drink mascot aimed at kids and broadcasted on TV. I swear.

Gee, the poor children.
But then again, I don't think Ronald McDonald is any better.

But I get the impression people in the US actually take Ronald McDonald as a seriously valid commercial entity
But this "Dollynho" is taken seriously only by its creators, anyone else just laughs.

I can imagine, haha
Wow, that was one of the worst commercials I've ever seen

@slhck I assumed you googled for it.

7:16 PM
@OnurTurhan Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help.

@ThatBrazilianGuy That one, yeah

The north-americans "fat mustached guy yelling unstoppably" is kinda weird to me as well

@slhck He is a fictional pawn character to cover those who want to make America's citizens fat.
@ThatBrazilianGuy Why such avatar? What have you done with Ruda Amelda?!

@slhck superuser.com/questions/637302/… . Why did you delete my comment? What is wrong !!!

@Boris_yo Once again, I blame Obama, The NSA and Apple. But now in the reverse order.
@Boris_yo He's in a better place. He's one of us now.

7:19 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy So he was Mosad's agent finally?

@OnurTurhan you posted an answer once, then Sathya deleted it, then you posted the exact same answer again, and slhck deleted it. Don't you get the message? It's not a quality answer.
Your answer is completely contained within other, better answers. Furthermore, because this is a popular question, a merely acceptable or okayish answer to an ordinary question won't fly.
> We're looking for long answers that provide some explanation and context. Don't just give a one-line answer; explain why your answer is right, ideally with citations. Answers that don't include explanations may be removed.
That's from the advisory text on the question itself.

What @somequixotic said.
Our standards for very popular questions are somewhat higher, and what you posted was basically mentioned in all the other posts already.

If the question is an unpopular one with few or no answers, and few views, it's usually OK to post an answer that isn't extremely well-reasoned or justified, especially if it's difficult to be 100% certain about the answer due to the nature of the question. But this particular question is very answerable with a lot of explanatory information, and other people have already done that more than adequately.

What you cannot see is that there are several other answers that were removed, so please don't think that your post was the only one deleted.

Ok... If you rread all answers are same and no one mention about "RAM is not as dense as SSD" and everybody misdirected to cheapness of the RAM.

7:25 PM
@OnurTurhan If you specifically feel that there needs to be a point about the fact that RAM is not as dense as an SSD, you can make that point in a comment, not an answer; or, better, you can edit one of the existing good answers and attempt to fit that information in, and explain why that fact helps explain why we don't simply run everything from RAM.

Whatever you like? I got my answer. Thank you.

It's not a personal thing, @OnurTurhan. We just require a little more in-depth explanations in answers with questions like these. I hope you understand.

@CanadianLuke lol

Thank you again, no problem...

7:31 PM
Great avatar btw

Platypuses are awesome.
Platypi? Platypodes? idk

But it's not even Latin :P

@slhck neither is slhck, but if there were two of you, I'd call them slhcki

hey @somequixotic how would I use regex to find a .ini file extension?
like what syntax

7:45 PM
Huh, wouldn't \.ini work?

well... maybe if I actually read up on the documentation: regular-expressions.info
I'd would've seen this: .*\.ini$
@slhck I don't know regex at all

I see :)
Can be confusing to learn

@KronoS er, using what? find?

@KronoS .*\.ini and \.ini are basically the same thing
I always prefer to use the smallest possible expression that matches what I need

@OliverSalzburg Unless you want to match the whole filename instead of just the extension

7:53 PM
@OliverSalzburg if he also wants to match the filename, \.ini won't match the full file name, just any files that end in .ini... for example in a text file listing file names

Depending on what you match against, you might also capture a lot of garbage you two smartasses!

unless he's using a command line tool to simply identify files that end in a certain glob pattern, which isn't real regex anyway

haha

find /dir -name \*.ini works on Linux/Mac/Solaris/BSD/Cygwin/MSYS

7:54 PM
Also I usually think in matches as true/false

Although it's not a regex, per se.
I know, being a smartass… :P
It took me quite some time to differentiate between shell globs/wildcards and actual regexp

A: Is there any way to horizontally flip my monitor?

Franhttp://www.minaware.com/ there you have Deskmirror inside that pack DeskMirror mirrors (reflects/reverses) half of your display onto the other half. You can play with its options to fit your needs (I didnt try 2 monitors enabled, just installed and it works)

Does that software package look fishy?
I cannot find anything about any of these tools

I read the chapter "What are regular expressions" in the O'Reilly book "Mastering Regular Expressions" and now I know, it means something completely different to anyone
@slhck Seems weird

If anyone starts talking about context-free grammars, I'll ban them from this room.
@OliverSalzburg Weird enough to dl into a VM and test it? :P

@slhck The logo says "I'm a 12 year old prodigy programmer. Now download my software"
...it doesn't actually say that in case you're searching

@slhck certain regex engines have the same language expressiveness / Chomsky hierarchy classification as CFGs because of lookahead/lookbehind and so forth
@OliverSalzburg it'd be funny if the alt text said it thought :D

8:06 PM
I know. Don't remind me, please :P

@99572-is-fine 650!

