Q: What does the word "seether" means?

Edward RuchevitsI am trying to translate Veruca's Salt song "Seether" and I can't find this word's translation, or, at least, meaning. Ow! Seether is neither loose nor tight, Seether is neither black nor white. I tried to keep her on a short leash, I tried to calm her down. I tried to ram her into ...

OT.

damnit I'm out of votes
I did like that song though

What good are ya?
@Luke Wow, MSO punted that to ELU meta?

I normally put bug reports on MSO because that's where the devs normally are.

@Robusto can we punt it back?

Seems like we should be able to. It can't be strictly an ELU issue.

6:15 PM
I agree. I'm not getting any rep on ELU Meta.

It would require mod intervention, I think.

It happens on SO, too.
But only with Safari, not with Opera.

"Safari"? "Opera"? WTF are those?

Well, let's wake up a mod and see how far they can punt.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I feel flaggy today.

6:19 PM
Hmm, I had to read that twice!

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 One is an African journey, the other is a long, boring session involving music and singing.

@tchrist flaggy?

Don’t make me show you.

Characterizations of browsers:
Chrome: Olympic athlete
Safari: Fashion show attendee
Firefox: Developer who is into LARP
Opera: Elitist without a cause
Internet Explorer: Short-bus passenger
2

Pah.

6:24 PM
What kind of a browser is Pah? Is that some Dutch-only thing?

Chrome: spy from a Great Power

Who says Olympic athletes can't be spies? Where do you think the Chinese get their contenders?

He doesn’t like being reminded that he rides the short bus.
Aug 11 at 15:35, by Robusto
@JasperLoy Are you saying I have to dumb it down just for you?
Aug 11 at 15:36, by tchrist
@Robusto Everybody rides the short bus now and then.
Devil take us.

Aug 11 at 15:38, by Robusto
My bus is also not handicapped-accessible. It is not an omnibus.

Can the Ayatolla ride your bus?

6:28 PM
Don't make me tap the sign again.
And I consider religion a handicap, so ...

Not a hominibus, then?

You can't pack enough hos into a minibus.

Oh, homey!

Santa Claus can only pack three onto his sleigh: Ho ho ho.

6:30 PM
That's what the dingdong says.

Somehow this reminds me of Chrome more.

@Cerberus Let's not say things we can't take back, you IE-wielding mutt.

Silly crowds cheering on inflexibility, while being infiltrated by an agent from a foreign power.
Hey, I never use IE.

Chrome is not inflexible.

...

6:31 PM
@Robusto now now, his version of Windows is too old to run IE.

Have you looked at Firefox?

@Cerberus Every goddamn day.

It has moar add-ons.

> chrome: n. [from automotive slang via wargaming] Showy features added to attract users but contributing little or nothing to the power of a system. “The 3D icons in Motif are just chrome, but they certainly are pretty chrome!” Distinguished from bells and whistles by the fact that the latter are usually added to gratify developers' own desires for featurefulness. Often used as a term of contempt.

See?

6:33 PM
@Cerberus I only use add-ons that help me in my work.

If Safari hadn't already occupied the spot...
@Robusto ...and Chrome doesn't have all the good ones FF has. And the general customizability.

@tchrist It's also an element, a catch-all term for a UI, and a browser.
@Cerberus Jesus, I should have guessed you were starting a religious war when you posted that picture of the Popemobile.

Just a bash in the flan.

sorry, it was my fault, when I joked about tchrist's safari and opera.

@Robusto Of course it is a religious war!! What are browser fans but acolytes?

6:35 PM
so Cerb, did you get your phone working?

homini homini homini
grits

I'm a browser agnostic. Except I hate IE.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes! But I sadly had to wipe it.

Even agnostics hate Hell.

@Robusto So you ehm open internet pages in Windows Explorer (that is possible btw.)?
If you refuse to recognise browsers as such...

6:36 PM
@Cerberus No. I use whatever is handy, except IE.

OK.
Apart from extensions, I like Opera and Chrome too.

@Cerberus I've always found Opera to be ugly and unweildy

I've cut down on extensions. There are few I find I really need.

@tchrist Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company.

