8:03 PM
@MadaraUchiha We're bringing the web into the 21st century! It's far more user friendly now, as all the hyperlinks are distinctly colored dark plum on a deep teal background with "<-Click here now" alerting the user that a click will cause something to happen. Previously visited and unvisited links are colored differently so that people will be able to tell pages they've already been to. Now anyone can browse the web without fear of missing clickable content.

I loled. Hard.
@LoganM Nice, but I'd leave it to the Stack Exchange designers :D

The links got to go, right?
@Krazer I thought I recognized that face from somewhere

8:19 PM
@JNat Yes, I've rollbacked to your edition and left a comment.
Perhaps he thought the links were removed by accident.

@MadaraUchiha Yeah, I guess

\o/ Benefit of the doubt! \o/

@MadaraUchiha lol

Personally, I think we should have one CW post that includes all questions of this type, and then just close all the other ones as duplicates.
I don't think it's necessary to remove links unless it's clear that the main purpose of the site is for piracy, not for indexing.

@LoganM I don't mind a useful, well written canonical.
But do remember that there are (plenty of) sites that index without providing illegal streams/downloads

8:29 PM
@LoganM So you mean that since they don't link directly to the torrent file, but rather to, say, nyaa, we should leave the links?

I'll try to write a CW Q&A post about what the various databases are that index anime, manga, etc. I agree that there are plenty of options that don't provide downloads.

@LoganM Alright, give it a shot

but I want to DL a Miki

@JNat It's a matter of judgement. For instance, MAL links to fansub group sites, which typically link to nyaa, which has torrent downloads, but I don't think we should go banning MAL. However, TokyoTosho also doesn't link directly to torrent files, but it's pretty clear that the primary purpose of that site is for people to find anime releases.
If the site is primarily an indexing service, then it's allowed, but if it's primary use is for people to pirate anime/manga then it probably shouldn't be.

@LoganM should we allow ppl to talk about fansub sites at least but not link to them? @MadaraUchiha @JNat

8:33 PM
@Krazer We're thinking this over too much again.

@Krazer IMO no, but I don't really know.

We aren't lawyers, and we shouldn't care unless someone does something extremely stupid, like linking directly to a fansub site or a direct stream.
I actually don't even mind if they link to a site if it complements the answer.

lets try a soft ban on links only, if there are any issues we can just reign it in. We do get a bit of traffic from fansub forums

(The reason I rollbacked was that @JNat already started in a path and we should finish what we started), but normally, I wouldn't remove the link.

@Krazer Not sure.

8:38 PM
@Krazer So discussion is fine, but no direct links?

I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts before we make a decision
sort of

we have this and this

No overarching one.

there's also this, which is related

Can we ask Arqade mods how they handle situations like this with pirated games? The situation is basically the same.

8:41 PM
@LoganM Yes

@ton.yeung licensed?
@LoganM I know how they handle it

Well, I don't think we should link directly to sites which have downloading as their main focus, as @LoganM said. Mainly because it makes the site look less profissional

@JNat emulators are ok, roms and questions about pirating or pirated games are closed (and often times deleted) on sight

Licensing laws aren't so relevant. The US respects Japanese copyrights so even if a series is unlicensed it's still technically not legal. But more importantly, it's not a question of legality, but of how we want to present ourselves.

@Krazer hmm

8:47 PM
@Krazer What if (for example, to make analogy to the situation in my meta post) there were comments linking to a pirated version of a game, but were helpful otherwise? Would those get flagged and deleted, or would mods remove the links?

@LoganM all three options are possible

@ton.yeung If we wanted it to be a perfect analogy, then yes.

it's it involves illegal/ pirated content it's deleted

@Krazer I would say that linking might be our main issue, because of the professional look thing. But if we allow discussing fansubs and the like, we need to thread carefully. What types of questions about fansubs would be allowed, then?

FWIW, we probably are going to have bigger problems enforcing a no piracy policy than any other site. Fansubbing and scanalation are ingrained in western anime culture.

8:49 PM
@LoganM Yup

@ton.yeung I used a link to a forum post of a fansub group here:
3
A: What's written in Ayatsuji Tsukasa's notebook?

Logan MThere is no mention of the exact contents of the notebook in the original VN or the anime. There are a couple of short sequel games which I have not gone through, so in principle there could be some explanation there, but given how important this is I doubt they'd want to relegate it to a side-ga...