](?:(?:\r\n)?[ \t])*)(?:\.(?:(?:\r\n)?[ \t])*(?:[^()<>@,;:\\".\[\] \000-\031]+
I'm pretty sure that's non-regular
but I should try and prove it :D

@somequixotic It needs comments

@OliverSalzburg it supports comments. in email addresses O_O

wat
I meant the (?#comment) kind
Which are the most useless of comments I know

8:09 PM
@OliverSalzburg well, yes; but the whole reason why that regex is so godawful is that it supports comments in email addresses

They are more useless than Youtube comments
@somequixotic Yeah, I've never heard of those

it's supposed to be valid according to the RFC. I wonder how many vulnerabilities exist based on that fact

Does anything other than that regex support them? :D

@OliverSalzburg only one way to know for sure; try something like oliver.salzburg(loser)@gmail.com

Haha

8:12 PM
boy, I'm really asking for it today... called one mod a loser, and contravened a direct order not to talk about CFGs by another
next I should post a software-rec on the main site

@somequixotic Worked like a charm

@OliverSalzburg nice :D
see, gmail agrees with me

@somequixotic Yeah, I'm already booting up my network of sockpuppets to downvote your posts when you're asleep!
2

@OliverSalzburg haha :D
so that's what your SE chat chrome extension is really for

@somequixotic Though I would assume, given that it's a comment, it didn't even make it past my SMTP server

8:14 PM
everyone who installed it becomes part of your botnet

Or should it be transmitted to the receiver? Because it wasn't

@OliverSalzburg unknown (whether it should be transmitted to the receiver or not).
did you get that whole message? or did you just see unknown? :P

Maybe it was even already lost much sooner. It doesn't come up in my Postfix log
The message arrived just fine

it's probably some kind of comment for the sender to keep notes only, otherwise things like g.w.harrison(idiot boss)@some.org would be interpreted very badly by the recipient
I'm surprised things actually support it and don't either (a) interpret it as an invalid email address, or (b) attempt to send to an account with the literal name specified, including the parentheses

1 hour later…
9:20 PM
I was about to post a question, then remembered beta software is off topic...
According to Microsoft, I need to enter in a different product key to activate Windows 8.1. I type it in, and it just says "That key can't be used to activate this edition of Windows. Please try a different key."
Has anyone with the preview run into this?

just chew7 it. ;3

sorry, I haven't tried the preview. I currently only have two computers with Windows installed on them and I need both of them as "production" (stable) boxes.... I gave away my spare systems to family because they were actually pretty good spec
that was my chance to try Win 8.1 preview, had I kept one of them
Additional information on key bindings. The statement "it disappears when you press (keys)" does not convey the difference between each key's effect, though all of them make the dialog disappear.

that's audit-speak! :D

Accept it!

@CanadianLuke nuuuuu lol
the audits are bad at concealing the fact that they're audits
read the comment. rofl.

Weird how many audits you're getting... Send that to @slhck for his blog

9:31 PM
you just pinged him, so I'll take no further action

@CanadianLuke Might be better for @Sathyas blog

Crap... Too many names starting with an S...

@OliverSalzburg I thought for a second "hey, isn't gemsfromstackexchange actually Sathya's?" but the thought passed by me because I felt secure in my swaddling that a blue diamond moderator would never be wrong. ♦

@OliverSalzburg I WANTED ORRRANGE!! It gave me lemon-lime.

> Hermann is apparently paranoid; an overheard conversation between Gunther and Anna Navarre reveals that his large fingers may also hinder his ability to operate soda machines, although he insists that the "maintenance man" switched the cans of orange soda in the machine with lemon-lime, as "he knows I like orange."

@OliverSalzburg you never played Deus Ex?!?!?!?! this is like if a fully grown cat would say, "I've never eaten protein" ... then how do you exist!?!?

I'm not even sure if I pirated it
But, if I did, I probably didn't like it

you're dead to me.

I'm not even sure what I did back then
I was probably busy learning to code in VB6

We do, under the covers, to the extent that a given OS supports it. Windows uses "unused" RAM for "disk cache", and I assume that many versions of Linux do too. But there is far too much disk to ever fit it all into RAM. — Daniel R Hicks 2 days ago
If we use unused RAM for disk cache, and we use disk for RAM cache, then we in fact dont use neither disk nor RAM?!
@somequixotic Here, another person on the same chatroom who never played it.
Two inexistent persons on the same day. Are you skipping those meds again?

Wut.

A: Installing an additional fan in an HP Slimline s3120n

mabellineI have an HP slimline desktop, after 5 years of steady hard use the fan is running loud and all the time. i simply put ice cubes in a plastic bag, or plastic container, put a towel under it and set it on top of the tower. works for me. i know it will have to be replaced, but having done it before...

> i simply put ice cubes in a plastic bag, or plastic container, put a towel under it and set it on top of the tower.

Bob
@nhinkle What?!
You want at least dry ice. Liquid nitrogen is preferred.
Everyone knows that.

@Bob Where do you get dry ice? From special ice machine?

Bob
11:13 PM
@Boris_yo Nah, it's shipped from Neptune.

@Bob In a special ice machine, yes?

Bob
No, in an insulated shipping container.

Why is bob special now?

Bob
@nhinkle Weird things happened last night.
I think some of the messages were starred.

What sort of weird things?

Bob
11:18 PM
@nhinkle Somehow followed from this message. Tbh, I'm not entirely sure why :P

I think I got the gist of it.
Also to everyone asking about elections: no election is currently planned. It's not an inherently annual thing, it's a when-we-need-extra-help thing. Just so nobody's, like, freaking out about how we had one last year this time and haven't yet this year.

@Spiff Hey there! You're pretty special, aren't you? :)

Howdy. Every time I thought I was special, my older brother would remind me that "'Jerry's Kids' are special too." ;)
My rep is currently 24,001 and it almost makes me want to go looking for an Answer to downvote.

lol
I know the feeling ;p
@nhinkle: hehe. Ribbing me about standing for the next election seems to be a running joke. I don't (and I certainly hope no one's) freaking out over it.