I like Chrome because the dev tools are as good as Firebug without requiring an add-on.

6:38 PM
Opera is the only superfast and super–easy-to-use (read: keyboard-friendly) browser. The rest suck.

For you, maybe. I have nothing against using a mouse.

@tchrist If you want keyboard-friendly with Chrome, consider the Vimium add-on.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Really? I don't really care about looks, but it is always very fast for me.
@Robusto There are few I don't really need!

My hands stay on my home row. Don't make me switch modes.
@ΜετάEd Can I edit text widgets in vi mode?

@Robusto OMG what kind of a computer snob are you? No mouse hatred? I am disappoint.

6:40 PM
@tchrist Opera has rude CSS idiosyncracies.

Back to the topic.

Q: English SE vandalized by Martians

LukeHere is a screenshot of English SE newest questions tab. Look at the red gibberish (likely Martian handwriting). Here is the text: tdber 18 Tvrptvinp-oldpanigno"viTclzinsti tdber 18 Tvrptvinp- oldpanigno"viAddzinsti butt /bvalui Addzon-td I refreshed the page and the re...

Where does this belong? ELU Meta, or MSO?

@Robusto Haven’t noticed.

Topics are fluid.

@Luke You’ll have to prove it is cross-site, apparently.

@Luke ELU Meta. It's not about the other sites.

6:40 PM
I can confirm it is, but cannot at the moment prove it.
I swear I already posted about this.
I did a Safari screen shot full of the same crap you are showing.

@tchrist Opera has every bit of the "my way is the standard" attitude you see in IE, except without anything like the market share.

I think the "Martians" took my question.

@tchrist Well ... it works a lot like vi. i/Esc take you in and out of insert mode.

@JohnJunior About Einstein? It got deleted.

@Robusto I’m a programmer, not a HTML scribe.

6:42 PM
Problem is, we don't know how to reproduce it.

@simchona Yes :(

@tchrist But it's not what you think: it's not the vi editor for a text widget; it's vi-like keystrokes for navigating the web.

@tchrist Then why don't you write your own text-only browser in Perl?

@ΜετάEd That would be fine. Once addicted to Rogue, you will never change.
@Robusto Why do you confuse text-only with keyboard, eh?

@simchona Why delete it and not just close it and give me a chance to work on it?

6:44 PM
@JohnJunior It was closed.

@tchrist Why do you make assumptions about what I think?

@tchrist Yeah, that's the idea.

@simchona But now it's gone.

@Robusto If you want a text-only browser:
Lynx is a very configurable text-based web browser for use on cursor-addressable character cell terminals. It is the oldest web browser currently in use. History Lynx was a product of the Distributed Computing Group within Academic Computing Services of the University of Kansas, and was initially developed in 1992 by a team of students at the university (Lou Montulli, Michael Grobe and Charles Rezac) as a hypertext browser used solely to distribute campus information as part of a Campus-Wide Information Server and for browsing the Gopher space. Beta availability was announced to Usenet o...

@Robusto I don’t. You gave yourself away.
2 mins ago, by Robusto
@tchrist Then why don't you write your own text-only browser in Perl?

6:45 PM
@tchrist Seriously, are we going to go down this road again?

I’m bitching about not being able to use a keyboard.
This has nothing to do with being text-only.

@JohnJunior You asked "Could anybody please tell me what the combination of their meanings is and how they relate to each other?", which is both off topic and too localized. If you can say a bit about how you would improve it, I'll undelete. But I won't necessarily reopen until it's fixed.

Which only you mentioned.

43 secs ago, by Robusto
@tchrist Seriously, are we going to go down this road again?

You said text-only.
I didn’t.

6:46 PM
Those words are taboo?

I was complaining about lack of keyboard navigation. You suggested text-only, as though that were an answer. It isn’t. It’s changing the subject altogether.

@tchrist Nah, you got insulting. "I’m a programmer, not a HTML scribe." Or did you forget that part?

@Robusto @tchrist Guys, calm down please.

@Robusto You don’t like Dr McCoy?
Where is the insult?
Honestly!
Classic Trek, nothing more.
Silly.

@simchona How could it be "off topic"?