@LoganM I don't think that's a problem. It's linked to the forum, and not to the main site. But I may be wrong

@LoganM I think forum links should be fine, but links to the content themselves should be discouraged

@JNat I agree, but it's a slippery slope if we try to base it around what the content of the site is. Any policy should be about the intent of including the link.

@LoganM I thought so, too. It really makes the site easier to navigate.

8:53 PM
@ton.yeung In that particular case, linking to the forum, I don't think the link does any harm
If it were to main site, then yes, I'd say remove it

@JNat I agree here

In that case, it's not even obvious from the link that it's at all related to fansubbing, and the content is very much relevant to the question, so I think it's allowed. However, if it were a link to a fansub group's release post saying "this is explained at 10:35 in this video; the answer is X" then it should be removed IMO.

the only problem we'll run into is when actual content is involved

@Krazer But you were suggesting that discussing fansubs/scanlations could be allowed. What types of questions could this generate, and what questions would we allow?
@ton.yeung I'm sorry, what's PITA? :S

@LoganM we don't need a meta on every new tag we make.

8:56 PM
@JNat anything that dooesn't link directly to IP/content (a screen cap of 1 or parts of a few pages is ok, but not an entire chapter)

You know :P

@JNat pain in the ass

@Krazer lol, obviously

Just make the tag with a tag wiki, and roll with it.

My bad

8:58 PM
@MadaraUchiha I want to know whether it should be a separate tag or part of

@LoganM Your post is missing some text. In the last point.
When you suggest the tag

@JNat Yeah, I'll fix it.

@Krazer Oh, that means you were not suggesting allowing questions about fansubs/scanlations, but rather questions in which material from fansubs/scanlations is present. Is that it?

@MadaraUchiha Do you think it should be separate? If so I'll just make the tag for now and we can have the discussion later if people want to merge them.

Do you have some thoughts on this whole matter, @Eric?

9:01 PM
@JNat Which? or linking to potentially illegal content distribution sites?

@Eric The latter

@LoganM I say go for it.

@JNat as sources maybe, but as a topic of discussion they should be off-topic

@LoganM I think the tag you suggest is a good way to go

burning the tag all at once is easy enough.
(if it's ever needed)
Go for it

9:02 PM
@Krazer I see. Then, I misunderstood your proposal.

Okay, going for it and deleted meta post for now.

@JNat "Which fansubbing site can give me a place to watch Naruto for free?" is off-topic

@Krazer And I get the impression @LoganM understood the same thing I did.

I'm in agreement with the school of thought that links to direct distribution sites are unprofessional and we should try to avoid them (for the sake of the site's image, not legality). This would include removing them, though there would be no penalty or anything to the user that posted them.

But an answer regarding naruto with linking Episode 666 to a fansubbing site, I don't care.

9:04 PM
@MadaraUchiha Yes, I agree
@Eric Ok, we all seem to be on the same page.

Shingeki no Kyojin readers! Chapter 48 is out
(I'm probably a little late with this :D)

@MadaraUchiha For me, if the link is to a source which is only going to be used by people who want to obtain the material for free illegally, I don't think that link is useful or necessary.

@MadaraUchiha Not that late. I think it came out on Tuesday or yesterday.

@LoganM Yes, I agree with this. I tend to remove said links.
@MadaraUchiha you don't think it's worth the hassle?

@JNat I think we shouldn't dwell in it.
We already discussed it to death.

9:08 PM
However, if the link is to a post that contains information about said episode that is not apparent by just watching the episode, and the goal of the link is quoting that text, rather than the episode itself, then IMO it's fine.

@MadaraUchiha Well, I really don't dwell on it. I remove them on sight :P

And we got a crushing answer from a Stack Exchange employee, to not dwell in it, and just leave it alone unless it's malice.

@MadaraUchiha That was w.r.t legality, though, not professionalism.

So I find it hard to understand why every time someone links to a site we are having this discussion again :|

Their answer was roughly that we can set our own policy with regard to this, but that there's no legal considerations to be had.