6:49 PM
You are being coy, not McCoy.

Amn’t.

@JohnJunior You're asking for an interpretation of something. Localized because you're asking about something that people won't really ever look for.

hums the Final Jeopardy music do do do do, do do doo, do do do do Do! do-do-do-do-do, do do do do, do do doo, Do, do-do, do do, do, do (bong bong)

Whoa! Sounds amazing!

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I was wondering whether the Jeopardy language had do support.

6:50 PM
Do you know what sheet music is for?

@Robusto oh, it do

@Luke Yes, and once you are no longer a minor, we’ll tell you, too.

Hey, I have a serious question about IE.

What an oxymoron!

Sirius is the Dog Star.

6:51 PM
@Cerberus giggles

sirius is a radio channel

Why do I read several news items a day about this recent vulnerability in major newspapers, even though new vulnerabilities pop up almost weekly, with all the warnings and the patches and shit?
@Luke Haha I guess!

@Cerberus Because these latest are zero-day vulnerabilities that Microsoft can't solve, apparently.

Is that all?

@simchona OK let me think about it. May I get back to you on this?

6:52 PM
@Cerberus Isn't that enough?

They have announced a patch already for this one.
> Microsoft: ‘Fix-it’-tool voor lek online – morgen definitieve oplossing
"Microsoft: 'Fix-it' tool for leak online - tomorrow definitive solution"

> Microsoft has recommended a workaround while they develop a patch, but it is not comprehensive and is difficult to set up. If you are among the folks that still use IE, why not take this opportunity to move to Firefox or Chrome? They are better, faster, smarter, safer, and what all the cool kids use to browse the internet these days

Why did they write it in Dutch?

@Robusto But I read stuff like this about IE every week?
@Luke Well...how do I explain this...
People in other countries speak different languages?

6:55 PM
Microsoft is American

week

@Robusto Is it really that much worse than the usual vulnerabilities and warnings?

> While Microsoft’s current suggestions may help prevent the exploit, they may not be practical for all users. EMET is an advanced tool that can take time to properly deploy and can be complicated. The changes to the Internet Explorer security settings may also interfere with functionality on the web and could be inconvenient. It is also important to note that the suggested solutions have not yet been confirmed to be entirely effective.

Americans speak English

@Cerberus Not if you don't care about evil people taking over your computer.

6:56 PM
@Luke I quoted a Dutch article I happened to be reading.

@john sure.
@luke that's rather narrow minded.

@Robusto But they are always whining about such people.
Oh, well.
I always tell people to switch to FF or Chrome.

Microsoft is a multinational organization.

Most Americans speak English

@simchona Oh, please.

6:57 PM
@Cerberus Never realized you were Dutch

@Luke Aspice monstrum!

@Luke People can read articles in other languages than their nationality’s, you know.

That, too.

@Cerberus IE doesn't have new zero-day vulnerabilities every day. You are probably over-remembering the number of remote exploits you have read about.

I occasionally read stuff in English.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Not every day, but lots!

6:59 PM
@cerb no way. Not allowed.

I'm trying to cut it down.

@Cerberus Nah, not all that often. IE is a lot more secure now than it used to be.

But you people aren't exactly helping.

How are you feeling now @Cerb? Still fine?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

7:00 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Let's say it was once a year. Why the multiple headline, over several days, in a serious newspaper?
@MattЭллен Uh yep!
The alcohol is now gone from my system, I believe.

Squirrels have four minute attention spans.

@Cerberus Don't your newspapers have multliple articles about the same topic, over and over, for days on end?

Sometimes I feel like us in chat are squirrels.

@tchrist Come on, it's true. They have clearly improved it.

@Luke me am.

7:01 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes, but this is the first time I can remember they have it about IE vulnerabilities, which are reported all year round.

What are you talking about?

But now I need to make a phone call.

@Cerberus can you give us urine test results in ppm?

Uh, no.

Look at that tree!

7:02 PM
you're no scientist!

hugs tree
@MattЭллен I'm not fraudulent, that is true.
Later!

Speaking of which, I've gotta go to.

7:03 PM

You pinged me just for that?

@Luke That's four, not tree.

@Luke It helps keep organized.

7:04 PM
Well, I was hoping for a chain pun, but nobody wanted to play.

I'm trying to leave!

That’s what the squirrel said.

@Luke So go then.

Then he forgot.

@Luke Nobody's barring the door

7:04 PM
Fior, to be exact.

When I come back it'll say 20 new messages!

@Luke 21.

@Luke Sounds like a challenge

That's so annoying when people are just saying bye and you're coming back.

@Luke Hey Luke.

7:05 PM
Goodbye!
slams door

@Luke Well...

@Luke Bye.

@Luke Would you rather we ignore you?

@Luke Bye.

7:05 PM
@Luke straightens photo frames near door

Hi @Mr.ShinyandNew安宇

@DavidWallace well well well, we meet again

It's been a very long time.

Is he gone?

7:10 PM
@Luke, @Luke's gone.

I miss him already :(

@Luke will return.

I don't think so.
Nobody likes to be ignored let alone being threatened by it.
8 mins ago, by simchona
@Luke Would you rather we ignore you?
In my opinion.

@JohnJunior Seriously? You're reading way too much into that.

> Through the security advisory Microsoft has urged people running Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8 & 9 to install the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) and set the internet and local intranet security settings in Internet Explorer to ‘High’ in order to block ActiveX Controls and Active Scripting in these zones.
Hahahahahaha. (Emphasis mine.)
What a name for the "We Hope This Will Save Our Ass" toolkit.
WTF is an Enhanced Mitigation Experience?

7:16 PM
@simchona Possibly, but we will see if he comes back or not...

@Robusto It's like a regular Mitigation Experience, only "Enhanced (tm)"

Why didn't I think of that? headdesk

@JohnJunior I really, really think you're reading too much into it.

@Robusto you fail at marketing.

@simchona BTW his gravatar is now gone.

7:18 PM
And notice that mitigation isn't actually a solution. It's a palliative, nothing more.

The real trick to marketing is that you have to Enhance every Experience.

@JohnJunior So?
That doesn't mean he's not coming back. It means he signed out, basically.

We will see if he comes back or not...

Oh jeez.

@JohnJunior You know y'all are never going to get back the time you are spending arguing about this.

7:21 PM
@tchrist I don’t trust things I hear about by word of mouth. I'll have to see him(@Luke) talking again to believe.

Gotta run. Ta.

@Robusto Bye Rob.

@ΜετάEd We're not arguing, we're talking about the fact that nobody likes to be ignored let alone being threatened by it.

@JohnJunior I never threatened anyone.

@Luke Would you rather we ignore you?

7:24 PM
This is where you're reading too much into it.

You're completing conflating two situations.
Luke was leaving, and wanted people to stop pinging him.

OK :)
@ЯegDwight hi

Why do you remove so often your comments @John?

@Carlo_R. I'm a bit of a perfectionist :)

@ЯegDwight today Firefox is at 100!

@JohnJunior Only a bit? That's no perfection!

7:33 PM
But, it is difficult to follow the discussion this way, especially by a not native of English @John.

@Carlo_R. following a deleted discussion is extremely easy, actually.
You don't even have to do anything and bam! — you've followed it!

@Carlo_R. The best way to follow a discussion is to participate in the discussion.

@JohnJunior not in this chat.
While you are busy replying to one person, you miss what OVER 9000 others say.
So you end up with an assortment of weirdly intertwined dialogues.

@ЯegDwight Multi-task?

@John Where are you come from? I do not ever seen you before!

7:36 PM
@JohnJunior I will ping you the next time the chat is on fire. See if you can keep up simply reading what others say.

@John however I believe I agree with Reg when he says nothing.

I leave for half an hour and I'm pinged 20 times!

@Carlo_R. I just didn't say "No you don't". Now what?

@Luke @JohnJunior And with that, I told you so.

@Luke who, @Luke? You, @Luke? Or a different @Luke? @Luke?

7:40 PM
@Luke, @JohnJunior thought I threatened you and you weren't coming back.

@ЯegDwight That only pinged me once.

@Luke I know. Is that a challenge?