9:17 PM
Listen to me.
Questions about fansubbing are off-topic.
Answers containing them, are not.
Simple as that.
Obviously, if the question is obviously malicious or trollish in a way of providing direct download links or whatever, we act as needed.
But normal answers with links aren't something we care.
@ton.yeung faq.
And if it doesn't appear there, it will.
Blegh

The information should all be there.
And if something isn't clear, us moderators have the ability to edit the on-topic page to make it clearer.

@ton.yeung Yeah, that's the rule. The question we were talking about is an ID request that has nothing to do with gameplay.

Yeah, questions about characters seem relevant to us

@ton.yeung Good luck! ;P

9:24 PM
@ton.yeung Already are some
I suggest animeanswers.com, which gets around 4 questions a year. You could take it over by yourself.

9:45 PM
@ton.yeung There's a reason we're doing fairly well. It's not because SE is a great platform for anime Q&A, but because literally every other option out there is horrible.
@ton.yeung this or this or this or this or this or this or your favorite anime-related forum.

10:28 PM
wow
do we need all these tags?

Q: What is the chronological order of the Monogatari Series

Memor-Xi got Bakemonogatari, Nisemonogatari and learned that Monogatari Series Second Season is begin streamed by Aniplex which means Nekomonogatari would have been streamed at some point and they would get a home release so i am wondering what is the story chronological order i should watch Bakemonoga...

Don't they all fit under ?

@JNat Yes.
I can't think of any reason why we'd need all those tags.

Yeah, let's make a tag and the other ones should all be synonyms.

@LoganM Why "-series"? Do we do that for any other tags?

@LoganM I'll create the synonyms now
@Eric No, but I think that's the actual name of the franchise
right, @LoganM?

@Eric means story. Too generic. The closest thing the series has to an official overarching name is Monogatari Series.

10:36 PM
Now that you mention it, I think you're right, @JNat.
@LoganM Yeah, my bad.

Ok, it is done
Hmm, I may have done it wrong
The ones tagged did not get retagged
I should've merged upon creation of synonym, right?
Or do they just take some time?

@JNat For some reason it doesn't do that. You have to merge the tag also.
IIRC

Ok, now it's done
The other two existing questions were yours @LoganM
Do you get some notification?

Nope. Nothing yet.

10:49 PM
Well, I'm off. Cya

@JNat :(

@Eric Don't fret
I'll be back

@JNat :D
See ya later~
I found this to be rather amusing:

oh wow lol
I tried my hand at a canonical reference post for questions asking for databases or lists of anime/manga. Opinions? Is it useful/good enough to be canonical?

Q: What databases and listing sites exist for anime, manga, etc?

Logan MNote: This is intended to be the canonical reference for questions like this to avoid lots of new questions coming in with slightly different specifications. Please check the sites here to see if any fit what you want before asking a new question. The answer is CW, so feel free to add to it. Wha...

@LoganM I would move the Note in the question to the bottom (of the question). I think it's better for visibility if the question itself gets the top, for purposes of the summary (such as the chat link).
Otherwise, seems good.

11:04 PM
Okay I moved it.

Perfect.

The answer should definitely be CW. As for the question, I'm up in the air.
I'll leave it up to the mods.
@krikara The discussion regarding your answer begins here and continues for a while.

Q: Should sites like Bakaupdates be banned?

krikaraI posted links to Baka-updates and mangaupdates earlier and the links were removed with the reason being it was a link to an illegal fan sub / scanlations site. However Bakaupdates is neither a fan sub group or a scans group. They are simply just an updates website. There is actually nothing ille...

@HellButterfly Thanks lol

Q: What databases and listing sites exist for anime, manga, etc?

Logan MWhat are the major online databases of anime, manga, light novels, visual novels, and other related media? What are the differences between them? To qualify as an answer, the source should list a large fraction of series in some particular medium, not just one or a few related series. The primar...

yay

Meh, my site works with arbitrary amounts of /a/a/a/a/a/ !

@Danalog you would embed a secret unicorn panel in there

@Krazer Nah, it's all movie quotes, all the way down

aww~ :p

This is the most genius idea ever:

A: Don't close questions where the user has requested that it not be closed

mootinatorI would suggest that rather than closing these questions, we set up a migration path to Yahoo Answers. To prevent it from being abused, it would only be available when the system finds: "please" in proximity to the phrase "don't close" or "do not close"

We can just migrate all the crap to Yahoo! Answers.
(Assuming we don't put in the suggested prevention measures.)
